I found The Beatles one to be fairly decent, and am looking forward to Sir Elton.

Honestly, The Beach Boys will never be featured at one of these because it is impossible for big name soloists to sing the songs. You need vocal groups to effectively perform 80% of the catalog and in a program that features individual "stars", the repertoire doesn't back up the formula.

I think a lot of it has to do with lyrics too. Just about any of the hits that preceed pet sounds have not aged well, lyrically. They sound incredibly dated and that's not something these programs want to be promoting. They are all over the top (democratically funded) networks and the last thing they want to do is harken back to the days of hamburger stands, woodies, and letterman sweaters...a little too MAGA for their style, I think. It probably doesn't help that Mike has his head up Trump's ass every chance he gets.

I didn't mean to make that political...but you can't talk about network television without the wires crossing.

I suspect they'll open with about 4-5 solo Christmas songs, then burn through a medley of about 4-5 early Beach Boy tunes, then the standard set from Blondie...intermission, Christmas Album replaces Pet Sounds, typical encores follow.

I personally don't understand why someone would pay to see Greatest Hits Live, when the lead singer of most hits  (Mike Love) is touring as The Beach Boys. Why would seeing Brian sing the same songs (off key/out of tune) be better? It's kinda like a tribute to Mike Love oddly enough, in my opinion. Same for the upcoming Christmas Tour: Mike sang lead on the hits. He's the original voice. It would be like me going to see Peter Tork perform Monkees hits, when Micky Dolenz is touring as The Monkees. I prefer the original vocalist!  Now, before you get mad that I'm a Mike Love fan, Brian on tour doing his Beach Boys lead vocal songs, album cuts, solo stuff, that would be cool. I like them both.

If you are a fan of The Beach Boys beyond the basic most level, it is worth your money to at least see Brian Wilson once...period. Regardless of what he is doing.

I also think (if you aren't trolling) that your terminology is a bit misconfigured. I have posted a great many criticism of Brian's voice on this forum and have caught plenty of unnecessary sh*t for it. However, he is never off key or out of tune. His voice is strained and tired, but still very musically accurate.

I also think most fans of the Beach Boys are used to seeing multiple people tackle "generic" leads. For example, I'm pretty sure every official Beach Boy (sans Bruce & David) have sang the lead on "Help Me Rhonda". So I'm not sure why that is a logical point of reason in your eyes on a Beach Boys forum. Now, if we were in an alternate universe where Led Zeppelin reunited and John Paul Jones took all of Robert Plant's leads...I could see your point.  LOL

Will have a more detailed review later, but Al and company just performed Santa Anna Winds!

Baseball summed it up...you must've been the table to the left of me! I was in front of Matt.

I'll add my interaction with Al & Matt post show with hopes of insight...Al seemed very hard of hearing, I had to repeat everything multiple times, but he was sweet as could be and Matt would repeat things for me too. I thanked both of them for doing these types of shows and said the fans indeed want to hear more deep cuts. I brought my copy of "Keeping the Summer Alive" to have signed because I love the cover art and it would give me a chance to name drop "Santa Ana Winds" I suggested that it would fit really well in the closing portion of the show when Al talks all about California and Matt actually said to Al that would be a really great idea and Al agreed. Albeit, they're surely just being nice in the moment however, it's obvious that Al has the knowledge of the back catalog. While his years are often off, he knew "At My Window" was Sunflower..."Take a Load Off" was Surf's Up etc.

It was a superb evening. I'd love to see him come around again with a deeper setlist for sure. The crowd definitely would've eaten it up.

I'll be making it to Annapolis after all tonight! SO excited. We're the center table right in front of the stage. I'll be a few feet from Al for this whole experience. Can't wait! I'll be sure to get a setlist on here if no one else does later tonight...I'll be in the Black C50 shirt if anyone would like to say hello!
236  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2018 Tour Thread on: March 22, 2018, 11:00:17 AM
I just bought cheap tickets (about half price) to go to their show tonight at the Luhrs Center in PA. I'm honestly only bothering because my girlfriend really wants to go, but based on recent shows there's not really anything too new I haven't seen. Aside from a new bass player and Christian singing God Only Knows, which i'll admit in the videos I've seen he sounds very solid on. But other than that i'm prepared for the same old meat and potatoes show, much more excited to see Al at Rams Head next week.

I wonder if they'll expand the setlist as the new / returning bandmembers get more comfortable.    When I saw them at the Lyric two years ago, it was a 43 (I think) song set.

That's correct. That show at the Lyric was probably the best I've ever seen Mike and Bruce give...still salty about "All I Wanna Do" getting cut.  LOL

I can't find many clips of those covers...but if you listen to other clips of "Stay" it is identical. Not a single inflection differs at any point in any recording.

I'm not doubting the character of Frankie Valli and in no ways comparing it to Michael E. Love.

I just have a serious problem with false advertising. He should be doing what he can, not pretending to do what he used to.

Maybe this is "beneath him" as I know many performers feel this way, but he could make a KIILING on the convention circuit...signing autographs, taking photos, maybe singing a tune here and there. That would be a better way to give back to fans that are okay with just seeing the man. But no matter who it is, I have a serious problem with lip-synching....especially denying it. If the team owned up to it, maybe I'd feel differently.

He could make a karaoke circuit gimmick out of it....sell a fancy VIP package to come and sing on stage LIKE Frankie Valli, WITH Frankie Valli  LOL

Mike and Bruce are returning to the AMT in Lancaster this August as they do at least once a year to rehash the same oldies for the same oldies. I'll pass. It is worth noting that this is the first year ticket prices have gone DOWN (a whole $10) despite the lineup increasing. I can see some gaps in the schedule in August where they could potentially come closer to the Baltimore area but it would take something really special for me to return after being verbally abused by Bruce last year, despite Mike and the entire rest of the band being excellent.
240  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New bass player with Mike & Bruce on: March 21, 2018, 01:01:01 PM
I wonder if Mike's going down Valli's route soon? Evil

Mike is already mixing in pre-recordings of his voice. It's obvious with the new "Do it Again" and "Getcha Back" recordings. I don't know what you call this. It's the same thing Cher does. She sings with herself on most songs. Albeit, Mike only does it on a handful. It's not true lip-synching because he is singing at the same time as the recording.
241  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New bass player with Mike & Bruce on: March 20, 2018, 06:44:02 PM
While I can't blame the members of Valli's backing band (though some musicians would certainly have a hard time dealing with it), Frankie Valli's live shows are borderline false advertising and legally actionable at this stage from everything I've seen. He literally appears to lip-sync his shows and apparently has been for quite some time.

I think one guy even lined up multiple Valli live performances on YouTube to prove it's the same pre-recorded lead vocal. Even without that evidence, it always sounds way too clean, and has a totally "studio" ambience to the sound.

Say what you want about any era of any BB tour, but they never resorted to lip-synching all or most of their shows.

Very true on both accounts. Valli doesn't even hide it anymore. I wouldn't pay five bucks to watch him stand on stage.

Well, if anyone knows how to polish an old man turd and pass it off for live music, it's someone from Frankie Valli's lineup!
243  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New bass player with Mike & Bruce on: March 20, 2018, 04:49:52 AM
I guess he works cheaper on bass than Randall  or BW for that matter... Roll Eyes

Do you honestly think Brian Wilson could stand up and play bass for any period of time longer than one song?

Back in the day he was just fine, but he's know bassist. He's a composer...hell, he's THE composer.

That's the standard with a couple semi-non-standards thrown in...You're SO Good To Me, Good To My Baby, and In My Room...but even those three are "regular irregular" songs.
245  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2018 Tour Thread on: March 13, 2018, 07:33:17 PM
Maybe Brian E will be back sooner rather than later so Kirsch is just filling in for him.

He left the road because him and his wife are expecting a child. I wouldn't expect him back anytime soon. Odds are Mike will be dead by the time the kid is grown...if we're being blunt...
246  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2018 Tour Thread on: March 13, 2018, 05:35:42 PM
Umm, didnít Bruce play bass live (admittedly a long time ago)? Itís not like he contributes a huge amount on keyboards...

Bruce wore a bass on stage on many occasions...and on more than one, he even plucked it a few times!

But seriously...his instrumental contributions onstage have been non-existent since the early 70's. He clearly doesn't care about it anymore. He's a damn fine pianist...it will forever be mystifying.
247  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2018 Tour Thread on: March 09, 2018, 08:44:00 PM
Going by Mike's own logic, I fail to see the reasoning behind having Christian Love, Scott Totten, and Jeffrey Foskett. UNLESS, one of them were to transition to bass...but I can't really see any of them doing that.
248  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2018 Tour Thread on: March 06, 2018, 07:47:13 PM
I would guess that Christian is just doing a handful of shows as he has since his departure. I seriously doubt he'll be on steady once summer dates pick up from June onward. I also get the feeling that Randell isn't around for long, but is less temporary than Christian, if that makes sense. Mike had no problem letting him go for a younger voice (and got a dig in at BW while he was at it) and I have no doubt he'd do it again.

Minnesota State Fair added Aug 27th and a digital download of Mike's  (whatever) is included.  This one's a tough one, I've never seen the group since Carl passed.  Thinking about going this time.  I'm getting soft in my old age.

I would say if you're thinking about it, do it.

If you haven't seen the group post-Carl, a state fair show is NOT the time to hop back in. You'll get a about 20-25 of the greatest hits that you've probably heard before surrounding by a bunch of sweaty country bumpkins claiming that Bruce Johnston is Brian Wilson and wandering when Uncle Jessie comes on. I really have nothing good to say about shows of this caliber. I'm not knocking the band. I'm knocking the circumstances of this show. If The Beach Boys were playing the Maryland State Fair, I would not buy tickets. I MIGHT park across York Rd. and roll down my windows.  LOL
250  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys 2018 Tour Thread on: February 24, 2018, 09:41:37 PM
This logic has "Beach Boys" written all over it. This is what they are all about. They are totally a brand. They determined this from the get go. It never mattered to the majority (NOT folks like the few of us), who is up on that stage.

So, I don't think there's any question this will happen, the only uncertainty is "when?" .

The other wildcard (as morbid as it is, I've discussed it here before), who passes away first. Frankly, if anyone other than Mike passes, I don't think anything will change. If Mike were to pass before the other four, I would be well beyond intrigued as to what would happen next. Would Brian, Alan, and David become Beach Boys (with Bruce)? It's hard to imagine The Beach Boys without a "front man", at least, a Beach Boys that centralize around the early surfin'/car/girl hits.

I believe a 'Beach Boys' without Mike, would cruise right along. If Brian, Al, Bruce and Dave were to start touring as The Beach Boys tomorrow because Mike was out of the picture, it would work for exactly the same reasons Mike and Bruce do. As mentioned, it's a brand at this point. People want to see the Beach Boys, and many of those people aren't hardcore fans, who are all absorbed in the machinations of lineups, band politics, etc. I guess to summarize, the very reason it works so well for Mike, is the very reason it would work so well without him.

As for a band without any of them present, going out under the name, that's where I would lose interest..but I could see it happening.

"Juice"...I have no doubt it would work. My question (if I had framed it better before) is, do we think the three Beach Boys who are currently NOT in the lineup would be interested in taking on the responsibility of the touring license if Mike were not around to do so and they all were? It would dramatically change the touring schedule for sure. I couldn't see Brian doing the number of shows or the lower-end venues that Mike has no shame in picking up along with the theatres and nicer joints.
