Saw the show in Hollywood, FL last night. Good gig all-around but I did end up feeling a bit let down by the short set and lack of Funky Pretty, Honkin', and WTW/ASMTYD; Darian and Billy were missed as well. Having avoided looking at any setlists until now, I was geared up for a healthy portion of hits and deep cuts during the first set, and ready to dive into Pet Sounds after the intermission. So, I was pretty surprised and a bit confused when Blondie did his thing and Brian goes "Now we're gonna do Wouldn't it be Nice" after just 12 songs. This was my third time seeing Brian (saw him at C50 and with Jeff Beck), and this was definitely the most talkative/animated I've seen him between songs; he also sounded pretty good on the non-PS songs. He definitely seems a tad bored of playing Pet Sounds by now though, with Matt covering a good chunk of his lines (which I didn't mind, he is truly a gifted singer), and rushing through verses in that odd new "talking" Dylan/Nelson-esque style of his that made it a bit difficult to really get into the lyrics. The stage setup was gorgeous, as was the sound and the lighting, and hearing those wacky instrumental passages in HT, IWFTD, LGAFAW and PS fill the room was something else. Really nice hearing Wild Honey, California, and SLC too. Encore was the typical dealio, though Love & Mercy was a nice ending.

This will likely be my last time seeing the big guy unless he does a Smile tour at some point. Even though I've come to expect stuff like this from Brian, I could not believe how fast Brian vanished from the stage after his last line on Caroline, even as the band kept playing. I'm so glad the man is still playing out, not to mention eternally grateful that I got to see him more than once, but I really feel this needs to be his last tour of this scale. This kind of heavy tour schedule and constant traveling can't be too good for him. Either way, very happy I was able to see at least one live Pet Sounds performance.

I have wondered how things would've been with the band as a three piece, with Brian on bass, Carl handling all guitar duties and Denny on drums. I figure Denny could've handled a lot of the Love-type leads in the early days. But hey, I'm forever grateful for Mike and Al's contributions, despite any creative disputes or setbacks. The group was what it was, and here we are 50 years later with numerous posts on a message board dedicated them... they did their thang.

I've seen a decent amount of great gigs for a 21 year old. I've missed about as many too.  

1. Mike Watt & The Missingmen doing the hyphenated-man album in a small Orlando club, 2011.
2. Paul McCartney at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami, 2010.
3. The Beach Boys C50 in Hollywood, FL, 2012.
4. Bootsy Collins & The Funk Unity Band, followed by The Roots at Bear Creek Festival, 2013.
5. Arcade Fire, "secret" intimate show billed as The Reflektors at the Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami, 2013.

Honorable mentions to Primus 3D last year, Man or Astroman the same year, and Slayer in 2007.

Wonder why they didn't make the whole Beck tour include Pet Sounds... makes the other gigs seem insignificant. I'm sure they could've brought in a lot more ticket sales had they incorporated it into every show. Anyway, I'm just jealous as a jellyfish, have fun LA folks!

Bloody hell. Pet Sounds in its entirety and Blondie on Wild Honey? The envy in my soul is boiling right now, freakin' A this makes opening night seem like a quick soundcheck. Happy for the folks who got to see this one, must have been one hell of a surprise.

So they dropped the car songs and no "Darlin'"??  Whatsis world coming to?

Wish they would've done that from the get go, first setlist of opening night was practically more M&B than the recent M&B shows themselves! Still a great show.

Jeff is singing WIBN, or at least he did on opening night. I was a little miffed by that, although he did it well it really is Al's song when it comes to live performances. Also, am I the only one who believes David's vocals are criminally underused on this tour (and C50 as a matter of fact)? He's got such a cool, Dennis-esque California voice that would sound great on tunes like Shut Down, Surfin' USA, Don't Back Down and the like... hell I'd bet he could even pull off a more convincing SoS than Brian for the Blondie-less shows. It's a shame he's only relegated to one lead vocal on each gig.

So anyone want to comment on how Blondie sounded during SOS?

He sounded fantastic. He's a got a much deeper sounding voice these days that served the tune well, and he sang it with conviction. He also added a killer solo at the end on his gold Les Paul. I can see why longtime fans rave about those early '70s shows with him and Ricky, he's got a hell of a presence onstage. He showed up again during Surfin' USA and FFF sharing a mic with Foskett to do backups, pretty sure I heard him pull off a couple'a nice falsettos.

I really can't get over Blondie's guest spot, however brief it was. His voice has deepened a lot but sounds so damn powerful, hope someone got it on a decent video tonight.

Pretty badass show I must say! I will admit to being a tad disappointed with the rather predictable setlist (was hoping for Marcella, Little Bird, or at least PLMW) but really, it's hard to complain after seeing Blondie *knock* it outta the park on SOS, and Marks doing Summertime Blues was also a treat. Al's voice was spot-on and he does an admirable job as a sort of de-facto frontman for the band. Brian sounded pretty good despite royally goofing up CG (seemed like it caught him off-guard when they started it).

Jeff's set was very cool, he handles a guitar like no other player I've seen and has a crackerjack band that he made some seriously interesting sounds with. Was hoping for more collaboration between him and the Boys, though Surf's Up and Don't Talk were truly fantastic. Glad to see his rendition of Day in the Life close the set. Encore was the usual BA/SU/FFF trio with Beck spicing it up a bit with some neat solos, and the closing rendition of Danny Boy was quite nice. Afterwords I was able to snag the second half of the setlist, briefly meet David and chat with Bob L. and Darian which was a pleasure.

I definitely expect to see the on-stage collaboration grow throughout the tour, and maybe a couple of deep BB cuts sneaking their way into the first set. Great show all around, not one to miss if you're a fan of Beck.

I imagine Bruce would've gone back to session work, with Carl starting a group similar to what you stated (or maybe even doing some session work himself). I figure Brian would've taken it as an opportunity to produce Redwood and any other groups he was interested in working with. Maybe Dennis would've immersed himself more in the whole Manson dealio. I'd like to think Al would've tried to start a folk-type project; Mike would've obviously become Paul McCartney's main co-writer after the India trip. 

*sigh*  Every time a thread like this is started, a tape in the BBs vault turns to dust.....

Hell, I haven't been here as long as some so I apologize if this is the 500th thread about it, just wanted to hear other folks' opinions and couldn't find anything too quick through the search. Beats starting another M&B vs. BAD thread by a bit though, no?

I've heard from so many folks (including ol' Bruce) that Sloop John B sticks out like a sore thumb on Pet Sounds and nearly kills the flow of the album. Many of these people state that it would've fit much better on Summer Days, and some even note that TLGIOK would've been a better fit to close side 1. Personally I think that's absolute poppycock. Though it is a cover, I think Sloop fits like a glove on PS and is the perfect closer to the first side. It's lush, melancholy and nostalgic in a similar manner to That's Not Me or even Caroline, No to a degree. It would've been downright jarring to include on SDSM in my opinion, as would the bouncy TLGIOK on PS. The way it builds up in momentum until the fade-out into the end of the side has always been a bit of a highlight on the LP for me, not to mention the meticulous instrumentation characteristic of the record.

I wasn't able to find a topic dedicated to this debate, so I'd love to hear what you all think.

I would be very, very (pleasantly) shocked if it was any more than 5 to 10%. Probably 20 to 25% for the singles off the album.

Although I love Livin' With a Heartache, Goin' On, Getcha Back, It's Gettin' Late and SNJ, I think they'd be more respected in the "classic rock" canon had they broken up shortly after Light Album.

Yeah, I think it's getting a bit crazy. 

Oh, but what a perfect song to drunkenly belt out with your buddies after a long night of bar-hopping.

And I love Solar System to death.

I wouldn't call it a "good" album title, but it sure sounds cool.

Anyone else a big fan of this record? I assume many on here own the Rhino 4 CD box set (the Nuggets II box also kills), but the original album/first CD on the box is an absolute classic. What are some of your favorite tunes on it?

I love The Seeds "Pushin' Too Hard", The Remains "Don't Look Back", Shadows of Knight's "Oh Yeah" and Nazz's "Open My Eyes". Damn near every tune on here is a '60s gem though.

Some more I left out:

River Song - too many to name... mainly that first "Oooh", "Oh I wanna cry", and "Got to run away".
Friday Night - the intro, and "What's that feeling down inside of me? Rock 'n roll, food for the soul".
Rainbows - the first verse and the drums leading into it.
Tug of Love - the whole tune, especially the intro, and the background vocals behind "Feel the puuuull".
Holy Man - the transition from the somber piano intro into the whiny (and wonderfully '70s) synth line and the bass coming in, also those heavy cymbal chokes.
Let's Go Away for a While - beautifully written piece that (unintentionally?) manages to paint a sonic picture of an acid trip beginning to kick in.
That's Not Me - "I'm a little bit scared 'cause I haven't been home in a long time" --> 12-string ditty.
Let Us Go On This Way - Mike's extra-sensory perception bridge.
Mona - "Listen to Be My Baby, I know you're gonna love Phil Spector".
The Night Was So Young - "Waaake up, call me baby call me, te-ell me what's on your mah-ah-ind!"
Airplane - In general, the play between Mike's sweet vocal and Brian's shaky falsetto.
Baby Blue - "Late at night when the whole world's sleeping... I dream of you".

Seriously though, all these moments are forever engraved in my head and never fail to hit me when I listen to them.
