What a superb article. It hit all the right notes for me- offering us a peek into their world instead of trying to regurgitate their entire history.

I got chills and my eyes watered a bit reading about Brian's last words to Carl. (Ok, just thinking about it again to type the sentence I just typed made my eyes water again- ah!)

Thank you, startbb. I'm always fascinated to see who gets these assignments. I'm encouraged by this news. I think the Newsweek writer was a bad appointment.

Can someone *please* tell me who wrote the article?

And how many pages long is it?

Who is the author for this piece?

81  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Unending Question: Does He Mean To Be Funny? on: June 07, 2012, 10:47:59 AM
For the IJWMFTT remark, I absolutely believe he was intending to be a wiseass and kind of taking a crack at the cliched question posed.

For the commercial question, he definitely did not give the kind of answer that the interviewer was looking for but his answer made perfect sense in that he offered an example of a song created to have commercial appeal.  I don't think he was intending to be funny or off-beat.

There are so many different social norms that we all adhere to that Brian probably never had to learn. He doesn't have to know how to make people feel comfortable talking to you because people are going to talk to him no matter what. And he doesn't have to care if they understand what he's saying or not. Brian answered that commercial question the way he thought it should be answered and didn't give a hoot who it satisfied. How awesome is that?

The responsibility falls to his bandmates and Fosketts of the world to soften the tension and provide pleasant follow-up comments to jarring answers.

It's quite touching to see it done so masterfully by these guys, really.

First showing on Channel Thirteen (PBS in New York) is the 4th of July at 9:30 PM. Luckily I'm a loser with no social life, so being at home to watch public television on one of the biggest party/barbecue holidays of the year in the US will be no problem  LOL

Worry not, your internet friends will be here with you.
83  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys' Crazy Summer (Fantastic article) on: June 06, 2012, 11:20:07 PM
I'm a big fan of this type of profile but I really did not enjoy this article.

I also really did not enjoy how the author spewed  info from Carlin's book without sourcing it. It's very easy to sound well informed to the public when you've read the BB cliffnotes.
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Front Row Center - The Beach Boys Doing It Again on: June 06, 2012, 10:58:36 PM
Guys, I don't think this site is accurate. It says it's not showing for me either while my PBS station site shows multiple airings in July.
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Think About The Days is a poor album opener on: June 06, 2012, 10:56:44 PM
I could not disagree more with the OP. Sitting this song obstinately at the beginning of the album is symptomatic of the old-soul hyper-self-aware flavor that the Brian-led Beach Boys marinated in. It's a memento mori before the listens are allowed a stroll around dreamland. The album feels like a life to me and the idea that you come into this world the same way you leave it: alone.

If Think About the Days were placed before the final suite it would seem to reaffirm the media cliche of the "two Beach Boys" duality, which I believe to be false.
86  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Let's discuss the lyrics, shall we? on: June 06, 2012, 12:26:10 PM
What is happening during this line in Summer's Gone:

Summer's gone
Gone like yesterday
The nights grow cold
It's time to go
I'm thinking maybe I'll just stay

That is how it appears in the lyrics, but it sounds like Brian starts to say something else (change?) and then Bruce comes in with "stay."

It's a pretty interesting moment in that song.
87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rank the tracks on the new album. on: June 06, 2012, 12:10:13 PM
OMGGGGGG YESSSS
1. From There to Back Again
2. Pacific Coast Highway
3. Think About the Days
4. Isn't It Time
5. Shelter
6. Summer's Gone

Really good, will listen forever
7. Spring Vacation
8. That's Why God Made the Radio
9. Strange World

Meh.... these will scarcely ever make a mix playlist
10. The Private Life of Bill and Sue
11. Daybreak Over the Ocean

Not interested
12. Beaches in Mind

After 5 or 6 full listens. Beaches in Mind is the only song I have to skip. This is a good album.

I can't believe that we just got "From There and Back Again" from Brian Wilson in 2012. Sure is a strange world.
88  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 50th Anniversary Tour Dates (as they roll out) (*UPDATED, Feb 15th*) on: June 05, 2012, 05:38:29 PM

A family member got a front section seat at the Hollywood Bowl 8 days before the gig despite it being sold out. My guess is if the VIP Meet and Greet's etc don't sell out, those seats go back into the pot.

Not worth the wait or risk IMO.

Through Ticketmaster?!

How do I find out when it's playing in my area? Is there a long term tv guide anywhere?

Find the website for your local PBS station and start searching around.
90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: June 05, 2012, 09:12:55 AM
The other guy's facial expressions while one guy is clearly reading a teleprompter are hilarious. Except Brian, who is completely expressionless.

This so much. I've watched these videos over and over again to see what each person is doing and they all seem so bemused. Except Brian. Never has anyone worn a straight face like Brian Wilson.

The video screen was cool, and occasionally an intentional or unintentional source of hilarity. Some of the graphics they use are laughably ridiculous.

Some of those graphics are straight outta Windows Media Player.

And the female silhouette that showed up in any songs with the word "dance" in the title... with the skirt and the knee-high boots and the boobs and stuff..... I'm sorry but I just can't take that and Al Jardine in on the same eyeballs.

On being back in the studio with the Beach Boys.

"It was nuts," Wilson says. "It was a nutbuster."

 LOL

The line above that is a gem too.

"We've had 50 years' practice," Wilson says, "not just in music but in being guys."

Jeez. Justyn sounds and looks so much like Carl in All This is That it's eerie. What an incredible performance.

Great videos, Justin. Thanks!

Sidenote: What is with Jeff doing that walk across the stage thing during Marcella? He did that in Berkeley too. Is it to prove that Brian is singing alone or is he just.... dancing?

I'm a terrible photographer, an even worse videographer, and a constant-dancer..... so cut me some slack on the quality of what follows.

Is this not the most badass shot of Al and Dave ever? I sent it to them on Facebook but idk if they'll see it.

When I ran over to Brian during "Add Some Music"

Ivy, that wasn't you in the front row standing up and screaming stuff at Mike Love before they started "All This Is That", was it?

......

NO!

Yeh I noticed BW seemingly randomly getting really into certain songs. I noticed he was singing along to songs here and there, and playing the keyboard quite a bit more than I expected. He was rocking around and making weird hand gestures during 'Disney Girls', and I think he was playing along to 'All This is That' as well. Wish I could remember more details.

Oh I didn't even notice that. I had a pretty bad view of him. I was in the front row but I was in front of Al, so for the most part, all I saw was the top half of his head and the rest was covered by piano. So I'm only basing this on what I heard and when I watched him during Add Some Music.

Brian was a cut up during the soundcheck, though.

Scott T: "Brian, what song do you want to sing?"
Brian: "Do It Again"
Everyone: "......."
Mike: "Yeah I want to do that one too."

Brian: "Perfect, teleprompter, perfect."

And then when he just got up, walked across the stage, and started gesturing for the entire audience to leave. HAHA.

WOWOWWOWOWOWOW.

I'm going to post more later when I can get my thoughts/photos/videos together but wow! That was easily one of the best nights of my life. An incredible show. I nearly keeled over when I heard the first notes of "Kiss Me Baby" (I'd been avoiding peeking at previous set lists and had NO idea it was coming.)

Looking back at the other recent reviews of the shows on this site, I have to guess that Brian was quite as "on" this show as recent others. There weren't any incidents or anything, but he seemed to be wanting to get it over with.

Not complaining though, at all. I am beyond elated.

Photos to come!
