151  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Pollin' The Beatles on: December 21, 2014, 06:24:46 AM
Introducing The Beatles was the first album I received (Christmas or birthday, can't recall which).  It was a bootleg/faux copy of the album (I've since discovered) and I loved it, still do.  Love the rough shod production, the immediacy of the performances, the mushy vocals (John and possibly Paul had colds).   It sounds like an album recorded in a day (in a good way) and it remains a special thing to me.

The American Rubber Soul was another gift back in the early eighties and it knocked me out.  Loved it then, and love it now.  prefer it to the UK version.  Only thing that might improve it is the inclusion of Nowhere man and If I Needed Someone.

Beatles VI is one of my favorite of the American albums too.  It's just an awesome collection of great mid-sixties pop.  I loved (and still do) how they could take "just okay" songs and turn them into more than that with their arrangements and choice of instrumentation.  Great vocals too, and with (at that time) hidden gems like Bad Boy and Yes It is on it, how could it be bad?

Meet the Beatles/Beatles Second Album where also favorites - they amazed me with how great their cover versions were.

Got to hear Pepper the first time via my older brothers copy of the originally released mono - and I have never heard it the same ever again.  Need to get me a copy of the original mono pressing (IMO nothing compares to it).

The White Album was brought home by my older bro as he wanted me to hear it - scared me, much of it did, but also amused me - it was weird too because already knowing about the Manson connection and the Paul is Dead thing - it was like an album of mysteries.

I remember looking at my brothers copy of Magical Mystery Tour when i was a very little kid - the cover made me think of Sid and Marty Krofft (or some such Saturday morning kids show).  I recall feeling creeped out by the cover too, those strange animal get ups struck me as oddly threatening somehow.

The Beatles are like comfort food to me.  My level of interest in them has waxed and waned over the years, but they are always something I return to eventually, and I find great comfort in them.

Someone mentioned this earlier, but he's RINGO!  RINGO of "JOHN, PAUL, GEORGE and...."   Like him or not (and if not, why not?  He was a great drummer for the Beatles and an iconic, laconic ambassador round the world for Rock and Roll!).   He sure as shootin' ought to be in on his own merits simply for who he is.  That being said, the Hall of Fame is an utter joke and WE ALL should also be inducted - every true blue fan of rock and roll music from all around the world has as much claim to being an inductee as anyone.   The rockers made the music - but WE BUY IT, LISTEN TO IT, GO TO CONCERTS (and often pay ridiculous sums of cash to do so) and WE OBSESS over it.   We ARE rock and roll.
"'Nuff said!"   3D
154  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carol Kaye on \ on: December 16, 2014, 12:52:22 PM
It is my, admittedly non-precise, opinion that because the majority of people out there still don't know that the band themselves played on many of their early recordings (the perception that the "wracking crow" played every session still dominates) it IS important to make sure that these credits get assigned rightly.   Assigning credit correctly is important.  It is.
I don't think this has to be a case of impoliteness or beating up on an old lady (and I doubt this is what the Doester is doing, least I hope not), it is simply just a push for credit where credit is actually due (or Doe, if you prefer  LOL)
I bet if someone else were claiming credit for playing bass/guitar on a session Ms. Kaye had actually played those instruments on - she herself would be crying foul too, so ya know....
155  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why Not Use Auto-Tune? on: December 11, 2014, 11:00:15 AM
My personal preference is for, not "perfection", but real, tangible, honest feeling.  I so very much would have preferred the "reunion" album to have been 5 old guys around a mic (with some some good, perhaps sparse backing instrumentation) doing as Murry once instructed and singing from their hearts to the best of whatever ability they retain.   That could have been a wonderfully vibrant and potent album, and one that, for me anyway, would have had much greater emotional impact.  I don't need "1965" again, I can have that by putting on Today! and Summer Days.   They can not sing as they used to, particularly Brian, but they have been singing together the bulk of their lives, and each were talented vocalists in their own ways and together they were incredible.   I would take a creaky oldster version of that any day over some auto tuned, overly processed fake presentation.
Would that be the "commercial" choice?  I suppose not, but then again, who's really to say?  I have heard aged groups of vocalists sing together quite beautifully and effectively.   I believe the remnants of the BB's could have done the same.  Just my opinion though.
156  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: December 1968 interview recording and Christmas greeting. on: December 05, 2014, 08:21:34 AM
Have I personally been asking for this thing?  No.  All I (foolish me) did was add my two cents from a "devils advocate" position of looking at it from how another might see it.
"Ignore list"?  By all means ignore me, I ignore most of you as well.  Wink
157  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Question about Pet Sounds on: November 30, 2014, 02:21:55 PM
All I'm saying is, you have teased a board of rabid, overzealous and sometimes quick to temper and snipe Beach Boy fans.   People get excited to hear anything "new" or "different".   If a tape circulated consisting of nothing but Brian farting, most here would want to take a listen.

158  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: December 1968 interview recording and Christmas greeting. on: November 30, 2014, 01:36:31 PM
Well if he's "selective" and/or asked not to share it - then perhaps he oughtn't create a thread about it.
159  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: December 1968 interview recording and Christmas greeting. on: November 30, 2014, 10:57:43 AM
To play Devils advocate a bit:  When someone starts a thread where they regale folks with this rare and mostly unheard interview they have, they oughtn't be surprised that people are gonna be bugging them to hear it.
160  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1991 Smile 2-LP - I WANT IT. on: November 20, 2014, 10:46:31 AM
That's crap.

I know someone who just bought it for $20, and the one I found for auction sold for $15.

....Plus the fact, when's the last time you've seen a bootleg sell for $1,000?

The highest I've ever seen was Vigotone "Smile" for $150-200.  (And I paid a fraction of that.)

Whatever. I don't see anyone jumping at your offer, tho, do you?
You want seriuos stuff, you have to make serious offers

My offer is 1 Mil....no!  1 BILLION dollars!!!

The second sides ("B" or "2") of the UK GHs have the best overall groupings, though there are some weak(er) links there:

Side B
Do You Wanna Dance?*
Help Me, Rhonda [US2]
California Girls [US2]
Barbara Ann [US2]
You're So Good to Me

Sloop John B*
God Only Knows [US3]

Side B
The Girl from New York City* (arguable, though--love it when the BBs rock out)
Girl Don't Tell Me [US3]
The Little Girl I Once Knew [US3]
Mountain of Love*
Here Today*
Wouldn't It Be Nice*
Good Vibrations [US3]

Side 2
Darlin'
Please Let Me Wonder [US2]
Let Him Run Wild [US2]
Country Air*
I Know There's an Answer*
Friends*
Heroes and Villains

You could make a great single disk out of these, though you'd still be missing some seminal tunes.

I'd run it chronologically:

a--Rhonda/Please Let Me Wonder/Girl From NYC/California Girls/Let Him Run Wild/Girl Don't Tell Me/The Little Girl I Once Knew
b--Wouldn't It Be Nice/Sloop John B./God Only Knows/I Know There's An Answer/Here Today/Good Vibrations/Heroes and Villains

A little Pet Sounds-heavy with the deep cuts, but can you argue the quality? It would be good to get the Wild Honey songs on (which could be done with a CD, of course) plus "Friends" and "Do It Again", but I think you'd have to ditch the chrono approach.

Side 3 of UK GH Vol 3 is really a nice sequence, even if it doesn't strictly make sense as a GH package. Was for a long time my "last side of the night."

Seeing Girl From NYC on there made me smile.  It doesn't get enough love.  To me it is one of their all time early classics.
That Barbara Ann though, what a drag.  First couple of times hearing it, okay, but after that - enough!  One of their all time early groaners IMO.
163  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The 60s Best Ofs... on: November 10, 2014, 11:38:43 AM
My older sister had the first two volumes (USA versions) and as a kid they were my initial introduction to any album by the group.  I distinctly remember thinking, "I know they have better stuff than a lot of this!  What the heck?" (because I'd heard many of their hit sides on the radio).
Capitol had zero respect for the band or their fans.  This is more than obvious by these "couldn't give a sh*t collections.
164  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smiley Smile done right? on: October 07, 2014, 05:12:52 PM
Makes sense to me, Smiley is the distillation of Brian's creative process during "The Smile Era" (which may or may not have been effected along the way by various things, like Beatles, Mike Love, Drugs, etc.).  It is Smile.

In an alternate universe Smiley was followed by an EP entitled Dumb Angel with the following track list:

A: Prayer
    Do You Like Worms

B: Cabin Essence
    Surf's Up

This is accompanied by an animated film, shown as part of a televised live in concert special, called Lei'd In Hawaii

Parents in Salt Lake City note the title with some disapproval but still feel the Beach Boys are more acceptable than the Beatles, but less so than the Osmonds.

Don't be messin' with my Smiley Smile!  Wind Chimes was only ever a pleasant little tune until Smiley Smile - THEN it was (and is) an effin' Masterpiece!
oh, and btw, you're under arrest!   police lol (where the heck is Surfer these days?)

Recently re-listened to a BBC interview John and Yoko gave on Dec 6th 1980.   Brought back the deep sadness of his murder, they both sounded so happy, exuberant and excited to be just where they were at that point and time.

170  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Everything really did come from Brian, think about it::: on: August 28, 2014, 06:34:28 PM
Brian did what all truly brilliant artists do - take their influences and create something new out of them.   It's like his combining of instruments to create new sounds, same principle.   Everyone is influenced by someone or something else before them.  The greats take those things and something new and unique to the table.  It's all one big tapestry.    Brian's thread is mighty strong, though perhaps mighty brief too.
171  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: rank the ten members of the band in order of preference and contributions on: August 25, 2014, 06:33:25 PM
This is completely personally speaking.

Brian - obviously.  No Brian, no Beach Boys.

Murry - love him or hate him, he was vital to their early success and climb.
May as well include Audrey (Audree?  Audry?) as without both Murry and she
there certainly would not be a Beach Boys.

Dennis - He is the Beach Boy.   He was Brian's closest sibling.  Whether they were close as children or not,
he undoubtedly had a great effect on who Brian was and became and the music he created.

Carl - same goes for Carl as Dennis, just perhaps in different ways.   A big part of what makes the Beach Boys the Beach Boys is the family aspect - it's their strength, their weakness, their beauty and their insanity.   It's the family thing that has always been a big fascination for me, and I'll warrant I'm not alone in that.

Al - yes, Al.  I like Al.  He's the only one of the original members who I have never really got pissed off at.
I like Al's voice and the fact that he can sound so much like Brian is cool.   He's got the best voice nowadays out of all of them.  I vote for Al!

Mike - okay, so here's the Lovester.    He obviously is key on a level akin to Dennis and Carl.  he sang with Brian as kids, he is blood relation and he wrote some very good lyrics.   He provided that signature nasal tone to their sound as well as a sensuous and meditative bass vocal.    And of course we all know that the Beatles wrote All You Need Is Love about him  Roll Eyes Cheesy   He has some cool hats.    He promotes TM, which these days especially can't be such a bad idea.  I like Love, he's just a butthead sometimes.   Aren't we all though?  ..........really?

David - though just a kid at the time, he had some real talent, as he went on to show, it would have been interesting to see how his presence would have effected things.   I'm glad he finally saw some due.

Bruce - for a fill in guy, he turned out pretty alright I'd guess.    I don't really know what to say about Bruce, he'd just Bruce.  Tongue

and that's where my list stops - no offense to any other members, but for me personally, the only vital people are those above (with maybe the addition of Britz).
172  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How were the Beach Boys recieved in the late 60s/70s? on: August 23, 2014, 05:41:12 PM
Smiley smile, wild honey, 20/20, sunflower ,surfs up and holland sound like rock to me, they sure werent country or bigband, ha/

Smiley Smile = weirdo pop music
Wild Honey = soul/R&B
Friends = lush pop music
20/20 = an amalgam of styles, essentially pop/rock
Sunflower = pop
Surf's Up = an amalgam of styles, essentially pop/rock
CATP-ST = earthy pop/rock songs (more rock)
Holland = earthy pop/rock songs (more pop)

Out of these seven albums that spanned six years, only two can really be considered rock and roll songs: "All I Want to Do" and "Got to Know the Woman", and neither were particularly good. If the UK was looking for rock and roll in the Beach Boys, they sure had to wade through a lot of other music to get to it.

They were never a rock band though.  not in the sense of the types of rock bands which inhabited the late 60's and early 70's.    But there was plenty of pop that was successful and well thought of  during these years - lighter sounds or whatever.   The music wasn't the problem, as has been stated, it was all perception and a seeming inability to over come that.   I also think Warners made a mistake in micro managing the groups albums.
173  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1966 Smile on: August 22, 2014, 08:22:36 AM
Had they just focused on getting it done, they could have released the album by the end of '66 - right at the point where GV was peaking at number #1.  They wouldn't have had to worry right away about H&V being a follow up hit - it could have been, initially, an album track.  The album could have been released with a world wide number 1 accompanying it.   They blew it with all the delays.
174  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Can someone explain how R&R Music was a Top 10 hit for 6 weeks? on: August 22, 2014, 08:18:44 AM
The mid 70's were, I believe, a time when people wanted to have fun, be reminded of the "good old days", etc.   It was the Bicentennial too, post Watergate/Nixon.   It was a fun, throwback song, and I think people were nostalgic for that, plus they missed Mike's nasal tones - really.
However, "It's OK" would have been a better choice as a lead single - it was an original, and a throwback to the "good old days" as well....
175  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feeling confused...who's the hero and who's the villain? on: August 20, 2014, 05:48:47 PM
We're all Heroes and Villains (look at AGD for cryin' out loud   LOL Razz Wink) - you, me, all of us and everyone else.   We may err on either side at times (or always) - but everyone is, and can be, both.
It's the way it is.
