Totally normal. That's one difference between Brian Wilson's crowds and "The Beach Boys" crowds...and thus has been the case their entire career. I actually wrote a paper about their ambiguity for my American Musical History class freshman year of college. They did this to themselves and created a "brand" for the media's eye instead of a "band". It's one reason why The Beatles had no trouble surpassing them (and many others) in popularity stateside.

When I end up discussing the Beach Boys in any sort of social setting, I'll always try to instigate just how much band member knowledge they have. Most people know Brian Wilson as the crazy genius behind it all. A few people know Mike Love, and always have a negative connotation of him. They are often aware of "Wilson Brothers" and that one drowned. Alan, Bruce, and David are seldom ever mentioned.

Mike made a comment when introducing Rob to the audience about how it’s good to “keep things in the family.” Which made me chuckle because that’s a very Murry Wilson thing to say, and I know from reading his autobiography that if there is one person who Mike despises above all others, it’s Murry — and rightfully so I might add.

HA! Wow. This guy...

This is probably a piece of speculation that is going a bit too far, I understand if I'm called out for it. I do not believe anyone is making tour but Brian Wilson himself. Is it possible that Brian is forcing himself to do this? Is he actually causing himself physical pain and making himself get out on the road and on stage even when he isn't physically or mentally for it? Pressure to do this could come from a past of NOT doing it that much, the success of recent years, a desire to keep the music alive on stage etc. Maybe those around him should try and convince him of a different performance arrangement. Maybe he could work out a residency arrangement close to home at a theatre somewhere, like Billy Joel has done at MSG and do one or two appearances in big cities elsewhere in the country at his leisure.

As a sort of mixture of a “here’s what I would do” pitch as well as a “what I think might actually happen” summation, I think the Zombies tour dates will feature unavoidably shorter shows. If it’s anything like the 2013 Beck shows in terms of show length, we’re looking at the Brian set being maybe 70-80 minutes, and maybe featuring 20-25 songs? So perhaps they need to close ranks even more and really have Al, Matt, Darian, and Blondie do even more leads. This will unavoidably decrease Brian’s lead vocal role in the show, but if it’s a choice between doing this very challenged singing in front of audiences versus audiences just noting that Brian is handing a lot of leads off, I think the latter is better at this stage, or less problematic anyway.

I agree completely and truly hope that is the outcome we get. That should help Brian to feel he's making the most meaningful contributions on stage, too.

There's definitely truth to that, as you say many posters here have mentioned the switch on the first couple years of the tour however, it has been expanding to the remainder of the set from there.

I've seen "Pet Sounds" three times...August 2016 in Baltimore was a bad night for Brian. Generally disengaged the entire evening. September 2016 in Bethesda, MD was THE best I have ever seen Brian. He was not just singing but belting the tunes from Pet Sounds and beyond, very animated with the crowd (ex. row, row, row your boat), cursing like CRAZY the whole night etc. and most recently, November 2018 in DC with the NSO was the worst shape I've seen Brian in. Not necessarily singing poorly, but mostly not singing and then stammering through Pet Sounds. He was not present that evening. After the final notes of "Love and Mercy" he very loudly said into the microphone "is that it, Paul?" before fidgeting to maneuver off stage.

I know there's an answer...but Brian will have to find it by himself.

I think that vocal approach is so exceptionally jarring because you have Brian speaking his way through it, and then this beautiful soaring vocal from Matt Jardine that sounds damn near like the record and it so thoroughly accentuates what Brian is NOT doing on stage. The Pet Sounds shows should've ended in 2016 after the original (FINAL 50th Ann.) run of shows was done.

Here's Mike, Bruce, and Scott Totten with Ringo & the all starrs on "with a little help..."

Mike appears to not really know the words and relies on doing his usually thumbs ups and crowd points, Bruce sings some really nice harmonies that stick out in a good way, but then freezes when they go into "Give Peace a Chance" and never does the peace fingers...Scott looks like he's having a ball, and rightfully so!

Anybody seeing M&B opening for Ringo & The All Starrs tonight?

I won't say all because I didn't see every item, but all the records and photos I saw them carrying already had Mike and Bruce's autograph as well as a few Brian Wilson autographs. I'd imagine they're trying to complete the set and then sell it as signed by "THE BEACH BOYS".

Good point; that would carry an extra premium of course.

The band itself has very rarely sold full group autographs; it was pretty much just C50 and even then they sometimes had trouble at certain gigs on C50 getting items signed by the whole group in time to get it to the merch table (at the show I went to, they had signed group photos but hadn't been able to get the guys to sign any programs).

I have to admit to finding amusing some of the stories of fans awkwardly trying to get Blondie *not* to sign certain stuff at the Brian meet-and-greets (e.g. albums he isn't on). Or, of Brian signing the same thing twice, or one guy singing on top of another, etc.

I was quite disappointed to find NO signed group items at the C50 show I attended with the exception of Al's solo CD which I purchased that day. However, before intermission I remember Mike pitching his "buy 10 CD's and an 11th signed" shtick so they must have had some but maybe only for that offer. I've acquired multiple autographs from all living band members mostly from the stage of a concert at its conclusion and with no real force or effort. In fact the only band member I don't have multiple signatures of is Brian. A friend of mine took my C50 meet-n-greet photo into another meet-n-greet they attended and had it signed for me to complete the set.

I'm not fond of purchasing autographs. I see the purpose of possessing it as a proof of interaction with that special person either in a concert setting or a private setting. I don't mind paying to have something signed, but not unless I'm going to be in the room to express my gratitude to the artist and indeed verify it is authentic.

I could be wrong and it could just be a minor thing, but I don't believe I've ever seen Mike and Bruce sell signed merchandise at their shows before (the poster). Interesting!

That's bizarre. He's done photos at both shows I've seen at this venue. There were a few autograph hounds at the end of the line as I was leaving and it sounded like his wife was refusing the insane number of records they wanted signed but other than that, very chill!

Excellent show from Alan this evening! We got "Luau", "Santa Ana Winds" (YAY!), "Surf's Up" AND the "Mama Says" Wild Honey album spin on "Vegetables" after the regular cut, along with a good chunk of "Don't Fight The Sea" after someone shouted it out...but then it got really abrasive and absurd. I've never understood the fascination with shouting songs out at a performer. They've prepared a show...sit back and enjoy it, reach out before or after if you have a request/idea. Anyway- excellent set of songs and stories from Alan and the band. Meet and Greet afterwards was wonderful too. I got to thank Al for "Santa Ana Winds" and reminded him I requested it last time after the show, he said that I was one of two people there that knew it.  LOL  I also thanked him for "Surf's Up" and he was very modest but I said it's insane to even consider pulling that off with just three guys and he agreed! His wife was taking pictures this time which was a big help, but Matt Jardine was not out for photos this time.

Also, before the show Al and his wife were just strolling around out front of the venue like it was nothing! Got a wave in and then let them be, then he just strolled through the bar while it was half full stopping for high-fives and hellos...he's just such a down to earth, likeable guy. Hope he comes through again next year!

I'll be in Annapolis tonight, I'd say it was about 2hrs last time with a free meet-and-greet to follow.
92  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Peeves - The small things that grinds your gears listening to The Beach Boys on: July 27, 2019, 12:44:01 PM
I've said this before and gotten flack for it, but the "guitar solo" on Don't Worry Baby … chord-chord … chord-chord … chord-chord (repeat)

The genius that is Brian Wilson had nothing else to say there? It's such a lackluster section of such a firecracker of a record.

Looking at the set, there's a few nuggets in there I've never heard ANY Beach Boy perform live...hopefully they stick around for tomorrow! Luau, Surf's Up, and Santa Ana Winds! Last year after the show I asked Al to sign my copy of "Keeping The Summer Alive" and pointed the track out to him and Matt on the back cover saying it would fit the theme of the show...next night, it was in the set and glad to see it's still there!

So did the show tonight (7/23) happen?

I saw John Fogerty in 2015 and it was even better than expected. Superb live experience. Kinda ironic that he's sharing a photo with the Lovester as I believe he has shared the bill with Creedence Clearwater Revisited and thrown work their way on many an occasion...

Isn't Brian still slated to go back out August 7th? I wonder if they're holding rehearsals/warm-ups over the next few weeks at some point since they didn't have the June dates.

I have no information, I'm sorry. I hope the tour is still on. I've got tickets for Annapolis next Sunday.

That was very rough and top heavy indeed. Mike's leads were consistently sliding off center from the pitch too.
