Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Unending Question: Does He Mean To Be Funny?

For the IJWMFTT remark, I absolutely believe he was intending to be a wiseass and kind of taking a crack at the cliched question posed.
For the commercial question, he definitely did not give the kind of answer that the interviewer was looking for but his answer made perfect sense in that he offered an example of a song created to have commercial appeal. I don't think he was intending to be funny or off-beat.
There are so many different social norms that we all adhere to that Brian probably never had to learn. He doesn't have to know how to make people feel comfortable talking to you because people are going to talk to him no matter what. And he doesn't have to care if they understand what he's saying or not. Brian answered that commercial question the way he thought it should be answered and didn't give a hoot who it satisfied. How awesome is that?
The responsibility falls to his bandmates and Fosketts of the world to soften the tension and provide pleasant follow-up comments to jarring answers.
It's quite touching to see it done so masterfully by these guys, really.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Think About The Days is a poor album opener

I could not disagree more with the OP. Sitting this song obstinately at the beginning of the album is symptomatic of the old-soul hyper-self-aware flavor that the Brian-led Beach Boys marinated in. It's a memento mori before the listens are allowed a stroll around dreamland. The album feels like a life to me and the idea that you come into this world the same way you leave it: alone.
If Think About the Days were placed before the final suite it would seem to reaffirm the media cliche of the "two Beach Boys" duality, which I believe to be false.

What is happening during this line in Summer's Gone:
Summer's gone Gone like yesterday The nights grow cold It's time to go I'm thinking maybe I'll just stay
That is how it appears in the lyrics, but it sounds like Brian starts to say something else (change?) and then Bruce comes in with "stay."
It's a pretty interesting moment in that song.

OMGGGGGG YESSSS 1. From There to Back Again 2. Pacific Coast Highway 3. Think About the Days 4. Isn't It Time 5. Shelter 6. Summer's Gone
Really good, will listen forever 7. Spring Vacation 8. That's Why God Made the Radio 9. Strange World
Meh.... these will scarcely ever make a mix playlist 10. The Private Life of Bill and Sue 11. Daybreak Over the Ocean
Not interested 12. Beaches in Mind
After 5 or 6 full listens. Beaches in Mind is the only song I have to skip. This is a good album.
I can't believe that we just got "From There and Back Again" from Brian Wilson in 2012. Sure is a strange world.

The other guy's facial expressions while one guy is clearly reading a teleprompter are hilarious. Except Brian, who is completely expressionless.
This so much. I've watched these videos over and over again to see what each person is doing and they all seem so bemused. Except Brian. Never has anyone worn a straight face like Brian Wilson.

The video screen was cool, and occasionally an intentional or unintentional source of hilarity. Some of the graphics they use are laughably ridiculous. Some of those graphics are straight outta Windows Media Player. And the female silhouette that showed up in any songs with the word "dance" in the title... with the skirt and the knee-high boots and the boobs and stuff..... I'm sorry but I just can't take that and Al Jardine in on the same eyeballs.

Yeh I noticed BW seemingly randomly getting really into certain songs. I noticed he was singing along to songs here and there, and playing the keyboard quite a bit more than I expected. He was rocking around and making weird hand gestures during 'Disney Girls', and I think he was playing along to 'All This is That' as well. Wish I could remember more details.
Oh I didn't even notice that. I had a pretty bad view of him. I was in the front row but I was in front of Al, so for the most part, all I saw was the top half of his head and the rest was covered by piano. So I'm only basing this on what I heard and when I watched him during Add Some Music. Brian was a cut up during the soundcheck, though. Scott T: "Brian, what song do you want to sing?" Brian: "Do It Again" Everyone: "......." Mike: "Yeah I want to do that one too." Brian: "Perfect, teleprompter, perfect." And then when he just got up, walked across the stage, and started gesturing for the entire audience to leave. HAHA.

WOWOWWOWOWOWOW.
I'm going to post more later when I can get my thoughts/photos/videos together but wow! That was easily one of the best nights of my life. An incredible show. I nearly keeled over when I heard the first notes of "Kiss Me Baby" (I'd been avoiding peeking at previous set lists and had NO idea it was coming.)
Looking back at the other recent reviews of the shows on this site, I have to guess that Brian was quite as "on" this show as recent others. There weren't any incidents or anything, but he seemed to be wanting to get it over with.
Not complaining though, at all. I am beyond elated.
Photos to come!
