The way that "Ain't joshin'" in the backing vocals of Noble Surfer transforms the word "noble" into "no bull."

The backing vocal during Marilyn’s second vocal part in “Let’s Put Our Hearts Together.”  Never noticed it before, but it’s very cleverly woven in.

This is cool, although I think he accidentally wrote F instead of F#.

Not only in my mind, but I usually tend to sing "pretty things like insects and flowers".

Man, that takes me back!  I totally heard it that way the first time.

On the rare occasions when I get to a beach, I like to float out on the water and think about "'Til I Die."  But reality always invades my thoughts and my mind changes the lyric to "I'm a dork on the ocean."

Is there any Beach Boys lyric that your mind always wants to transform into something else?

7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: so Paul McCartney did munch on that celery! on: January 06, 2017, 05:04:01 AM
It's in C-man's Smile sessionography.  April 10, lead vocal overdub and vegetable chomping.  That's when Paul was in L.A.

However, until the Smile Vegetables was released on the 93 Good Vibrations box set, and later on the Smile Sessions, that Paul munching had never been heard - only the Smiley Smile version which did NOT have Paul on celery had been released.  So those who said Paul wasn't on Vegetables (the Smiley version) were correct.  unless C-man tells us that Brian dubbed the April 10th munching track on the June Smiley version?

Sorry, I'm new to C-man's sessionography.  What is it, an online resource or a book?

It's in the deluxe (or super deluxe) box set version of The SMiLE Sessions. Also - I think either Brian or Al has said apples may actually have been used, since they crunch louder. Or, maybe Darian said that about the 2004 version?

Cool, thanks.  If that's the version with the LP and 5 CD's, then I probably have it!

This could very well be the most famous piece of celery in the history of mankind.

Not a Doctor Who fan, are you?

LOL is it bad that I was thinking about it this morning, and wondering exactly how planned or impromptu this Paul munching the celery business was?  Was it like, "Hey man, Paul's here! We're recording Vega-Tables, we should get him on here somehow. I know! Celery! Someone go get some celery!" Or was it more like "Here I am on the day of recording Vega-Tables, and I've invited Paul McCartney because he's a vegetarian and I need a vegetarian around to crunch on celery for percussive reasons, so I'll just run in and grab some celery on my way in to the studio..."

Like this is the key to... something...

Definitely the former, since Paul didn't become a vegetarian until the Seventies.   Smokin

I guess a Brian Wilson solo musical moment could count for this, couldn't it?

That falsetto note he hits in the second chorus of "Cry."  No one else's falsetto could give me that same chill up the spine.

Does "The Beaks of Eagles" count as a talk track?
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / That beautiful whole-tone cluster on "In My Room" on: March 23, 2016, 06:00:51 AM
My favorite moment on the studio recording of "In My Room" is that whole-tone cluster they sing in the middle eight, on the syllable "sigh."  (Or in the German version, the syllable "Seuf.")

But in most live versions I've heard, the vocal arrangement has been altered to replace that cluster with a more conventional chord.  For example, the concert video promoting Imagination had the new arrangement.  The more recent concerts by Brian I've been to, or heard recordings of, also have the new arrangement.  Why was the whole-tone cluster taken out?  I'm sure Brian's current group is capable of singing it.

Could the arrangement have been changed as early as the Sixties because the Beach Boys had difficulty singing it live?  I'm recalling the early TV appearance shown in the American Band film where they're gathered next to a table or desk and singing "In My Room."  Brian is sitting down, and just before the middle eight he turns around to the guys as if to say "Okay, here goes."  But when they get to that word "sighing," the harmony goes a little sour.  And maybe I'm imagining things, but I think Brian's face registers disapproval right after that happens; a slight wince or shake of the head.

Does anyone know the history of when and/or why that vocal arrangement was changed?

14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did speeding up Caroline, No contribute to the single's lack of chart success? on: March 23, 2016, 05:40:32 AM
It's usually more obvious, at least to me, when a vocal has been slowed down than when it's been sped up.  For example, "With a Little Help from My Friends" on Rarities sounds nothing like Bruce until it's raised a half-step to proper speed.

Some Beatles tracks also give a good comparison:

The stereo version of "She's Leaving Home" was cut at the wrong speed, too slow, and Paul's voice sounds off, as if he had a cold.  But if you hear the mono version, which has the instrumental track sped up a half-step as it was meant to be, Paul's voice sounds natural.

On the same album, "When I'm Sixty-Four" is sped up including the vocal to make Paul sound younger, but he still sounds like Paul, though a bit brighter in tone.

I must admit, though, that Ringo's sped-up vocals on the mono "Don't Pass Me By" just sound ridiculous.

Another stray, random observation.

Landy is a terrible griller.

I mean, the guy can only grill one burger at a time?  Perhaps this was part of his way of controlling Brian.

But, one burger at a time, and no sides?  What a terrible host.

Man, I couldn't get over how child like Brian was in that scene. And I feel like that just was scratching the surface of that type of behavior.

Landy used to say he was "re-parenting" Brian, so that probably would have involved some degree of forcing him into a childlike role.

Just saw this over the weekend, with an audience of about 20.  It's not often I come out of a movie without a single criticism, but this is one of those times.

Random thoughts:

That recreation of the Sloop John B video was astounding.

Paul Giamatti managed to be as frightening and detestable as the real Landy without looking a thing like him.

Both of the leads clearly had studied Brian's mannerisms and were believable in the role.  Cusack's fidgeting and shuffling around on the sidewalk in the final sequence was fantastic.  It was easy to forget that Paul Dano wasn't Brian.

Good portrayal of the pressure Mike Love brought to bear on Brian, with the fact that the band members depended on his hit-making for their livelihood and Mike's disapproval gave Brian a lot of self-doubt.

The knowledge of Brian's history is so evident throughout the film.  I was impressed, for example, by the choice of "Day by Day" for that flashback sequence, since that was the first Four Freshmen record Brian had heard.

Don't think we heard any Phil Spector recordings in the film; could be wrong.  It would have been nice to hear strains of "Be My Baby" at some point, but maybe there was a rights problem.

I never knew about Gloria, but it's good that she got her due in the film.

The floating quote "I'm a genius too" was spoken by Murry during that infamous "Help Me Ronda" session, but when disembodied it applies equally to Landy, who was fond of claiming that Brian's return to action was "proof" that in his own field Landy was a genius.  (Not to mention the "I'm a f****n' genius" apparel he used to wear and the "Brains & Genius" partnership he named.)

Everything worked so well in this film.  I'm really happy that Brian was able to be involved and see its completion.

If it's the UK track sequence, I rank this album about as high as Pet Sounds.  The standard (US) album sequence falls a bit short to me.  Just a slight reordering and one addition, but it makes all the difference to my ear.

Until I read some of the posts on this thread, I really didn't know that Add Some Music to Your Day was much a polarizing song.

I don't dislike it, but to me the verses seem to run in place too long once they've made their fairly simple harmonic point, and the lyrics aren't clever enough to lift them out of the rut.  I really love the middle eight and the way it comes back in from there, up through "music is in my soul."

Also, I like how some of the backing vocals on the verses are reminiscent of "Only the Lonely."
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Sunflower on: May 03, 2015, 05:12:19 PM
With all due respect to Bruce, I tend to skip his tracks, although Tears In The Morning has some nice BVs. 'Add Some Music' is also a track that I have mixed feelings about; I love the middle 8 but the verses don't do anything for me. Highlights for me are All I Wanna Do, Our Sweet Love and Forever

Yeah, Carl's middle eight is definitely the saving grace of the song.
20  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / The Zombies on: March 07, 2015, 06:11:24 PM
Really into the Zombies lately, especially the "Odessey and Oracle" album (recorded 1967, released 1968).  Always hated that misspelling, but apparently the story goes that their cover artist misspelled "odyssey" and they didn't have time to make him correct it, so they changed the album title to conform.

"Hung Up on a Dream" is not my favorite track on the album by any stretch, but just listen to it and see if you agree that it would fit right in on the "Sunflower" album.

I'll just say this about the disco version of HCTN.................  chimp scream.

If you have trouble with that, you probably have trouble with the record.  If not, then it's probably OK.

Or I could be all wet.

(Disclaimer:  I've used a chimp scream in a song myself and find that sometimes it just goes there.)
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Sunflower on: January 22, 2015, 08:44:18 AM
This Whole World and Cool Cool Water are fantastic songs out of the album. The worst is At My Window. What a brutal song to listen to. Other then that 5/5 stars really solid listen
I don't know that I'd call it "brutal."  Maybe a bit weak... as if the album wanders off for a psychedelic bathroom break before getting back on course.  I don't actually know what I'm saying here...  But it's well produced and fits into the album like a quirky little dream sequence.

Anyone seen this web series?  The way they capture the look and feel of original Star Trek is astounding.

http://www.startrekcontinues.com/

It's worth some time to check out their episodes, and if you're as impressed as I am, you might consider supporting their Kickstarter campaign.  It's the Sixties again, man.   Afro
