Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sounds of Summer 6LP Announced

Some of the track selections for Discs 2 and 3 are surprising for sure, some of them just baffling.
It’s interesting to also note how much The Beach Boys compilations change over the years. The original companion disc to Sounds of Summer was The Warmth of the Sun but there are a lot of songs that appeared on that collection that are not included here.
Songs on The Warmth of the Sun not on expanded Sounds of Summer: Catch a Wave, Hawaii, Little Honda, 409, Then I Kissed Her, Please Let Me Wonder (that’s a glaring omission), The Little Girl I Once Knew, Break Away, Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Cool Cool Water, Don’t Go Near the Water, California Dreamin’
Personally I would at least trade Pom Pom Play Girl, Farmer’s Daughter, San Miguel, Everyone’s In Love With You, and Where I Belong for Please Let Me Wonder, The Little Girl I Once Knew, Break Away, Cool Cool Water, and California Dreamin’.

Phew, thought you guys were gone for good!
I was sad I couldn't mourn Ronnie Spector's passing with everyone here. A sad time in the music world and in the world of the Beach Boys too, as she was so hugely influential for them, Brian especially.

Thanks for your well thought out post, positivemusic.
I will say that of the concerts I've been to in the last five years, only at one have I seen Brian disinterested (Pet Sounds tour). The rest of the concerts he has been engaged with the audience, and seemingly happy to be there (especially the most recent one I went to right before the Covid shutdown). And those positive concerts sounded amazing - people all around us having an awesome time. I was fortunate enough to meet Brian backstage at one concert and he had the biggest smile on his face when he greeted me...He didn't at all seem disinterested to be there. I've seen Brian perform soundchecks where he is totally into directing the band through certain songs - he is in control, and it looks like he loves every minute of it.
That’s surprising to hear. The last two times I saw him, on the Christmas album tour in 2018 and The Zombies tour in 2019, he wasn’t engaged at all and it just made me sad. I’ve seen him many times and I decided then that I wouldn’t see him again. I don’t think it’s necessarily that he doesn’t want to be there, I’m not worried about him being exploited or anything like that, I trust that he’s in good hands. I think he’s just too old and tired at this point to give an engaging performance. I love the band too but if Brian is just going to sit motionless at the keyboard when he doesn’t have a lead vocal, it’s honestly just uncomfortable to watch.

There’s not a lot of film footage of The Beach Boys in the studio at their peak. I don’t think they ever allowed anyone to document them as extensively as The Beatles did during that time. The only thing I could think of that might be cool is the raw footage from the 1976 TV special if it exists, if there’s more of that concert for instance and more rehearsal and interview footage, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s enough for a full-length documentary there.

I think the chances of such a tour are very poor to begin with. As for The Honeys, they’ve been retired from performing for many years, at least Marilyn has, and it might also bring back painful memories with the way her and Brian’s marriage dissolved.

Not criticizing the set necessarily because it is fantastic but I wish the live selection on the Sunflower disc was just slightly different! Would have liked to see these two performances included instead of the two 15 Big Ones songs (which I know both dated back to the Sunflower sessions but still felt out of place to me). “Cool Cool Water” TV Performance 1971 https://youtu.be/rUcDojcRiFM“Forever” Central Park 1971 https://youtu.be/9hyp9b72jSEWas also surprised to see a live version of “Feel Flows” wasn’t include on the Surf’s Up disc. This is the only live version of it I’ve heard but if it’s the only one that exists, I can understand it being left off the set as Carl is definitely struggling with the vocals (probably safe to say he was not sober that night). The Charles Lloyd flute solo is killer though, it’s a shame if there’s not a better performance from that period in the vaults. https://youtu.be/W1If_VGaiF0

I’ve been saying for a long time that they should be equally billed, especially when it became apparent that Al was not just a special guest and a permanent fixture in the touring band. Maybe it’s because they’ve built up the name “Brian Wilson” to be a sort of brand at this point. Al seems to be a really humble guy and I give him a lot of credit for that. But they’ve been touring together for almost a decade now, I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be “Brian Wilson & Al Jardine” on the marquee. But like I said, Al is humble and it seems like he wants to be supportive of Brian above everything. I don’t think he particularly cares that much if he gets a decent amount of lead vocals spots, though I agree that I think he should be more heavily featured.

Here's the majority of "It's OK": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUsO5DLOHtk&list=FL0dftRhJ76dCyJthC4OcDRw&index=2Can't tell if it's supposed to be a Matt lead or if he's just taking it over because Brian's not singing. Kinda seems like the latter as the verse starts. I dunno. The band and Matt sound excellent. Brian looks completely blank. I'm sure he's less so when he's more engaged singing a lead. But at this stage, if they want to do gigs, I'm not opposed to it being more of a "Brian Wilson Band" concert and have Brian just come on stage for a set of songs where it's mostly his leads. The problem with that is with Brian’s mobility issues, it’s easier for him to not leave the stage. But yeah, it’s uncomfortable to watch when he just sits still like that. It’s a shame he doesn’t even seem to attempt to sing backing vocals that much anymore.

anyone see Bri & co last night? here's the reported setlist which looks great. has Brian done It's OK before?
Doesn’t look like it though it was done on the 50th anniversary tour but I think this is the first time Brian has sung it since then. There’s a video on Instagram of Brian singing “Add Some Music to Your Day”. He sounded good and sang all of the lead parts himself which he wasn’t able to do on a lot of the songs when I saw him in 2019.

By the way the BBs prerecorded a lot for that 86 special and I believe Brian’s vocals were fixed in post dubbing afterwards. I kind of like the song but the 86 special itself was pretty dreadful in my opinion. Really cheesy 80s-Joe Piscopo’s parts are really cringe inducing. Brian looks great but acts very stilted and ill at ease and the crowd looks like they were just there to be on TV rather than having any real love for the BBs
Oh god, the Piscopo stuff is awful. Also appearances from Gloria Loring and Belinda Carlisle who were clearly there to promote their own current singles rather than to actually pay tribute to the band. Just an extremely corny and cynical product of 1980s network TV. It does have its moments though, like Ray Charles singing “Sail On Sailor” and Carl singing “Heaven” in tribute to Dennis.

Covid has caused a lot of physical media manufacturing delays from my experience.
Yeah, warehouses in general haven't recovered. There's huge discrepancies between demand and supply right now. I work for Starbucks and we run out of product so quickly and when we get a supply shipment, we have no idea if we're going to get everything we need. And I think the combination of low pay, poor working conditions, and lack of good healthcare has caused a shortage in warehouse employees too.
