1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love and Mercy - News and Reviews - First clip is out. on: March 14, 2015, 08:15:39 PM
Can someone please give a description of the trailer? i missed it
A lot of Cusack with Giamatti telling 'Brian' that he's not allowed to see 'Melinda'. Opens with Good Vibrations, then segues to I Get Around and God Only Knows for the background music.
Very Landy/Melinda-centric. Opens with Brian inside a Cadillac at the dealership acting strange (his shoes are on the floor by the car) and Melinda seems put off. Landy introduces Brian to her, almost like he's bragging that he knows Brian Wilson. They intersperse some Beach Boys stuff, recording of Pet Sounds, Brian asking if they can get a horse into the studio, talking about how they can't let the Beatles beat them. Split second shot of Murry smacking him as a child.

The main focus of the trailer though is the Landy/Melinda struggle. They show Landy telling her he's giving her "unprecedented access" to Brian and wants her to report back everything they talk about to him. It shows them on a date but there are 2 other people there (I assume Landy assistants, one might be Alexandra Morgan). Brian confides to her that he's a prisoner and being over-medicated, one of Landy's people coming in with a duffel bag saying it's time for his meds. Brian tells her he hears voices and didn't tell her before because he didn't want to scare her off. One scene in the studio where Brian asks Landy why he can't be with Melinda and Landy tells him he can't be with anyone. Melinda tells Brian she has to walk away because she doesn't want to be one more person trying to use him. Landy angrily threatens Melinda, punches the window of what I assume is her office at the car dealership. Melinda seeing how regimented Brian's life is- yelling at Brian for eating because he isn't really hungry, he just thinks he is. The climax is Melinda telling Brian that if he wants they can walk away from Landy forever.

There is more, little bits and pieces of their courtship and one of the Wrecking Crew telling Brian that they played with Elvis and Sinatra but he is blowing their minds. Mostly the trailer looks almost like a romance drama- particularly one scene where Brian says Landy makes him say "I love you" 5 times a day, Melinda asking if it works and Brian saying he wishes he had someone else to say it to. That's all I can remember offhand.

No doubt about it. If nothing else you KNOW Hoover started one for him in '67 when Carl was fighting the draft.

And on the 1st Beach Boys "Full House" episode Brian is wearing a Californians for Dukakis T-shirt in the "Kokomo" shots. You know that probably made old Ronnie add to the file Wink

No more "California Dreamin'?" Has a prayer been answered?  Cheesy
I admit it sounded awesome so far (judging from clips), and Brian seemed really into it, but I'd wish for another BBs original instead. I'm curious if they keep it in the set list for Europe - I bet most of the casual audience (at least in Germany) would take it for a BBs song, if they perform it. Same would go for "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".  Grin
This is the only cover song in the setlist I am not a fan of- but honestly I'll take any Brian lead I can get.

As an aside, should I pick this DVD up?

Although just listening to Midnight's Another Day from the 'gig' on it, and you can hear Brian singing harmonies?! (Like, he's singing his lead and harmonies as well) Is the whole thing just miming along to the record?
I have reason to believe it is a real live gig- I think they just used the album audio for the trailer because the sound was purer. The only thing that is done in playback as far as I know are the spoken interludes, but that was the case even on the tour because they had synced them up to the videos they showed at the concerts.

Of course the more obvious giveaway that he's not lip syncing is the fact that this show was clearly recorded before the album was finished because of certain things that are missing:

The "Driving through the maze of the Hollywood Hills" verse isn't in "Morning Beat" yet and the "In the flow of the Ocean" verse isn't in "Southern California." They are still in the rough-cut form we hear on the infamous leaked demos, but I've listened to those demos enough to know that the vocals on the DVD gig aren't the same so they didn't just lip-sync the demos. For instance, the demos of the title track don't have the "Show me that river" verse on the title track but the performance here does. Similarly, the demo versions of "Forever My Surfer Girl" don't have the "So long, so long ago" verse like the performance on the DVD does.

That's not to say that there aren't more demos out there that I haven't heard where the aforementioned augmentations aren't there, but from all the source material I have nothing matches up to the DVD performance, and the vocals sound pretty live to my ears.

Hope this (over)abundance of info is helpful! I think you'd be doing yourself a tremendous dis-service to not get it- plus the doc. on the DVD is one of my favorites with some of Brian's most fluent interviews.

1. Wouldn't it be Nice: This gets ranked number one solely for the fact that I would never have even given the BBs a second thought had it not been for this song. In fact I actively made it a point to avoid them because I resented my parents naming me after Dennis (side note they weren't even big Beach Boys fans but huge Fleetwood Mac fans, and this was when the stories of Dennis and Christine were just hitting the tabloids, so they mercifully didn't name me Lindsey or Mick). I was on a college camping trip about 10 years ago and the only album we had in the cabin was "Pet Sounds." My friend Grant had been trying to sell me on the BBs forever and I just wasn't having it. I agreed he could play this song because I knew it and didn't hate it. Total awakening on that trip for me after he played the rest of the album.

2. Soulful Old Man Sunshine: I love that it is kind of a throwback to their very early records but benefits from a much more sophisticated arrangement and vocal.

3. Lady Lynda: I love how any song Al sang lead on gave the band a uniquely different sound than what was typical of them, and the harmony part at the end never ceases to amaze me.

4. Love Surrounds Me: One of my favorite Dennis vocals. Its almost ethereal.

5. And Your Dream Comes True: It takes one of these acapella tracks to truly appreciate how well these guys blended their voices.

6. I'm Waiting for the Day: So many of the Beach Boys love songs are passive and wishful, I love how aggressive and assertive this one is, and the way the drums reflect it.

7. In My Room: This song just weeps in the most gorgeous way.

8. Don't Worry Baby: It's everything I love about the Spector sound but kicked up a notch. It sounds like it could be the "better" sequel to Be My Baby.

9. When I Grow Up to be a Man: I started fearing I wasn't so young anymore when I hit 30 a few years ago- I think anyone who is conscious of time feels a kinship to this song.

10. Endless Harmony: I am a sucker for songs that have an air of autobiography about them, even if they are corny. Since I couldn't pick something more substantial off TLOS since I am guessing this list should be strictly BB tracks, I went with this one.

At the Calgary 2011 Gershwin Show:

"I want you to yell really loud in between songs so I know I didn't bore you to death"

and

BW: "There are lots of different kinds of rock and roll, but my favorite is heavy metal!"
Scott: "Really Brian?"
BW: "Yeah, really heavy stuff like Little Richard!"
Scott: "Brian, I just thought of another kind of rock and roll. Genius rock!"
BW: "GENIUS ROCK! YEAH!"
