3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Love & Mercy Screenplay & Production Notes on: September 01, 2022, 05:39:45 PM
Might seem like an odd request but I'm hoping someone on the board has these. Back before "Love & Mercy" came out in 2015, someone on the board was nice enough to share the screenplay (pdf) with me and also put me on the scent of the production notes (also, pdf). Of course, I had them saved on an SD card that I can no longer find.

Hoping someone on the board might have these and be willing to share? My email is listed in my profile.

Thanks in advance...

4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2022 Tour Thread (Plus Archived 2021) on: August 05, 2022, 09:47:20 AM
I would like to think we're all, or mostly all, adults here. We have two eyeballs, two ears and a brain. And if you are here you likely care about the music of The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson.

It's not projection or libel to ponder that Brian looks at best disinterested and at worst... I don't know... to be on stage these days. To think that or type it isn't born out of some bizarre "hatred" or "jealousy" for the man.

In fact, it's quite the opposite. To love some one, truly, you have to be honest. Wanting someone to be something they can no longer be is not fair to them or you. It's, frankly, delusional.

Maybe Brian still enjoys being with the guys and going out on all these dates, I don't know. I don't know Brian Wilson. His overall comportment would suggest otherwise, however.

But, what do I know...

What you’re saying is not the problem; it’s the people saying that  there are nefarious reasons behind Brian being “forced” to tour…and worse. I apologize for being vague but some of the things I’ve read on Reddit and especially Facebook would rank down there with the very worst things I’ve ever read on the internet.

This comment on Reddit made quite a lot of sense to me:
'So...the implication is that he isn't retiring, but they seem to be acknowledging that he is currently in no state to perform (as seen on his current tour with Chicago).
For his 2021 tour, Brian sounded better than he had in years. The time off during the pandemic seemed to have rejuvenated him. Then he gets a break before starting his tour with Chicago and yet right from the first show it was clear he was in no state to perform. ...What happened health wise between the end of his 2021 tour and the start of the tour with Chicago? Is it physical health, or mental health? Is he recovering from Covid or something? We may never know.'

This is only my theory, and it's just that... it's likely a lot less nefarious than some might think. I remember David Leaf once saying that Brian had 'turned the other cheek so many times he's got whiplash'.

I wonder if, maybe, Brian knows the shows mean a lot to everyone and he just kind of rolls with it. Not the's being forced to, but that instead of saying "I'm done guys", he's just kind of...rolls with it.

Maybe him ceasing touring right now is Al, Blondie, Carnie, Wendy (whoever) saying "Brian", "Dad", take a break.

6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / A&E Biography: Brian Wilson – A Beach Boy's Tale [VHS] on: July 02, 2022, 06:51:43 PM
I'm looking to find a copy of this VHS – have been for years. I remember watching it when it was originally broadcast in 1999 and have found digitized copies on YouTube but the quality is less than desirable.

I recently purchased a fairly decent S-VHS / DVD deck with the ability to dub VHS ➦DVD. I would like to acquire this VHS and digitize it myself. Does anyone here have a copy they would like to sell; or even let me borrow for this purpose?

I've been waiting for awhile for one to turn up on the used market and have essentially given up. If you have one you want to lend (or sell!!) I'm interested.

The highlight for me so far is Do You Like Worms, that was a surprise that I didn't expect, but the separation of the tracks really gives it a cool new listening experience.

I agree with this, it caught me off guard in a great way. It kind of reminded me of the 'fake stereo' from the Good Vibrations box set of the same track. Or, at least that's my memory of it.

But so much better and 'proper' stereo mix. I wouldn't mind hearing a fully remixed "2011 Smile" album in stereo. I think it might reveal some nuances hitherto unheard.

YES.

This new Worms mix really brought a lot of sonic color to the mix, which just doesn't exist in the mono (to my ears). I love my TSS set, but I wouldn't mind getting a remixed stereo version in the future.

Same. I'm a mono purist but I don't mind remixes for fun and analytical listening.

I love that Kate is getting attention, it's well deserved. She has one of the sweetest voices in pop history and it's great that a whole new generation is discovering her music. Hopefully they'll listen to all of "House of Love", "The Sensual World" and "The Red Shoes".

Funny thing, I remember hearing both "Getcha Back" and "Running Up That Hill" at the skating rink regularly when I was 10/11. Smiley

It's currently a 1986 world and we're all just living in it.
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Made In California (Disc 3) Repress on: June 18, 2022, 01:41:29 AM
Is the track listing different?

No. Same track listing. Disc 3 has an 'indexing' issue that causes tracks to start 1-2 seconds late and in some cases, a previous track will bleed over into another track. More of a nuisance than anything.

It's impossible to come by a corrected version that was sent out by UMG back in 2013 so I was hoping someone here has a copy they could rip and share.

Not "California Dreamin'" but another relic of that same time.

"Getcha Back" video from 1985. My first favorite Beach Boys song... Smiley

It's weird to me to see the 80's nostalgia happening right now. In 1986 I was 10 y/o and saw my first concert (The Beach Boys at Mud Island, Memphis, TN). IIRC, "The Beach Boys" album had come out the year before and the "Made In U.S.A." compilation had just been released to support that years tour, including the "California Dreamin'" cover.

Now I have 13 year old daughters who are into this show (and others) and it's a little bizarre to hear nostalgia discussions about an era I was coming of age in.

14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sounds of Summer 6LP Announced on: June 18, 2022, 12:12:57 AM
Listening via Apple Music (lossless)...I like some of the mixes. The Dolby Atmos presentation I can take or leave. I forgot how much I like "Getcha Back" and "Good Timin'".

I like the new mixes fine, Mark Linett always does a fine job with the re-mixes (mostly). I'm a bit of a traditionalist though. If it was originally released in mono, that's kind of how I like to hear it. Modern remixes are "fun" and occasionally revelatory but that's it.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road (2019 Brent Wilson Documentary) on: June 17, 2022, 11:56:01 PM
I was fortunate to see "Long Promised Road" at my local art house last winter and I did enjoy it. I did have some minor quibbles with it that have all pretty much been covered ad nauseam.

My major criticism is that it occasionally too hagiographic. I found myself comparing it to the emotional beats of 'I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" and by comparison, "Long Promised Road" suffered, for me.

When IJWMFTT was released in 1995, it aired for a short time on the Disney Channel of all places and that's where I first encountered it. It had quite a profound affect on my assessment of The Beach Boys music as a whole. I would point to it alone as having turned me into a BW fanatic.

IJWMFTT doesn't shy away from painting BW as a flawed man, father and husband. That makes him human. And, in my mind, that's where LPR fails. Still, it's a lovingly crafted documentary that deserves to be seen.

Does anyone here happen to have a copy of the re-press of Disc 3? I would like to have a lossless copy (Flac, AIFF, whatever) of this.

My copy of the box set of course has the mis-indexed Disc 3.

Please send me a PM and I'll provide my info if anyone wouldn't mind sharing a digital copy of it.

Thanks

Apologies for the late bump on this but I didn't want to start a whole new thread. Looking hook up with anyone who purchased this box set via iTunes or any other digital online store.

There was a 'Digital Booklet' offered with purchase. I have the physical box itself but simply cannot justify purchasing the box digitally when a) I don't need it b) not just for a pdf.

In 2011 I did get a digital copy of the 2CD Smile Sessions that had a 'Digital Booklet' also, got it from HD Tracks, actually. I would be willing to 'trade' if anyone is interested?

Thanks in advance.

I would assume the "digital booklet" is just a pdf of the book included in the physical set.

You would be correct!

21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smile, Red Letter Media and the new Bill & Ted film on: August 31, 2020, 08:29:04 PM
Red Letter Media are an ensemble of online movie critics who gained YouTube fame with their "Mr Plinkett" deconstructions of the Star Wars prequels. Here they review the new Bill and Ted movie, which I haven't seen, but which relates the now middle-aged characters in their still unrealised quest to create the perfect piece of music that will align the planets and bring peace to the world, as foretold for them in the earlier movies from the 1990s. It appears the film's representation of this draws upon the mythology of Brian Wilson and Smile (a bit like Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story), at least to the extent that Keanu Reeves is shown playing a theremin. Certainly the implication is noted by one of the two reviewers, who conveys his understanding of Brian's career in 1966-67 to his sidekick, who is not familiar with the subject. Sadly the review does not feature the most talented of the RLM-ers, Mike Stoklasa.

Very cool, I'll go watch this right away. I love their whimsical reviews.

Here's a cool interview with Mark Linett from February, 2020: https://youtu.be/prFdy74TyuA?t=9344 – full interview goes for almost 80 minutes.

At this point, he discusses recently mixing the "San Miguel" backing track: https://youtu.be/prFdy74TyuA?t=9685. The discussion also goes in depth about his work with BW and his experience filming LOVE & MERCY, etc.

I love detailed interviews such as this... I consider it a privilege to listen to someone as talented as Mr. Linett talk shop.
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love & Mercy: At Five Years on: August 02, 2020, 05:07:54 PM
Jason, I'm not sure if you have compiled all of those pictures and information together before here (on the unidentified scenes) but you are AWESOME for doing that here. I had never seen those screenshots and it really makes me want a special directors cut.

You're most welcome, I had fun doing it.

I freaking love the Thin Red Line and The Tree Of Life is one of my favorite movies ever. I heard that Malick spent decades compiling magazine clippings, ideas, photographs, probably poetry/literature into a binder that was meant to capture all of his ideas for the Tree Of Life. I would absolutely love to see that "binder" be turned into a book so fans of the movie could see all of his ideas for the film.

I was so psyched when I heard that Malick's cinematographer for The Tree Of Life (I believe) was snagged for Love and Mercy.

TTRL remains one of my favorite movies, even 22 years after its release. I remember the lead up to coming out (the return of Terry Malick, etc). That was during the infancy of the World Wide Web so there was scant information there. But in print, there were excellent long form articles in Variety and Esquire about the production, etc. I read those over and over. TTRL is second to L&M in times I've seen a movie in a theater (5 for TTRL, 14 for L&M).

Bill Pohlad being attached to L&M really intrigued me when I heard that. Because I knew his name as the producer of "Brokeback Mountain", "The Tree of Life", "Into the Wild" and "12 Years a Slave". I was a little nervous because he had only directed one feature but he came through on this project, on all counts.

The DP for L&M was Robert Yeoman who was mostly known (to me) for his work with Wes Anderson; "Bottle Rocket", "Rushmore", "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "The Darjeeling Limited", among others. Yeoman also was the DP for the excellent Gus Van Sant film "Drugstore Cowboy". So, I figured the film would have a wonderful aesthetic quality, which it most certainly does.

I know what you're saying. As with all art, it's subjective. It either works for you or it doesn't. I think I'm less interested in watching 2 hours worth of someone doing an impression of someone living (or dead) than I am a film trying to capture the subject's essence.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love & Mercy: At Five Years on: August 01, 2020, 01:55:50 PM
Because it's been on various streaming service (Amazon prime etc), I've watched the film multiple times, and it's truly a dream film for fans of BW's work.  If, before this film, you'd asked a typical hardcore fan which period of BW's output he'd like to see reeanacted on film, the Pet Sounds/Good Vibrations/Smile era would likely have been the answer.  And then to see it depicted with such authenticity and attention to minute detail is incredible.  Dialogue is lifted from the actual session tapes.  Recording sessions are reenacted practically note-for-note.  Costumes are near-duplicates of what Brian and the studio musicians actually wore.  Western 3 is recreated in all its glory. The piano/sandbox/Banana & Louie/the Inside Pop Surf's Up etc etc ad infinitum.  For the core fan, it obviously doesn't get much better than this.

But does it work as film for a larger audience?  Does it speak to non-fans who don't give a crap whether Paul Dano is wearing a competition-stripe surfer shirt exactly like the one that Brian wore to Heroes & Villiains tracking session #12 ?

I think that it does.  Let me share the story about watching the DVD of the film with a non-fan, namely my late father.   During the last years of my father's life, when he suffering some pretty major health problems, I kept him company quite a bit and we often watched movies from Netflix.  Shortly after the DVD became available on NFLX, I added it to the queue.  Now, by way of background, my father was of an older generation than the Beach Boys, approximately 15 years older than Brian Wilson.  My father was a talented singer in his youth and sang with an accomplished boys choir. As such, he was aware of and appreciative of the Beach Boys' singing prowess and sheer musicality, but he was not a fan per se.  He never owned a Beach Boys record or attended a BB concert in his life.   So what did my dad, as about as objective of a viewer as you could possibly find, think of Love & Mercy? I'll tell you, he really enjoyed the film!  He was fascinated by the 1966-67 studio scenes and insight into Brian's creative process during that peak period, but he was also quite taken by the Landy-era story.

Agree on all counts! I'm sorry to hear about your father's passing, my sympathies.

You hit upon one of the biggest charms of the film is that it is "heady" enough to play in an art-house but "accessible enough for the multiplex. I enjoyed screenings in both settings during the theatrical run, with obviously rather different types of audiences. In both environments I observed people staying during the credits, even after the "SUPERTITLE's" at the end and even after Brian's "Love & Mercy" performance.
