As heated as things sometimes get around here, it's positively tame compared to the Mike bashing I saw over on fb after his latest interview comments.

It's terrible over there...and there is absolutely no room at all to say a kind word about him on there...you get chewn to bits!
1102  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: M & B Tour 2013 on: August 17, 2013, 11:57:43 AM
Mike and Bruce surpised me on a few songs...which I really was not expecting ANY surprises this year...Summer Means Fun, Good To My Baby, Wild Honey, Goin To The Beach...this is probably the best setlist (in the states) that The Beach Boys have toured since the '93 tour.

...excluding C50 of course  LOL
1103  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: M & B Tour 2013 on: August 17, 2013, 07:25:45 AM
I think it would be more widely accepted if after throwing bouquets in the direction of John Stamos, that Mike Love would actually bring him out on stage.  But he doesn't because obviously Stamos isn't at any of these gigs where Mike Love is tossing him bouquet after bouquet.  So it takes the scenario from throwing a bouquet towards someone who you are about to introduce to the crowd and bring out on stage (which almost every performer does) to using the name of someone arguably more recognizable than you yourself to elicit a positive response from the crowd.

So yes I can see how that could irk a number (the majority?) of fans on this forum who thinks that it should be beneath a "Beach Boy" especially at this stage of their career (legendary sixties band, rock and roll hall of famers and all that) to continually use the name of a pop culture figure in order to elicit a response from the crowd.

That's not what I was referring to. I was referring to the fact that according to some posters on here Stamos is long forgotten and nobody wants to see him on stage with the group. The reaction from the crowd at this show indicates otherwise.

Yeah but here's the thing....Paul McCartney doesn't go onstage and say, "hey did you know I knew Michael Jackson?!" or "you guys are aware that I had Natalie Portman in one of my music videos, right?", while Pete Townshend doesn't announce at Who gigs, "you guys know Eddie Vedder? Well I'm friends with him!"

It just makes Mike (and The Beach Boys) look pathetic. He had to introduce "Forever" at the C50 show I saw by mentioning something about how "Uncle Jessie sang this one on Full House." Be proud of your own accomplishments Mike.

Actually, Paul McCartney uses the "My Valentine" video featuring Natalie Portman AND Johnny Depp on his screen during "My Valentine"... Wink

That really is a dump

...were you there?
1105  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So who's been to BAD and M&B this summer? on: August 09, 2013, 10:18:35 PM
A couple things that annoyed me.  Mike never mentioned Brian even once and seemed to make a point of not showing Brian in pictures on the video screen with the exception of album covers.  However, Mike did make a point to stop the show and tell the audience that his friend John Stamos will be turning 50 on the 19th and showed a couple full screen pictures of the guy.  Seriously?

It's my understanding that neither Brian nor Alan wanted their likenesses to be displayed within the context of the touring Beach Boys performances.  BRI archival footage and vintage photos of the group had been used as part of the video presentation for the first few shows of the summer tour that kicked off last month, but all of that material has since been taken down, with the exception of the Carl Wilson footage and photos used in the "God Only Knows" video.

That's interesting, because I noticed that Brian and Al were conspicuously absent from all the pictures during GOK at the show tonight.  I knew it couldn't have just been a coincidence.  Let the "Mike is trying to erase Brian and Al from the group's history lol" posts begin.  Roll Eyes

Also of note - before the gates opened at the show tonight, the band were doing their soundcheck (in plain view of everybody waiting in line) and they were rehearsing Forever, complete with Dennis vocal and pics on the screen.  They didn't perform it during the show, though. Undecided

I had the same experience with "Forever" in Baltimore on July 20th...Totten said they're working on it. But Bruce sang "God Only Knows" that night. Has it been done at an outdoor venue with M&B yet? It seems to me that they only have a screen inside.
1106  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So who's been to BAD and M&B this summer? on: August 09, 2013, 05:27:57 PM
I wouldn't like that...I don't think Dennis would like to be remembered in concert not after night by "Do You Wanna Dance".......
1107  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So who's been to BAD and M&B this summer? on: August 09, 2013, 04:06:03 PM
I can't wait till I can truly weigh in on this topic in October after seeing Brian etc.

BUT I have seen M&B once this year, and have two more shows coming in September and can at least say...they show is better than it was Pre-C50 but obviously, it is not better than last year. Still, definitely worth seeing if you have the chance!
1108  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: All things Bruce Johnston on: August 09, 2013, 04:03:31 PM
Next to Sunflower and Pet Sounds, Bruce probably praises Wild Honey the most...and he was very active on it. He played a decent share of the instruments on the title track!!! The story he tells about throwing the shitty organ solo together last minute, and on the first try Brian going IT'S PERFECT IT'S PERFECT!!! LOL
I love that organ solo. It's funky as sh*t. One of the best things he has done as a Beach Boy.

I do too!! The way I said that, it sounded more like my feelings...I meant HE described it as a shitty little organ solo! Maybe not his EXACT words... Wink
1109  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: August 09, 2013, 03:46:25 PM
Haha, I still can't decide where the best place to buy seats for the gig. Too far left, you might only see his back....and not far enough right you're liable to be blocked by the white grand. I'm trying to sit as close as I can without a crap sightline - this is a skill!

I couldn't find a very good seating chart for the Warner show but it looks like I got close to the front of the lower balcony toward the center.  It is a bit of a challenge to get a good seat at the best price.

Did you buy through Live Nation? I got to pick my exact two seats off the seating chart.

FYI

For those of you in the DC area, Tickets just went on sale for the Warner show.  I just bought 2 lower mid balcony seats (my choice of seating) for a TOTAL of $203.00.  I have the printed tickets in my hand.  There are cheaper as well as more expensive tickets available.

I just bought my orchestra seats for the same price. I'm excited! Row 23 on the Left, should be back enough that we have a good view of Brian in case of that damn piano!
1112  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BAD Tour/Setlist '13 on: August 09, 2013, 05:46:15 AM
Since I'll *hopefully* be catching the DC show this fall, I took a closer look at the setlist to see just what exactly I'll be seeing (although I'm sure Brian's set will be shorter since Jeff Beck is doing his own thing too)

Why are these guys playing so much early stuff that Mike sang lead on and M&B band carry quite well already? I think of this band as the band that has the oppourtunity to play the deep stuff and really flesh out the 66-73 period...

I counted 12 songs out of the 37 in the set that are lead by Mike on the original recordings. Look at the encore for instance...

All Summer Long
Help Me Rhonda
Barbara Ann
Surfin' USA
Fun, Fun, Fun

...what about that screams Brian Wilson? It reads like a Mike and Bruce set.

Don't get me wrong though, there are some GREAT tracks slipped in that M&B don't touch often...Please Let Me Wonder, Girl Don't Tell Me, Pet Sounds, Our Prayer/Heroes and Villains...SUMMER'S GONE!

anyone else feel this way?

I agree. They could restructure the setlist to make it suit Brian`s current voice a lot more.

Thanks for trying to focus the thread back on topic...
1113  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BAD Tour/Setlist '13 on: August 08, 2013, 08:04:37 AM
I dunno if this is normal Foskett behavior but he was really obnoxious at our show. He would drink bottles of water and toss them behind the stage where the roadies/techs were. He must have used freaking twelve different guitars, none of which were audible (it became funny when he was pretending to play along to "Pet Sounds"). He did this stupid shuffle/dance across the stage several times throughout the show and only stopped when finally the drummer laughed at attempt #5. I'm sorry, I went in open-minded but he really cemented my opinion on him.

He had a fit at the soundcheck at Merriweather last year over the changed lyrics on Isn't it Time...I couldn't hear understand what he was saying since he stepped away from the mic but he was getting red and seemed to be just short of screaming at Totten over the new sheet given to him and Brian. I can't say I'm a big fan...
1114  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What can we expect to hear and see in the Brian and Jeff Concerts? on: August 07, 2013, 08:40:16 AM
I'm thinking Surf's Up as an instrumental, it is sort of where this collaboration goes back to.
Wouldn't it be nice to witness Jeff join Brian, Al and David on stage for a masterful rendition of "Surf's Up"?  Yeah, I think so, too.  Smiley

I think you've just revealed a stunning closer to this unique concert event! Grin
1115  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian with Jeff Beck Fall Tour Dates on: August 06, 2013, 07:25:15 PM
$500 in DC for VIP with just Brian and Jeff...after paying $375 last year to meet all FIVE beach boys...there's no way I could possibly see the value in this at all.

Then don't do it.  I got third row in Detroit for $75 + $15 in fees.

I'm obviously not...and that isn't an option. The DC show seems to be one of those east coast theatre shows that they are just abusing the prices on.
1116  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BAD Tour/Setlist '13 on: August 06, 2013, 06:08:21 PM
I get the whole "casual fan" thing and sure they're in part his songs as well. But his voice is just so different...it's like hearing a different song. "All Summer Long" does not sound like "All Summer Long" when Brian sings it. Again, just my opinion...and saying he can play them "because he can" doesn't take the discussion anywhere... Roll Eyes

There are encore worthy songs already in his setlist, so I would think he could put deeper tracks in the main set, and shift some Pet Sounds material and Smile type stuff to the encore. Just my thoughts again...

The show in general is pricey-er than I expected...$150, $100, $70...I'm thinking $100 tickets at the front of the balcony, that way there won't be anyone really in front of me and I won't have the piano in my way.

Really wanna go to The Warner Theatre in DC...but I've got tickets for The Rascals reunion show that night...gonna visit the box office and see if I can switch them to another night...fingers crossed...they let me do it for Wicked last year...
1120  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When was the singing voice of each individual Beach Boy at its best? on: July 31, 2013, 08:09:37 PM

Carl: 1966-1979...Easily the greatest vocalist to ever grace the band. The range I placed was really just to represent his vocals on NEW material at the times, but there's no doubt his voice held up in a live setting until the final months. Just listen to "God Only Knows" and "Wild Honey" back to back...hard to believe it's the same person!!!

You think he was "easily" the greatest vocalist? I can understand and respect your opinion. And Carl was definitely the most versatile vocalist. I still like Brian at his prime the best.

that's cool, and I can see your point...one of many things here that just boils down to taste  Smiley
1121  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When was the singing voice of each individual Beach Boy at its best? on: July 31, 2013, 06:21:32 PM
Mike: 1961-1967...those early lead vocals are part of the beach boys signature sound, you can't ignore them. BUT, as has been said, his voice matured a bit on Pet Sounds and SMiLE...after that, I think he just tried too hard to re-create his old nasaly self and it didn't come out nice in the 70's or 80's or even the 90's really...he seems to have found a happy medium this century though.

Brian: 1963-1967...Again, can't ignore his ballad tracks and that falsetto, the other half of the signature sound...it only got better until the drugs got bigger. He never really had it again after this, in my opinion.

Dennis: 1968-1976...with Dennis' raspy voice, it took a little while to reach a mature sounding grit but eventually, it sort of "ran out"...listen to Knebworth...

Al: 1965-Present...has this man's voice after stopped? While I do believe Carl had the best voice, Al has definitely maintained his the best AND kept it entertaining to the point that he can take on lead's that other band members used to sing (Wouldn't it Be Nice, Little Deuce Coupe, etc...)

Bruce: 1965- Present...My thoughts are similar to Al's except Bruce's voice isn't as exciting BUT, I still love it!

I was talking to an older couple in Baltimore behind me about C50, and they were happy and excited to see so many younger fans etc. but they didn't know who David Marks was...but they knew everyone else!...just had to be the devil's advocate  LOL
1123  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BB's at TAGS NY on: July 28, 2013, 08:22:46 AM
Man, it's a shame that people can't even share a few pictures of a concert without other people acting like a bunch of idiots and derailing YET ANOTHER FUCKING THREAD.

Bhw, thanks for sharing the pictures. Don't mind the kids on the shortbus who have nothing better to do than hate.
Thanks for the kind words, its hard not to question the video tributes when the last Wilson isn't touring with them. Its almost like M&B are really trying to convince the average concert goers that they are the real BBs touring group at this point.

Well according to the name, they are...
1124  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BB's at TAGS NY on: July 27, 2013, 05:51:08 PM
NOBODY in this thread knows what really happened to end C50. And who said they "refused"? As it stands right now, Mike seems to be saying he wants to work with Brian again...and Al Jardine basically had that little "well Brian doesn't need YOU!" spout back.  Roll Eyes
1125  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BB's at TAGS NY on: July 27, 2013, 05:37:48 PM
I think I'm done posting here. Far too much negativity. I posted the pics because I thought folks would enjoy seeing some fresh images from a recent concert. Sorry

Glad I'm not the only one here getting fed up with the 100% lack of respect for anything Mike and Bruce are doing AND the lack of respect for members of this forum that happen to enjoy it.
