51  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys channel is coming back to SiriusXM on: July 01, 2021, 01:43:21 PM
Glad to hear this is back! Here's what I heard.

Susie Cincinatti
Help Me, Rhonda
Let Him Run Wild (call-in request)
Surfer Girl (Live 50th Anniversary Tour, at first I thought that this one is mixed somewhat surprisingly well, you could pick out numerous voices in the harmony but then Brian is slightly and unnecessarily autotuned on the bridge)
Fun, Fun, Fun
Kona Coast (wasn't expecting to hear this one)
(David Marks commentary)
Catch a Wave
Yeah! (Bruce and Terry song, lol this is awful)
Honkin' Down the Highway (plenty of Al Jardine leads in this set)
Do You Wanna Dance?
Sail On, Sailor
The Surfer Moon
(Bruce Johnston commentary)
Still Surfin' (another one I definitely wasn't expecting to hear)
California Girls
(Brian Wilson commentary)
Hang On to Your Ego
Good Timin'
I Get Around
Good Vibrations (I think this was one of the Lei'd in Hawaii rehearsal versions)
Surf's Up (with an intro promoting the Feel Flows box set though didn't specify if this particular mix is from the box, it is the standard album version either way)
(David Marks commentary)
Rock and Roll Music
Maybe I Don't Know (I've always thought this '85 track was underrated)

Not a mask worn in sight. Did Mike get tested before performing? Did anyone in his band? Like for f***’s sake, politics aside, this is not safe!
Well Florida has been pretty good in dealing with corona as compared to New York and California where they are so strict on masks. Weird eh?

Well isn't that something. So why is California where we can see people walking alone on the beach and driving alone wearing masks, on huge lockdown still soaring then? Testing? No testing?

Because it's a huge population and it's not a total lockdown. Keeping stores and restaurants open and allowing people to eat indoors is not helping at all. I'm not taking the sides of any states or governors, they're all doing terribly right now. I live in New Jersey and we were doing great in May/June but then Murphy lifted restrictions and we're right back where we started. And I absolutely blame him for that. This isn't a partisan thing. Health experts were warning this would happen since it started and nobody listened to them.

Only 2 of the Gettin' In Over My Head tracks are playable on Spotify, for example. Is there some weird publishing issue??

The two available tracks were on the Playback Anthology compilation from a few years back. The album itself has been out of circulation for a long time now.

I still wonder why he never went the surgical route. Just read a book from a former lead singer of Paul Revere and the Raiders, he went for a transplant around 2001. Said it hurt like hell, had to wear a soft cap for several months - but Mike could do that and no one would be wiser. It's not a cheap procedure, but that shouldn't be a problem for Mike.

He's not against being photographed without a hat on - there are several hat-less photos in his autobiography - but that's offstage in private moments. At this point, I think he just sees the hats as part of his image.

Kinda like how Art Garfunkel would wear a curly wig on the Simon & Garfunkel reunion tours since that was part of his image, he has no problem being photographed bald otherwise.

Has systemic racism been accepted as fact? By some I guess.  By others it has been clearly debunked. Please have a look at Adam Carolla's experience with "white privilege".  Mocking a disabled person? It has been fact checked by many that it wasn't the case. Also remember Trump is still considers an anti-semite despite his Jewish family and moving the embassy to Jerusalem. Also blamed for building Obama's cages. Why bother getting the facts out when a narrative can be kept?

Adam Carolla is a has-been white comedian, he is not an authority on race in America. Speaking as a Jewish person who knows many other Jewish people, nobody I know gives a sh*t about the embassy in Jerusalem. In fact conflating American Jews with Israel is pretty anti-semitic to begin with. Plus, Trump has endorsed the Qanon conspiracy group multiple times recently and they are vile anti-semites. Being related to Jared Kushner doesn't automatically make Trump best friend to the Jews and didn't stop him from complaining that "they're only in it for themselves."
Anybody involved with the immigration cages deserves to be called out on it but most of the blame goes to ICE, a violent government organization who have been sexually assaulting their detainees and Trump has given them nothing but praise.

As a huge Beach Boys fan and a strong conservative centered around the importance of values, morals and ethics, I'm proud that Mike is playing the Trump sponsored concert.   For all my other musical 'heroes' that have supported the politics of hatred, divide, racism and suppression of freedoms (liberals), I'm glad that the Beach Boys band name is being represented on the right side of history.    Congrats to Mike.   Remember, the thoughts shared on these boards are not as widespread as you'd like to believe.   Americans in the vast majority of states, cities and counties elected Trump as our President because he stood for the political decisions/directions we so desired after being on the brink of a civil war with President Obama.   The seething anger of racism generated by that man's words and actions were unlike anything this country had saw, but the media and these boards rarely bothered to notice or report.

For fucks sake, you’re completely missing the point that they’re playing a concert for a crowd during a pandemic. I don’t give a sh*t about Mike’s politics or your politics, it doesn’t change that it’s stupid and dangerous and against CDC guidelines.

Hi Rocky.  No, I didn't miss that point.  I think its perfectly okay to play a concert during a 'pandemic' because I don't believe its a 'pandemic'.   Survival rates are over 99.9% and nearly half of the reported deaths are dying WITH COVID, not OF COVID.  And American numbers include all the states where liberal Governors placed COVID patients in nursing homes with those most susceptible!  I live near Lancaster, PA where this occurred.  It was truly heartbreaking.  The elderly were killed and then the numbers are now used on Biden ads as political fodder.   The numbers are completely overstated and the real truth is in overall deaths from year to year.   We all have family in the medical field and some in the undertaking field continually exposing death certificates where COVID was slapped on because of the financial incentives.  We also all have families with real examples of healthy people dying of COVID.  No doubt, the virus is real and dangerous, but its been totally blown out of proportion for government control which is making much worse scenarios than simply protecting those most vulnerable.  Luckily, Trump cut off travel to China early on.   Remember, the experts stated for years including this spring that masks do nothing.   Now, people are turning against each other because they bought into the hype that MY MASK PROTECTS YOU.   No, your mask is having more ill affects on you having to breathe your own 'exhaust' all day long.   We could publicize stories on a daily basis of heathly individuals dying from a variety of common illnesses.   This was an evil political opportunity.  For instance, cancer patients are in much higher numbers and always have been more susceptible to illnesses and we didn't care for them with COVID-like precautions??   And obviously, the media is outraged by Trump's rallies but has no problem with the racist protestors that rioted in our USA cities and streets most of the summer months???

Cool, I hope you get infected since you seem to think it's no big deal.

Screw Mike for dragging down the brand name once again.

There's no way that all the members of the band are in support of this. Mike just does this because he can, once again.

Huge, huge shocker with a massive narcissist loving another massive narcissist. What a surprise. Like flies on sh*t.

I am not a Trump supporter,  but what I do support is freedom of Speech. Celebrities use their platform all the time to make political statements. It is their right. Personally, if I love the art they produce, I could care less what politics or religion (TM) they push. Unless it's that Satanic death metal stuff. Too far for me. Lol!

Well said, right on.  The selective outrage over this is utterly ridiculous.

We are in a pandemic. Any musician, liberal or conservative, who is a part of an event like this deserves to be called out on it. And having seen photos of recent Trump events, I highly doubt the audience will be socially distant from each other.

This is more than politics. This also has to do with the fact that musicians shouldn’t be playing large events in front of audiences right now. And that Trump has continued to ignore health experts, that just a couple of weeks ago a bunch of his peers and staffers became seriously ill and he still thinks he should be able to hold rallies and let his fans take the risk and apparently Mike feels similarly. That’s just really irresponsible.

Ah, I guess I missed Wild Honey, glad it made the list!

Sunflower was on the original 2003 list but it’s never reappeared. The Smile Sessions box set was on the 2012 list but I think it’s appropriate Brian’s solo version is there in its place as that’s the true completed work.

This time around, it’s not a Beatles album keeping Pet Sounds from the top spot but Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. The Beach Boys Today! also made the list along with Brian Wilson Presents Smile (that’s a first for Brian to make it as a solo artist). I haven’t looked at the entire list so I don’t know if any other Beach Boys albums made it. I would have liked to at least see Summer Days and Wild Honey which are just as good as Today! in my opinion.

On the latest episode of Bruce Springsteen’s theme radio series, he did an End of Summer show. He opened it with “Caroline No” and closed it with “Think About the Days” and “Summer’s Gone”. He also played “Summer Turns to High” by R.E.M. which he introduced as their tribute to Brian Wilson. It’s available on demand if you’re a Sirius XM subscriber.

72  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Orange Crate Art 25 and other tidbits on: June 21, 2020, 04:21:37 PM
Hey so I logged on here thinking there'd be some discussion of the reissue of Orange Crate Art. Guess not though.

Well anyways, I listened to the title track and I think the remaster sounds nice, though I thought the original was just fine. I also listened to all three bonus vocal tracks and I'm glad to add all three to my collection. I think that having "Rhapsody In Blue" and "Love Is Here To Stay" from this era is cool. The arrangement on "Love Is Here To Stay" was a bit surprising for me I must say.

Here's the thing though, I thought there were a few interesting Brian tidbits from his essay in the booklet. First off, he says that they "talked about doing a tour to play the album but they never did." Who knows if it got anywhere beyond one of them bringing it up, but I thought that was neat.

But then in the same paragraph he mentions that he was "making the record with Andy Paley by then so I was getting pretty busy. I'd love to get back to those songs eventually, too." (emphasis mine, not italicized nor bolded in booklet)

That part piqued my interest. I wonder if maybe the Paley session material may be in the pipeline. Personally I think that if it was gonna be marketed as a new project, Brian should probably re-record most of the vocals, as I think he could do better on a bunch of them, at least on the ballads. But yeah, maybe we get a BW archive release? Or maybe seeing as there is another anniversary for The Beach Boys next year (or 2022), perhaps use the Paley material for what seemed to be it's original purpose, a new Beach Boys album. I mean who knows about any of this, it mighta just been a throw away line in the essay. I guess we'll see.
I would write off the comment about the Paley sessions as just a throwaway line. It was decided not to try to make an album with those recordings; instead, they went with Joe Thomas.

The thing is, the follow-up to Imagination ended up including several Paley tracks. Gettin' In Over My Head featured:

Gettin' in Over My Head
Soul Searchin' (remake with BW lead)
Saturday Morning in the City
Desert Drive

"Made in California" finally unveiled:

You're Still a Mystery
Soul Searchin' (Carl lead)

And the Brian Wilson Playback anthology doled out Some Sweet Day.

Those half-dozen songs are some of the very strongest from that batch of work. There are enough other songs to make an album, but some are rougher than others. The best-case scenario would be an archival release collecting everything, as well as a handful of new vocals or overdubs to finish some of things we never got to hear properly. (Hearing BW sing "God Did It" as opposed to Andy, for instance.) But it needs more of the material than what's still unreleased.

There’s also “This Song Wants to Sleep With You Tonight” from the Do It Again UK CD single and “This Could Be the Night” from the Nilsson tribute album is also a Paley co-production from that period. Both which are quite good.

Really to hear Brian cover a Four Freshmen song ("Our Love is Here to Stay")
.

I have to say I wasn't crazy about this version. It's hard to hear Brian in the mix and the instrumental arrangement is very 90s adult contemporary. I much prefer Brian's version from his Reimagines Gershwin album.
