I think I like the alternate take of Don't Worry Baby better than the released version, I like Brian's vocal nice and raw like that rather than with all the reverb and double tracking. Wow, his voice was beautiful back then.
I don't know if I like it better, but it's more powerful and raw as you said - he makes a very difficult vocal sound so incredibly easy.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the rehearsals - I dig the Smiley vibe in general, so the super cooled-out versions of "Surfer Girl", "California Girls", etc. are neat to listen to. The sloppiness can be a bit distracting at times, coming from a band who at that time was known for their precision (especially in the studio). But dammit if that isn't one of the most beautiful renditions of "Surfer Girl" that the band ever did.

I think you guys are spot-on. It's a very unique take on the oft-written about unrequited love topic, putting us right in that moment where this guy is about to confess his feelings for the girl he's been pining for. Having recently been in this particular situation myself, I appreciate how brilliant the lyrics are more than ever.
I've always been particularly struck by the "you'll never know what we've been through" line. He's been fantasizing about this hypothetical perfect relationship - he's already played it out in his head a million times, yet he knows that even though he's already in that place, she has no idea. It's a very difficult thing to have fantasies like that going on in your head, all the while knowing that the person you're fantasizing about is completely unaware, and probably doesn't share the same dreams.

Adamghost, I think you're right about Carl doing "what he could," and the best illustration is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55XBMJ_ZM58Before the embarrassing dreck from Mike, there is Two-and-a-half minutes of pure magic from Carl. That was an incredibly moving performance, I'd never seen it before. Only Mike would think that bringing cheerleaders on stage after that was anything resembling a good idea. As others have said though, I think by this point he had learned to pick his battles and keep the peace, so he knew there were trade-offs that had to be made to maintain the delicate equilibrium within the group.

Great topic. I love Smiley almost as much as Smile and Pet Sounds, so I'd miss just about everything on there in our hypothetical alternate universe. I'd probably miss "Little Pad", "With Me Tonight" and "Wind Chimes" the most though, the latter being (in my opinion anyways) far superior to its Smile counterpart. I wouldn't miss them enough to pass on a completed Smile though.

Really cool mix Tricycle Rider - I dig the Barnyard/Barnshine hybrid at the end. Placing IIGS in the middle is a bit jarring for me - I think it's because the instrumentation doesn't flow. Cantina flows with what comes before it and what goes after. Maybe that's why I've always preferred that mix to all others. It all works together, although I think that if edited correctly, there's a version out there with IIGS and Barnyard that works in a different way, like a series of vignettes rather than one cohesive statement. I don't really agree with the notion that such a version is more linear than the Cantina version.
I'd love to see that too Sheriff but sadly I doubt we ever will - Brian is probably sick to death of talking about Smile. The time to do that would have been when the box was released. It's too bad too, because as others have said he would probably remember quite a bit if he was in a relaxed setting with some of the people who were around him during the Smile era.

Has anybody put together an approximation edit of that description of the IIGS/H&V acetate yet that they can share?
Only in my head - music-wise though, just running through those sections what I'm "hearing" sounds really cool. Depending on where IIGS cuts off, the Ab7 segues perfectly into the tonic C# of Heroes and "My Children Were Raised" specifically. Great post about the tapes too guitarfool - I agree that a lot of priceless stuff was probably taped over, although the fact that new things are still being discovered this late in the game leads me to think (or hope, anyways) that there are still little tidbits like this to be discovered, whether through acetates, master tapes, whatever. Whomever is still out there holding onto rare material, the day is going to come where they (or their kin) are going to want to cash in. Given the sheer volume of material recorded during that time period, I think the probability is high that there are more acetates and tapes still in existence than anyone has heard. Not a "Surf's Up" 2nd movement or anything, but things along the lines of test edits and alternate mixes.

The singing was indeed pretty atrocious - modern singers seem to care more about showing off than singing with feeling (maybe they need a little Murry in their lives?) and really connecting with the song. It's frustrating to watch clearly talented singers do stuff like this. And for the love of god, why can nobody on this show seem to remember a few lyrics? I get that you're trying to learn an unfamiliar (and difficult) melody, arrangement, whatever, but is it really that hard to remember 2 freaking lines?

Did Brian take credit for too many J&D hits? That's what I was thinking. I mean, he co-wrote a few of them, but Berry and Christian and Altfield also had a big hand in them too! Yeah that was interesting, he made it sound like he was doing all the writing. Probably just came out the wrong way, but still. The whole thing was awesome to see. Does anyone else hear "old" Brian while listening to "young" Brian talk? Obviously you know it's the same guy, but it's so odd to me hearing the same speech patterns and style coming from a young clear voice.
