51  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Deluxe Set on: September 29, 2012, 12:31:20 PM
now, I'm no expert, because I've only taken one graduate-level linguistics course, but I have a huge problem with people correcting each other. "alot" is a word because people use it.

let me show you something:

The soft morow ande the lustee Aperill,
The wynter set, the stormys in exill,
Quhen that the brycht and fresch illumynare
Uprisith arly in his fyré chare
His hot courss into the orient,
And frome his spere his goldine stremis sent
Wpone the grond, in maner off mesag

What language is this, you ask? English. English hundreds of years ago. How did we get from there to here?

People spelling things the way they damn well pleased. People spelling things in a way that were right to them. "Alot" is a valid English word because it is used by a large group of English speakers. Maybe it's not "proper", but there was a time that "from" was spelt "frome", and if you omitted the E it was wrong.

But guess what? ENOUGH PEOPLE OMITTED THAT FUCKING E. Language is not something that's set in stone. It's fluid. It evolves. If a language does not evolve, it becomes a dead language. English is not a dead language. Stop being a dick.

52  Smiley Smile Stuff / Concert Reviews / Re: The Final Gig: Wembley Arena - London, UK 9/28/12 on: September 29, 2012, 12:13:38 PM
Just echoing all the positive comments really.

Great gig and Al really shone vocally (the forgotten first line was a great moment!).  Loved seeing the history of the band represented and all members getting their chance to shine.

I was in A2 and, whilst the seats were great, was a bit peeved by the over zealous ushers trying to get people out of the aisle.  Also strange considering what people must have paid for tickets the amount of people frequently getting up to leave/talking during songs etc.  Always going to be a factor at a big gig though and not enough to ruin the show.

The sound was a bit murky in places with vocals not being caught here and there too.  Felt sorry for Bruce as his voice really strained a couple of times.

As a huge BB fan who has only been to BW shows it was really amazing seeing stuff like Disney Girls, Cottonfields, All This is That and California being performed by Bruce, Al or the group as a whole etc.

Hopefully some of this gig will make it to the eventual tour DVD, there was a bit of filming in the aisle of audience members dancing etc.

My girlfriend, who has got into the beach boys and BW more and more during our time together was fully converted after the gig like it was some kind of religious experience, well I suppose it was just that for me and plenty in attendance Smiley

play.com has the date as 24th Sept so yeh, looks like a mistake.
54  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So what exactly will the 50th Anniversary box set entail? on: August 20, 2012, 02:46:53 PM
Just read this after going to Smilin' Ed's link to the Hoff:

"BTW, a Japanese Blu-Spec double-CD of PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE/BAMBU will be released on July 4th and features a 2012 remastering job."

Never heard about this. Anybody here pick up this release yet?

Got this recently, I've not listened to the discs yet, it seems to be the same release as the Legacy edition but in mini LP packaging.  With my hi-fi set up (and ears) I can't hear difference between 'normal' CDs and the 'Blu Spec' ones.  Not sure on the 2012 remastering, can't remember that being referred to on the packaging.  Most of it is in Japanese however....

Back on topic with the box set whilst I would love to see a 'rarities/unreleased' only set I'm happy that the band is getting a (hopefully) 'definitive' box set across 6 discs.

Can't wait to see content/packaging!!!  As soon as details emerge my partner will get the Xmas present hints :D

If folks don't buy the first wave of reissues, the second wave may never hit the shore, at least in the USA.

This is the quandary, I want to show 'support' for the reissues but (and it's an OCD/collector thing!) I wouldn't buy a set of anything unless I knew the whole series (film series/book series etc) was being done in the same style/design/remastering etc.

Capitol/TBB have my cash for the box set/tour/tour merchandise/TWGMTR/TSS at the mo anyway so they should have gotten the hint from all Beach Boys fans/general public/#3 album that it's worth doing this properly!
57  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Details on the new greatest hits albums and remasters on: August 09, 2012, 10:49:45 AM
I like the image for the GH set, the 50 Big Ones cover doesn't need '50 big ones, greatest hits' though as it's too busy.  Just put 'Big Ones' under the BB50 logo in the same font.

I won't buy any of the remastered albums until we know that the other main albums are getting the same treatment.  At least the missing 60's albums and hopefully C&TP, Holland and the late 70s stuff (especially Love You).

I'll certainly 'acquire' the new albums when they become available but won't start paying cash for an incomplete collection.

Hopefully the box will be 'rarities' focused as we have 2 new GH sets for Joe Public.

Ideally a 'complete box' of remastered albums AND a multi disc rarities set.

If we end up getting basically an updated GV box I will be dissapointed.

Having said that I'm seeing The Beach Boys live next month (never thought I'd say that) and I love TWGMTR and TSS so as a fan I feel spoiled already!

Tower Records in Shibuya is my music purchase mecca.  Spent soooo much money there!

Wish I could read Japanese as there were plaenty of cool looking books/guides on sunshine pop etc.
59  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson - Beach Boys Family - Japan Mini LP Box Set on: July 31, 2012, 11:54:43 AM
Got POB from this set last week, nice addition to the mini LP collection.

I would have got Youngblood AND Carl Wilson had they released the first album also.

Has 'Carl Wilson' ever been given a CD release by itself or as a twofer?
60  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Beach Boys 2012 Remasters! on: July 27, 2012, 10:54:32 AM
The CD Japan (my favoured site for buying Japanese CDs) story makes me think the albums are coming out in the west.

Limiting who sells the CDs so that a popular exporter doesn't sell them suggests they are trying to 'region lock' the albums.

The only reason I could see them doing that would be to preserve sales elsewhere for later.

If there's no news for a western release come December I'll pick some up in Japan on holiday but hopefully by September (is that the end of the tour?) we should know one way or the other.

Got the POB mini LP a few weeks ago.  Not really that special as other mini LPs because the normal Legacy release of the album was amazing in terms of packaging etc but nice to have a POB that fits with my Beach Boys mini LPs Smiley

Glad these new mixes are coming, mildly peeved by the art design.  That white side strip is too similar to the Beatles reissues but I guess that's what they were going for.
63  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson And Rumbo on: July 06, 2012, 10:15:25 AM
Googa -- not yet....and in fact, the "Lady" you have is probably a re-edited version....it's on one of those Capitol compilations, right? The original single version starts with Dennis singing over a drum machine, then everything else kicks in.

Then I've got the original! On a comp All Back to Mine curated by Manic Street Preachers.

It's also on the Super Furry Animals curated 'Under The Influence' album (which also has Feel Flows).

Great to see Dennis' influence on modern bands Smiley
64  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: M.I.U vs L.A. on: June 26, 2012, 10:34:20 AM
L.A has some great tracks on it but M.I.U is a more consistent listen start to finish IMO and is therefore a 'better album.'

Just in terms of age I'd second all the Buddy Holly shouts.

Definitely the first name to mind when reading the thread title.

67  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why Were Carl & Dennis So Easy To \ on: June 15, 2012, 04:29:40 PM
My question is why unlike other groups that have lost an original member or two (Keith Moon from "The Who" for example) have there been seemingly no absence felt by the general public in regards to Dennis and Carl Wilson?

I think the short answer to the question is that the 'general public' couldn't name the members of The Who, Pink Floyd, The Beach Boys etc.  In fact the only band that could have that band member name recognition from the 60's would be The Beatles, maybe the Bee Gees.

In other words these things are important to/felt by fans of the groups but don't have much importantance to anyone else.

Example being when Carl Wilson passed most of my friends/colleagues did not know who he was.

O2 sounds probable but I hope it's the RFH, and on a Saturday as I'm outta holidays this year!

I can break the bank to go see 'em again as it's more than likely the last time they'll be all touring together.
72  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Collecting Beach Boys on CDs on: June 13, 2012, 05:35:44 AM

omg holy cow, is this heaven?
can't find any box for the 70's ones tho (or late 60's) Sad

aren't they officialy available anymore? isn't there an website other than stuff like ebay where you can buy those?

As I understand it they are only 'promo' boxes normally available when you purchase a 'set' of releases.  After the initial release of a series they are no longer available AFAIK.
73  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Collecting Beach Boys on CDs on: June 13, 2012, 05:05:43 AM
I've ordered from these guys before and they are fantastic. Never had a problem from Japan to the U.S. Purchased Beach Boys mini lps and other titles. You can check their store to see the different titles and bands available. The Beach Boy titles have gone up quite a bit since I last purchased any.

http://myworld.ebay.com/eiselvis&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SELLERID&_trksid=p3984.m1543.l2533

I'll recommend that seller again (another link a page back) very prompt delivery and goods as described.  As you say, does seem like the prices have gone up a little bit though.

I love those boxes but to buy them with no CDs is usually around £80!

Wish they did a mini LP style release for TWGMTR like they did for TLOS.
74  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Collecting Beach Boys on CDs on: June 12, 2012, 02:09:37 PM
Random CD news, mini LPs of POB, Youngblood, Bruce's Going Public and Surfin round the World are being reissued in Japan next month.

Seems strange but the mini LPs do get reissued near to tour dates of bands etc.  I picked up some Yes albums (out of print for ages) as they were reissued for their Japan tour.  Interesting that the BB albums aren't being reissued, don't know if that's because they are readily available or due to Capitol's reissue plans for the catalogue (if any).

The weirdest thing about these reissues is Terry Melcher's Royal Flush seems part of the same reissue programme. There's even a 'Beach Boys Family' promo box apparently.

Has the 'Carl Wilson' album ever been offered on CD outside of Japan (I've only seen Youngblood), was there ever a twofer of his albums on CD?  Strange that the Melcher album is there and not both Carl albums.

Even though the 2 cd release of POB is a gorgeous package I got suckered in by the mini LP and went for the pre order on that one.

I should have used Justin's '3 days in the basket' method!  Bah!

I'll second the salmon sashimi and the full english.

If I have both those in one day I'm a very happy man Smiley
