I remember hearing this on AM radio as a kid and thinking it was just about the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard. The water, water is so big and bold that it makes the hair on my arms stand on end to this day. It is certainly the best song Alan Jardine ever wrote and one of the high points of the Seventies for The Boys, in my opinion.

Listening to Susie... er... is this a pattern? ie. The preview tracks coming from the least talented songwriters of the group (and definitely the least associated with the creative bonanza that the Sunflower/Surf's Up era represent)... what's next... a Bruce song?
that's harsh...I didn't say untrue, I said harsh

Great topic! I agree with most of what has been written so far. My two cents, setting aside the well-known stuff like Surf's Up:
-Surfer's Rule -Country Air -Looking At Tomorrow -Hold On Dear Brother -Little Bird -With Me Tonight -This Whole World -Where I Belong -All This Is That -Don't Talk (Put Your Hand On My Shoulder) -This Car of Mine -Time To Get Alone
of course I have a hundred more, but these are a few of the relatively unknown songs that deserve a second listen

1. This Whole World- Love at first sight. If it's not the perfect pop song, it will do until the perfect song arrives. 2. All I Wanna Do- So good it created a new genre. Amazing that more people don't know it. 3. Forever- so pretty. Soulful and sweet. 4. Slip On Through- Dennis shows off his vocal chops in one of the best lead vocals of the year. 5. Cool, Cool Water- quite lovely. Yes, better suited to Smile, but music this great shouldn't feel out of place anywhere 6. Deidre- some of Bruce's compositions tend to be a bit, ummm, flaccid. This one, like Disney Girls, finds him at his best. Beautiful melody, lovely orchestration. The "Baby, one, two, three" sequence is, like the "Deep and wide" on Time To Get Alone" one of the most memorable 5 seconds of vocals ever recorded. 7. It's About Time- Really catchy song burdened by silly lyrics. 8. Got To Know The Woman- a rousing, ribald throwback based on a boogie piano riff. Good song, hamstrung by the heavy-handed production. 9. Add Some Music To Your Day- a pleasant song with The Boys trading lead vocals. I tend to skip this one after 50 years. 10. Our Sweet Love- A sweet, forgettable little love song. Great Carl vocal, insipid lead guitar 11. Tears In The Morning- day-old coffee. Out of place on this album imo 12. At My Window- another throwaway. A cute chorus but overall a track to skip.

this was one of the first BB albums I ever owned, after Surf's Up. I bought it at age 12. Loved it then and, almost 50 years later, it is still one of my favorites. Nearly al the songs are excellent. The Smile-era songs represent the high water mark of our civilization, as far as I'm concerned. The two radio hits are pleasant, and Never Learn Not To Love is awesome. I didn't realize that it was a grab bag of assorted oddities until years later.
