1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson's Rainbows played at Starbucks! on: Yesterday at 03:07:35 PM
Back in 2001 Starbucks released a Beach Boys compilation which at the time was regarded by some, including me, as one of the better Beach Boys compilations. It was called Summer Crush. Track list: I Can Hear Music, Don't Worry Baby, Sail On Sailor, GOK, Surf's Up, Wouldn't It Be Nice, Friends, Add Some Music, Sloop, Cool Cool Water, Disnet Girls, GV, Caroline No, Do It Again.

Anyone know via the book who wrote It's Natural and when? Very interesting tune.

Wilson/Sandler

I think that answers when as well Smiley

Actually no Brian on that one. Just David.

Oops! Me bad - read the production credit not the writing.

God bless Howie, Mark, Alan, Stephen, and everybody else involved. Gods among men. I'm almost in tears over some of this...

I've been having "what the f#*k" moments all day ... but that might be the wine ... or that might be the wine ... or that might be the wine ... any way its dark here and I can drink all the wine I want.

PS Mr Desper all the way back then you took it to another level ... thank you.

Many thanks to Alan, Mark, Howie, Stephen et al for their superb work and fighting for its release.

Amen to that!

I haven't been as thrilled about a retrospective Beach Boys release since those wonderful days of SOT boots - that moment of receiving a physical package shipped from Singapore, opening it and rushing to the CD player. This set really does pick up from where SOT boots left off ... 20 plus years and worth the wait to get it right. So excited about the next two years - So Tough, Holland and In Concert. Thrill me. Chill me. Complete me.

Thank gents!!

The box set of 5 cd’s is sitting in a record store 35 miles away… I’m gonna be there when they open their doors at 10AM eastern time here in the USA.

The Sunflower album was the one that got me started on the Beach Boys. And Surf’s Up was the first album I bought as a new release…

I’m frantic….

Settle petal ... just know that its everything you expect it to be and more ... now take a valium and chill ... or crack open a bottle of wine

Chapter 2: Awesome - so much new footage - what else are they sitting on? 3.34 footage of Carl singing Long Promised Road!!??

Less than 18 hours to go ... (here in Oz)

Right on Tony! - the advantages of living close to the International Date Line!!

Except that its 5.00am east coast Oz and my preordered itunes downloads haven't happened yet ... ggggrrrrr ... at least its up on Spotify

Personally I wouldn't be against an "In Concert" boxset in 2024  Cool

Concerts recorded '72 & '73 - released 19 November 1973. To fit copyright extension an In Concert box would happen in 2023.

From the September edition of Record Collector (jump to the last sentence):

"Alan Boyd: We’re hoping to do another box set next year which focuses on the Carl And The Passions and Holland era. There are some fascinating unreleased songs that aren’t really finished. There are some really interesting early versions — all the layers of the music within the fairytale [Holland bonus EP Mount Vernon And Fairway] is really interesting to dive into. I can’t wait to hear The Trader with just the track and the backing vocals. And we’d also like to include one of the complete Carnegie Hall shows that they did in late 1972."

Next year they will have to release the Carneigie Hall show from 1972 - its already out there in bootleg form and they won't want copyright lapse and on the grey market. They have the full set in the vaults. Releasing that show would be a good teaser for a major In Concert release in 2023.
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Live show coming? on: August 09, 2021, 03:07:30 PM
Fingers crossed that we do. They have the track record for a physical release followed by a digital release (1967 Sunshine sets). If I recall correctly when the You Tube teaser was released many (many many) months ago there was a sample from the Big Sur 1970 show so maybe that will finally see the light of day.

Shame with the delay as the group's music is usually more popular in summertime. Hopefully won't affect sales too much!

I wonder how much effect the summer theme would have on a set like this anyway, considering the target audiences who would buy the deluxe editions of the set are more invested and longer-term fans than those who don't know the band's background history. The music they were making in 1970-71 had nothing to do with their earlier "fun in the sun" vibes, in fact they were trying to reinvent themselves and be more progressive in their music and live shows more than trying to connect with the summertime vibe crowd. It would be nice to get as many new listeners, but you have to wonder how many fans who may own one or two of the greatest hits comps and that's it are going to go all out for the deluxe editions of this or any other set.

When all this was announced I thought it would be a holiday season release around November to get the gift-buying and "Prime Day" type of crowds into it too, but I guess the summer vibe does carry over into those decisions based on the band's name alone.

The summer vibe only goes so far for the rest of the planet ... down here it's bloody freezing today.

I can't believe we've got to page 4 and nobody's nominated Nick River's "Skeet Surfin'" ...

Its possible to put together a “Deluxe” In Concert using available soundboard recording (well mostly soundboard). Here’s my Deluxe In Concert with the source/comments in parenthesise. It’s a great listen and pretty reflective of many of the set lists from the time – Ladies and gentlemen for your listening pleasure:

1.   Sail On Sailor (In Concert ‘73)
2.   Sloop John B (In Concert ‘73
3.   The Trader (In Concert ’73)
4.   You Still Believe In Me (In Concert ’73)
5.   California Girls (In Concert ’73)
6.   Darlin’ (In Concert ’73)
7.   Marcella (In Concert ’73)
8.   Caroline No (In Concert ’73)
9.   Leaving This Town (In Concert ’73)
10.   Heroes & Villains (Endless Harmony Soundtrack / From rejected ’72 album)
11.   Funky Pretty (In Concert ’73)
12.   Long Promised Road (Endless Harmony Soundtrack / Carnegie Hall ’72)
13.   Surf’s Up (You Tube rip from Dutch radio broadcast ’72? / Slightly low sound quality but pretty good – does not spoil the audio flow)
14.   God Only Knows (Carnegie Hall ’72)
15.   California (Carnegie Hall ’72)
16.   Only With You (Carnegie Hall ’72)
17.   Let The Wind Blow (In Concert ’73)
18.   Help Me Rhonda (Made In California / New Jersey ’72- finally get Dennis on In Concert!)
19.   Surfer Girl (In Concert ’73)
20.   Wouldn’t It Be Nice (In Concert ’73)
21.   We Got Love (In Concert ’73)
22.   It’s About Time (Made In California / Chicago ’73)
23.   Wonderful/Don’t Worry Bill (Endless Harmony Soundtrack / Carnegie Hall ’72)
24.   Don’t Worry Baby (In Concert ’73)
25.   Surfin’ USA (In Concert ’73)
26.   Wild Honey (Made In California / New Jersey ’72)
27.   Good Vibrations (In Concert ’73)
28.   Fun Fun Fun (In Concert ’73)
29.   Bonus: I’ve Got A Friend (Dutch Radio Broadcast / Low Sound Quality)

Obviously after Feel Flow release an upgraded and official Surf’s Up will be welcome addition.

Here's a thought: The Carnegie Hall show from 1972 exists in full in the BB archive (as per Howie Edelson http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php?topic=7795.20 ) as such unless they do something with this show before the end of 2022 the "half a show" in wide bootleg circulation will fall into the hands of the grey market/bootleggers - of course "do something" could include a 10 or 15 second snippet of each tracks done as a teaser for something substantial in 2023.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is there an appreciation thread for The Beach Boys In Concert [1973] on: June 07, 2021, 03:46:18 PM
I believe it was this (I stand to be corrected)

Side A:
1. Wouldn't it Be Nice
2. Leaving This Town
3. Heroes and Villains
4. Marcella
5. You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone

Side B:
1. Let the Wind Blow
2. Do it Again
3. Wild Honey
4. Fun, Fun, Fun
5. Jumpin' Jack Flash

Its possible that Marcella, Let The Wind Blow, Wouldn't It Be Nice and Don't Worry Baby could be the same recordings as the 73 In Concert release as it used 72 recordings of those tracks.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is there an appreciation thread for The Beach Boys In Concert [1973] on: June 06, 2021, 02:49:33 PM
It will be interesting to see how the In Concert album is treated over the next 2 years. The album used a mix of tracks recorded in 72 & 73. I'd like to think we see a 72 copyright extension using the rejected single album disk plus other tracks recorded at the 72 shows then something more substantial in 2023 with the full In Concert covered - or maybe next year we get a couple of full shows, then a respectful In Concert release in 2023 - it will be interesting.

To take our own obsessions and to project them on to Brian ... what would be the ultimate present? It's now available (if it hadn't been available earlier) ... The Be My Baby Sessions bootleg

You can add Five Summer Stories a MacGillivary Freeman production from 1972. A surfing movie (arguably one of the greatest of all time) which had major cinema release in the USA and Australia and played through to 1975. Use of the Beach Boys tracks were given free of charge by the band and it went a long way to giving the band credibility in the 70s:

Feel Flows
Surfin Safari
Surfin
California Girls
Do It Again
Good Vibrations
Surfs Up
California
Sail On Sailor
The Trader
Long Promised Road

Wasn't he bass on the 1967 Thanksgiving tour ... as documented on the A Vocal Element boot?
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys live 1970 on: January 11, 2021, 12:24:19 PM
This set is rubbish - its just an ad hoc collection of booted material - the Big Sur set includes the dodgied up mix of soundboard and audience recordings. I have copies of this show in much better quality than these recordings. No way that this a Brother authorised set.
