1  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Re: I Just Wasn't 8 Bit on: October 15, 2014, 08:42:15 PM
Awesome!

I'm assuming this is tracked -- what's your tracker of choice? I've yet to find one with an interface I can really jive with, but without the complexity of something like Renoise.

Are the drums sampled or synthesized by whatever tracker you're using?
2  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: has anyone made a map of smiley smile members? on: August 16, 2014, 06:02:43 PM
Nah, don't do it as a PDF. Host it as an OpenStreetMap (or even use the Google Maps API, I don't care that much) and allow users to place pins.

This thread would do well in the sandbox at this point.

It's also really hard to tell just *how* depressed you are when you're depressed.
This doesn't make any sense to me. If you are in great discomfort but you can't tell you are in great discomfort then you're not in great discomfort.

I'm gonna be blunt and say that it doesn't make sense because you haven't been in that position. It warps your thinking so badly, it's not until you're in treatment and everything else where you look back and go "oh, sh*t."

It's also really hard to tell just *how* depressed you are when you're depressed. It warps your thinking to the point where you can be at your lowest point ever and think things are "normal." Hell, I've been in that position before and refused to believe the doctor that it was "severe" depression.

This article is worth a read by anybody, too: http://www.theguardian.com/science/brain-flapping/2014/aug/12/robin-williams-suicide-and-depression-are-not-selfish
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do you prefer to listen to the Beach Boys in mono or stereo? on: July 07, 2014, 01:29:08 AM
Oh man, varies wildly from song to song.

I seem to be the only person on this board who liked the first PLMW stereo mix, I don't care for the one one the 2012 Today!

Fun, Fun, Fun in stereo is just wimpy compared to mono.

Stereo California Girls is so, so, so good.

It may be blasphemous, but I prefer stereo Pet Sounds.

It's really kind of up in the air. I tend to prefer stereo, but not always.

7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do It Again- new version question on: July 05, 2014, 01:01:04 AM
TBH I have no qualms about pirating music from huge groups like The Beach Boys or the like, or software from huge companies from Adobe and the like.

It's the smaller artists / developers that really need the income.

Also, the "downloads kill the music industry!" argument is stale. It's not. Sharing tapes with your friends didn't kill the industry either.

Online piracy is the 21st century equivalent of making tapes for people.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds Numbers on: June 13, 2014, 10:45:52 PM
Carried over from the insignificant questions thread:

So, this is an obscure question for the knowledgeable collectors out there...

I received that sealed Pet Sounds I had mentioned earlier as a gift and I've been inspecting it to make sure it's actually what it's claimed to be. While looking over it and comparing it to the open, original press of Pet Sounds I own, I noticed there's a small number on the bottom back right. On my open version, there's a "3", and on my sealed version, there's a "6". Other than that, they both seem to be the same in every other regard.

Does anyone know what these numbers represent? What numbers do you have and on what versions?

(Pictures forthcoming)

IIRC this has something to do with where it was pressed. Don't hold me to it, but I think I heard that when I was searching for a butcher cover.

10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson album update in Rolling Stone on: June 09, 2014, 09:50:18 PM
If the songs are good I don't care if Brian is singing a duet with Charles Manson. "A Friend Like You" sucked not because Paul's voice didn't blend with Brian's, it sucked beacause it was a forgettable dittie. If Paul had guested in "Midnight's Another Day" they would have sounded good together.

Of course, the concept of good songs is very subjective.

Dude, I'd love to hear Brian collab with Manson!

Old thread, but Celebrate the News. Sheesh.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson album update in Rolling Stone on: June 09, 2014, 02:17:34 PM
I just hate the production on TWGMTR all around. Plasticky.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson album update in Rolling Stone on: June 09, 2014, 01:26:39 PM
Heh, I remember complaining a lot about the sound of TWGMTR when it came out and cadres of users of this board saying it wasn't that bad and that I didn't know what I was saying.

Good to see that the disappearance of the shiny new sheen has killed that notion.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson album update in Rolling Stone on: June 08, 2014, 02:04:29 PM
sh*t, I know a girl who adores Lana Del Rey and The Beach Boys...this will be exciting for her.

BRB, gonna start listening to LDR.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / Smile Sessions Box Set (2011) / Re: TSS - All things Good Vibrations on: June 08, 2014, 01:49:44 PM
I've totally heard that session before. Isn't it on TSS?
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Once and For All on: June 08, 2014, 11:38:31 AM
I *always* heard it as Brian on the bah-bah-bahs or whatever the hell you guys are calling it.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BB band members' interpersonal relationships w/ each other on: June 05, 2014, 09:21:34 PM
Well, when Bruce had his heart bypass back in 2004, Brian phoned him, personally.

I'd kinda think that would be expected no matter what your relationship, I mean, heart bypass, holy sh*t.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: June 04, 2014, 07:21:11 PM
This was before Landy's gross over-medication kicked in: there's footage from his autobiography promo tour, fall 1991, that would make you weep (in fact, it formed part of the smoking gun evidence that eventually freed him from Landy's control). You also have to factor in that this was shot some 28 years ago.

Yeah, isn't the Barbara Walters interview from that era as well? He's all over the place in that one.

And yeah, I think this video is really damning proof of the over-medication as you stated, but also of the fact that Brian is a 71-year old nowadays.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brother Re-Issues: Proposed Bonus Tracks on: June 03, 2014, 07:29:21 PM
Thank you for the information, Klay. There is a vocals only mix of "Let Us Go On This Way" somewhere (maybe on All This Is That?) and a piano demo of "Airplane" so really it is possible to make an alternate album of Love You.

Oh man though, the drums and synth make Let Us Go On This Way.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: June 02, 2014, 11:29:13 PM
Anybody have more info on this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG9luwmrOAk

It's Brian Wilson live in 1986, and he seems to be all there, and his speech isn't slurred at all, really with it. He forgets the lyrics at one point to Surfer Girl, and gives a shoutout to Landy.

I've never seen it before, and it's really wild to watch.
21  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Favourite Member Of The Band on: May 29, 2014, 04:24:54 PM
I don't really have a favorite member (unless Helm is to be believed and Robbie is a total ass in which case screw him) but I've been listening to "The Weight" for literally days on endless repeat and I just cannot stop. It is SUCH A GOOD SONG. Obscenely good.

Also climbs the hills like a mattress was climbs a hill like a matchless

Which, itself, is a misheard vocal.

Smoking is stupid and deadly, but I'm not here to preach.

It's funny, ever since I was little I always loved the smell of tobacco smoke (and no, nobody close to me smoked), even though everybody else always called it nasty and everything else.

The taste is great IMO, the breath is a different story. And, at the right times, a nicotine buzz can be fun.

I wouldn't call myself a smoker, but I can see the appeal.

Yeah, I'm going outside in about an hour.
