The short answer has got to be streaming. It explains all the catalog greatest hits placements too. Your point about algorithms is important regarding streaming. A lot of people aren't choosing what they are hearing when they stream. So, Taylor Swift becomes sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The algorithm puts it in front of people and then the algorithm notes that they listened to it and puts it in front of them again as well as in front of other people. I think the alternative bands have a shot if they can get a single song to connect with enough folks. What I find interesting about the chart is that 2000-2010 is barely represented. A lot of music released during that time (the downloading era) has fallen into a historical black hole.

You really captured many of the same thoughts that I had about the film. I thought it was very good, though it didn't climb the heights of some of his other films. I'd probably (on one viewing) place it about #6 out of 8 if I were to rank it against his others.
I thought the dialogue, while not as quippable as films past, was very good at establishing the characters and their motivations.
It was great to see Walton Goggins get such a meaty role and do something with it. Jennifer Jason Leigh knocked it out of the park. I quite enjoyed Tim Roth's performance, especially when it was revealed that he was a gangster, not a class act.

I think Red and Starless contain a little too much noodling in places. If they had condensed the best tracks of each on to one record, it would have been their best album.
I'm with you on that idea. I think Red needed one or two more actual songs in the place of the "Providence" live improv and then you'd have a near perfect album. Their improv game at this time was strong, but "Providence" is not a good representation. On "Starless and Bible Black," some of the improvs are better than the actual songs which seem somewhat undercooked to me.

I was a King Crimson obsessive back in the 90s and saw them 6 or 7 times. I've cooled on them considerably (funnily, after accidentally meeting Robert Fripp in Detroit Metropolitan Airport).
I came into fandom by way of In the Court of the Crimson King but, ultimately, most appreciated the 80s line-up and albums (Discipline/Beat/Three of a Perfect Pair).
I don't think they have a perfect album, but Discipline comes closest, with In the Court of the Crimson King, Larks' Tongues in Aspic, and Red coming in close behind.
I would advise a novice to pick up any of those 4, but be aware that they are remarkably different from each other.

Nobody was immune to that production style in the late 80s.
For proof, listen to anything from Roger Waters's 1987 album, Radio KAOS.
Rather than re-recording BW88, and essentially covering himself yet again, how about a tour in 2018 to mark the 30th Anniversary where he and his band perform the album?
Tom Waits was immune to the 80's production style (ex. swordfishtrombones and rain dogs) You're right, I shouldn't have said everybody went all in on 1980s production. AC/DC sure didn't. Depending on the band/artist, some are better at adapting to the 80s sound, and it doesn't sound so synthetic. ie. Van Halen incorporated synths, but really just used them as an extension of their sound. AC/DC most definitely went 80s on Fly on the Wall and the new stuff on Who Made Who. Not many synths, obviously, but they've got the gated drums, vocals sounding like they were recorded in a cavern, and that big echoey, tinny sound. Those records would have sounded better with different production choices, but Brian Wilson '88? That's perfect. I wouldn't change a thing.

It's on his thread, but basically that the original was supposed to be quiet and intimate and the remix is a grand pronouncement with double-tracked vocals ruining the effect.
Which is why it's kinda stupid that this new version is on two higher profile Beach Boys releases, yet to get the original single version of "Lady" you gotta buy either the Super Furry Animals Under the Influence compilation or the Kitsuné Tabloid compilation by Phoenix. And while at least it's available, I don't think one should have to look further for the original version released during the artist's lifetime. I'd never heard of the Kitsune Tabloid release until this post, so many thanks! Is this a needle drop also? I'm pretty sure it might be the same one as the SFA comp. It's on iTunes, at least here in America. I'd assume it's probably around the rest of the world too. On Amazon downloads too Just bought it from Amazon. Thanks SmilinEd!

In case anyone is looking for more confirmation that the mixes are correct, I A/B'd "Melt Away" and "Love and Mercy" and they are the correct, 1988 mixes on the new remaster. Wirestone already reported it and I purchased it on his recommendation, but I know that I always appreciate as much verification as I can get before I buy something for the third time. But, I really can't tell a difference between the "Let It Shine"s. I'm not sure what I am listening for as regards differences.

Just posted my version of "Better Off Dead" from the fabulous Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy album. Hope you dig it. In particular I had fun double-tracking the drums to try and get an echo effect comparable to the original recording. Let me know what you think.
Great job! (Captain Fantastic is my favorite Elton record and Better Off Dead my favorite cut.) I have shared that 1979 performance with MANY people when they suggest Elton can be summed up with a Greatest Hits record.
