Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If the other BBs had Brian's hearing impairment
|

How would history have been different if a different BB member was deaf on one ear, instead of Brian? ]
Oddly enough David has been deaf in his right ear for a year. He had a stroke shortly after his heart attack that ruptured a blood vessel going from his brain to his ear. He jokes he always wanted to be like Brian, but not THAT way! Since losing his hearing he’s recorded his Back in the Garage CD, some tracks with Probyn and Nelson for a new solo CD, recorded a version of Cuddle Up, did session work for the new Mod Hippie album produced by Adam Marsland, has played many shows with the Surf City All Stars, a small number with Mike, and did a tour of Spain playing very loud surf instrumental music. He’s also done countless interviews & personal appearances and recently, an acting job. He misses being able to hear music in stereo terribly, some tones cause pain in his bad ear, and there is a socially awkward (or annoying) element when he can’t hear what the other person is saying conversationally. Otherwise, the impairment has not had much of an impact on his ability to play, record or perform. He even says he has an easier time staying on pitch now because he hears his own voice much clearer in his head. It’s certainly not an ideal situation for any musician, but I don’t think history would be altered too greatly if the tables had been turned.

Some cool. free music from the A-Phonics. Wonder how David found them?
The Marksmen have a following in Valencia, believe it or not, so Juan Diego Sanchis, the A-Phonics lead guitarists and promoter of the annual Surf-O-Rama festival, reached out and hired David to play with them at the surf music festival last May. It was the first time a promoter request “more Marksmen, less Beach Boys” from a set!

Thank you for the feedback. I’ll keep this in mind when it comes time to making this project public. We still have some things to consider and the tracks still need to be mastered, plus artwork, but it’s looking good for a full release. Any info on this david Marks song Anytime USA? It sounds new also like Kustom Kar Show.
The words to Anytime USA were written by David and Stevie Kalinich while driving around in LA traffic during the BB Landmark weekend - so that makes it 10 years old already. David went home (NY at the time) and wrote the music & recorded the track. Dennis Diken of the Smithereens plays drum, Jez Graham is on the organ and Alan Boyd is singing all the backing vocals. This song was sort of released on the ‘let’s pretend this didn’t happen’ album, The Circle Continues. This track is actually pretty good, thank you for the reminder. Since the new project is going up on iTunes, I will release a digital version of Anytime USA as well.

Is the track available for purchase?
That’s still up in the air right now. Any thoughts about whether there’s a preference for CD or vinyl for a release like this? EP or full album? I would appreciate any comments that might help weigh a decision one way or another. This was originally recorded with the intention of being used for European promotional purposes. But, it did come out better than we hoped (Thank you, Adam!) so if the demand is there, we might pursue releasing it.

Thanks for the plug, Adam. I love what you were able to get out of the guys. It sounds exactly like what we hoped...1963!
I think Adam covered the backstory well enough, so I'll just reiterate how hard this collection rocks - think the Surfin' USA album if David, 15 year old Carl, and Dennis produced it. In my biased opinion, this may be some of the best musical evidence the early Beach Boys influenced the birth of the punk era. I will post some samples on David's Facebook page in the not too distant future.
David (with my help) also wrote a 12k word update to the Lost Beach Boy back in September which still needs to be viciously edited but is well on its way to becoming an interesting new last chapter to Jon's book as told by David himself. In theory, the book update and the CD should both be released during the first quarter of 2016. Inshallah!
As for David's health: he was given the OK to resume business as usual as of last Friday...only two weeks from the day. It's amazing how quickly he recovered from the surgery (removal of a 99% blockage of the LAD artery - aka the widow-maker - and 3 stents inserted)...not that long ago he would've needed his chest cracked, but all he had was a small incision on his wrist.
More good news: the doctor who invented the stent is a Beach Boys fan! We met him at a private show David, Al & Dean and the All Stars played last year. In fact, that Still Touring video hijacked some of my footage (David driving the hot rod ) from that show.
To those not on Facebook who didn't get our updates, thank you so much for all the love during a scary moment! But, thank God, David beat the odds one more time and happens to have some of his best work in decades in the can to boot. There's a lot to be grateful for!

I wish that Brian and whatever powers that be had made a special effort to make sure he was present as an artist on the two songs that bill him as such on the upcoming album.
Sometimes things just don’t work out timing wise. Last Nov / Dec, David and I went on a month long trip around the world to celebrate our 15 year wedding anniversary. I believe we were in Thailand when the special was filmed.

But I do think it's interesting that he says he loves Brian, Mike and Al and calls them his friends, while there's no mention of Bruce.
The post from David was prompted by something specific that was deleted from his Facebook page this morning, along with several other unnecessarily nasty comments that didn’t involve Bruce…it wasn’t a random “name the Beach Boys you love” post where Bruce was purposely excluded. David is very much looking forward to playing with Mike AND Bruce, for the record.

Did Dave also play those licks in the solo section,
Ya know, it’s entirely possible. He did multiple takes with different effects and those parts could have been mixed in and out in any number of ways. The solo section doesn’t jump out at me as sounding overly “David” like the outro does. However, he was playing a little more inside the box on this session than he usually does and David playing a tame (for him) solo could easily slip past my ear’s radar. I wish I could say for sure.

The Marksmen CDs sold out but the tracks are all available on iTunes. I am not sure the demand is there to justify a 2nd pressing. EMI owns both the Moon & Colours but they have licensed the masters out to Cherry Red Records in the UK so the entire Moon and Colours catalog is available on CD...check amazon or cherryred.co.uk
Making up for lost time will have the Circle Continues & I Think About You Often on one disc and new material on the second disc in the form of both totally new songs and new versions of songs he's already recorded.
Thanks again!

Bgas: It was a limited run and they all sold out. But, I will sell you Svein's copy if you don't mind the fact its been posted to Norway and back. Email me.
John: Spoken Word is not everyone's cup of tea and I understand that. On the flip side, Col. Bruce Hampton, who is considered one of the founders of the modern jam band scene and a guru to bands like Phish, thinks the Benediction is the best thing released in 30 years. We don't control what moves us musically or spiritually, and to me...that is the beauty and wonder of the Beach Boys...collectively, their wide appeal reaches people who like all sorts of different genres. Its all good. To someone.
Jukka: Making up For Lost Time will be will be released in both physical format and iTunes for those who wish to pick & choose from the lot. David has been sick for a couple of weeks so it will be closer to spring before its out...but he's recorded basic tracks on about 12 or 14 songs since he's been home from the tour. Disc 1 will be previously released material from the Circle Continues and I Think ABout You Often and Disc 2 will be his new stuff.

There was a CD returned in the mail - damaged. There was no address label and no way of knowing who it belonged to other than guessing it was one of many people who ordered from Scandinavia as per the return to sender stickers. My friend here, Svien Erik, had posted a facebook message on David's fan page looking for his CD so when the package arrived damaged, I replied on Facebook to try to match the missing CD with the right person. I was very polite and apologetic about it. However, the fact he thinks the Beach Boys' wives are somehow under his employ speaks volumes to where this guy's head is at, and in hind-sight, that is exactly how he treated me...like an angry boss scolding a secretary for poor job performance.
Svein has now sought out a public message board and signed up for an account for the sole purpose of cutting and pasting from multiple private exchanges and re-assmbling them out of context in a poor attempt to paint himself as the innocent victim of my having gone "ballistic" for no reason other than my pure love of hurting puppies and being mean to loyal Beach Boys fans. Meanwhile, had this guy even been remotely polite, I would have refunded his money AND re-sent him a CD for the inconvenience. But I have no problem being the bad guy when it comes to telling someone who is grossly out of line to bugger off on David's behalf and I make no apologies for choosing to refund his money rather than be SHOUTED AT IN CAPS - especially when the answer was in his inbox the whole time!
Moving on...
Paulos: I am sorry you don't like the CD. I have heard complaints of his guitar not sounding surfy enough but I cant recall another complaint about him sounding "too surfy." I guess Murry Wilson rubbed off on him after all. I will admit, the CD is not everybody's taste as David is the type of artist who likes to experiment with all sorts of sounds...he really got off on playing cello on this CD, for example. But I appreciate that you can express your opinion in a polite manner...even if it is not all rainbows and kitties.
Anyway, the final master did not come out exactly like David's initial vision for the project so he is is sending out free MP3 versions of the CD to everyone who purchased it on his website. Expect them (or a link to them) in a week or 2 via the email address used to order the CD. Perhaps you may like his personal mixes better as they are a little more intimate...headphones in the dark kind music. If not, there are many people who didn't get copies of the CD since it was a limited pressing and I would be happy to set you up with someone who would be happy to buy it from you. We certainly don't want any reasonable people being unhappy with their purchase.
Those of you who did not get the Circle in time, or who have been turned off my some of the reviews on here...these tracks co-written with Stephen Kalinich will evetually make there was to iTunes as part of David's 2 disc compilation called Making up for Lost Time.
Lastly...thank you SloopJohnnyB! :-)

Not been around awhile but would love to read her thoughts on the last year?
Managed to catch Dave playing live myself for the first time in Melbourne and he was a hit for many others during the tour. Hope all is well and you are both enjoying some downtime.
Priceless! It was an honor to witness first hand such an important milestone in music history; I made new friends and became closer to those I'd already known; I got to see my husband shine in a way I'd only seen glimpses of before, which was exciting and filled me with pride and a certain sense of justice; and I got to see the world with my 17 year old son and have an adventure we will both always remember...what a gift to be given such quality time together at that stage of his life. I am also very grateful for all the support from you guys...it was amazing how so many people had such positive things to say about David's contribution to the tour and we both really appreciate the love. Thank you!

Not Chuck, Carrie - these tracks were cut at Capitol studio. My bad. When I was grilling David about those other sessions we were talking about earlier, he got annoyed when I asked what studio certain songs were recorded in because 'we did everything in Western 3.' Of course, the exception would be the very next topic of discussion.

It would be a very little beard - on 9/6/62, David was 13 years and 15 days old. I think the "David" in question is the engineer.
It was David Marks. He [still] does this thing with a paint brush where he bends the bristles against his chin so it looks like a beard...he was doing it that day. Nik wasn't there all that often so Chuck was probably trying to get them through it quickly "with Nik" in the control room before he split. According to David, Carl joked that Nik took the Surfin' Safari album cover photo while hanging by his ankles from a helicopter because Nik was notorious for stretching his credits. Chances are, if he did vocals on a song there would have been record of it. Besides, the vocal part sounds a lot like David and the way he pops his "B's" when he sings "Blues" And, he remembers standing at the mic with Carl when they sang it.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: David Marks Joins BBs in Grand Island Last Night

It was a total coincidence, we were driving across the country and planned to spend last Friday night around Lincoln, NE when I saw C-Man's facebook post about seeing the guys in Grand Island. Since we were driving right by there, David called Mike and we got together with him for dinner and he invited us to the show. Scott was kind enough to ask David to sit in and Christian was even kinder to loan him his amp during the car songs. It was all a rather surreal, pleasant surprise.
