Look at Brian have fun on "Sail On Sailor"...he's waving his arms around and the other members are playing along with him, Mike especially:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzUqemBeYUk&feature=related

By the end of the song, nearly the entire band are following Brian's choreography--hilarious!

Hahahaha! I love this! In Tahoe, Jeff followed along with Brian but only Jeff. It's so cute to see the whole band at it.

I would love to know how Brian chooses his choreography. Often he hits his moves a couple words too early but this little number looks more about punctuation than acting out the song.

Smokin

And, oh yeah...sorry about using the wrong "meaningless" thread.  The title made it seem like a logical place for a "light" post.  But whatever.... I'm a rule breaker!!!  Evil Rock!

 LOL

One can't be bothered to post in the right thread when they have beaches in mind.
55  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What *Beach Boys* Are You Listening To Right Now? on: August 10, 2012, 03:08:29 PM
I've also had the experience of Friends growing on me. I thought the title track was an earsore when I listened to greatest hits playlists and the album seemed cartoony to me. Now it's one of the most versatile listens for me.

I find myself always getting into Pacific Ocean Blue at the end of the summer. But I don't like to listen to it anywhere but the car.  At home and at the office I've been listening to Country Air on repeat and Holland.
56  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Monkees Reunion w/ Nesmith on: August 08, 2012, 10:23:17 AM
Wow! I remember reading something Micky said about all four of them considering a reunion at the end of the 2011. It's really too bad that this couldn't have happened while they were all still here.

But I'm still excited! I just saw Micky last month at the California State Fair and he had a ton of energy.

PS- Egohanger, your signature makes me laugh every time I read it. That might be one of my favorite sessions ever.

Aside from the tv show COPS, I have never seen an out-of-shape man rock a bare chest with as much reckless abandon as Mr. Brian Wilson. It's like a shirt wouldn't even make sense.

Especially love the unzipped track jacket and booty shorts look. Somewhere, of camera, Bruce Johnston was taking notes.
58  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Own a Beach Boys shirt? Post it here. on: August 07, 2012, 10:31:05 PM
welp. Bumped into this while searching for a shirt I wanted on ebay. The lister said he bought it at a Beach Boys concert. =/

59  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The very worst Beach Boys related 'song' ever released on: July 31, 2012, 10:50:22 AM
It's not fun. It's certainly not sun. It's such a hollow, facile statement and it's just not fun to listen to. It certainly doesn't move me to anything but foul language and cursing.

I would not consider it a favorite, but Spring Vacation is one of the songs I listen to most off of the album. It's classic Beach Boys in a kinda cringey, kinda SMH way. The lyrics are so literal and honest and endearingly out of touch with the plight of the everyday man (Easy money, ain't life funny? 8% unemployed might not think so) The lyrics literally sound like Brian just started talking about the upcoming tour and they were all like "Ok, good enough, go with it." Also: the song is perfect for car duets.

I do think the title should be different. I recommend "Yeah, We're The Beach Boys. Suck it, Everyone Else."

I think the bottom line here is that everybody, I mean EVERYBODY needs to be careful about how they post their comments.  Writing what's on your mind can translate a lot differently when read by others, as opposed to casually speaking it in a conversation.  If you type in something cute and quaint as if you're speaking it, there's a chance it might read as something inappropriate.  There are so many situations where this can happen.  Friendly sarcasm can come across as an insulting assault.

Best thing to do is read your post carefully before you hit that 'post' button.   Smiley

OR people could just be themselves and everyone can work on not taking teh internets so srsly.

I don't post much so I don't really have a place in this discussion, but I do find the discouragement of reviving old threads REALLY weird. I own/operate a forum for another musical artist and we love it when that happens.
61  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The very worst Beach Boys related 'song' ever released on: July 31, 2012, 10:19:47 AM

Still, I'll grant you that I don't understand what he means by "more". What "more" is there to do with a romantic interest after dark, meaning beyond makin' teh sweet love? Is he alluding to butt sex? I don't know.

Not to mention the fact that the "mama" is apparently around when the teenage couple is makin' "sweet love".

Wow, I don't know how I never thought of that. I too have long wondered what "more" meant and just assumed things were going to get freakier.

I'm also sad that this song is being discussed in this thread. =/ I mean, Brian's beast howling of the last line sounding like he's across the room from the mic as his introduction on the album is enough to make it awesome.

ETA: I realize now why I never considered "more" as meaning more of the same. If they meant it in that way, wouldn't the phrasing be "We'll make sweet loving when the sun goes down, we'll do IT even more when your mama's not around" The absence of the "it" definitely makes it sound like the activity is going to change.

In the cantina margaritas keep the spirits high
There I watched her
She spun around and wound in the warmth
her body fanned the flame of the dance

Dance, Margarita
don't you know that IŤm in love with you?

I was an English major and I've scarcely read poetry as beautiful, clever, and illustrative as this.

64  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Somewhat painful Bruce Johnston interview in a Dutch magazine on: July 26, 2012, 10:51:23 PM

I have been dismissing Bruce's opinions on Europe ever since I learned that he thinks it rhymes with "sure of".

This is the funniest thing I have read all week.

I've had a recent run in with Bruce's sass and I have come out of it loving him all the more. I appreciate his all-business approach and if we're looking at the Beach Boys as a representation of riding the American Dream wave in the 20th century, his story is as poignant as any others in the band.

And his face reminds me of a chocolate chip cookie.

Gah, I'm thinking of bidding. These are too great.

For some reason, this matter-of-fact description cracked me up:

This auction is for an 3.5 x 4.5 original photograph of Brian Wilson sitting at a table in what looks like a hotel room. He is naked, all he is wearing is a hat.

Wow Ivy, that's some pretty cool stuff. Just to clarify, did Bruce actually say to you he was closed for business?

Yes, lol. He was kind of rude but I don't blame him. He looked totally exhausted.
67  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Standing Up VS Sitting Down on: July 18, 2012, 03:47:11 PM
I prefer to sit, but sometimes feel compelled to stand when Bruce Johnston comes out from behind his keyboard and pleads with me to.  Almost like the Devil made me do it kinda thing...

lol.

I stand at concerts. I do not like sitting because it feels too passive.... like I'm watching a movie. It ruins the whole experience for me. I'm also usually too excited to sit.

I stood in the front row at two different BB concerts this summer (often as the only person standing) and not once did anyone request that I sit. If they would have, I would have moved somewhere out of the way and stood there.
68  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Which show would you like a DVD/CD from? on: July 17, 2012, 09:33:34 PM
At the Tahoe show, the venue was covered in flyers saying that the concert was being recorded for possible distribution. Three cameras were on the guys the whole night and would occasionally pan to the audience for a reaction shot.

At the end of the night, Mike said something like "I hope you smiled for the cameras, you never know, you might see it on PBS some time."

Insinuating that there was drug should be enough to piss off those invested in the comeback brand.
70  Smiley Smile Stuff / Concert Reviews / Re: Show 51: Harvey's Lake Tahoe Amphitheater - Stateline, NV 7/15/12 on: July 17, 2012, 03:07:42 PM
Yes, I am here!

The show was absolutely incredible. I wanted to go to a second show because the first time I was seated in front of Mike and Al and could hardly see Brian. This time around I had a perfect view of him and thought he rocked harder than I had seen at Berkeley and in youtube clips. He seemed to be in a really happy mood and was smiling a ton. His voice was stronger and smoother than I have heard from him this tour. The only mess up I saw from him was stumbling in late on TWGMTR, which seems to happen often.

There were a lot of lyric screw-ups. Unsurprisingly, Al was behind a fair number of them. But he sounded as good as ever.

I reallllllllllllllllllllllly loved Dave's Pet Sounds solo. I have been avoiding reading about set lists so it came as a surprise to me and I was blown away.

California Saga sounded beautiful but were kind of an awkward presence. I don't think the crowd really knew what to do with them. Also, the songs they performed are not horribly well-known so that added to the tepid response, imo. Mike was standing just a few feet stage right the whole time giving thumbs up and blowing kisses to his daughter. It was pretty sweet.

Some of the most interesting stuff happened off of the stage. For one thing, the crowd was FULL of family. Mike's wife and his wife's family were seated on either side of me. He also mentioned that his first wife was in the crowd as well. Just a row or two behind Mike's wife was Melinda and a selection of their children (the two teenage girls and a young son, I think.) I stayed at Harvey's hotel.... and so did everyone else! I saw Bruce and Dave after the show in the elevator well. Dave chatted a little bit but Bruce was "closed for business" (lol!) They were both totally unaccompanied in the middle of a huge mass of fans. I saw basically all of the California Saga in the lobby along with assorted backing band members (who no one else seemed to recognize at all). Marilynn Wilson-Rutherford was in front of me in the line for Starbucks and Billy and Carnie both came over to talk to her. It was pretty awesome. Like a Beach Boys bio was coming to life before my very eyes!

An incredible experience. A beautiful location. A fun travel buddy. (hey KW! I know you're reading this!) And a perfect last American performance. Bravo!

I took a couple of videos and pictures, I'll post when I get a chance to upload.

It's almost too spine-chillingly perfect that Brian's birthday should land on the longest day of summer.

Happy birthday, Brian. Thank you and I love you.

(And see you in a couple weeks! Wink
73  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New review of \ on: June 11, 2012, 02:51:32 PM
Yes, I thank Mr. Carlin for sharing the review.  I am not a fan of profane language in scholarly work; I find it neither kitsch nor usefully.  When the essay gives itself over to the music, despite its self-inflicted resistant critical imperatives, it succeeds best.  I can only assert again, as I did in my Amazon review (likely the only one that refers to Cicero, so you can find it if you wish), that "skipping" songs because they appear (superficially) to be superficial, misses the complex, evolving integrity of the "album."  Mr. Carlin, like so many reviewers, falls into the Manichean trap of “summer fun” (Mike) vs. “sundown death” (Brian).  This long day, this long summer we call the Beach Boys celebrates and laments both modes and moments.

you must be the worst person to hang out with in real life

Thanks for the review, Peter. Really enjoyed it.
74  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Do You Think The Beach Boys Can/Will Ever Perform... on: June 11, 2012, 02:46:32 PM
If they were 60 years old instead of 70, I could imagine a Pet Sounds tour of small venues to capitalize on the waves of critical acclaim its gotten in the past couple of decades. But, at this age, IF they decide to do another tour it would almost certainly be the last and I don't think they would want to end their career with a handful of intimate engagement Pet Sounds gigs.

But who knows. We're under four years away from the 50th anniversary of the album now....

Summer's On! (lyrics by M. Love)

Summer's On!
Summer's here to stay
Here today
Just like yesterday

Old friends have gone
They've gone to surf some bitchin' waves
Our dreams hold on
You know we still have more to say

now that's a hit!
