26  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mike Love and Carl's last tour on: August 01, 2021, 11:05:04 AM
Recently I've read on the internet that Mike Love didn't want Carl Wilson play concerts with the Beach Boys while Carl was undergoing cancer treatment. I forgot where I read this and how credible this is, so delete this entry if it isn't.

However, if Mike Love indeed made such a statement then IMHO this shows what a callous, narcissistic person Mike Love really is. For me it is clear that he didn't want Carl on stage with the Beach Boys because as a gravely ill man Carl didn't fit the "Fun Fun Fun Happy Surf Mentality" anymore that Mike thought the Beach Boys should convey. Nothing wrong with that, as the Beach Boys are also about surfing and fun, but you don't tell a terminally ill band member to go home and quietly die there when it was Carl's wish to perform with the Beach Boys as long as he could, a band he had played in his whole life.

I'm glad that he was granted the wish to play with the band as long as he could by the rest of the Beach Boys.

Carl being responsible for Dennis's death (which I'm not sure the book says outright) is nonsense, but Brian's resentment toward Carl and mom Audree (at that time in Brian's life) sounds valid, in my opinion.

Why did he have resentment toward Carl and mom Audree?

Thank you very much for your input. From your comments it seems like he was offered help but he thought that he didn't have an alcohol problem and so denied their help.

I've read that at the end of his life Dennis was homeless, which I think is really sad. How did this happen? Did he never buy a house from his income from the Beach Boys? Why did he not rent an apartment from his Beach Boys royalties? And why did his brothers not help him, for example through renting a small apartment for him? I've also read that he was kicked out of the Beach Boys because of his alcohol addiction, which is understandable. However, why didn't Brian and Carl help him financially or help him beat his addiction, e.g. by finding a good treatment facility for him? After all Brian (cocaine) and Carl (cigarettes, which eventually killed him) should have known firsthand how difficult it can be to beat a drug addiction.

I love BW88 the way it is but what a Beach Boys album this could've made - with lead vocals by Alan, Carl and Mike this could've been a huge critical success for them.

I absolutely agree!

Thank you all for your excellent contributions. I will definitely check out some of Brian Wilson's solo albums.

So Brian's first solo album came out in 1988. Can anybody tell me why he put those songs out as a solo album and not for the Beach Boys? After all they might have needed some new songs, too. Or was Mike Love against new Beach Boys songs written by Brian? I've read that Mike Love preferred performing the older, surf themed songs.

What exactly happened in the Beach Boys after Carl's death 1998? What I'd like to know is:

- who of the remaining members (Al Jardine, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, Brian Wilson) decided that they didn't want to continue together anymore?

- what has Al Jardine been doing since 1998?

- when did Mike Love and Bruce Johnston decide that they would continue touring together? Why is it Mike and Bruce, and not Mike and Al?

- when did Brian start touring on his own? Are the albums he has recorded on his own any good and comparable to what the Beach Boys did?
34  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Cause of Brian's absences from touring? on: July 20, 2021, 02:18:35 AM
What I've noticed from watching concerts of the Beach Boys is that Brian often isn't there. What are the years that he was actually doing concerts with the Beach Boys?
These are the years that I remember:

1976 ('Brian is back')
1980 (Knebworth)
1986 (25 years anniversary at Hawaii)
1996 (Nashville)

I remember reading that he stopped touring in the 1960s because he had a nervous breakdown while touring and also because he wanted to spend more time in the studio composing. However, what was the cause of the other absences from the tours? Was it depression?
