Carl may have embarrassed himself a little on stage but it was truly the Aussie press that came out looking unprofessional, nasty and truly embarrassing. Pack of rabid dogs. Were you aware of it at the time it happened? You were very little at the time. I don't think in 1978 I was aware of the Beach Boys other than that the oldies radio show my father listened to on Saturdays used Barbara Ann as a jingle. - I'm not arguing, just asking. Of course not, I've seen clips of the so called "interview" with Carl by the Aussie media.

It was very out of character for him. I may be mistaken, but I don't think there were any other incidents that were ever documented about Carl being inebriated while on stage. While listening to him on stage that day it sounded funny, but I don't think anybody was laughing when he fell down. I think the band understood what happened and forgave him right away. But the Australian press obviously made a big deal about it, and he was still a little high the next day, as can be seen during the press interview. If he'd done it in America, it probably wouldn't have been acknowledged by the press - they were use to seeing singers stoned or drunk on stage all the time. Carl continued having his drinks before/after concerts right up until his last concert. Mike Love was very surprised and thought he should have quit as soon as he found out he had cancer.
You're right about the Australian press Mikie, They made a huge deal out of it, like they do with everything. Carl may have embarrassed himself a little on stage but it was truly the Aussie press that came out looking unprofessional, nasty and truly embarrassing. Pack of rabid dogs.

How anyone can be outraged over the acts of an inconsequential pop star is beyond me.
But not beyond you to tell us that it's beyond you. Would he actually get up on stage if it was someone that could clock him one? Nah. I do like some of his songs, but don't think they are the work of a musical genius though.

Kanye please STFU. I like Shirley Manson's facebook post:
Dear Kanye West It is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry. You disrespect your own remarkable talents and more importantly you disrespect the talent, hard work and tenacity of all artists when you go so rudely and savagely after such an accomplished and humble artist like BECK. You make yourself look small and petty and spoilt. In attempting to reduce the importance of one great talent over another, you make a mockery of all musicians and music from every genre, including your own. Grow up and stop throwing your toys around. You are making yourself look like a complete twat. Ps.I am pretty certain Beyonce doesn't need you fighting any battles on her account. Seems like she's got everything covered perfectly well on her own.
How dare he go on stage whilst someone else is receiving an award. I don't care whether it was intended as a joke (though his comments afterwards don't support that), it's unprofessional and rude. Let the person have their time in the sun. Narcissistic windbag.

I was a teenager in the 80's so the music obviously had an impact and I have a soft spot for it (70's still favourite era though). Some albums I owned: Huey Lewis and the News - Sports Madonna - Like a Virgin Australian Crawl - The Boys Light Up, Sirocco Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA Lou Reed - New Sensations AC/DC - Back in Black Michael Jackson - Thriller. Madness - Complete Madness Songs: She Blinded me with Science - Thomas Dolby To Be or Not to Be - Mel Brooks Too, too many to list. Lots of one hit wonders. I loved The Nolans album ! And The Village People's You Can't Stop the Music. I was 11 and had a crush on the construction worker Hahah! I still get teased by my family about that.

"Ten Little Indians" is a children's nursery rhyme dating back to 1868. It was used primarily to teach young children how to count.
The "one little, two little, three little . . ." melody is the only similarity to the Beach Boys tune. Usher is on record stating his main influence was "Running Bear" by Johnny Preston.
The title of Agatha Christie's 1939 novel And Then There Were None was borrowed from the last line of a minstrel version of the nursery rhyme. When a film of the novel was made in 1965, the title was changed to Ten Little Indians.
The disappointing chart performance of "Ten Little Indians," compared to their first at bat with Capitol ("Surfin' Safari"), reportedly shook Brian. He confided in a Capitol executive that he was worried the group was through and was unsure of their next move. Keep in mind that a #49 hit in Billboard is not too shabby. In less than ten years, they would have been thrilled with a #49 hit. But when your debut single hits like "Surfin' Safari" and "409" did, #49 is, well, disappointing. But there was never any consideration given to recording more children's nursery rhymes.
Enter Chuck Berry and Jimmy Bowles. And then Gene Goodman, younger brother of band leader Benny Goodman.
The original title for the novel "And then there were none" was 10 Little n******. Obviously it was retitled at a later date.

I want that shirt Dennis has on! Me too. That's why I bought one in 1974! If you look around the internet, you will find one, but it has "Endless Summer Tour" written on the back. I've also seen the original on Ebay once in awhile. Good buy! You still have it then? I want that shirt Dennis has on! You mean the exact one he wore or a similar? They were available on the Beach Boys' website's merchandise section a few years ago. I have one of them. On the back it says "Endless summer tour", I don't know if that was the case with the one Dennis wears in this picture Ha! Well the exact one with him IN it, would be nice, but a similar one would do just fine

The original image, caption, and replies which reposted the original have been removed after consideration. The line cannot be crossed, if it's decided by the admins/mods that the line was close enough to be considered crossed to raise a red flag, it will all be deleted. Please consider before posting, consider that an across-the-board warning.
Also, should anything similar come up as an issue moving forward, it's best not to quote and repost the original(s). All of it will be effectively scrubbed ASAP, including follow-up posts and quotes. This effectively resets the thread to the post before the one in question appeared, let's keep it that way.
Thanks.
Good call. What happened? A couple of posters, including His Highness, had a sense of humor malfunction. If you thought/think that was funny, I'm awfully glad I don't have your "sense of humour"

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love: Q&A request
|

I don't see a Q & A with Mike yielding any more tantalizing information than the Brian session. It's just not the format for deep revelations. It could be fun, sure. And Mike's answers will certainly be a bit longer. But, we'll probably get the same bits about the "cumulus nimbus," "Positivity," "alliteration," and the importance of meditation. I would be shocked if Mike chose this format to give us a well thought out analysis of what went wrong during the SMiLE sessions. He'll be saving that bit for his book.
I could be wrong, though. Stranger things have happened.
So far...Mike has stuck to a kind of set of talking points...whether it be back 15 years ago...or this past November when I saw him deliver a guest speaker presentation for the Rotary Club in Chatham Ontario. 2 of us from one of the 'local' radio stations 'manned' the mics and later led the Q and A session when the formal 'speech' was done. [Yes...He gives speeches. ] I think, and I've said it here before, that Mike really needs a PR firm to sit down with him, go over the FACTS, devise a 'way' of telling his TRUTHFUL story, and drop the perceived swagger, the misinformation and the recreated myths and mistruths. It could and likely would quickly enhance his image. It would make him a REAL 'go-to' guy for Q and A's and it would set him up for speaking engagements long after the original [versioned] Beach Boys have ceased to tour. I see that time approaching. I think he'd still enjoy getting out on the road, still be an appreciated centre of attention, still make some decent extra income and stiil be a Beach Boy. The whole presentation needs to be up-graded though. It's just not done well...or presented professionally. It's a bit of a disappointment. No wait. It's a LOT of a disappointment. REAL fans would come away feeling that they'd attended a half-assed representation. Mike is capable of SO much more but he needs someone with some KNOW-HOW to set it up...starting with the PR people. As it stands now? I doubt he'd be able to deliver anywhere near what the expectations would be here at SS for a Mike Love Q and A. He's NOT prepped properly to do it. [And we all know that the 'Party' album wasn't really what they 'said' it was...geez Mike...why would you keep THAT myth afloat? Credibility man. Credibility. It's important.] Brian's visit was pretty much predictable. He delivered exactly as he has in the past...dating back at least a dozen years. It's how he rolls. Mike's book? [checking to see where Andrew is...] The content better be entirely different than what it is he delivers in person at THIS point in time [November 9, 2014] or it'll be REALLY boring to read. Like...I couldn't put it down. Why? Because it kept putting itself down...everytime it slipped out of my hands as I passed out while trying to read it. Mike just needs some assistance. He's a veteran showman. Put together a show. Interesting take on it Add Some, I think you might be spot on in regards to PR and how he comes across. Get your point of view across effectively, honestly and professionally before father time catches up with you!

I have a hunch it's the other way around You'd be surprised. Probably not actually What I meant is that it would be more likely Mike's people would be happier about the hounding of Lorren than Brian's. Or maybe neither parties really care at all. I dunno, I guess all the nitpicking got to me

Thank you, Lorren. It's clear that your involvement with Brian was pivotal to a series of events that led to great achievements/efforts--and, most unfortunately, a series of difficult times that only got worse because the folks who tried to get him "help" in the 70s were either callous, indifferent, or way out of their depth. No one in their right mind can possibly blame you for what went down in the years after your friendship with Brian came to an end. And no one should now still hold the misguided notion that Brian's initial LSD trip is the trigger for his downfall.
Thank you, Lee Dempsey, for reading through this torturous thread--where several otherwise capable and intelligent folks have sullied their own reputations far more than they have succeeded at character assasination--and recognizing that despite his (occasionally very) rough edges, Lorren is someone who should be allowed to speak his mind without being constantly hounded by the so-called "fact police."
I think the most surprising aspect of this thread is the fact that no one (including yours truly) thought to ask Lorren about his observations concerning the odd "triangle" relationship between Brian, Marilyn and Diane. That is a dynamic that is worth exploring from several directions--unless, of course, it might offend those folk who want to wave away the possibility that a flawed marriage was in any way a factor in Brian's ongoing difficulties. The inner world of the BBs in these years was already a tangled web, to be sure, and we may never know all of the details that contributed to how things played out, no matter how obsessive any of us might become in pursuit of them.
Just a hunch but I think you will find that those closest to Brian, have a great deal MORE respect now for those that "hounded" Lorren. "Fact police" or as I refer to them "truth seekers" are welcome anytime in my world! I prefer the truth as opposed, to bloated, self-indulgent and factual incorrect fallacy. I have a hunch it's the other way around And Micha... I nearly fell off my chair when I read your post! That's not like you at all, he got you riled up didn't he?
