The hell? Is Mike trying to claim pet sounds as his own now....     What a twisted guy to try to steal acclaim from BW's masterpiece to screw him.

I mean why else would Mike show up on stage with Tony Asher than to claim pet sounds as a Mike love BBs project since he thinks he is Brian's equal. Such a sick egomaniac. Roll Eyes

Troll.

Yeah, for a split second at the concert I was confused... no Surf's Up in Surf's Up? :S

I found a video of Busy Doing Nothing / Surf's Up. They had a balcony seat, so you can see everyone in the band Smiley. I do like how he tells you to listen to the lyrics of SU...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoubC1n3WZA
In this recording you can close your eyes and almost imagine Matt is Brian. Watching this video gives me the chills. What a voice.

Well, he does introduce Surf's Up, and he doesn't hum through the whole verse. Just that one lyric.

Brian sounds really good with Matt on "While at port adieu or die."

They soundcheckesd I'm Broke.

Yes. Just YES

There was also a moment where he made sure his piano just as loud as Scott and Darians

Wow. That's insane. Of all the officially released songs Brian has, he chooses that to play.

I want to hear Brian and Al tackle "Crack At Your Love."
79  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's falsetto in the 70's. on: July 09, 2015, 11:15:26 AM
Or there is the youtube clip where's he asked about his voice, and instantly jumps into his falsetto to prove he still has it.

I've never seen this one before. Does anyone have a link?
Here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-u5UqsHsMo
Look at 2:03

Brian's answer about Marie Callender's.  LOL

There are seriously complaints about this setlist? Brian played 33 songs last night, and by my count, only 16 of them can be categorized as meat and potatoes. And I don't know about most posters on here, but I'd be disappointed if I went to a Beach Boys-related show and didn't hear some of these asterisked songs:

Our Prayer
Heroes and Villains
California Girls *
Shut Down *
Little Deuce Coupe *
I Get Around *
This Whole World
Girl Don't Tell Me
Honeycomb
Then He Kissed Me
California Saga: California
In My Room *
Surfer Girl *
Don't Worry Baby *
One Kind of Love
Sail Away
Wild Honey
Sail On, Sailor
Darlin' *
Wake the World
Busy Doin' Nothin'
Surf's Up
The Right Time
Wouldn't It Be Nice *
Sloop John B *
God Only Knows *
Good Vibrations *
Encore:
All Summer Long
Help Me, Rhonda *
Barbara Ann *
Surfin' U.S.A. *
Fun, Fun, Fun *
Love and Mercy

I can't really blame any of the members for not signing autographs before or after the shows. Isn't that what the VIP tickets are for?
82  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Questions you'd like to see addressed in Mike's book on: July 05, 2015, 05:34:08 PM
Al Jardine has been sporting a nice hairpiece for a couple of years now...

Ya and Mike has too.  His hairpiece is called 'the baseball hat'.  I'd like to ask Mike to cover this in his book... Like why he thinks no one would have noticed that he's been increasingly follicle free for about 50 years.

If it's just a 'look'...it doesn't and almost never has worked.  That various headware?  Pretty much goofy.  And what's with Bruce sporting the same 'wig'?  Does this create a demand for 'wig' sales at the gigs?

Will they consider renaming the group The Bald Boys if they ever again 'unite'?  Answers to be pondered.

A suggestion too...to rename the book.  Call it...  'I Shaved My Back For This?' [and so did Bruce]

It's bizarre how much people care about Mike's lack of hair and decision to wear a hat.

The point actually is...I DON'T care one iota about his lack of hair.  I doubt that very many people do.  THEREFORE the decision to wear headwear almost w/o exception for 50 years seems needless, pointless and foolish.  He ain't kiddin' a soul.  What it does do is it suggests that Mike has something to hide...and he's not above hiding it.  [whatever that may be]

Or maybe Mike prefers the way he looks with a hat on.

Not sure he's totally against it these days...

 LOL

In all seriousness though, if he has back problems, perhaps a little medical marijuana helps him feel better. Helps with anxiety, too... I'm definitely not saying that from personal experience  Wink
Off-topic question: is that cart for handicapped people (would Brian would use it because it's hard for him to walk)?  He looks like he's goofing off too, so there's that.  Smiley

It's a luggage cart.

Apropo of nothing, here's a text from my friend who'd just seen the show here in Phila, Monday night:

Blondie Chaplin should stay home though. What a jackass. He's noisy, out of sync with the group and the vibe, and acts all goofy with body language like the whole thing is a joke. About 10 times he mentioned he used to be in the Rolling Stones band. He should go back to the stones. I'd have preferred john stamos.

 LOL

I can see your friend's point about Blondie -- if I'm looking through the perspective of someone who hates fun and would prefer no one dares move, except to play an instrument. Is he also bothered when Scott circles the stage during Help Me, Rhonda? Or when Nelson runs around with his cowbell? If so, maybe he should close his eyes at concerts. Otherwise, such antics might offend.

I went to the Boston show tonight, and Blondie was an absolute highlight. He was having fun, and it's obvious from his vocals and guitar solos that he's certainly not taking this as a joke.

Something that stood out about his performance is that I saw him interact with nearly every band member on stage. When Darian sang Darlin', Blondie came over with a tambourine and tapped Darian on the back with it mid-song. Darian looked over and laughed/smiled.

During Help Me, Rhonda, Scott came out to share a mic with Blondie, and Blondie kind of took a step back like he didn't want to sing with him. He quickly stepped back up and Scott doubled over laughing. He also looked back to mimic Nelson a couple times while he had his tambourine, and the two shared some laughs.

It's fun to see Blondie walk all over the stage while he's up there, either while soloing or while playing the tambourine. His vocals on Wild Honey, Sail On, Sailor and Sail Away were superb. Brian and Paul mentioned Blondie was in the Rolling Stones. I couldn't imagine Blondie saying it.

It's a bit strange that Blondie comes and goes, but it kind of makes sense. Beach Boys songs aren't easy to play on guitar, and the vocal blend already sounds so good.

I think this is the best touring entity of Brian Wilson's band yet. The additions of Al, Blondie and Matt really pull everything together. It also gives Brian some rest from having to sing every song while adding some Beach Boys "legitimacy" to lead vocals. (I would have liked to see Scott take a lead vocal, since Darian got two, but I'm sure he appreciates hearing Brian sing "One Kind Of Love" every night.)

Matt sounded great on all the falsettos, and his new bandmates seemed to admire his rendition of "Don't Worry Baby." DWB is my favorite Beach Boys song, and it never felt quite right with Jeff singing it, though I'm not sure why. I like Jeff and Jeff's falsetto. It just suits Matt better.

Al still sounds fantastic and appeared very happy to be there. I was happy to see him sing so many leads -- basically 9 total. They're definitely not wasting him.

Brian was a bit hoarse at times, and both Scott and Paul made sure he had water a couple times during the show. He sounded best on "God Only Knows," and the raspiness actually kind of worked on faster songs like Fun, Fun, Fun and Surfin USA. He was very animated between songs and appeared comfortable. He introduced almost every single song.

I noticed Blondie, not Brian, sang the "Oh, let me take you there to another land. Don't expect the world to understand." Sail Away bridge.

Overall, it was a fantastic show that covered the highlights of Brian's whole career. Surf's Up was fantastic.

Mr. Parks may not be stating his claims in his usually eloquent way, but that is not what I want to address.

With respect to his contention regarding Love & Mercy, does he not have a point? To address the cello part on Good Vibrations, my understanding is that Carl suggested the use of a cello, and by his word Mr. Parks came up with the idea that they play 8th note triplets. The cello triplets are certainly not the sole focal point of Good Vibrations, but they are a very interesting part of the outro- so much so that they form an entire scene in the Love & Mercy movie, but with Brian seeming to come up with the part. If we are to take Mr. Parks at his word regarding this topic, and so far no one has shown otherwise, then I would say he has a legitimate issue. If so, who would his issue be with? Certainly the writers and producers would be relying on the words and thoughts of others, and in this case you would have to believe that Brian ok'd the scene as being correct...

I don't think the scene suggested the cello was Brian's idea. It just showed his obsessive streak with getting a segment perfectly despite the lengths it took to do so.

Any scene depicting Van Dyke or Carl coming up with the idea would have seemed extraneous, forced and unneeded. This was not "Orange Crate Art - The Van Dyke Parks Biopic." The movie already was long enough. Even if a scene depicting Van Dyke being credited ever existed, it likely would have been edited out.
89  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Question about That same song.. on: June 12, 2015, 01:54:21 PM
Yeah all the orig songs were old, back home from 62/3.

The Beach Boys didn't release an album of new material between Jan. 1973 and 15 Big Ones in July 1976. Songs written in 1974 and 1975 are not old songs. Those are new songs.

Do you only consider a song "new" if it's written in the studio during an album session or something?

i think it can be attributed to people like Lindsey Buckingham and Russ Titelman. It's usually used when referring to Kevin S. Leslie, Brian's main handler who was a 20something young dude w/ a surfer bod and a blond ponytail.

There's a video of Mike Love on A Current Affair where he refers to them as the Psycho Roadies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k56ecdZ1-As

Anyone know what the clip at 1:24 in that YouTube video is from? https://youtu.be/k56ecdZ1-As?t=1m24s

It's one of the rare instances that shows Al Jardine and David Marks in the group at the same time.

Awesome to see the band playing this setlist. Ike sounds great on YSBIM.

Nice to hear Scott getting more falsetto leads. His falsetto sounds like a mix between Bruce and Brian. Definitely a Beach Boys tone.

Also love that they picked up the tempo on Shut Down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4i9EpQY748

I dont see how or why anyone would think theres anything good about the light album or ktsa...think about it : the beach boys were a rockin band , the light album other than shortenin bread is essentially muzak, brian was hardly involved and it was a collection of outtakes...ktsa just awful...I love the beach boys, ive been a zealot/pundit my whole life but their post.holland output minus love you is grim and soulless.

Pet Sounds, Smiley Smile, Friends, Surf's Up and Sunflower are rockin'?

Also, is Darlin' a bad song just because it's an "outtake"/rewrite?
98  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Still Cruisin' and Summer In Paradise rerelease? on: May 11, 2015, 07:42:09 AM
I legitimately like Somewhere Near Japan, Make It Big, Still Surfin' and Lahaina Aloha. And I wouldn't say Slow Summer Dancin', Strange Things Happen, Summer In Paradise, Forever, Still Crusin', Island Girl, In My Car or Kokomo are terrible.

Wipe Out is a guilty pleasure of mine too.
99  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who do you want to see Brian cover on his R&R album? on: May 03, 2015, 10:17:30 AM
DO I LOVE YOU by the Ronettes

in the fall of 2007 I was given the opportunity by Alan Boyd to direct a video shoot at a Bel Air cocktail mixer and mini concert for Brian and guests celebrating the upcoming Kennedy Center Awards.  Lots of A list folks there; David Anderle, Van Dyke Parks, Henry Rollins ( a HUGE Beach Boys / Brian Wilson fan - he loved the mid / late 70s albums like Love You and MIU), etc.  After the show, I was at the bar getting a water, when Brian walked up for the same thing.  He had been rounding up his kids to leave.

I thanked him for a wonderful show (which included a live performance of Midnight's Another Day) and asked him if I remembered "Do I Love You."

He said, "Yeah."

I said, "I'd love to hear you cover that some day."

His eyes narrowed.  He nodded, and said, "Well, you never know."

That's one of the greatest songs of all time. Don't know why it wasn't a bigger hit.

Also, if Brian wants to do a rock & roll covers album, then I'd be happy to own it. I can't see the perspective of "I'd rather get another album of originals," because I view them as completely different entities. Cover albums are fun for the artist and pretty easy and quick to crank out.

We know how long it takes Brian to write songs at this point, so complaining about receiving some additional material in between seems odd.

100  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Hodgepodge on: May 03, 2015, 10:10:16 AM
The BIG difference was by 20/20 the whole band was writing/producing material. In '66 they had no choice but to wait for Brian to deliver the goods no matter how long/many takes it took.

Moreover, Brian was still perceived by the others as artistically infallible in 1966. That had changed, forever, by the time of OMR and 20/20.

I like 20/20 well enough, but in no way is it on the same level as SUNFLOWER or SURF'S UP. 20/20, while generally good, has no context as an album. Kind of like the 1965 Presley LP ELVIS FOR EVERYONE - just a collection of cuts.
every album after holland was just a collection of cuts- 15 big ones being old outtakes and covers, MIU outtakes and rewrites, Light album and KTSA old cuts, outtakes and aborted solo cuts..that's wht holland was the bookend of their progressive era. The cohesiveness of album making within the group went to primary focus on touring cuz thats what brought in the $.

20/20 is definitely a collection, same with Light album and Keepin the summer alive, only dif is that 20/20 is a great comp.

When ya really break it down Holland really was the last legitimate BBs album til the self-titled over a decade later; 15 big ones being covers and outtakes from prior yrs, Love You being Brian's solo, MIU being older outtakes and rewrites, and same w LA and KTSA with once again older outtakes and solo tracks from aborted solo sessions (dennis, carl & mike).

(I apologize for this being typed in paragraph format, I dont have a functioning computer so I use the phone). Ive tried explaining it before but its gotten misconstrued so I went thru the albums, did the research on several perspectives and this is what I compiled: #1 / 15 big ones- after acknowledging the covers outta the originals, Its ok from the 74 caribou sessions, had to phone ya remade from what brian made for spring in 72, everyones in love with you a mike love solo cut, susie cincinnati from the sunflower sessions, that same song and back home brian wrote in 63,4...#2 love you- brian wilson solo album w the BB name tacked on contractually. #3 m.I.u. album: tomboy and my diane outtakes from 76 adult.child, kona coast, bells of paris etc from the aborted xmas album, peggy sue and come go w me from the 15big ones sessions, and the remainder quickly thrown together wilson\love cuts...#4 light album- good timin from 74 caribou sessions, love surrounds me and baby blue outtakes from dennis' nixed second lp, sumahama a solo mike love cut, here comes the night from wild honey transformed into a horrid disco number, full sail-angel come home-goin south early carl solo cuts...#5 keepin the summer alive- the title track and heartache more early carl solo, when girls get together from the sunflower sessions, endless harmony bruce wrote prior to holland as ten yrs of harmony, goin on adapted from all dressed up for school from 64..

Ive seen ALOT of misconceptions of the beach boys solid work vs the mediocrity following Holland w the exception of Love You. With 15 big ones being a mix of covers and old rehashed outtakes and Love You being BW solo w the BB name slapped on it... MIU, light album and keepin the summer alive werent just poor albums, they had no hit singles, hardly anything regarded as rockNroll and to sum it up those albums have no substantial historical value whatsoever...yet Surfer Girl-All Summer Long-Summer Days-Pet Sounds-Smiley Smile-Sunflower were/are the greatest and most substantial output by any band in history...and fifty yrs after their debut they put out a brand new lp that almost tops the chart..milestone to say the least.

Jus like 20/20, and MIU the Light album is a collection of odds&ends, outtakes etc.

Too much 'iffy' stuff ahead of Holland.  Lists are just that.  Lists.  Unless you're going grocery shopping...they're pretty much useless. Razz
true. I say its more than evident that Holland was their last group effort...15 big ones being a mix of covers and either older tracks and/or previously recorded songs,, Love You was Brians album w the groups name contractually placed on it, and MIU, Light album and KTSA were hodgepodges of older songs, aborted solo leftovers etc.

I'm confused Kook, which album do you consider to be the last true Beach Boys album? And which ones are just a collection of cuts?
