Best BB album since Love You. Definitely will not be forgotten through the years as one member said. The suite at the end has some of Brian's finest work of his career. The rest is good to great. Still can't believe the album exists and sounds as good as it does for 2012.

Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / The Beach Boys And My Life
|

Hey guys, I've been on the boards for a bit but I wanted to share a story I never have before about my experience listening to the Beach Boys.
I have a vague recollection of listening to my mom's beach boys hits CD when I was 9 or 10 and going NUTS. I don't remember which collection it was but it had mostly early surf stuff and I would listen to it and dance a lot.
One day my sibling told me that it wasn't 'cool' to listen to the Beach Boys. They were out of fashion, and I would never make friends liking music like that. So being an idiot kid, I stopped completely.
Over the next ten years I played and studied music in school bands but was always frustrated with pop music. It just wasn't clever or spiritual enough. I liked the Beatles, but found modern music to be off-putting.
In my sophomore year in college, I listened to Pet Sounds and DEAR GOD IT WAS BLISS. I listened to that album obsessively, over and over, day after day, for almost 3 years. During that time I discovered SMiLE, Love You, and returned to the early stuff I remembered from my childhood and couldn't believe how beautiful, rich, complex, and spiritual it all was.
I still listen to the Beach Boys nearly every day. I can't believe how the music I loved when I was a small kid still resonates with my soul to this day. The music of Brian is beautiful and magical, and I just wanted to share my story of coming to appreciate it.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Moments of Divinity in BB Songs

I don't know about you guys, but there are certain moments in BB songs that produce a high for me that is up there with what drugs or meditation could achieve, a feeling of being in the presence of the divine. I can't think of another musician that does that for me.
I'm sure I'm not alone in this feeling. What specific moments help you achieve this?
For me-
The chorus of 'Little Girl I Once Knew'
Tag of 'You Still Believe in Me'
Second verse of 'Wouldn't it Be Nice' when when the harmonies come in
Bridge (Sometimes I feel very sad) of 'I Just Wasn't Made for These Times'
Vocal-only section of 'Heroes and Villains' (before the cantina section)

I am embarrassed for the BB every time I hear the lyrics to 'When I Grow Up to Be A Man'
God Only Knows is not the best song on PS
Don't Worry Baby is vastly overrated (and on a similar note, She Knows Me Too Well is very underrated)
The Little Girl I Once Knew is a top 10, maybe top 5 BB song
The Don't Talk vocal snippet from the PS box set is the best music Brian/The BB ever released

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / First EP (Psychedelic Electro-Pop)

Hello SS, I am close to completing college, and have been working on a short EP in my spare time that I wish to release soon. I am very inspired by the work of Brian, and tried to incorporate elements of his style in my music. Anyway I am still working on it (I have to rerecord all the vocals and make some changes to several of the songs) but I was wondering if any of you would be willing to provide feedback? If so I'd really appreciate it. I don't know a ton about music theory but I wanted to give it a shot because I love songwriting. Link: http://www.2shared.com/file/oNgAEghN/Darnomite_-_Jokes_and_Qualia_w.html?Thanks, -O (aka Darnomite) P.S. Could you let me know if I unconsciously plagiarized the BB? I definitely didn't seek to but I think it's possible it could have happened by accident

Smiley Smile Stuff / 'Rank the Tracks' / Re: Rank the tracks #12: Smiley Smile

Mentioned this in another thread, but does anyone know if Wind Chimes was written about Brian's burgeoning mental illness? I just get that vibe from the song, and the fact that it's followed by Fire on the smile setlist makes me think it's true. If I'm wrong, does anyone know what the song is actually about?

I Just Wasn't Made for These Times --- "Sometimes...I feel....very sad"
You Still Believe in Me --- End harmonies
Our Prayer
Til I Die ---refrain
Don't Talk (Vocal snippet) from Pet Sounds sessions
Life Suite on TWGMTR
Break Away --- "Found it was in my head" section
Wind Chimes (Smile Sessions version) --- For some reason I always believed this song was about Brian falling into mental illness. It brings tears to my eyes for that reason

Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys Love You

Musically, it sounds as if Little Deuce Coupe got molested by its uncle.
Ladies and gentlemen, the quote of the year. That's exactly when I stopped reading. Brian, Al and Bruce were 23 when Pet Sounds came out. Mike was 25. Using the "Love You is creepy" logic, then Pet Sounds is creepy too. Hell, Mike already had a wife and a daughter when frickin' Surfin' first came out. the fictional narrators of most Beach Boys songs are teenagers. but that doesn't make it creepy. Not buying it....there's a huge difference between mid-20 year olds singing about teenagers than 40-somethings. Plus it's over the top on Love You. No non-creepy song begins with the lyrics 'She's a roller-skating CHILD' and has a chorus that says 'And we'll make sweet love til the sun goes down'
