Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Forthcoming-ish Archival Releases ?

I'm kind of hoping (counting) on an archival release similar to "Keep An Eye On Summer" in December maybe that covers 1965. Where that release covered 1964 nicely with sessions, background and isolated vocals and odds & ends of "Shut Down Vol 2" & "All Summer Long" I'm hoping this one would cover "Today" and "Summer Days". Would love to hear some more lengthy sessions for "California Girls", "Kiss Me Baby" and "Sloop John B", particularly.
Also, I was happy that KAEOS was released as a Hi-Res offering early this year, after the initial iTunes release. I wish they had done it at the same time so I didn't end up buying it twice (holding head in shame). Having the lossless tracks is great, though. For these kinds of archival releases I'm fine with no physical release, personally.

Just passing it along that there is a spectacular article in American Cinematographer (July 2015). If you are obsessed with this film, as I am, it is a must read and own. Also, there are several on set photos that I have yet to see anywhere else. Including one of Paul Dano (as 'Brian Past') in bed at the Bel-Air house circa early 1970s. Just stunning stuff.
I really appreciate the gifts that people like Robert Yeoman (the director of photography) posses. There's an art to getting a specific look and this film pulls off multiple looks for the different periods so well. He and Bill Pohlad deserve a ton of accolades of this film, I hope they are remembered next spring.

I thought the same. But it's the same week the BD/DVD comes out (September 15th). FWIW...the MAGGIE soundtrack (also from Roadside Attractions) came out on July 24th, last Friday. Two weeks removed from the BD/DVD of that title. Maybe Friday is the new Tuesday, in their world.

Sweet God in heaven...let this be true: http://www.amazon.com/Love-Mercy-Soundtrack/dp/B0123VJ88I/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1438025645&sr=8-13&keywords=love+and+mercy+soundtrackAudio CD (September 18, 2015) Label: Capitol ASIN: B0123VJ88I... Also posted this in the Love & Mercy News thread. Felt like spreading the news. I happened to be looking at other Roadside Attractions films (MAGGIE & MR. HOLMES) and notices that their soundtracks were/will be released some time following the initial theatrical push. MAGGIE came out on May 8th and the soundtrack just got released on Varese Sarabande, coincidentally the DVD/Blu-ray just came out on that title. And MR. HOLMES was just released theatrically in the last two weeks. The soundtrack for that is listed as being released August 28th, via Lakeshore Records. It doesn't make a ton of sense to me, but maybe that's what RA likes to do with soundtracks, release them closer to the home video push. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This probably means nothing ( other than that I'm looking for a puff of smoke on the horizon) but the soundtrack for the film MAGGIE was just released on July 24th. The film came out on May 8th. What do the film MAGGIE and LOVE & MERCY have to do with each other? Nothing, except that they were both released by Roadside Attractions. I guess if there's one thing to hang your hope on, regarding a soundtrack for L&M, is that at least in this one case the soundtrack was released nearly 2 & 1/2 months after the film came out. Coincidentally, the Blu-ray & DVD that MAGGIE just came out this past week too. Maybe there's still hope!

Yep, I noticed that too. It is now playing in a town (Springfield, Ohio) about 1 hour from where I live (Columbus, Ohio). The film is finally done running in Columbus it would appear, as of yesterday. This could portend that some "smaller" markets will get the film now as Roadside Attractions tries to finish the run in out of the way (non-metropolitan) areas. From what I've read on some movie sites, that's pretty common these days. Moral of the story, keep an eye out!

I saw the film again last night. It was playing in an old 1920's era theatre. I think I enjoyed it even more the second time as there were a few things I hadn't picked up on the first time. One thing I thought was done brilliantly (and forgive me if it's already been discussed here) was the camera angles during the scene when Brian is looking at the SMiLE tapes and Murry comes in and tells him he just sold Sea of Tunes. Rather than showing the whole scene, many shots are half obscured by a wall or door way suggesting that the viewer is catching this pivotal scene play out by eavesdropping on these two. It's as if no one was supposed to be privy to this moment, yet here we are sneakily catching it. Great directing.
That sounds like an awesome experience, at the vintage theater. Very astute call about how DP Robert Yeoman and Director Bill Pohlad handled many of those in studio scenes. The "Here Today" scene has that same 'fly on the wall' feel.

That is some terrible artwork. But the L&M blu-ray cover art isn't that far off. For instance the title lettering is cut off by the "horizon line" of the ocean, Cusack and Dano got almost equal amount of screen time yet Cusack looks like he has the main role in this film. If I squint the current artwork looks like it could be the cover of Blue Crush or any other hollywood surf film...which assuredly this film pretty much has nothing to do with the beach or surfing.
edit: and I know it's about catching the eye of shoppers in Best Buy - but they may get some rather disappointed viewers who were expecting a more vibrant film on The Beach Boys.
Something along the lines of this would be so much more appealing - and truer to the vision of the film (dark, foreboding):
Agree, on one of the boards I wrote that I thought they should use an altered version of the US one-sheet. Or at the very worst, the UK one-sheet, if they needed to deviate from the US poster. The German Blu-ray cover art takes its visual cues from the US poster:

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Q&A: Mike Love's Half-Century With The Beach Boys
|
on: July 23, 2015, 08:13:25 PM
|
http://www.courant.com/hartford-magazine/features/hc-mike-love-beach-boys-interview-20150725-story.htmlIt's summertime and nothing gets you in the mood faster than a dose of the old-school California rock from The Beach Boys. The group, which originally included brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, along with their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, gained quick popularity in the 1960s for its vocal harmonies and lyrics focusing on cars, romance and the beach. Some of their best-known songs, along with the vibes of summer, will be all featured Aug. 12 when The Beach Boys bring their best to a summer night at Simsbury Meadows. Love now heads the band that will perform with The Hartford Symphony Orchestra as part of its Summer Concerts Series. Love looks back on decades of top-of-the-chart hits as he Spilled the Beans with Java.
Q: You have been touring for more than 50 years now, singing songs like "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "I Get Around," classics that have sustained for decades. Do you ever get up in the morning, look in the mirror and say to yourself, 'I cannot sing these songs one more time'!?
A: I never do that! We continue to perform because people still enjoy those songs we created so many decades ago. They are songs with fond memories for people of all demographics and generations, from children to senior citizens and everyone in between. It is a blessing. Singing was a family tradition for us before we formed the Beach Boys. I can never think of not doing music. It would be like throwing out something from my life. Our music has brought wonderful experiences to people and gotten others through some tough times. Performing our songs is a wonderful experience for me.
Q: What does "old" music have that makes people want it forever?
A: I think as far as the music from the '60s, the sustained success in terms of the pure songs was in the development. Not just the Beach Boys, but Motown and the Beatles. [It is] the most performed music on oldies or classic hits radio station. I think these days the musical landscape is so fragmented. You have rap over here, hip-hop over there, Adele or someone like that over there. I think the value in the classic songs that sustain are in the lyrics and the melodies, great songs done by great singers.
Q: Pretty much anyone who has heard of the Beach Boys knows the group has had its ups and downs and is aware of the split between you and Brian Wilson years ago. You reunited with Wilson for the 50th anniversary tour and then went your separate ways again. And now there is the new movie about him, "Love and Mercy." What caused the estrangement? And do you think the fence can ever be permanently mended?
A: Brian did himself a lot of damage and that was a horrible thing for me to witness as the years went by. When we started out he was doing great music but then got into drugs and that didn't do him any favors. All I can say is that love transcends all the bull because we are family and grew up together. We went to high school football games together, loved the Everly Brothers together, and sang doo-wop before the band was formed. We wrote all the great songs together and were successful together. As far as performing with Brian again, I have nothing but love for that cousin of mine and would love to get into the studio with him again.
Q: You have your own book coming out called "Good Vibrations: My Life As A Beach Boy." Can you tell me something about that?
A: It's written mainly from my point of view, my life, the Beach Boys. Like you said, I am 74 and there have been a lot of things that have gone on in my life and if I included everything it would read like "War and Peace." The book's not finished yet, but it is not an attempt to counteract some of the stories there have been out there over the years but rather to tell it from the point of view of someone who was really there.
Q: What can Connecticut expect when you set up in Simsbury?
A: It will be fantastic, not only because of our music but because we are performing with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.
Q: What are your favorite Beach Boy songs?
A: "California Girls," because it is so symphonic, "God Only Knows," because it is just a gorgeous song and "The Warmth of the Sun." We wrote that song in the early morning hours on the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated. I think when we recorded it, it became even more poignant. I'd have to add "Good Vibrations" and "Kokomo" as favorites also.
Q: What else are you working on now?
A: We have been performing overseas and did sold-out shows in England at the Royal Albert Hall in London. We've also been invited to Germany to perform in December. That has all been fabulous. We are doing 165 shows a year. I'm working on a new album, music that was done 30 years ago but never recorded.
Q: There are tales that you have a great hot tub in your backyard that overlooks Lake Tahoe. What do you listen to when you are out there?
A: Actually I was in there this morning but I didn't have any music on other than the music in my head.
Q: What is something most people don't know about you?
A: I graduated among the lowest in my high school class of 150 students, along with my friends on the track team. My saving grace was that I scored well on something back then called the Iowa Tests. I was very well-read.

And when Banks confronts Landy who was ranting and raving outside the office door, all full of insults and bravado and his pseudo-machismo testosterone-fueled bullying trip...it was *that* scene that I think generated one of the bigger audience reactions both at the shows I saw and from other reports from viewers. Banks strikes the perfect pose and shoots the perfect look at the doctor as she swings open the door. It's not overblown, it's not overacted, it's not getting into "Mommie Dearest" territory...
Rather, it's the perfect, even understated to a degree, facial and body expression of the words "Checkmate, you asshole."
Of course Melinda (Banks) could do that - she had just heard her nemesis (Landy) get served! Talk about perfect timing and cause & effect.
In the end credits of L&M I saw something go by called 'FUN, FUN, FUN Dance Sequence', followed by some names. WHAT (F,F,F) dance sequence? Probably part of the Beach Boys early years montage during the opening credits. That's correct, about 30 seconds of a recreation of The T.A.M.I. Show concludes the opening montage. Off topic, a nice one on one interview with Elizabeth Banks I just found on YouTube, posted a couple of days ago. I can think of worst things than staring at EB for 13+ minutes... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhKOH-hEGTo

a homemade soundtrack may suffice if the alternate fails to exist
It will have to suffice. The good thing is with BD, there will be a DTS HD Master (Lossless) of the audio track as an option. And, as I wrote in the Blu-ray thread... " With LOVE & MERCY, if no soundtrack is released, my plan is to take the BD and use DVD Audio Extractor on my Mac Book to rip the 24/48 audio. That way, at least I can have in tact tracks of some of Atticus Ross' score. Specifically, "Black Hole", "Headphones", and "Deep End". The other parts of the score have dialog interspersed so those wouldn't be ideal. All the more reason for the score to be released, in tact, separately.
I think there's only like 15-20 minutes of actual score truthfully, maybe a little more, but not much. In that case, a Hi-Rez download might be ideal over a physical release, unless they choose to flesh out a "soundtrack" with tracks. Or, as I have mentioned elsewhere, ideally, there would be an "Isolated Score Track" included on the DVD/BD. If that were the case, I would be able to use the DAE tool I mentioned to extract the isolated tracks in 24/48 for my own personal enjoyment."

Not lobbing a grenade at all but didn't Mike hold up the release of "The Pet Sounds Sessions" in 1996 over objections about the accompanying booklet(s)? In fact, it wasn't released until 1997, over a year after the original release date.
I don't think Mike has anything to do with the lack of "Love & Mercy" having a soundtrack release yet. I really think it comes down to viably putting together a packaged soundtrack with the Atticus Ross score. There's only some 15-20 minutes worth of actual score in the film. Some of the music is the actual studio musicians in the film, some of it is sourced from the PSS box set and of course the truncated versions of early hits used over the opening montage. Aside from that, there is non-Beach Boys music used in the film and perhaps that's a hold up. Maybe the desire is to include all music, songs like "Nowhere To Run" by MR & Vandellas or "These Dreams" by Heart.
But I'm just guessing about that.
