Like how everyone was sucking up to Daro

Not everyone. In fact, Daro was very controversial from the start.

Correct. He's basically a human septic tank, cause he's full for sh*t

An Australian would say, he's a "seppo". Grin

Well actually seppo does mean septic tank but it's slang for yanks not full of sh*t. Although..... someone could be both :D

Hm, I'm a fan of reviving old threads.
Anyway.

I bought Goodbye Girl by David Gates with my dad.
3 buck vinyl... can't complain.

I'm listening to this song for like the 5th time and I feel like crying. It's so beautiful.

I can't listen to that song!  It is beautiful but I find it very melancholy also. There are a few songs that get me like that.. another one is Bright Eyes from Watership Down.. Sad

Anyone else seeing the guys in Perth? Gonna be the my first time seeing them, super excited!

Did you end up going to King's Park to see them?  I had a great time Smiley   What did you think?

[...] Sounds and looks like this film will make a lot of Beach Boys fans.
That's the impression I got from the Berlinale audience as well. Lots of guests who didn't know anything about BW/BBs aside from hits on the radio, who were fascinated by all the buzz eminating from the fans in the audience before the film started, who were transfixed by the story and Dano/Cusack during the film and who were excitedly chatting afterwards. I expect a considerable number of new registrations for SmileySmile, starting in June. Cheesy

Agreed. It'll also be fantastic to give this movie to family/friends and say "Hey, here's why I'm obsessed with this band" and hopefully they'll "get it" after watching the film.

Same here.  I actually want to take them with me, I'm pretty sure they will come. I look forward to talking to them about it afterwards, what impressions they have as non-fans.  Very, VERY excited about this movie.  June is too far away!!!!

Hey Mary,  St Pat's is a big day here, lots of Guinness and green beer and loads of drunkards singing with leprechaun hats on.  I'm not working this St Pat's so will be partaking in all of the above. I'm of Irish ancestry how could I not? Wink
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike and Bruce Tour 2015 on: March 13, 2015, 10:14:09 PM
I didn't want to start a whole new thread when THIS one exists...so...I'm resurrecting it...

I definitely wanted to keep this separate from the Brian Wilson tour thread too...but THIS will be a GREAT summer for *me* personally as Mike, Bruce, Jeff [and David I would guess], along with Scott who posts here from time to time will all be here August 8th for a concert outdoors at Tecumseh Park in the City of Chatham.  Without a doubt THIS is the biggest 'name' concert EVER for the immediate area.  Previously all the BIG shows affecting us here would have been held at venues in Detroit, Windsor, Sarnia, London or further down the 401 in Toronto.

The Chatham/Kent population sits at approximately 105,000 people.  When I moved here 6 months ago I was looking at a house right across the road from the park on William Street.  Instead I ended up about 25 minutes north of the venue.  [a better area for boating]  July 5...I'll make the drive to Detroit to catch Brian, Al and Blondie.  34 days later I'll get to do it again Beach Boys style.  Pinch me.  Brian announced his tour dates yesterday afternoon.  The Beach Boys show, which Mike said would happen last Novmber, was confirmed by the promoters this morning about 17 hours after Brian's fabulous news.  This is going to be the best summer I've had in decades.

Brian Wilson... ... ...The Beach Boys... ... ...Me.  All in one summer?   Cool Guy  Did I say "pinch me"?  Wink

Fantastic!  The chances of that happening for me down here are slim to none (boo).  Have a blast! Smiley
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Landy ever realize he did anything wrong? on: March 13, 2015, 09:21:06 AM

All Things Must Pass. Better than any Beatles album by a considerable mile.

Come on now.

I've never heard it yet

Come back and tell us if the album's better than anythig the Beatles ever released after you've... you know... actually listened to it.

Way to completely sidestep my entire point. I wasn't saying I thought it was better. I've just always noticed a really bizarre, insanely hyperbolic/disturbingly unquestioned cult of personality around the Beatles and I'm sick of it. It's bad enough the mainstream media simplifies the fascinating '60s music scene down to "Beatles, Beatles, Beatles...uh...27 club too" and casual music fans lap it up. But for the more hardcore music buffs, the kind who'd post on a forum like this, I'd expect more diversity in taste and nuance in their understanding of the California & Swinging London scenes. Surely if you dig deep enough, you can find other, criminally underappreciated albums and artists at least on par with the Fab Four? But for so many here to make such ridiculous assertions as I've seen it's kinda sad.

I mean, like whatever you wanna like. If you've honestly given the lesser known stuff like USA, Zappa, Love, King Crimson, Red Krayola, etc a chance and prefer Sgt Pepper that's fine. But don't feed me this crap that they alone created the hippie scene, are as influential as Shakespeare, are better than every other band combined, etc. I wouldn't mind so much if people stated these borderline insane opinions as fact if others at least called them out on it. But the myth of the greatest, unquestionably genius band ever is so pervasive that no one dares challenge it. Its just taken as a fact that the Beatles alone paved the way and everyone else was riding their coattails.

What you claimed wasn't nearly so ridiculous, but it's your dismissive attitude that I take offense to. It seems ATMP was a major critical and commercial success upon its release and in hindsight. It was made by the guy who wrote the best material on the later Beatles albums. Does the opinion "ATMP is better than any Beatles album" really warrant such a blunt, unsubstantiated, "Nope, you're wrong" kind of response? Would you have felt as comfortable shutting that opinion down, without backing your own up, had Mike's Beard said "ATMP is much better than any Jefferson Airplane/HP Lovecraft/Doors album? I'm not sure, but my guess is probably not.

Edit: After this post I'm not going to address the topic anymore here, not to get the last word in but because I realize I'm derailing this thread which is about a very serious topic and I feel this is an inappropriate place to do so. I've just been noticing lately how firmly entrenched Beatlemania is and I think it's high past time that a more balanced, realistic view of the counterculture music take place. Break free of the echo chamber, of the need for there to be a "best" listen to some of their lesser known contemporaries with an open mind, and consider the fact that just because there are "scholarly articles" written about them that doesn't necessarily mean the Beatles made the most progressive or "best" music in their day. Beach Boys fans of all people should know that the best music isn't always what hits #1 on the charts or is immediately recognized by the critics. Or do you think Surfin USA is objectively better than Pet Sounds because "it sold xyz records!" and "all the screaming girls!" ?

Like you said,  start a new thread about it.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's greatest lead vocal on: March 13, 2015, 08:12:36 AM
This is now two threads where the same sentiment has been posted. On the earlier one, it got called out by another board member - rightfully so - for trying to bring negativity into what could be a really good discussion

If you talk about me, you can write my name, unless you don't remember it was me who called Pinder out on that one.

In this thread however, it wasn't Pinder who brought the negativity, it was SMiLEBrian who did the totally unnecessary stab at Mike. He just regularly disses Mike without substantial reason, which annoys me just as much as it annoys Pinder. If you criticize Mike, you can do it like this:

I think he's being awfully condescending to his audiences and there are enough fans in the audience who would eat up those deep or deeply melancholy cuts and the others may even be converted and start talking like VDP at social gatherings. I think his audiences are perfectly capable of having "Surf's Up" or "Summer's Gone' tossed at them and will somehow not riot or ask for their money back as long as he also works in some car songs. A good song is a good song! He should loosen up a little, he's earned the right to play anything he wants by now and doesn't need to worry about people getting nachos during "Our Prayer."

That's substantial criticism that you can talk about.

Pinder is right in what he says, however it is unfortunate that he lets himself get goaded by the usual suspects and rambles on, that's so very useless. He's right on with this:

I do too, but not on Mike love's watch will it happen. It's all about the hits for Mike.

Why not contribute a Brian lead that you love to this thread?

Or is it all about dissing Mike?

That's all that was necessary to say.

I think one difference, and it's an important one, is that SB seems to dislike a member of The Beach Boys, namely Mike Love, and he posts negative comments about him, not about another poster on the board.

Unfortunately he does, dissing people who don't condemn Mike as "Kokocop" or "member of club Kokomo" and such nonsense, he didn't do it on this thread though. I don't think there's a double standard by the mods in terms of you can criticize Mike but not Brian, the difference is that Pinder's posts are more and longer and take up more space on the board. I'm with Pinder in this matter, I just wish he would take it all a bit cooler and not heat up so much. It really isn't worth that much rage.

Micha, you are hands down the most level headed, articulate poster on this board.. and English isn't even your native language.  Bravo! Smiley  (except that one time when you blew a gasket at Lorren Daro  LOL )

Man, that is a fantastic photo of Brian!  I can see his 20's self in this photo Smiley

One of the best pic's I've seen of him in I don't know how many years. I saw that image on itunes when I went there to preview NPP last week but could not figure out how to cut and paste it here. I'm sure there was some "photoshop" done but still.... if you lived through the "deer in the headlights Brian", seeing a picture like that is worth a lot more than a thousand words. The photographer nailed it.

Exactly. He looks comfortable, at ease.

17  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Kanye >:( on: March 04, 2015, 07:26:16 PM
How dare he go on stage whilst someone else is receiving an award. I don't care whether it was intended as a joke (though his comments afterwards don't support that), it's unprofessional and rude.  Let the person have their time in the sun.  Narcissistic windbag.

But if the roles were reversed and Beck would've done that joke (yes, it was a joke), nobody would complain. I'm not arguing what he said after the show or whether he's a "narcissistic windbag"* or not, but what happened when he went on stage I saw as a joke that got seriously blown out of proportion. People just love finding more and more reasons to hate him. Hey, we gotta take out our frustration on something/somebody, right?

*OK, since you asked, I think he's narcissistic. And arrogant. And thinks he's much better than he actually is. But I like his music and think his attitude and personal life are both in strong connection with his artistic decisions. Sort of like Rotten spitting on the fans in concerts, you know? It's not nice, but then there's the punk lifestyle and attitude for you. Loose that and you'll probably loose what made the music great in the first place. I think it's the same - it's Kanye's through-the-roof ego that made him even attempt something as ambitious as say 'Runaway', which is pretty much progressive hip-hop. I'm afraid that if he starts acting nice in interviews his music will start being safe and boring too and I don't want that.

If the so called joke was reversed nobody would complain!?  Oh hell yeah, they would!  You're on the SS board, you should know better than that!  Wink
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: interesting article: \ on: March 03, 2015, 04:17:36 PM
Mike probably didn't listen to the new song because it may actually upset him, 3 bandmates are on it and he's not (whether he chose that or not).  It would upset me and I'd be a bit envious/slighted.   Did Brian even ask Mike to be on it? If not, why not?  It looks like a snub.  IMO.   Also, I like all the BB's.  The bashing is boring, if you feel the hate so strongly about someone you don't even know, who has never done anything personally to you,  you have issues.

Taking issue with or questioning comments these guys make is not "hating" them.

As for whether Mike chose whether or not to be on the track, are we really still debating that? Why in the world would Brian invite Mike to sing on it? Mike has specifically said he didn't prefer the setup of just singing on tracks Brian writes without Mike (and/or with Joe Thomas). In the interview excerpt Howie Edelson posted, Mike seemed to only begrudgingly offer positive comments about even being offered the chance to add lyrics to songs already written by Brian and/or Joe.

Brian has indicated he would have done another BB album. So, if "The Right Time" had ended up on that album, it actually isn't terribly a stretch to say that Mike would have been singing on that very song.

My personal guess is that other than being a possibly peripheral, brief annoyance (in the same way that, say, Brian losing Foskett might be to Brian), I don't think Mike cares much about Brian's new album, or Brian's albums in general. Mike doesn't seem to be super interested in recording albums himself.

Did I say I was talking about you?  There is a of lot anger and what seems like hate (to me) directed at Mike about anything he says or does by some posters on here.  That is what I am referring to. Not the questioning of comments.

22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pop or Rock on: February 28, 2015, 03:41:29 AM
Billy Corgan's thoughts on Rock/Pop.

http://www.stereogum.com/1783648/billy-corgan-finally-breaks-his-legendary-silence-about-kanyes-grammys-intrusion/news/

I think Kurt had an incredible level of integrity and I often say that he would know what to do with the pop miasma we’re dealing with right now. Because rock needs to be free and independent; it doesn’t need to imitate pop to survive. That’s very telling and negatively impactful to the music business as a whole. The music business worked fine when you had pop stars and you had rock stars and everyone was doing their own thing.
Corgan also said rock should be waging war on pop music, pop is turning into pornography, and sales are down because everyone wants to chase trends and no one wants to be an iconic individual.

I've a lot of time for BC. Besides being a phenomenally talented and ridiculously prolific songwriter and musician (seriously, the amount of non-album SP tracks is mindblowing) he was once tremendously kind and thoughtful to me when I was struggling through some stuff.

To me rock and roll is pretty much anything rooted in the combo of drums, bass; lead & rhythm guitar. But yeah labelling isn't really worth it. There's too much crossover.

I agree with your last paragraph.   And.. you know Billy?  Nice he was able to help you out Smiley

if you're going to call people out on saying certain things, make sure those things were actually said, sir.

and your statement that "Brian was either at home doing nothing or being brainwashed by Landy" was not only ridiculous, but cruel and flippant. below the belt even.

Cruel and flippant? Give me a break. Your trying to start something that is not there because your logic fails. Brian was out of the picture and Carl and Alan were right there with Mike business as usual. You know damn well what I meant and your response was lame. Being a huge Beach Boy fan I'm a huge Brian fan. I've seen him live 5 times and the Beach Boys 20. And for the record, not one of the 20 Beach Boys shows I've seen was the Mike and Bruce version. Not one. I'm looking forward to NPP and especially the film.

When it comes to the Beach Boys I pride myself on keeping it in perspective. A really great band that has been great to be a huge fan of. I can reach for Sunflower, All Summer Long, or In Concert and will love them as much now as I did in the past till I'm gone.

What do guys like you pride yourself on concerning the Beach Boys?  Bitching about Mike Love? Thinking you know more about their personal lives and dealings than anyone should give a crap about?

Like I told Smile Brian ....it is sooooo old. But like OSD some people just won't quit.

it was a disrespectful comment and you know it. it's also a misrepresentation and a myth. as a Beach Boy/Brian fan you already know this. you make a sweeping and false comment regarding Brian's personal life, and then you try to call us out for thinking we know more about their personal lives and dealings than anyone should? rich indeed.

I don't bitch about Mike Love every chance I get. I'm not criticizing him on every other thread on this board. but this thread concerns Mike's very recent statements, which come off sounding bitter, defensive, insulting, and downright false to varying degrees. of course people are going to respond to that.

if you can't stand the heat, stay off the sand

You do bitch about Mike. A lot.  It's kind of mean too.  He posted your pic at his show with a "Thanks Bossaroo"  and now you post it and make fun of him that he did that. He was having a bit of fun and you go and do that?  That is high school bullying and plain nasty.
