Gotta bump this...

my daughter seems to be turning into a certified Brian-ista. She asked me today 'why didn't Brian sing every song?' Me: 'Because some songs fit the others' voices better'. Jaymie: 'But daddy, it's Briaaaaaaan'.  Can't argue with that logic.

The other day I let her listen to the 1976 demos for the first time. Looks like 'Sherry She Needs Me' has replaced 'Isn't it Time'  and 'Hawaii' as her new favorite song. She did ask me if Brian had a cold...

I didn't know how to explain that one to her...

hehe  cute!   She likes Hawaii?  I like her style Smiley
129  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The misconceptions of the 1972-post output... on: March 06, 2013, 02:59:22 AM
Since I really do respect most peoples' opinions around here, I figure there must be something to all the 'Love You' love.  I just haven't figured it out yet.

When you've figured it out, tell me.

What finally hooked me on the album, after not getting it the first three or four times I listened (I'm slow on the uptake) was trying to play some of the songs myself. If you play an instrument, try just chording through some of those songs. You'll gain a whole new appreciation for them after that.

Oh, I absolutely appreciate the songs! On another thread I wrote: If I imagine "Let's Put Our Hearts Together" on Today, "The Night Was So Young" on Pet Sounds, "Love Is A Woman" on Sunflower... all instant classics. But the way they were recorded and how they sound puts me off to an extent that I'd like to puke out of rage. Unfortunately I haven't heard the piano demos, I'm sure I'd like them better.

Maybe the owls that were puking in AGD's bed had been listening to Love You?  Wink

I never said rockNroll evolved in the 70s. It evolved in the 60s and went as far as 67. 68 and so on went in different directions but I wouldn't say it evolved at all. Some may see it differently and that's ok, not everyone wanted to see it for what it was and that's prerogative.
[/quote]

On one hand you are saying some see it differently and that's okay, but then you turn around and nullify what you have just said stating that these people don't want to see if for what it is.  HUH?   You have had this opinion on a few threads now, well actually an opinion that you say is fact.

He's an incredibly humble guy, but I don't think he gives himself enough credit.  Isn't pretty much everything in life derivative?    I love what's been posted in this thread about Billy in the Soviet Union and the Grammy's.
132  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Just got barred from the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fanpage on Facebook on: March 01, 2013, 06:21:25 PM
Well....  In the end, she started the page and she can do whatever the hell she wants with it.  If people came on my FB page, whether it was a fan thing or not and I didn't like what they were saying, I would delete them.  I'm not saying what she does on there is right, but as I said it's her page and she can do what she wants.  (I assume it's her page!!)   I'm sure if Brian and crew don't like it (as apparently they haven't like posts on here before) then they will say somethign or whatever to her.

I love Billy Joel.   I have a book about Synethesia called "Tasting the Universe", and there is a chapter and interview with  Billy and how he has this ability.   He can see the colours of the different musical notes, and grapheme to colour.  He also said his music comes to him in his dreams.  It's a fascinating book.

You take it personally when someone discredits the music you like yet you are doing the very same thing.  It's personal preference. If people dislike the BB's I think it's their loss.

Yes, Wild Honey, it is their loss!

Hi filedepage Smiley

I don' think Dr V's post was aimed at you.   And I don't know if there is a divide amongst the ages here as Hypehat and RBDude are young(ish) and weren't in agreement with Kooks post about liking older music for nostalgias sake.   There are SOME songs I like for nostalgia alone, but they tend to be comedy-type songs like Incy whincy teenie weenie yellow pokda dot bikini, and that's because it reminds me when we sang it in a school concert.  But most of the music I like from earlier eras I like because it is EXCELLENT music, and the BB's are included in amongst, if not at the top of my list.  TBH I really don't care where or when music comes from, if I like it, I like it, if it's top 40 and I don't like it, I don't like it.  If it's from the guy down the road who makes his own songs but has never made a record in his life, If I like it, I like it.

Those ladies are groupie wanna-bes. They aren't interested in the music, they're interested in having "50 Shade of Grey" fantasies about Brian Wilson. They don't care if he's older or has been on drugs or whatever, they just think he's hot and want other people to post complete approval of their posted "kiss pix" of Bri.  Even if the pix are of Brian being completely wasted.  They're actually the ones who don't respect Brian, not the people they banned.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with that post.

Awesome!   I wonder what the next song was?  Their biggest song Mike says??

I do have this show (incomplete), which I found out yesterday, and he talks about I Get Around.

Thanks SV!  Smiley
139  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: after Holland, did it seem like they gave up? on: February 27, 2013, 08:35:19 PM

I think there is that old thing about the Wilson's being art and Mike being commerce. It's true in some ways, and I don't deny Mike's direction has often been wrongheaded after Endless Summer. Yet his performances over the last ten years often show how much he treasures a lot of the more arty stuff as well, especially on the reunion tour. He obviously also cared about his work during the Beach Boys first decade. Perhaps the Wilson's would have been able to go further without Mike after 1973, but I seriously doubt it. After Murry died none of them were as vigilant about being current. Drug use obviously played a big part in it, but I think Murry provided his songs with a dysfunctional, but very real motivation that was never replaced.

I don't quite agree that none of them were vigilant about being current after Murry died.  I think Dennis and Carl wanted to move with the times. Look at what Dennis did with POB. I remember reading somewhere that Brian said Dennis was the most up to date musically (paraphrasing).

That was nice of your brother Smiley   I must admit I don't know most of their music, but I just love Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.  Will have a listen to some more.  Did they sing Mr Sandman?  I love that too Smiley

142  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: My issue with the Occupy Monsanto protestors on: February 27, 2013, 04:17:06 AM
Hi all,

Interesting topic.  I know next to nothing about what goes on at a personal level in the US.  I do know that protesting can make positive impacts.  I have done a lot of protesting, mainly about stopping gas companies pillaging indigenous lands and animal welfare situations here in Aus and Asia. People generally want to do the right thing, but they have to know about it first and know alternatives etc, that's what protesting can do. In regards to buying practices being effective; I can use the example of cage versus free range eggs here in Aus.  Once people started to make a fuss about buying free range, the government passed that eggs had to be labelled cage or free range.  Of course most people started buying free range, even though they are more expensive, and the cage eggs were just left on the shelves.  Because of this Woolworths who are one of the two big grocery chains here has declared that they will ONLY sell free range eggs and have since moved on to meat and fish (no sow cages etc).  So I think it's a bit of both.  I am at university now studying animal rights law because I hope to make a difference at the legislation level.

I think the name is fine, really don't think that caused any image damage.  IMO it was the Baywatch lovin', crocodile rockin' 80's cheeze fest.

I really have to ask how you people heard hey hey you son of a bitch...I can MAYBE here you son but nothing else

It's the part that says "Yes I was made to love her",   It sounds like "you son of a bitch I love her"   I never heard it until someone on this board mentioned it,  now that's ALL I hear   Grin

You need to careful with that, though. Quite few here, as well as at other boards try to pass off their opinions as fact. Those do need to be called out and clarified.

Opinions and facts are different things though. If I'm stating an opinion it's different from me stating a fact.  If people are passing opinions as facts they would actually say that are stating a fact not an opinion,  and yes they should be called up on it.. and...  my head hurts :/
148  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: The Decline of Smiley Smile on: February 22, 2013, 09:41:58 AM
"But all opinions are not of equal value"

BULL.

My opinion or any one else's is just as valid as a mod or an "expert" or an established member.  An opinion does not state a fact to be argued or rebuked. It's what someone thinks or feels and they have every right to do so, regardless of whether it's right or wrong.
149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Misheard Vocals on: February 22, 2013, 09:21:14 AM
Admit it - you sang that, didn't you ? And now, the song will never, ever be the same.  Grin

Yup. Damn catchy too Smiley
150  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: The Decline of Smiley Smile on: February 22, 2013, 09:19:19 AM
I felt like a newbie complaining about an established member.
Yeah, I think that should feel like an awkward thing to do. I'd like to think there's a hierarchy to the board that allows the "established" members more sway with mods than "newbies". We have an equal chance to express our opinions, but all opinions are not of equal value. Does anyone on this board believe that there are lesser persons, or that human beings are not all of equal value? I doubt it. We all get to say our piece. The board would run better we all dutifully observed my imaginary hierarchy.  Shocked

1.Mods
2. Smart folks/authors/expert collectors /'established' members
3. Newbies/everyone else/me, etc.

I'm sorry but I don't understand one single thing you said
