51  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bruce book. on: July 31, 2015, 05:04:38 PM
From a recent interview with Bruce:

“I’m not writing a book, ever,” he says. “I’ve been offered pretty good advances to write a book. But they want to hear about Charles Manson. They want to hear about Brian’s psychologist. They want to hear about the TMZ component of it. They don’t just want to hear about the beauty of the music and the craftsmanship. I really wouldn’t have much success with the book about the music, to tell you the truth. If somebody is smart they’ll round up all of my stories about the music and they’ll put it into something, but you just have no idea how much the publisher wants you to put the jive and the junk in that has nothing to do with the music.”

C'mon Bruce reconsider! There's your title..."The Jive and the Junk". Put a pic of the 70's Bruce with the porn mustache on the cover. Let's go Bruce, while we're still young!

The Rippers throw Jessie out of the band for drinking but get Mike to do it. When doing so, Mike calls him Buckwheat.
53  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love and Mercy - News and Reviews - First clip is out. on: July 24, 2015, 09:02:34 AM
I saw the film again last night. It was playing in an old 1920's era theatre.  I think I enjoyed it even more the second time as there were a few things I hadn't picked up on the first time. One thing I thought was done brilliantly (and forgive me if it's already been discussed here) was the camera angles during the scene when Brian is looking at the SMiLE tapes and Murry comes in and tells him he just sold Sea of Tunes. Rather than showing the whole scene, many shots are half obscured by a wall or door way suggesting that the viewer is catching this pivotal scene play out by eavesdropping on these two. It's as if no one was supposed to be privy to this moment, yet here we are sneakily catching it. Great directing.

Great to see. The thread title led me to believe that half of the top 100 this week was made up of Beach Boys songs  Shocked

My problem with casino shows is that I can't even GO there, so I can't get into the Oregon show regardless... Cry

Are you referring to your age? I can't speak for all venues but I saw them at Mohegan Sun in CT and took my 14 year old son. The rule is that minors couldn't walk on the casino floor though.

Dennis was broke and homeless when he died and I'd be shocked if David Marks was worth $20 million

I think the best Murry was the one in Summer Dreams

Volume 5 of the Beach Boys Mysteries series would feature Al: "the Mystery of the Airplane Lavatory"
59  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl's Grave on: July 13, 2015, 09:03:57 AM
I've visited this cemetery with the specific reason on paying respects to Carl but as many have said there are A LOT of stars buried there and you can spend quite a bit of time there. If I recall correctly, I had a very hard time finding the place even with a GPS as it's literally sandwiched between office buildings and a neighborhood. While not a pleasant thought, with his mother and brother buried there, I wonder if Brian has plans for this to also be his final resting place as well.

and it worked this summer.  TKO Beach Boys (Mike/Bruce/Jeff et al).
The future ?  Sitting beside one Blondie Chaplin July 4 in the bar beside the Danforth Music Hall,
I bemoaned the credit taking of  their "manager/producer/publicist".
the reply:  BC: "toward the end of 2015 we (the group) have scheduled writing sessions together".

- the future is bright  (Holland 2016?)

So just to be clear, are you saying Blondie said that all of the living Beach Boys have writing sessions scheduled for the end of this year?

^Looks like some good merch, what else did they have available on this tour?
I bought an autographed NPP cd for only $25. I figured since Jeff isn't around anymore it must be Brian's signature.  Grin

Was also at the Boston show last night.  The other posters covered most of what I would have written as well. Few additional random thoughts;

-Rodriquez seems to have quite a faithful following. There were quite a bit of his fans there.
-Matt J was excellent. Haven't seen him since the early 90's.
-In my opinion, Wild Honey and Sail On Sailor were the best two #'s of the night. WH seemed longer, hotter, and better than any of the Youtube video's I've seen thus far. As someone mentioned, a big difference between Blondie doing these now than on the Beck tour. He's not a guest, he's part of the band, and you can see the difference .
-Was disappointed that they didn't do Runaway Dancer as the other 3 songs from the new record were really good. I think they had a punch in a live setting...better than the recordings.
-The two songs from Friends were fantastic. I've been going to shows for close to 30 years and it's always great to hear something you've not heard live before.
-This band really enjoys performing together and you can see it in their interaction with each other on stage.

I've been on a tour that stopped at the Laurel Way house. Ron Swallow met our bus there and told us about building the legendary sandbox. The owner stepped out of the house, wondering what all these people were doing there. Billy Hinsche, one of our guides, explained what was going on and the owner was cool about it.

I don't think it's the same house used in the movie, tho. The view of L.A. in the distance is right, but when you look at the configuration of the swimming pool on Google, it's not the same as in the movie. Different house, located nearby.

My hunch is that unless CGI was employed, the house used for the panoramic canyon view is not Laurel/Beverly Hills, but a similarly oriented hillside home in up in Bel Air. The reservoir in the movie looked a lot like Stone Canyon Reservoir. If that's the case, then current map technology should give you a pretty good idea of where that house is located in real life. Whether it was an actual location or CGI trickery, the effect worked well in the movie. (If you ever want to see the actual Laurel Way - the street itself, not Brian's old house -  in a movie (and whose life would be complete without that experience), it was used for a scene in a film called Wonderland)

Coincidently I just purchased Wonderland on iTunes to watch. I'll have to keep an eye out for that scene.  I drove up to the Laurel Way house a few years ago. You really felt like you were on top of the world up there. Spectacular views. I can only imagine what a young man in his early 20's, at the peak of his career must have felt like living there.

Interesting reaction when they bring Mike up.

I watched "Searching for Sugar Man" last night to get a better idea of what Rodriquez is all about. It's an incredible story and he seems like quite a character. Looking forward to seeing the Boston show.
68  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Great Brian article/interview in new Rolling Stone magazine. on: June 22, 2015, 04:49:45 PM
Question about Jason Fine and the forthcoming I AM BRIAN WILSON biography.  Brian recently mentioned that they 'had some guy writing it but he crapped out and now they have someone else helping him (Brian) write it', I'm paraphrasing.  Is Jason Fine still the guy writing I AM BRIAN WILSON or do we not really know?

I presume since he continues to pen articles and interview BW that means "yes".
I was thinking the same thing. The article mentions them walking in the park in the winter time so perhaps this was written several months ago.

Now THAT rocked like a motherfucker.

Yeah that really scorched. Only way that gets better is if Al breaks out his pilgrim hat. Can't wait for this show.

It's in the current issue with Rush on the cover. It's about 3 pages long. The writer tagged along with Brian to the deli, a walk in the park, his son's basketball game, etc. Believe me, there are some incredible Brianisms in this piece. lol
Ghosty, can you confirm that the cover has Rush on it? I was in a store last night and saw RS issue but it had U2 on the cover. There were people in my way and I was pressed for time so I didn't get a chance to pick it up and check and left....thanks

**Looks like that U2  cover was a commemorative issue. I found the Rush cover. Great read and pic of Brian in his pool.
BTW, it was written by Jason Fine.

The highlights (for me) from the article:

1. Brian hanging out on a park bench with the interviewer. An older woman walks by and says "Hi Brian!". He says "Hey, man!" back and then whispers to the journalist "Do you think she's foxy?"

The other day my wife asked me (rhetorically) if all I ever thought about was sex. My response was "well,  I also think about the Beach Boys and sports too"

"However, in the meantime I’m hoping to come up with a documentary that really shows my point of view."

Between the above statement and his comments on Landy, I don't even know where to begin. It's almost as if he's throwing this sh!t out there just to see this board react and sitting back watching the pages grow.
