Mike really said that?
It doesn't surprise me. I remember reading an interview where the interviewer mentioned owning a BB bootleg, and Mike's response was "You ass-hole, give me 20 dollars!"

EDIT: Here it is verbatim...  (bold is interviewer)

Now the million dollar question: Will Smile ever be released?

There was brilliant pieces of music but it's disjointed and fragmented and unfinished so I don't see any real venue for doing it. I don't see any real reason for it to come out other than certain collectors would like to hear some of those unfinished tapes. They probably have them anyway (uproarious laughter).

I'm not saying anything.

You lousy bastard, that'll be 20 dollars (laughs).

Yet another case of Mike trying to take financial credit for Brian's work .....  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Down here in Oz by 73/74 just about every Beach Boys album was out of print and not available at retail, the only Beach Boys product in store were cheapies such as the Pickwick and Axis labels. For a new generation of kids the In Concert album was a revelation, a great mix of new material and oldies - In Concert made the Beach Boys a contemporary band and not some oldies group from 10 years before. The In Concert album was very much the soundtrack to our summers during our latter years at secondary school, hanging at the beach, surfing, girls, getting cars and partying.

For me, via In Concert, I finally understood Heroes & Villians - I never could get into the 67 produced track - still struggle today and its was only through the Cantina vesion and the various boots that I began to understand that I really didn't like the production of H&V 67 single. I also to this day prefer the In Concert version of Don't Worry Baby over the single version, as great as the studio version is the live version just kicks arse!!

That said yes it would have been better if there had been some contemporary Dennis tracks on the album - and what was recorded for the album and today lies in the vaults is for me one of the holy grails of the Beach Boys vaults.  FREE THE LIVE TAPES!!

1. Rumour has it that the Tasty Brothers are no longer part of the band. Unconfirmed but if true probably not that big a surprise - rumours of this nature have been around a long time.

2. Brian is currently recording TLOS in LA and the sessions are being filmed.

EDIT: The freaking out, assumptions and general second guessing going on in this thread is becoming blueboardish in their nature- and that is what is really scary!! This is the Smiley Smile Board, descendent of the Smile Board the sensible, scholarly place to discuss Brian's music. Cool heads people - please.

The last time there was a rumor about anyone leaving the band BW posted on the Blueboard that it wasn't true, and that he loved those guys. There was no specific mention of Bob or Jim at that time.

And as another poster wrote, Bob and Jim were great people - and getting excellent musicians who are also great people isn't so easy to do.

If BW is indeed recording TLOS in LA it would appear he's doing it without the SS&H and (possibly) part of his band. IMHO, that does not bode well.

I don't see people "freaking out", I do see people who (like me) had high hopes and high interest in TLOS, etc who feel disillusioned and disappointed.

The rumours re the immanent departure of the Tasty Brothers go back to last year. I saw Brian and the band in January and remember thinking at the time that it might have been the last time seeing them in the band. So it's not a new rumour. Don't get me wrong Jim and Bob are great guys from the contact I have had with them but they are not crucial. Good luck to them with their futures if the rumours are true. Brian's band is a business and things like this happen in business.

When Brian played TLOS in Sydney in January he did so without the SS&H and they used local string players who rehearesed the day before the shows. They pulled it off well without screwing up the performance - they also played the shows without Nicky Wonder who was ill and didn't make the tour - again the they pulled it off without screwing up the performance. I see no reason to frett over band changes or the non appearence of the regular hired string section. Given your criteria for things not "boding well" for TLOS them the Australian TLOS shows should have been a disaster - they weren't - infact they were a critical success.

Still, if stressing over these things helps to get you through the day then power to you.

Me, I'm going surfing - its sunny, 3 to 4 foot and offshore - autumn in Sydney is such a wonderful place to be..........

So is this an accurate summation?

No TLOS will be released and Brian's touring band is being reorganized.

 Cry

No.

I've decided I'm not going to worry or stress over anything I can't control.

Over the past 10 years I've received more from Brian than I ever expected and I'm more than happy with that.

Brian and his People or the People and their Brian can do whatever they want. I saw TLOS with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears and I'm happy with that - if it never makes to record or CD then its just sad too bad.
533  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alleged TLOS demos... on: May 02, 2008, 12:43:46 AM
I recieved these recording a few weeks ago.My first impresion twas that it was a Love Song Suite to California with heavy Mt Vernon overtones.
I like the way it sound as is. No need to mess with it any more.IMHO

I reckon you should try having another listen - I believe you'll find its actually about the Wilson family, its relationaship with California (after all it did help create the image of California) and more importantly about Brian, his youth, his brothers and his redemption. Its far more than "a love song suite to California". Isolate the Californian songs (and narratives) from the rest and the songs then follow the timeline of the rest, the timeline is the key to the family/Brian story.

Tony Wales,

Sunny Down ol' Snuffy has finally found you!

Tony is THE biggest Australian Brian Wilson fan, y'all.

I bow down at your feet Tony, and pray that you remember me from the internets early days!

How life has changed for a BW fan since then!

I saw the Man perform Smile, so my life is complete.

Please say you remember me!

WOW! WOW! WOW!

Sunny Down 'ol Snuffy - how are you man??!! Ofcourse I remember you - the very, very, very early days of the BB/BW world on the internet - the old Cabinessence Board - when Mike Wheeler was still around. WOW!! bloody hell! WOW again!!

The 'ol Snuffy fella was the first trader I met back then, turned me onto some good stuff - Pet Sounds sampler, This Song Wants To Sleep With You Tonight and even a photocopied version of The Beach Boys and The Californian Myth.

What's the story man? Still in Oz? Perth was it? Email me: tonywales@optusnet.com.au

As for Oz biggest BW fan - nowhere near it - for unadulterated passion I'll nominate "The Professor" (AKA Lawrence Lavery) for technical knowledge MikeyJ is well up there (Dwight C might be an Aussie but he now lives in Germany), for frequent flyer points it has to be Robyne Wilson & RickD, for duration there are plenty, Bill & Kath, Alyn, Zac, Gordon, Chris Osbourn and heaps more. The BB/BW world in Oz is no longer the isolated little place it used to be - there are actually quite a few of us out there - the "new" internet community has started to meet up with the old "Beach Boys Australia" crew with the likes of Steve McParland - its all good stuff.

Gee Snuffy when Robyne I were putting the fans gathering together back in January I kept thinking I might hear from you once again - there was a time when it seemed that it was only you and I in Oz. Email me!

A wee bit late but Greg Swan has just put up a whole heap of photos of BW and band from the Sydney TLOS, PS & Hits shows, the fans get together plus some comments. That's moi with Brian signing my SMiLE vinyl  Grin. If you scroll down to the end of the blog there are some more comments from Greg re the January shows. Some things inbetween may test your tolerance ...  LOL

Plus hands up everybody who wants one of those K-Tel Record Selectors!!

537  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Setting the Record Straight, or revisionist history? on: April 23, 2008, 02:08:34 AM

I could sit down and listen to the Charles Manson album not knowing the Manson story and come away thinking the Manson was a really nice guy.

Ok, that's a very cheap shot, but since you brought it up:

No, I don't think you'd come away with that opinion. Charlie's voice and lyrics are enough to put anyone on edge even though there's nothing exactly threatening in his lyrics. But then again, it's impossible to know because we only know of Manson as a guy in prison for ordering the murders of innocent people. I certainly can't make the claim that I'm able to listen to "Never Learn Not To Love" without thinking immediatly of Manson. It's a pretty song, great production. Of course my thoughts regarding the song would be very different were I to have no idea that Charlie wrote it. See this is my point exactly!!! Manson's album has several good songs. Good lyrics. Good melodies. And he has an interesting voice. Should one be able to listen to his album and like it in spite of knowing all they know about Manson?....... Certainly!..... Why not?

Should one be able to love the Beach Boys and not pay any real attention to who's evil, who's innocent, who did what, when and where?...... Of course! If someone wants to let David Leaf and others color their opinions based upon 40+ year old recollections and argued upon occurances/opinions....... they are more than free to do so.

I said "I could" - not "I have", "I would" or even that "I would want to" and it doesn't matter if its Manson, Maddona or the Monkees, the point was that my post was as simplistic in its assumptions as were the previous ones. Whether we like it or not, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, The Bangles or whoever come with baggage that we all have to deal with - ignoring it will not make it go away.  Part of the charm of all these bands is that they come with the baggage which enhances the story. That baggage colours opinions and without opinions we would all be a bloody bland lot - kind of blueboardish - eeerrrrrrrrrrrhhhhhhh!!!!! (okay - so that might have actually been a cheap shot)...
538  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Setting the Record Straight, or revisionist history? on: April 23, 2008, 12:21:40 AM
I just look at it in the very simple manner that....... Mike has a right to his opinions, views, ideas, ect ect ect.... He was there, contributed greatly, has good points/bad points, just like anyone else in music. He knows Brian in a way that few others do. The guy has all the same rights as anyone else to be treated fairly.

Funny thing! I have a Beatles fanatic friend who I turned onto the Beach Boys. He knew absolutely NOTHING about their story and I purposfully kept him in the dark.  All he knew were the hits. So, I gave him all my Beach Boys stuff and he got really really into it. He loves EVERYTHING!!!! He didn't even know any of the Beach Boys names, other than Brian before I told him. He loves all the Beach Boys voices, loves Mike and all his contributions. Loves his lyrics, as well as all the other lyrics.... I'm glad I pulled this little experiment because it really lends credence to the opinion that people like David Leaf, Dominic Piore, and other writers really did damage Mike's reputation and music lover's ability to approach The Beach Boys from straight ahead, and not at some skewered angle.

You know, that's by far the most thoughtful, pointed post I think that's ever been made here. No-one ever thought of that one.

I could sit down and listen to the Charles Manson album not knowing the Manson story and come away thinking the Manson was a really nice guy.

Actually there is a soundboard recording of Surf's Up from 1972 from the Dutch TV show "Gran Gala Du Disque". I have this on the Journals Part 2 boot but it has a lot of hiss and almost drops out at one point - however - at some stage during the file sharing free for all from 5 or so years ago I did pick up a high quality recording - not quite In Concert or Carneige Hall 72 quality but not far off.

541  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Song or album that turned you onto The Beach Boys on: April 20, 2008, 02:35:51 PM
It started sometime in the mid 60's as a 10 year old or younger - I can remember listening to my transistor radio in bed of a night - the song was Wendy - the harmonies created some sort of chemical reaction in my body that exists to this day. Then in my early teens hanging out on the Aussie beaches I was naturally drawn to the Beach Boys hearing I Can Hear Music & H&V on the radio are stand out memories, I really got into the new albums - Surfs Up, C&TP and Holland - the In Concert album was the clincher - started to dig back through the albums and dicovered Today!, Pet Sounds and Wild Honey - there have been extended periods in my life where I have to hear the BB music eveyday - at least in some little way.

Does anybody know the origins of this footage and production?

The two Perth shows circulate entirely, audience recordings.

The GOK and GV tracks are actually from Sydney.

Not correct. Perth shows are soundboards. GOK & GV are not, I repeat, ARE NOT, from Sydney they are from the first Perth show 14-Mar-78. They have been incorrectly labelled on boots. There is no argument on this - it has been gone over a gazillion times on this and other boards. I was at the Sydney shows and those recordings ARE NOT Sydney, the Perth performances have been verified by people who were there as well.

544  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / International Record Store Day on: April 17, 2008, 01:09:59 PM
For all you vinyl junkies out there its INTERNATIONAL RECORD STORE DAY!!

Ah the joy of looking through the racks searching for that special something, holding that 12" slab of plastic and cardboard in your hands while anticipating the joyous sounds within. Made even better by the store you bought it in - posters & album covers on the wall, a semi famous person behind the counter ... and let's not forget the smell - a bit mustly, a bit dusty, a twang in insence in the air to mask the smell of dope - aaahhhhh!!

In Sydney for me it was Red Eye, Waterfront, Phantom or the Jolly Roger. In Melbourne it was the legendary Missing Link or Basement Discs. All around this planet we had our favourite stores - I always made sure I got to Go Boy in Redondo Beach when in LA. For some bizzare reason I had this habit of work trips for different companies taking me to Oshkosh, Wisonson and there was this little record store there that had a good Beach Boys collection - even ran into the guys from REM in the store (around the time of Fable - pre mega star days) and the whole store was little bigger than my bedroom.

So to celebrate IRSD here is a story from Melbourne, Australia (not Florida). Good to see the BB, BW & DW get heavily name checked!! Also great to see my favourite Oz band the Triffids make the list - but the Black Swan, really? Surely Born Sandy Devotional should top any Aussie list - ah the joys of elitist record store staff who select the esoteric just to drive you mad!!

In the interests of getting the info correct the venue for the March 8 & 9 shows should be the "Sidney Myer Music Bowl", not the "Meyer Music Bowl".

And what is with the March 10 MIU session for Matchpoint and Tomboy at Wally Heider's LA studio? The entire band, including Brian, were in Australia at the time.
546  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Museum on: April 09, 2008, 12:14:09 PM
Carl's Rickenbacker would look cool on display.

Actually, Carl's Rickenbacker is on display at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame & Museum in Cleveland...and it looks cool.

Thought it was Florida, that must be another guitar of Carl's

I'm pretty sure there is also one in the foyer of the Hard Rock Hotel in Bali.

Ofcource any Beach Boys museum should have a dark little room off to the side where patrons require a password to enter with a nod and a wink from the curator and that room will be full of every BB/BW boot ever released.

548  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Monterey Pop Festival...What If? on: March 31, 2008, 02:24:15 AM
In the parallel universe I have glimpsed the Beach Boys story is the same as reality up to two days before the festival is due to start, at that point in time a member of the band who is in tune with "commercial sensabilities" finds out that all bands appearing at the Monterey Pop Festival are doing so for free and he is not happy about this situation. He finds out that Ravi Shanker is the only artist being paid and so he demands to also be paid $3000 to appear. All the other bands tell him to f#&k off. At least two members of the Beach Boys side with him, two don't and want to play and the other member of the band has so many personal problems at that point in time he just defers his vote to his cousin. The Beach Boys do not play at Monterey, their spot is taken by Otis Reading and the Beach Boys story falls back in line with reality. The staus quo is maintained. . . .

. . . . gee I feel depressed . . . .

I just dug out my copy of the Montery Pop box set and checked through the comprehensive and impressive booklet. Points of note:

1. The Beach Boys were booked to headline the Saturday night but when they pulled out (at short notice) there spot was taken by Ottis Redding (and a legend was born). Source: John Phillips - Page 27

2. According to the credits the recording facilities used were the "Wally Heider Mobile Studios". Sound Engineers: Wally Heider and Bones Howe. Source "The Festival Staff - Remote Recording" - Page 87.

3. The notable MPF staff who were part of teh Beach Boys/SMiLE allumni were: Michael Vosse (Editorial Department - Assistant Editor), Derek Taylor (Public Relations - Director) & Brian Wilson (Board of Governors). "The Festival Staff" Page 87.

4. A check through the credited musicians on each of the bands on the box set shows that the bands were virtually self contained and a that there are no references to or credits for a "house band" - the credits on the box set are extensive - the only reference I can find to members of the Wrecking Crew are: Larry Knechtel on piano and Joe Osborn on bass in the Mamas and Papas band. Note: This does not preclude Wrecking Crew members from other acts not included on the box set.
