McCartney's hair is his....he started dying it when he started touring solo in '89. It looked alright then and he would even leave some grey in. But now sometiems it looks a bit ridiculous being 72 with dark brown hair. Although, I can't imagine him waking up one day and saying sod it and going white....
902  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Muting the keys on: August 08, 2014, 05:31:13 PM
After intently watching Brian at both C50 and on the Jeff Beck tour......I can't say I heard his piano once.

As for Bruce, I only hear his keyboard on Disney Girls. It sounds like a cheesy 80's electric piano and is very audbile on the last verse when it's stripped down.

As long as we're picking apart the keyboardists....when's the last time anyone heard what the hell Al Jardine was playing on his guitar in concert?!?......seems to be a trend with the boys after they picked up their big ole backing bands.

Bruce also seems to have stopped dying his hair since the C50 tour. All throughout the 2013/2014 shows I've seen, it's been white popping out of that hat....not "McCartney Brown"  LOL

I know these are big hits, but even those don't get played that much anymore....during my week at the beach I heard Good Vibrations, Sloop John B, Help Me Rhonda, and Surfin' Safari in various locations/radio stations....

This person posted several quality videos of last night's show w/ David:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m25N1d_q830&list=UU2M6BVrNGCvlVRlS1WujjgQ

Also Bruce sings GOK here, listen for that keyboard note that he plays at the beginning.

That was actually the first time I heard Bruce sing GOK.  He sounded great!

I agree. I kind of wish Mike and Bruce didn't pursue the use of the Carl Wilson recording after C50. It was a really special thing to do during that time in 2012, especially for Brian to be onstage with it. But it does seem to cheapen the concept a bit in this M&B setting.

When I saw them in OC last year they did this and I could hear the old woman next to me lean to her husband and go "Carl Wilson was the father, right?"........point being, probably about 90% of Mike and Bruce's usual crowd simply do not care.

Anybody go to Ventura last night? Saw this clip on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h09QbCsCR5A

I'm gonna go see them in Saratoga tonight, say hi to me if you're there.

Geez....why doesn't Stamos just tour by himself? He's the one getting all the reaction!

Mike sounded unusually croaky on that one.
907  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce Tour 2014 on: July 29, 2014, 02:22:33 PM
Seems Lancaster crowds are classy like that: back in '05 my friends & I were giving "Sail On, Sailor" a good telling off and a blue-rinsed old biddy turned around and screeched "I paid good money to hear THEM sing, not YOU !"

So of course we did the only possible thing. Sang louder.  Grin

 LOL

This venue is about the only place in Lancaster where anything happens. It was a sold out show, and I'm pretty sure the entire AARP age bracket of Lancaster County  had a late night Monday. Another funnier moment, Mike encouraged everyone to shine their cell phones on "Surfer Girl" but he had to call the roadie out to do it for him....and of course, none of the old folks in the crowd knew what they were doing or even had cell phones....

Thoughts on Mike & Bruce (and Stamos) in Lancaster....

John Stamos was definitely entertaining and it wsa fun to see him there and shake things up a bit. However, I can definitely see why people get annoyed that he's there. The overall musicianship definitely took a hit. There were way too many songs without John Cowsill on drums, and it showed. Stamos played a lot more than I expected, or remembered from my first Beach Boys concert in 2010.

Anyway, the setlist was basically a Greatest Hits Plus type show. The more unusual songs included "Please Let Me Wonder", "Still Cruisin", "Forever"(of course), "Pisces Brothers" and "All Summer Long". I guess it isn't that odd that Pisces Brothers was played but let's just say, I won't be losing sleep if I never hear it again.

There were a lot of vocal blips all across the board. From what I could hear, it was mostly Foskett & Mike. I really do not know why they gave Jeffrey all of Randell's leads. Randell was definitely much stronger last year. As I said, Mike was also hitting a lot of bum notes in the harmony stack. "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" was pretty rough. However, there is plenty of positivity to report on! Mike's leads sound strong as ever. All those early surf/car song medleys are great as always. John Cowsill is probably the biggest asset this band has. As I said, it's a shame he spent so much time off the kit last night however, his vocals nearly made up for it. "Darlin" was superb as always and it was really great to have him down front on "Help Me Rhonda" for a change, he's a great frontman....better than Mike!! There was no "Wild Honey" last night....bummer.

Also, I'd like to take a moment for Bruce! I was ragging on his vocals in a clip on the last page, but his vocals were VERY loud last night, and spot on. "Please Let Me Wonder" was especially gorgeous. That was probably the highlight of the show for me, actually. "Disney Girls" was remarkable as well and all his falsetto lines throughout the night were of a much greater quality than Foskett's.

On "Surfin' USA" a few folks from this otherwise dead crowd ran down the stage, I thought for sure they'd get dragged off but nope! They stayed! So we went down on the encore and were basically in the front row for the encore. Mike waved to my girlfriend (of course...) and pointed at me on "A lot of guys try to catch her..." just like on C50. I called Bruce's name at the end as we were almost in front of him but he didn't even twitch. Foskett walked by and shook a few hands but not the woman next to me, who decided the appropriate response to being ignored by a back-up beach boy was "SHAKE MY HAND ASSHOLE!"....needless to say, he just kept walking.  Cool

I suppose they've learned from last fall! yikes!

Saw them at the AMT in Lancaster (granted nine years ago...) and the setlist was kinda halfway between the meat & potatoes 90 minutes GH and a  2 hours plus UK theater setlist. 43 songs including, astonishingly, "'Til I Die" and "All This Is That". Since then Cowsill has taken over the drum stool and Scott T is now MD, so musical excellence is assured.

 w00t!

Looks like I'll get to report some first hand experience this summer....just got tix to see Mike and Bruce in Lancaster on Monday. John Stamos was added to the show, and my girlfriend hasn't seen them with him in the lineup, so we went for it! Looking forward to *hopefully* a longer theatre set.
912  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce Tour 2014 on: July 23, 2014, 06:57:46 AM
In all fairness, I only watch the first three minutes....but could anyone else hear Bruce's harmony sticking out on the chorus of "Do it Again" in ALL the wrong ways?....
913  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Valentine's Day 2015 on: July 03, 2014, 08:01:17 PM
At some point during the day they changed the verbiage to reflect the actual lineup.
Credit where it's due -- the revised wording is much, much better.

Though I have to question how many "brand new songs recently recorded for That’s Why God Made The Radio" attendees are going to hear.   LOL

If they're lucky?........MAYBE "Isn't it Time". I think M&B played that a small handful of times through 2012/2013. I didn't hear it at the three shows I attended but, there's youtube clips. It sounded very bare and disappointing, so I'd imagine that's why they aren't playing it. Of course, it's also very hypocritical. But no ukuklele, Totten sang lead, Bruce had the chorus line all to himself.
914  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al joining Mike and Bruce for Jones Beach show on: July 01, 2014, 10:17:24 PM
There are a multitude of unanswered questions that we fans on this board would like to see answered. However, presently, are there any questions more important than what would it take to change/amend the license, do the voters even WANT to change the license...

Think the answer to that is obvious: no. The only person who would want to is Alan. Mike's happy doing what he loves as the legally sanctioned (touring) Beach Boys... Carl's estate isn't going to pass up on a nice chunk of cash every year obtained by doing precisely nothing purely on a point of alleged artistic integrity... ditto Brian's management (Brian himself could likely care less, to judge by his infrequent comments on the situation), the more so as he now has a separate identity: any way you slice that, it's a 3-1 vote. Ain't gonna happen.

Totally agree. Next question....Why doesn't it (the positions that you laid out) seem to bother fans on this board? Because they/we/I LIKE this setup? Because they/we/I know that NOTHING is going to change? Why isn't there more outrage that our band is going down the path of The Platters on a PBS Special? Do you realize how dangerously close that is true? God forbid, but Bruce could visit his cardiologist next week for a checkup, and the doctor could advise him to retire from the road. Mike would then hire a keyboardist to replace Bruce. Would anyone - Mike, Brian, Al, Carl's Estate - even blink?

My guess is that Mike would hire David Marks, and if he said no, Mike would bring Alan back in. Mike knows he needs at least one other member to be taken seriously at all.

Given that he's been touring with Bruce since 1998 in this configuration and there's a huge segment of the fanbase that hasn't "taken him seriously" for one second of that time (2012 excepted of course), your premise is at best shaky. Remember, it's Mike who has the license and as long as he adheres to the terms laid down, he could tour with One Direction/5 Seconds Of Summer backing him up if he so wished. Fact is, however unpalatable it is to some folk here, at the vast majority of the shows these days, the punters don;t care who's up there playing: they come to hear the music. At HCP, I doubt more than 150 of the 3000 attending knew who was who. Or cared.

Then why does he keep Bruce around at all?

Mike can't clap. Have you heard him with that tambourine from hell?
915  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al joining Mike and Bruce for Jones Beach show on: June 30, 2014, 09:09:10 PM

Assuming the date went on Al’s website with Al’s knowledge (and to some degree, even if it was without his knowledge, the site does bear his name after all), he owes the fans an apology for the confusion and for those who bought tickets because of his reported appearance.

Anything else, especially in terms of the legal side of things, we really can’t say. Again, Al would have to be either really misguided and have really bad representation if he’s on the hook legally for pulling out of the show. And you know what? If he is, then he’ll pay the price just like anybody in that situation would. While I would (and do) feel the entire situation is pretty sad, I wouldn’t feel extra bad for Al if he is on the hook legally.

As for being “difficult” to work with, I’m a bit confused then why Mike didn’t tell Live Nation “no” to even the idea of playing with Al. If pulling out of this gig “burned bridges”, then I sense those bridges were already pretty well toast to begin with, and I suspect slow ticket sales may have motivated both Live Nation and Mike to “allow” Al to be in his own band for an evening. If someone ever gets Al to talk about his debacle, perhaps Al would suggest the “bridge” was “burned” by Mike in the negotiation process.

Well, I think it`s clear that there had been a thawing of relations in recent months (until the cancellation). Al appeared at Mike`s award show which Mike seemingly appreciated and Mike`s comments about Al in the press have been much more positive than in the past. From Mike`s perspective it probably wouldn`t have seemed such a big deal to play one gig with Al at a nice venue.

Don't forget Al's birthday salute to Mike on his FB. "Good Vibrations from Big Sur to Tahoe" or something like that. Mike shared this on his FB I think. Those two are probably on good terms-- this seems like an episode of sloppy business/comunication, not bad feelings between those two.

I hope I'm not misquoting, but I believe it was AGD who said Mike and Bruce said, bridges have been burnt with Al.

Finally, Mike and Bruce went for some new T-shirt designs! Can't say I'd buy any of em though....
917  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce Tour 2014 on: June 25, 2014, 08:31:30 PM
Has anyone honestly thought that band recorded Pet Sounds? Come on.....really? Scott Totten and Tim B. don't even look like they were alive in 1966!
918  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al joining Mike and Bruce for Jones Beach show on: June 23, 2014, 07:27:01 PM
So after all that I think the conclusion is still.....ALAN handled this the most unprofessionally. If he hadn't posted it on his own pages and sites, I'd say Mike was most unprofessional because of not asking Alan himself. There's no reason to drag Brian, Bruce, or David into this. I don't see where they have done anything at all, really.
919  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al joining Mike and Bruce for Jones Beach show on: June 21, 2014, 06:47:35 PM
David has just re-confirmed on facebook that he is playing at Jones Beach.

So of course, this means taht he will not be in the UK with Brian & Al. Does this mean that we've seen the end of BAD?
920  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al joining Mike and Bruce for Jones Beach show on: June 21, 2014, 06:49:48 AM
By the same token, if someone was promoting the gig without a firm legally binding assurance that Al was to appear, that's where the fault lies. Al might not have left Red Barn for several months and might not have been aware of the publicity. (That's just me speculating btw…)

I agree that it should have all been signed and sealed before it was announced.

But I can`t believe at all that Al could have been oblivious to the fact that it had been announced that he was playing a show with Mike.

Like I've said already, I'm sure there were behind the scenes discussions that were going on the whole time. And now the joke that Al made at the AC show makes that much more sense. He'd been very positive about Mike since the Ella Awards up until that moment so something clearly went afoot between the two of them between this Jones Beach PR that Mike's team put out and prior to the AC show.

Is it unprofessional of Al to not show up for a show he was billed as attending and had ostensibly agreed to do? Yes, a bit.
Do we know the circumstances and agreements (or lack thereof) that lead to his name being put on the bill (while David's is still absent) and subsequent PR? No, we don't.

Until we know a little more information, why don't we all just keep calm and listen to Pet Sounds, eh? And for those that bought tickets on condition of Al being there, call Jones Beach/Live Nation and absolutely demand a refund. I'm sure they'll be accommodating and maybe you'll find out some information from the promoters standpoint in doing so...

FWIW, ticket sales are still very poor for the show: http://concerts.livenation.com/event/1D004C96A49ED655.

Has anyone actually looked at that chart? They're out of their mind! Does Mike really think that many people are gonna be into this Club Kokomo bullshit for $250 a hit? Because it clearly is NOT working. Unless you wanna sit in the last two levels, you're paying over $100 for this show and without Alan and David, I would not say it is worth it. I paid $70 for 5th row Mike & Bruce last year, and I Don't think I'd pay a whole lot over that. The Lovin' Spoonful will be a waste of time, Felix Cavaliere is indeed a massive talent and is probably partially responsible for amplified face value tickets, but Mike is the reason behind the VIP's. That's outrageous.
921  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al joining Mike and Bruce for Jones Beach show on: June 20, 2014, 07:20:21 PM
Am I dense, or did Al not say he was backing out of this show, but rather he wasn't touring with The Bruce Boys?

He said he was performing with Brian in the UK that weekend, so unless he's gonna use the time zones to his advantage....
922  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al joining Mike and Bruce for Jones Beach show on: June 20, 2014, 03:40:07 PM
It's amazing how much slack Mike is getting out of this simply because Alan backed out of his show, and was suddenly added to Brian's show. It seems like all of this motion was in Alan's court or maybe even Brian's. Brian was losing band members left and right, now he's got the father-son duo AND he gets to up the original member ante for the band AND gets to screw Mike out of being one step (and maybe the most crucial step) closer to being The Beach Boys that the public wants (just short of giving himself back over that is.)
923  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce Tour 2014 on: June 19, 2014, 04:26:49 PM
[

I'll attend both outdoor amphitheater shows in Spain this summer, which they will surely be great like in Catalonia and Madrid in 2010 and 2011. The highlights were Hearts, Disney Girls, Bluebirds OVer the Mountain, Good To My Baby, etc.
But if these November shows are going to be like in 2004 or 2008 (with Til I Die, Everyone's in Love With You, You Still Believe In Me, All This Is That, etc), I'd like to know it. Maybe I'd consider attending the Paris or Wembley ones.

While they may not play 54 songs again, I would have thought there is little doubt that the Wembley show will be a very long setlist with several rarities. The only way I could see it being otherwise is if a support band were announced to try to shift tickets.

There's gotta be another band, I don't see Mike and Bruce cutting it. Have they EVER played Wembley on their own?

Or perhaps there won't be another band, maybe just other band members.........
924  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Recent Pro-shot Mike & Bruce(and Foskett) videos on: June 05, 2014, 02:12:04 PM
Nah, Jeff has never been a great singer and isn`t now.

Well, both Brian and Mike obviously disagree. (Have you and Kitty ever been seen in the same room? Wink )

Going by that reasoning, Mike and Bruce thought Adrian Baker was a great singer...

I don`t subscribe to Kitty`s views that Foskett is suddenly singing better. He sounds quite good on some songs and moderately painful (to my ears) on others which is the way it has always been.

Jeff is mostly maintaining, but his voice is continuing to lose it's appeal as time goes on, just as most voices do. I think it would be wise for Jeff's health, Randall's musicianship, and the band's sound if Randall took a few of his leads back, and maybe even gave Scott Totten a few more.

Ouch....the only thing that clip has going for it is Cowsill.
