Wow, I hate to get weepy here, but seeing Mike and Brian on that couch together was really touching.
For all over the unsavory Mr. Positivity-hey-me-too-ness Mike has exhibited in the past, he's really come around to be a wonderful advocate of Brian's. Cool interview.
Also I love that Brian continuously rocks the Chuck Taylors and Mike goes for the no-socks-with-dress-shoes look.
ETA: Dave's shades kill me.

It's a disgrace that any group would agree to a "for fee" meet and greet. This should have been free to the fans, as a thank you for their support of the band over all of these years.
BLAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH No seriously, Mike and Bruce once again let down the group with the shirt and shorts in that picture.
And by "let down" do you mean "turn the heat up to a tropical fever pitch of awesomeness"? Yes I have fully come to terms with the fact that I spent way too much money on this but the mere fact that I'm going to be able to come face to face with my heroes ultimately justifies it for me. Really, I think I would pay twice as much for that (since I haven't been as lucky as others who have had the experience before.) Maybe I'll try to like..... put an elbow on Mike's shoulder or do a from-behind hug to Brian. I just really don't like the idea of just standing there. Anyway, thanks to everyone who posted pictures and told accounts.

Thanks for starting this. I found this account on tumblr and it seems pretty consistent with what I have read elsewhere: We only heard the Carl tribute bc we had to line up for the M&G. It goes fast. Don’t blink or you’ll have a picture of your eyelids. And if you have dreams of going, “Hey, how about tossing in ‘Stoked’ tonight so David can shred?” don’t bc you’ll hold up the line. We were told point blank they’re not really chatty. But the funny thing is when my wife walked in ahead of me, Mike’s eyeballs popped out of his head. My wife is 48, a year older than me, and I like to think of her as hot stuff. Apparently Mike and I have the same taste. He squeezed in tight and then made a point of shaking her hand. That made him obliged to shake mine. He was very friendly, though. http://cheapocheapo.tumblr.com/post/22058099673/oh-and-im-sure-some-of-you-have-seen-this-but-iAlso the set up of the pictures look reallllllly awkward. Kind of disappointing but I'm still excited. For anyone who has been to one of these, do you get to meet the band? Jeff and Scotts and Darian, etc?

“Radio was my whole education,” says Brian Wilson. “Chuck Berry, Rosemary Clooney, The Four Freshmen, Phil Spector, Little Richard... To hear ‘That’s Why God Made The Radio’ on the radio would be a thrill beyond belief, it really would. It would be a thrill beyond belief.” Oooooooooh, Brian.

TimmyC, I'm sorry, sure don't intend to leave the wrong impression. In my opinion, the package was worth EVERY PENNY I paid, if just for the fact I had a great seat for the concert that I couldn't have possibly acquired any other way. A couple of snafus with the VIP portion the first night, but those will work out better later on. For the meet & greet, I'd just suggest being aggressive. Pick the one you'd most like to say something to & tell him what's on your mind, & then try to move on to the next before the photo. Wish I had planned a little better & known a little more beforehand, but I felt the Beach Boys (with the obvious and understandable exception of Brian) were most co-operative. It was quick, but I'm still thrilled today!
Thanks for all the info, SonoraDick! Was the backing band around available to be met or was it just the 5 Boys?

Brian leans in, grabs my hand, and says "I can see you've had some dark times in your life."
Wow! Great story. That's a memory for life. I wonder how many other stories like this are out there. How did you react to that statement from him? What do you guys think of May, 1968 for the period of Brian's commitment? April seems like it would have been a hard month for him.
I don't think that these type of guesstimations are particularly useful when considering with mental illness. Most of the time there is no outside cause. Mostly likely he was just getting sicker and sicker until he did or said something or felt something that got him committed.

If I remember correctly some tribute band has some sort of copyright and/or monopoly on the legit looking ones .Or I'm crazy. Why would a cover band be the only people allowed to wear a shirt?
Yeah.... I don't know how that would work but having just completed another failed search for these, I wouldn't rule anything out. These shirts are straight-up extinct.

There is just so so so much going on here. I agree with those before who sad it is mostly sad and scary... but god, it's funny too. It's funny, just when you start thinking "Oh god there he goes this is going absolutely nowhere" he turns it around and gets his point across pretty well. "Written music with an unwritten sound"? That's pretty frigging beautiful and makes total sense. The age/children thing..... he didn't get out too well but it goes along with the idea that while writing Pet Sounds they thought of themselves as teenagers in their 20s (I think it was Tony Asher who said this..... or was it VDP about Smile... I forget.) ((And I love how he draws a *very* serious distinction between a 25/26 yr old and someone "rapidly approaching 30")) The face he is making at 2:33 cracks me up. Like he's saying "Yeah, you know you love it" Without knowing anything else about Brian, I would say his behavior is consistent with someone who has taken a lot of coke. And re: how this compares to Brian's present-day persona.... I think how he acts today is a mixture of the voluntary and involuntary. I think most of it is disinterest. But there was that one interview (again, I forget what it's from) where they show a clip of the Mike Douglas show where he's talking about drug use and the interviewer asks him what he thinks of the clip and Brian remarks upon how fast he used to be able to talk when he was young...

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl and Dennis as Holograms

Hologram Murry would get this band back on track. No more phony singing for money. They'll start singing from their hearts again like they used to.
lol. OK, the Tupac hologram was absolutely incredible. And after three days of sucking down every substance imaginable, my friends who went to Coachella were legitimately thrown by it. They say it looks even more life-like in person (and probably from farther away because the face is the weakest part.) They've actually had one of these in the works for Michael Jackson for years now. It's going to be in Las Vegas when the Cirque show sets up camp there next year. But, yeah, a big no to Dennis and Carl. Their deaths are not surrounded by mystery and wonder like Tupac's. They weren't really physical artists on stage so the holograms would be pretty boring (unless Dennis took off his clothes....) And if Brian's people are concerned that their old-ass fans don't understand iTunes, they certainly will not understand a hologram.
