I know we're talking about America's summertime band, but I think this is one exception where a non-summer release could have done the record good. Autumn of '66, with "Good Vibrations" and so on from SMiLE, probably would've gone further...or maybe it would've been lost in the explosion of "Good Vibrations"?  Huh

Isn't that like saying Do It Again doesn't have a chorus, they just go dit dit dit a bit

I'd stress more the lack of a "hook" than a formal chorus section of the musical form. "Do it Again" has that hook in several variants throughout the ends of phrases "let's get back together and do it again" etc. But if you really want to get right down to it, "Do it Again" is just a slightly better "It's OK", right? The function of both tunes is to be derivative of their own past and beginnings.

It's OK is indeed, just that.  LOL

In addition to all the flaws in marketing you mentioned, the song is missing a signature Mike Love lyrical hook. There is no chorus. Just a hand full of verses, then like this pre-chorus type thing with "gotta go to it...YEAH" and then it never really goes to a chorus. The "find a ride" line from Dennis is more of a tag than anything.

It was a recipe for success, but it's missing one of the key ingredients. Just one of many missed opportunities by Mike Love.

They've added a drive-in Christmas show in CA...it popped up on Facebook today...if anyone cares. The comments were overwhelming with folks calling out Mike for his recent associations with No. 45 ...
30  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Musicianship of each of the Beach Boys? on: November 19, 2020, 09:39:01 AM
Aside from Bruce, NONE of them are versatile...and we haven't seen proof of Bruce's chops in DECADES. If you don't use it, you do indeed lose it. This is NOT like riding a bike...

However, in their "Beach Boys" idiom of music, they were all delightfully competent at what they do. Drop another group's chart in front of them or God-forbid, REAL sheet music? I'm not sure how long that would last. Brian and Carl had to have learned to read to some degree over the years, maybe Alan too.

Those vocals were rough all the way around. It was less noticeably offensive because it wasn't a soundboard recording, but it's no better or perhaps marginally at best.

It's disgusting those Utah shows even happened. I'm stunned that the DC Anthem show hasn't been cancelled yet on 12/1, just a few weeks away.

I've heard Mike Love 11 times between 2010-2018 and every time sounded as good or better than the time before EXCEPT the last time: 2018 Christmas Tour. There was noticeable deterioration from Summer of '17 prior.

What a waste.

So what did he croak out for the event?
35  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2020 Tour Thread on: October 27, 2020, 06:08:21 PM
I always got the impression that David was fairly neutral and didn't want much of anything to do with the BS. No proof on that, just my observation.

I've seen him with both Brian & Al (2013), and with Mike & Bruce (2015) and he seemed equally distant with all four guys.
36  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2020 Tour Thread on: October 25, 2020, 05:14:25 PM
Oh my Lord that is awful.

First off, it is so obvious when Stamos is on kit. What a damn mess. Got enough cymbals?

Second: vocals. Ouch. I did indeed listen all the way through, not much else to do! It wasn't until SLOOP JOHN B/WOULDN"T IT BE NICE that I found a decent lead vocal. Is it Totten? Last time I saw them (2018) Bruce was still taking the lead on this. The harmonies through the entire set are disastrous. Mike finally gets a decent lead on "California Girls". Bruce sounds drunk on "Do You Wanna Dance" like he's legit slurring. What even is that? And is that McGrath butchering Rhonda?

As their fearless leader would say .....   SAD!

How could you say hopes are dashed?

They honored their 50th in 2012, so wouldn't it make sense to honor their 60th in 2022?

No.  What would make sense is to do it before somebody (else) dies.

If they cared about the mortality of their fellow bandmates, they never would've split into fractions of a band in the first place. Clearly, that is not the case, and at least a majority of the parties involved are rather motivated by the dollar.

In this video from 8/2, the camera pans back out to the audience.

That is beyond crazy. I can't compute.

On the plus side, the band sounds tight. They hadn't played together in nearly six months. Although, Bruce sounds weaker than ever on the bridge.
40  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys trying to sack Bruce around Sunflower on: August 10, 2020, 01:53:01 PM
Bruce never had any business being a full-time member of this band. I like nearly all his songs, but they bring every record they are on to a screeching halt. In live recordings from the 60's and 70's, he sticks out like a sore thumb. By his return in the 80's and onward, he was just another guy in the big party on stage and it didn't really matter. Bruce has had the easiest job in rock and roll: clap your hands and tour non-stop. I see it as the equivalent to a paid vacation for the last 40+ years.

Even though not everyone has accepted it, the concert industry is toast for 2020. I was lucky enough to get one concert in back in February (Billy Joel at the Garden, on my birthday!) However, I had two nights with Ringo in June, reschedule to June 2021. I was to go back to the Garden next month for Billy, that's rescheduled to February 2021, and I STILL have tickets for Hall & Oates, Squeeze, & KT Turnstall on August 22nd. There has still been NO word whatsoever and according to the website, it is still on. I don't see how this is possible at all and am astonished that nothing has been said as we sit here a mere five weeks out from the date.

Oh I just LOVE it! It's been so beautiful actually hearing Brian playing the piano this year...one of the good things to come of COVID-19 I suppose! That being said, has anyone noticed that he plays almost all of his accompaniment an octave higher than "normal"? His "bass notes" are all around middle C, and his RH chords are all on the top of the treble staff. I noticed this on the Colbert videos as well.
43  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys as part of a wedding on: May 16, 2020, 07:08:28 PM
Congratulations!

We're due to be wed October 10th and our wedding party will be singing my arrangement of "God Only Knows" in the ceremony. We have a Beatles Tribute Band doing a blend of music (but Beatle heavy- sans costumes) for the reception, and there will surely be Beach Boys in there.

How has this Coronavirus Mess impacted your plans thus far? We'll be sending invitations out 'round about the time of your date and am honestly quite concerned about a second wave in the back of our minds this fall...

If anything, a lost year might invite the prospect of a bumper money-earning anniversary year more than not. So there is that....

Very true. And while I appreciate the updates on cancellations, I don't know how any venue anywhere in this country expects to hold a concert through August at the absolute earliest. Truthfully, I think the entirety of 2020 is out at this point, but I'm sure some exceptions will find their way through.
45  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2020 Tour Thread on: May 09, 2020, 11:39:46 AM
With Mike and Bruce now having commitments in 2021 ranging from April through August, and Brian & Al having the European tour. I see no way that a reunion like Al detailed could take place in 2021. Sure, 2022 is a possibility. But for 2021? Half the year is now caught up in separate commitments.
46  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2020 Tour Thread on: May 06, 2020, 08:25:29 PM
I had tickets for four events this summer.

Two Nights with Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band in June, rescheduled to June of 2021.
Billy Joel at the Garden in August, rescheduled to February of 2021.
Hall & Oates w/ Squeeze, still on for August. I can't imagine that's going to last though.

It seems pretty safe to assume that the summer concert season, if not the remainder of 2020, is shot for large gatherings which, contrary to the wishes of some, Mike and Bruce still draw.
47  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Mike Love single on: May 01, 2020, 06:24:01 PM
That was exactly what I thought it be. Unfortunately, I had to shut it off...couldn't wait for it, too, to pass.
48  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2020 Live Thread on: April 30, 2020, 08:02:18 PM
Wow. Surprised they're already calling this in April, and rescheduling an entire year off...

Anyway, how does approx. a dozen dates in early summer prohibit a reunion of 20-30 in late summer stateside, or some other time of the year? Although, it is hard to imagine it not happening in the summer...
49  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New interview with Al Jardine including some 2021 reunion talk on: April 27, 2020, 06:30:20 PM
I know Mike has said he will continue for as long as he can, and thatís fine, but I do think the stars could be aligning for some kind of closure. Bruce will be 79 next year and does he really want to be touring the same tired circuit to ever decreasing numbers? Maybe he wants out. Perhaps itís time the name is retired and Mike tours solo if he wants to. It would certainly be cheaper for him with no BRI to pay. Let any member still wanting to play (Mike, Al, Brian, even Bruce and Dave) use Ď... of the Beach Boysí in any tour publicity at no charge and be done with it. They have all earned it.
Brianís health is certainly declining (and thatís being polite) and deserves to see out his days as he sees fit. While not agreeing with a C60 concept, if they have to do it again I say market it as a ĎFarewell Brianí limited tour and let it rest.

However it plays out Iíll watch with interest from the wings but will sit this dance out.

No matter what happens, I think one thing is certain: Mike Love has every intention of taking the name "The Beach Boys" to the grave with him. He's not letting go of that touring license under any circumstances.

I'd love for this to happen. 2012 was a magical year in The Beach Boys world, regardless of how it ended. The legacy deserves it.

Just watched about a half hour because the announcer was toying with "The Beach Boys" coming up...I know these are coming from a good place for a good cause, but these performances are rough. Good Gravy. These things are supposed to be uplifting.
