Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What if the Beach Boys had fired Mike Love?

There is a part of me which feels that without Mike, Murry and any other "Villain" - the Beach Boys story would be a hell of a lot less interesting. The music drew me in, and then the slow discovery of all the drama and turmoil behind the scenes, the whole screwed up family dynamic and the corporate mindset vs cutting edge art/experimentation - that is what gave me some of the biggest "WTF" moments and drew me in even further. It's all incredibly Shakespearean, in a uniquely American way. Mike did some nice vocals, he wrote some decent lyrics and he has/had a legitimate compass for the "commercial", but no matter what cabbage one wishes to toss - it's Brian Wilson's music, production and vision which will always stand. He's an American treasure of the caliber of Twain, Ellington, and whomever else would rank in such a list. No one else in the Beach Boys ever came close. Dennis had the most prospects in that way.

Thing is, about all this stuff, is that it's too late now. What I mean is, I have some unhappiness over decisions the band made along the way - they made some of the worst decisions of any major band ever, but this wasn't all Mike Love's doing. They did what they did and became what they became and lost much of their credibility as a "current band" long ago - but they retained their "American icon/perennial favorite" status. So, whatever. Look, as depressing as this is to acknowledge - all these guys are gonna be gone in the not too distant future. So take what you can get and simply enjoy the music. The Mike/Bruce band (from all I have heard) provide great shows which make a lot of people happy, and Brian does the same. That's all that matters anymore. Anything else is over. Done. All the battles of the past are just that, and maybe the resolutions of those battles are not what I, you or some other bingo Dan would have liked - tough (so tough, even), doesn't matter anymore. It's gone, kaput. Enjoy what music you enjoy and don't listen to the rest. Remember the Alamo and don't leave your chewin' gum on the bed post overnight.

Your track listing is fine - any track listing of Smile music is fine. this is part of the point, or became part of the point, of Smile anyway - the fans playing with the various bits of music, working their own puzzle of it. I personally would love to see an official interactive release similar to the old Project Smile. Anyway, I look forward to giving it a listen when you have uploaded it.

No bass?
According to the notes in the description beneath the video, the lead singer was the bass player. I would suspect that they had to go sans bass on those songs where the singer would employ his James Brown moves. Maybe other songs he would play it.

That was awesome actually, what a weird parallel/unwitting progenitor to the Boys of Summer. The performance (not to mention the look) was certainly comparable to that of the BB's at the outset of their career, though I gotta say, that singer way out danced anything Love managed (sorry Mike). That kid was slipping and sliding all over the place, what a hoot! Makes me want to find out what became of them.

Hang in there, The_Holy_Bee. Your contributions are invaluable.
SenorPotatoHead, I find your ending with "Heroes And Villains" interesting. For a period of time, I was doing the same thing, again going back to my preoccupation with lyrics, but also because of the fade (I used "False Barnyard" fading over the sunset/horizon). Every time I hear "Heroes And Villains", it strikes me as a "review song". It's in the past tense. "I've been in this town so long", "I've been taken for lost and gone", "fell in love years ago", "but she's still dancing", "just see what you've done", "my children were raised", and on and on. But then he switches to present tense with "I'm fit with the stuff to ride in the rough". That's the line! After all that he went through - the trip to America, the Indians, the bullets, the railroad, and the elements - he survived, he's fit with the stuff, and now he's ready to ride off into the sunset!
My feeling on HV is similar. The whole "man at the opera" thing with SU (which Brian himself relays in GSHG) seems to naturally follow the opening invocation of "Prayer". The children's Song he discovers is the rest of the album, the "trip across America, east to west" (though keeping in mind that trips are not always linear, they often take tangents, excursions - be they physical/geographic trips, or trips of the mind/heart/soul, stimulated by substances or not). Generally speaking, though not exclusively, the other music on the album is more cartoony, more childlike. As the Sheriff theorizes, HV caps off the whole thing with a recap of the events just transpired over the course of the album. He's the same man from the opera (SU), but now he's found the way and all is well, and off into the sunset he goes.

One of my favorite Smile's, which I call Dumb Angel:
Our Prayer (w/laugh at end) Surf's Up (man at opera, trippin' out, literally, figuratively or both, is enlightened to the "children's song") Wonderful Child Is Father of The Man Do You Like Worms The Elements My Vega-Tables
Good Vibrations Wind Chimes Cabin Essence I'm In Great Shape (w/Barnyard) The Old Master Painter Heroes And Villains
*the Elements used "water chant" but since it's been revealed that this was recorded later, I might nab Mujan's idea and sub the Underwater chant in its place. My "air" was the WC piano tag, which I might keep - the separate WC track here is a hybrid of the Smile and Smiley versions. The "earth" segment is FN/Woodshop, which I might also keep - though I do like Mujan's thoughts on the "skits" being element related. Whether intended for that purpose or not, I think they could be utilized to great effect in such a psychedelic suite as this.
I love how creative this sequence is, especially swapping Heroes and Surf. Any place to stream or download? Thanks. SU as an opener even kind of works. but this is an old mix i have on cassette , however I ought to be able to re do it easy enough.

Probably among the minority, but I always liked the cover art, and wished that the poster insert was the full gatefold illustration instead of the plane picture.
Are the faces on the cover supposed to be the Beach Boys or are they just random faces? I've always thought two of them look vaguely like Brian and Al but if they were trying to make uncanny resemblances of the five guys, the artist failed at that. Yes, Mike, Brian and Al on the front and Carl and Dennis on the back. Then Brian again on the inside gatefold.

"Out doing it in my head" - thinking about it too much, obsessing over it, i.e. He's upset that she dumped him. Is this really that difficult to understand? Maybe ought to take this up with the songs lyricist, who at one time was Brian, but since the 90's has been Mike Love - so what about it, Love? What does this line mean? It's about drugs, isn't it? Acid alliteration!

No one in either major party seems remotely capable of inspiring any real support from me. In fact, without some serious changes to the political climate in this country, I struggle to imagine any party putting forward a candidate in the future who could get my real support, either. Unfortunately, the so-called "tell it like it is" candidates are even worse jokes than the candidates. Populism seems to attract the lowest common denominators, and this time around that includes a lot of xenophobia. That's no way to "make America great again..."
I guess I'll be investigating the third party candidates. Maybe I'll end up voting for the lesser of the two major evils, maybe I'll "waste my vote" on someone else. Whatever I do, I won't be thrilled, that's for sure.
There hasn't been a single candidate since i began voting at age 18 who I really liked - other than third party/outsider candidates. I like Bernie Sanders, however. Though I wish he had remained Independent and not joined the Dems. I suppose he thought he had to do that to even have a shot - seeing as third party candidates are pretty much excluded from participating in debates. Ultimately though, it isn't really about the one candidate - it's the whole system. Mr. Smith may go to Washington, but he will be swallowed by the corruption in short order.

Kept us safe, Jeb (with an exclamation point!)? George and Dick came in swinging their wrecking ball, but "safe" is not the word for how they either kept, or left us. Ol' Jeb hasn't a chance, not even the most wooden brained voter wants another Bush. So, which dogs in the race are folks out here rootin' on and supporting?
