I'm just guessing the obvious...that Brain.....oops...Brian, Al and David didn't believe Mike and Bruce would be so eager to get back to their faux Beach Boys band. But we shouldn't be surprised, I mean, when was the last time these guys didn't anything intelligent on the business side of things?
Not that I think their decisions should be made on money at this stage in the game but aren't Mike and Bruce making more money touring in the stripped down version than from C50? I thought it had been said somewhere that Mike at least actually made less in 2012 then he would have doing his shows because of the high costs of that touring production, Brian's entourage, more beach boys etc. My point: isn't he actually doing something intelligent on the business side of things?

I'm sure part of what motivated this tour is a p'ing contest with Mike. Why else feature Mike type of songs? Adding Jeff Beck is another gimmick. I like both Brian/Beach Boys music and some of what Jeff Beck has done, but even if I were a huge fan of both, they don't go together. Maybe having Beck play on a track or two of a Brian album is okay, but a concert concept is forced. I remember when Brian toured with Paul Simon. Didn't Paul Simon wind up not liking Brian for that experience, or more likely, Brian's management? Oh, well. I guess exposure is everything, even though I doubt people who are fans of either men will emerge fans of both.
That part of it is just because they are hits I think. Not all of them though...has Brian ever even performed Shut Down & Little Deuce Coupe on a solo tour before?

As has probably been said many times, the concept of this tour is hard to understand.
Tickets $$$$$$$ Tickets $$$$$$$ Tickets $$$$$$$ Does anybody find it a bit odd to invite David Marks along, essentially to feature his guitar playing (although I can think of another reason), and then trump that/him by inviting Jeff Beck to share the bill. Yes, I am aware they do separate sets, but when David and Jeff Beck are on stage together, it seems a little, I don't know, like it's putting David into the background, in the shadows, wasting his talent. Come on Al, say something about that. David was the heart and soul of those early songs. How about we fire up those hot rods one more time.... I assume Brian sang lead on "I Get Around"; did he also sing the lead on "Little Deuce Coupe", and "Shut Down"? My kind of people, the car people! Al took the leads on coupe & shut down...but they sound so ridiculous with a giant band. Mike's band..."blows em out of the water" when it comes to these tracks... And I don't think David Marks is getting shoved aside. The only songs that Beck plays on that Marks recorded is Surfin' USA & Fun Fun Fun.

That does count as roughly a third of his set list.
If Al wants to keep putting it out there that they are the REAL beach boys and that their show is different and better and they dig deep...then it should be more than a third! There is no good reason for them to play Shut Down, Little Deuce Coupe, California Girls, Summertime Blues, I Get Around, Barbara Ann, Surfin' USA, Fun Fun Fun...leave it to Mike and Bruce. They do a better job on the early 60's surf rockers anyway.

Does Beck sing at all during these shows? I'm not much for guitar noodling. It's quite frustrating that two of Brian's most beautiful songs - Don't Talk and Surf's Up - are being played with THE MAN on stage and we don't even get to hear him sing lead on them.
Beck doesn't sing...at all. He's working with pretty much every classic rocker singer out there though...and now The Beach Boys are added to the list! Beck doesn't "noodle" either... I would really love to hear Brian singing those two songs though. I think it would be much cooler for this show to be one continuous thought. Essentially, lessen the numbers in Brian's band, include Al David & Jeff Beck, and just do a 3 hour show of back and forth with each other's music. Now THAT would open the floor for creativity. And don't take the band member comment too seriously...I know I was almost burned at the stake last time I suggested such an abomination...

I hope that Brian, Al and David make it over to the U.K. next year...but without Jeff Beck. Nothing against him but listening to an hour of his songs instead of an hour of Beach Boys music wouldn't appeal.
I just read in the recent rolling stone that during the five days of rehearsal the only thing Brian said to Beck was "Do you wanna check your tuning?" He said Brian just stared at the ground the whole time... I'm looking forward to Jeff Beck more than Brian at this point. He's a better musician than any of the beach boys. Better songwriter? No way Jose. But he's arguably one of the greatest guitarists alive.

Um... you listening to a different audio to me ? He's adequate, passable, but some way short of great. He's done much better, and recently. Hey man I'm trying to be positive. Compared to any other live performance he's done this year, yeah, this is great. I'd label that one bad. As almost all of Brian's "God Only Knows" performances are. It's a shame because the band is SO spot on every time. It's like listening to karaoke. Let's put this into perspective here guys. This is the best BW decided to (or could) give us earlier this year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPVOt0ceTVwOn the GOK clip, at least he's in key for most of the song. And he even pulls out a vibrato towards the end. Which I haven't heard him do in years... But since we've gone there... just have a listen to the 2002 BB Kings Show on Youtube, for everyone saying he keeps getting better.... Both clips are drastically worse from the C50 show I saw last year. "Please Let Me Wonder" sounded AMAZING. It sounded like the record, I was blown away. He really nailed "Surfer Girl" too. I really wish he would let Al Jardine sing the Mike Love vocals. Mike's voice and Brian's voice are about as distant from one another as possible. At least Al is the middle ground.

I thought they were supposed to do some Yardbirds songs? Jeff's set looks pretty short. I'd say Brian fans are getting plenty of music, though the setlist is really boring.
Jeff's songs are all about double the length of Brian's songs. Really hope the set gets more interesting honestly...going to be a good show either way.

I saw them in June in the San Jose/Saratoga CA area and they did Wild Honey, Isn't it Time, and All this is that. In Charleston at the Clay center last Sunday these songs were gone. Replaced by Summer Means Fun and Going to the Beach. And they did Darlin at the Clay center and I don't recall it from Saratoga. I actually got a set list from the Clay center from one of the crew but I don't have a setlist from the Saratoga show. And of course, the Carl footage singing GOK was added to the more recent show, not there in June. The vocals seemed to have improved over the past three months, surprising in that they shouild be getting a little hoarse after the long summer of touring. Cowsill's percussion was hot last week but when I saw them in June, he was on fire, playing a very powerful set. Actually, Mike looked and sounded better last week than any time I can recall since somewhere in the late 80's or early 90's. I had the impression that they were actually in competition with Brian and company on who could put on a stronger show. They played their asses off and really seemed to connect with the audience right up to the last second when they left the stage.
The two shows I just saw left a very competitive taste in my mouth too. We'll be able to compare soon!
