Ditto.

Ditto ditto. Sports has never been my thing. I do like baseball better than (American) football, though, which always seems like some sort of pseudo-military exercise or something. police
2  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / The Coolest TV Commercial Ever on: March 28, 2006, 11:22:32 PM

With voiceover work by the great "Word Jazz" creator Ken Nordine. I remember this commercial from when it first aired in 1977, and it really freaked my little 10 year old brain out. I just saw it again, and its power to freak my brain out has not diminished even slightly. Check it out:

Another trippy one featuring Ken Nordine: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VNKLmHvV3qo

I've also noticed that their bassist/keyboardist is Ian McDonald.  Is that the same one from King Crimson?

Yup, it's the same guy. Hard to believe!

Wow, I didn't know about all the other stuff discussed in the Demento interview. I must have heard an edited version around 1996 or so, which I still have on tape. In it, Brian says hello, introduces Smart Girls, they play it, and then that was it. Interesting!

Check out (yeccch) Larry King tonight, he's having a tribute to Don Knotts. Guests include Andy Griffith, Ron Howard, Jim Nabors, Joyce DeWitt, and Don's daughter.

Gentle Giant - Octopus

What a great prog album. I haven't heard it in about 20 years, and it sounds even better than I remember. Gentle Giant was amazing for the first 6 albums or so!

So how did the chat go?
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Van Dyke Parks' magnum opus. No, the other one... on: March 05, 2006, 09:44:49 PM

Why, the soundtrack to Casual Sex, of course!

When my wife put on this movie the other night, I almost fell out of my seat to see, emblazoned across the screen during the opening credits, "Soundtrack by Van Dyke Parks." Still, that wasn't enough to keep me in the room to actually watch the movie. I hate fluffy "teens needing to get laid" kind of films, generally, and this seemed to be that kind of a movie.

Anyone familiar with this film and its soundtrack?

I actually love Smart Girls, and it never fails to put a huge smile on my face. The first time I heard it, it was on the Dr. Demento show. Brian stopped by the studio and chatted a bit with the Dr., and he brought a tape of Smart Girls with him. That's why he stopped by! I nearly fell out of my seat hearing Brian's "rapping" and knowing that Brian knew that the song was funny enough to be on Dr. Demento (which features funny, strange, sick, and/or demented songs). So the track wasn't to be taken seriously, it was supposed to be funny! If you try to take the song seriously, it's a miserable failure. But on the Dr. Demento show, it blew my mind, and I love it to this day.  Afro
