Thanks a bunch for the helpful info brianc and variable2!

The last two times I was there there was this great (mostly) cd place that had a ton o BB cd boots.  The main floor was new cds (they had almost all the sea of tunes single cds on the reacks as well as the box sets too behind the counter).  Then downstairs they had used cds and overstock. I managed to get several BB /BW rare cds downstairs a pretty good price.  Any idea of the place that I am talking about (I am probably not giving a great description though).

Thanks again.  Any other info is most welcome but maybe via a PM.  Thanks.

Sorry for the slightly off topic post, but I have been to New York a couple of times and there were some really great cd shops that had some "rare" BB / BW cds but my memory is pretty brutal.  I am going to New York soon and I would love it if some locals (or those with knowledge) could PM me and tell me the names of some great shops that carry "hard to find" Bb / BW cds.
Thanks!

Yes, loveandmercy I am from Calgary too.  Nice to hear from a fellow Calgarian BB fan on the board!  Still no luck anywhere in this city with POB, if you see it in your travels let me know!  I thought about downloading from itunes but I have already ordered several POB cds and I want the high quality audio.  I am not down with highly compressed mp3s, although I very seriously considered it as I was (am) desperate to hear it.  I might have to pick up the vinyl too!
Cheers,
Rich

Yeah Jon,
I hear what you are saying.  I am sad that I still don't have it yet, but I know that one of the many copies that I have ordered will arrive soon.  I just wanted to make sure that I got a deluxe package before they run out, and perhaps go to a version with less bells and whistles.

More importantly, it is a joy that Dennis is receiving a great amount of attention and that the POB / Bambu set was assembled with the same kind of love and care that Dennis himself put into making the music.  My thanks go out to all who helped make this happen.

I will be checking my mailbox and all of my local cd shops anxiously awaiting it's arrival.

Go Dennis!
231  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bad news re POB/Sony Germany on: June 23, 2008, 02:18:50 PM
Alright folks.  Deep Breath.  I want to be clear.
I am a huge Dennis Wilson fan (and all of the bb's really).  I bought POB on cd the day it came out back in the early 1990's.  In fact I buy just about every Beach Boys related cd the day it comes out because I am that big a fan (or geek which ever term you prefer).

I do feel that Sony has done a great job with this release in terms of putting together a great product.  Impressive track listing, great liner notes and general packaging.  I am also very excited that the trouble has been taken to do radio specials, promo posters, bookmarks, cd singles 5 track promo cds, websites, podcasts and EPKs.  Very cool.  Heck, I am thrilled because we were not sure all the legal hurdles could be handled to make a release like this happen.  And the fact that it has and that there are a bundle of beautiful bonus tracks and a ton of Bambu material all in glorious sound quality is a dream come true.  As an avid collector it is nice to have a bunch of neat promo stuff to hunt down that the record company cared enough to come up with.  It is clear that this release was put together with love by people who care about the quality of the finished product.

I enjoy your writing very much Jon (I have two copies of both the DW book and the DM book and will be buying the expanded DW book the day it is released).

But that brings me to my one and only gripe about this release (anyone who knows me will confirm that I am a glass half full - bright side of life kind of guy).

I STILL don't have the new POB / Bambu release yet.

Is it my fault?  No.  I did everything a reasonable person should do to get it on the day it was released.  I pre-ordered it from amazon OVER A MONTH AGO (two copies actually).  I'll happily forward you my amazon pre-order for those desiring proof.  I also pre-ordered it from my local HMV, and local PLAY too as well as a copy on ebay.  But like most geeks who are excited, on the 17th I wanted it in my hands immediately and realized that ordering on line via mail delivery can lead to delays.  So I checked the following stores on the day of release (and I live in a fairly large city of well over a million people in Canada):
HMV (several locations)
Play
Megatunes
Wal-mart
Best Buy
Future Shop
A & B Sound

No store in my city had it.  I was told a bunch of promising things though.  Most of these stores have it on order and that people have been asking about it.  That is great (I mean that sincerely) but I still don't have the cd and none of the stores could give me a definitive date that the cd would be in.

I am not freaking out or super mad about it, but I am frustrated (and rightfully so).  I suspect that the stores may get it in tomorrow (Tuesday June 24) as I have experience a one week delay in the past for certain releases.  I will continue to wait (as patiently as I can) and  I am certain that fairly soon my ebay copy, or my pre-ordered amazon copy (which I received an e-mail alerting me of the delay) will arrive.  Or that the the majority of the stores will have it in stock soon enough.  But it was unpleasant to have a bunch of people basking in the glory of the new release and feel left out - even though I made every effort to get it right away.

AGD, your comment bothered me because I did order several copies on line (Amazon and others).  And I have heard you complain before about product availability before.

Are there other countries or areas that do not have this release yet?  I suspect there are.  And in the interests of keeping Dennis' music as high in the charts as possible (or just even to keep the fans happy) it would be best if stores had the cd in stock.  I believe Mr. Stebbins and Mr. Doe would agree with that sentiment.  I feel pretty confident that anyone in my situation would feel similarly.

Oh well, like I said I don't think I will have to wait much longer and I am excited that when I do get it I know it will be worth the wait.  To tide me over I have been listening to the great new podcasts and my old POB cd and for good measure I bought the Criterion 2 dvd version of Two-Lane Blacktop.
232  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Slightly OT Seattle music stores on: May 06, 2008, 08:23:16 AM
Sorry for the slightly off topic post, but I was wondering if anyone who either lives in Seattle or is very familiar with Seattle and it's cd and record shops could give me a hand.

I am going to Seattle for a work conference (Wednesday - Saturday) this week and I have a bit of down time and I would like to hit the 3 BEST cd / Record shops.  Mostly I am looking for a used / new cd stores with a great selection of pop / rock / alternative stuff.  I love BW / BB but tons of other good pop too.  I prefer cds but if the selection is great I also buy vinyl occasionally.  I also tend to like used cd places as I am always looking for good prices and out of print stuff

I have been to Seattle twice (once to see Brian Wilson do Smile at the Paramount theatre in 2005, and once in 1994 or 1995 to see The Beautiful South at the backstage club.  So I am vaguely familiar with some areas of Seattle but I don't have that great a sense of direction.

Any other suggestions of cool things to do in Seattle would be most welcome.  Thanks.

Speaking of sax...

When did Richie Cannata start playing with the beach boys and when did he stop?

I know he also played with Billy Joel, how long did he play with his band?

I enjoy his playing quite a bit (saw him recently with Al Jardine's band and I also saw him with the beach boys a long time ago).  I also hear what the others are saying.  Too much sax soloing can be detrimental to a song.

Hey AGD!

I was just thinking that you really should have seen this gig.  It may have been you favorite BB related live show ever if for no other reason that they DIDN'T play Barbara Ann ;-)
LOL!!!

(I got the setlist from the stage and it indicated a couple of songs they didn’t play which were: Girl Don’t Tell Me, Rebel, Barbara Ann)  Al also mentioned the first night that they wanted to play more but they were already over there allotted amount of time.

Both night comments:

I managed to catch the soundcheck before the first show and enjoyed it very much.  They played bits and pieces of Hawaii, Cal Girls, DIA, CAW, ICHM, DWB, 409, Shut Down, LDC, IGA, Good Vibes, SOS, GOK, and Honkin DTH.  Sometimes they would play the whole song, other times just work the transitions between songs, sometimes they would just work instrumental bits, but the part of soundcheck I enjoyed best was when they were checking a few vocal parts.  Being treated to a few acapella renditions of certain parts of songs was heavenly.  Some great singers in the band for sure.  Billy and Al made most of the instructional comments and the band were pretty laid back and appeared to be having fun even while they were getting down to business.

The shows themselves:

Al’s guitar was quite loud in the mix the first night (it didn’t hurt that I was super close to his amp and his monitor).  This gave me the opportunity to really focus on his playing.  He was playing many lead lines that Carl used to do.  And he was playing them very well.  I was really impressed with his guitar work.  His solo on 409 (a song I don’t normally care too much for) was scorching. I wonder if he has been this good for the last 40 years and I just under-estimated or failed to fully appreciate his guitar abilities because Carl seemed to take the guitar focus.  At any rate Al is no guitar slouch.  He played much more lead guitar than the new guitar addition Jared Dalley (from Tripsitter - who was quite good but too low in the mix the first night).  I was expecting Al to play the white strat but he was playing a black telecaster.  Al was dressed in his white suit and wore white tennis shoes for anyone interested in the fashion side of things.

Al vocals were very, very strong; almost undiminished by time.  Having seen all of the surviving Beach Boys quite a few times in the last couple of years; I feel he is far and away the strongest vocally of the surviving Beach Boys.  He did flub a few lines and made a couple of light hearted memory jokes at his own expense.  Matt was smiling when Al flubbed a line as he did with California the first night (and Hawaii the second night).  Al said “I wrote the thing and I still can’t get the words right”.  It was a cute moment.

Matt Jardine voice is Al’s secret weapon for sure.  I have seen Jeffrey Foskett do the high parts and falsettos both with The Beach Boys and with Brian Wilson many times, I have also witnessed many live shows with Randell Kirsch and Adrian Baker on the high stuff with the Beach Boys.  Jeff, Randell, and Adrian all have EXCELLENT voices and sing those challenging parts very, very well, but as I told Matt after the show, I think his voice best captures the spirit of Brian’s original vocal parts.  He makes that tough transition from chest voice to falsetto seamless and also has a bit of the Whine that Brian had.  He is also a pleasure to watch as he clearly feels the music and enjoys singing so much.  His leads on Don’t Worry Baby, I Can Hear Music and Wouldn’t It Be Nice were sublime.

There were some nice remembrances of Carl.  At one point in the show Al said “singing these songs (they were about to launch into I Can Hear Music at the time) makes me think of Carl, he used to stand just to my left.  He looked over and paused for a moment and you could see he was genuinely missing him.  They also mentioned Carl (and dedicated the song) just before God Only Knows.  One interesting moment is on the first night Billy Hinsche mentioned that Don’t Worry Baby was originally a song about a soldier going off to war but that it was changed to a car song.  Al said it was the first he has heard of it.  The second night Billy mentioned it again and said that he talked to Jeff Foskett who said Brian had confirmed the story.

The best moment of both the shows for me was hearing Al do California (from the saga).  The banjo work by new member (these were his first shows) Jared Dalley was perfect.  The harmonies were incendiary.  Honkin Down the Highway was another highlight.  Al talked about his new cd that is still not finished (but very close).  He said it was great working with Brian again.  He also talked briefly about working with David Marks, America, Steve Miller, Neil Young, Glen Campbell.  Apparently Neil Young, Stephen Stills, David Crosby (who hasn’t recorded his part yet) and Matt Jardine will be on the new version (in a bit of a different style and key).  Matt’s wife recently had another baby so he recorded his part for California at his home.  Matt received the song via e-mail and he said it was pretty cool when he pulled up the parts on his computer and heard Neil Young doing his thing.  He recorded his part and then sent it to Al on cd to put on the master.

Sail On Sailor was very soulful and Bobby Figueroa and Billy Hinsche did a great job vocally with it.   I was front row center and a mere couple feet away from the performers so I could hear each of their individual monitors which was pretty cool.  Besides fantastic bass work, Ed Carter can really sing well.  Richie Cannata added a lot of flavor with his great sax and flute parts.  Adam held down a bunch of Mike Love parts and much of the lower end vocals with Billy Hinsche.

Talking with Al after the first show he said his favorite on his new cd is the title track and he said that you should hear Glen Campbell sing on it (I did get to hear it - but more about that later).  I met Al several times on the weekend and he was easy going, happy, and very happy to chat with fans.  By after Saturday’s show he was calling my father and I the (Canadian fan club).  It was pretty cool to go to the show with my dad (he went to the Saturday show only) as he took me to my first Beach Boys concert in 1987.  Though Al is the only “original” Beach Boy in the line-up it was interesting to note that back in 1987 when I saw the Beach Boys for the first time Billy Hinsche, Ed Carter, Bobby Figueroa were also on stage.  If you include Richie Cannata, that is a lot of veterans from the classic Beach Boys band that are backing up Al.  My dad also went with me to see Mike and Bruce last year at home in Calgary, Alberta, Canada together.  But we took the long trip to Vegas just to see Al. Worth every penny.  Although sometimes I think I would want a reunion of the surviving Beach Boys (My vote would be for a studio reunion and an album of all new material with maybe a one off t.v. special that could be helped out with some nice post production so the vocals are just right), I’m not sure a reunion tour would be the best for Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce, David etc.  Part of me thinks that the current 3 separate touring acts are maybe the best scenario.  I have loved concerts by all three acts at any rate, and will go see all of them again if I can.

I got my Smile slick that has already been signed in person by Smile artist Frank Holmes, Brian Wilson (Edmonton 2004), Mike Love and Bruce Johnston (Calgary 2006) signed by Al now.  This is my most treasured Beach Boys possession and it looks beautiful all framed up.

Big thanks go out to those who organized the meet and greet.  Thanks Trisha Campo and Paula Bondi – Springer!  It was great to have the opportunity and Al stuck around to meet and sign for everyone who was interested.

Trisha Campo was nice enough to give me an opportunity to hear some of the new Dennis Wilson 2 cd compilation.  The sound quality and mixes are unbelievable!  Carl’s vocal on Its Not Too Late just rings out clear as a bell – the whole track sounds better than I ever thought it could.  Under The Moonlight rocks harder than I could have possibly imagined.  She also played me a few full versions of songs from Al’s new cd.  Help Me Rhonda with Steve Miller is a very bluesy version with great vocals from Al and Steve as well as some blistering harmonica work.  Glen Campbell’s vocals on Postcard are great too.  I should mention that the tracks I heard from both cds may not be finalized versions though. Thanks Trisha – I didn’t mind being your servant or sharpie supplier either.

It was also a great pleasure to meet and spend some time with super fans Sue and Stu from across the pond.  I thought I spent a lot of money to see Al, I can only imagine what they spent.  Passing up the big Mike and Bruce shows in the UK must have been tough, but like myself, I think they needed to see Al live and his appearances are sadly harder to come by.  It is too bad Al can’t get more bookings with his current band as they certainly put on a great show.  Maybe they should give licenses out to both Mike and Bruce’s show AND to Al’s show to use the Beach Boys name.

Whatever…

I am focusing on the positive.  Thanks for a great show Al (and company)!  Can’t wait for the new cd and I hope to hear you sing again live soon!  I wish I could have stayed for Sunday night’s show too but sadly I have to go back to work to pay for my Beach Boys obsession.

Cheers,

236  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Al Jardine in Las Vegas this weekend ... and new website. on: April 01, 2008, 08:20:54 PM
I still have an extra FRONT ROW ticket to see Al Jardine in Las Vegas (Suncoast Casino) on Friday April 4th if anyone is interested.  (I'm just looking for face value).

Did anyone catch Al's new website with more samples from his new cd?  They apparently pulled it down to make a few adjustments and it is supposed to be back up in a couple of days.  I enjoyed the song previews quite a bit.  Brian sounds good vocally guesting on the song Drive.  David Marks lends some tasty guitar on the track too.  Three Beach Boys together on a recording.  Pretty darn close to a reunion on that one song.  Al's voice sounds great on the material and I am curious and excited to hear the whole thing.  There were some great pictures on the new site too, with a few words about the songs.  I hope it comes out soon.

I enjoyed hearing that track (even with the muddy sound).  Is that Brian singing the high AND low vocal meledy parts?  Who is playing the instruments?  Anyone???
238  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Band loses another band member. on: October 17, 2007, 03:34:58 PM
Wow, more line-up changes in Mike and Bruce's Beach Boys show!
Sometimes shake-ups are good though. It is sad about veteran Mike Kowalski departing, but I think the band will only benefit with Cowsill behind the kit. Drums (and vocals) are where he belongs and truly shines anyway. I also believe that Scott Totten will do a great job as "Musical Director". He has a great BB knowledge with the musical chops to back it up. In the many conversations I have had with Scott, not only have I found him to be a great guy, he also loves to include the lesser known goodies (Let Him Run Wild, Heroes and Villians etc), so perhaps he can encourage Mike Love to keep the setlist fresh (though they certainly have done a respectable job of that in the last few years). I also recall him posting on the Blueboard regarding the guitar intro to Wouldn't It Be Nice. From his post there I came away with an appreciation of how faithful he tries to be in reconstructing Brian Wilson's musical complexities.
I look forward to catching this new line-up whenever they are in the general neighborhood. In the last two years alone I have had the pleaure of seeing them five times, and they have always put on a very entertaining show.

...On the flipside with Chris out and Randell moving to bass, they are down a guitar player / vocalist. Perhaps someone could call Al Jardine (or David Marks for that matter) as I hear both of them have a few skills they may be able to offer ;-). Seriously though, I bet they band will continue to sound great and I wish Farmer all the best.
239  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Midnight's Another Day on: August 08, 2007, 07:53:36 AM
I agree with Andrew about the lower register vs chorus build and crest.  In this song Brian's slightly wobbly lower register vocal actually works great and supports the lyric quite nicely.  And then when those backing vocals crescendo behind the "All these people make me feel so ALONE" that is the moment that I get the chills - BIGTIME!!!  There is a lot of Brian in the backing vocals and he turns some respectable falsetto vocals in there.  And he certainly sounds emotionally invested here, which is just a joy to hear.
I have a lot of Scott Bennett's work in my cd collection (The Falling Walendas, The Dotted Line, Taylor Mills cd etc) and he is one talented fellow.  Besides being a phenomenally talented singer and multi-instrumentalist I always respected his writing abilities but this song's lyrics have elevated my opinion of him further.
240  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Live in Norway - the whole show online on: June 22, 2007, 12:27:11 PM

I realize that by watching/listening to the concert on a computer made Brian sound, well, not too good. But I think he would've sounded kinda that way even on a good night. Did you ever notice that when you hear a concert live in person, the vocals sound much better than when you later hear a recording of the concert, or when you watch it on film...
I agree Sheriff.  I know I made this point on another message board but I feel it is a valid one so apologies to those who read it already but I am throwing here too.  Brian's voice was not great (I have certainly witnessed him turn in better performances in person), but my biggest complaint was not Brian's voice but rather the MIX. The video and audio feed QUALITY were great but the person(s) who MIXED the performance for the TV/internet broadcast were NOT Brian's mix board people. They know when Brian is singing a backing vocal part and adjust him in the mix accordingly. When he is singing a lead vocal they like-wise adjust his vocal. Sometimes Brian's switches from a lead to a backing part several times in the span of one song. Brian's songs are very complex vocally and mixing one of his shows or a Mike and Bruce BB show is very tough work. The songs deserve better treatment than they received here. Mixing is a fine art form and the person responsible for this mix just assumed that Brian's vocals should be upfront (and too much up front) ALL the time even if the part he is singing was supposed to be part of a backing cluster chord harmony. Even if Brian was spot on vocally (which he wasn't at many times) with this mix it still would have sounded wrong and out of place. No knowledge of the songs and performers parts here. No proper blending at all. Though Brian turned in a sub par performance vocally, I did enjoy Brian's vocal on a few songs (Heroes and Villains was pretty darn good).

Off topic I just bought tickets to go and see Brian on August 9 and 10th in British Columbia, Canada. Front row center and 2nd row center. Still NO mention of these shows on Brian's own board or his show in Reno on the 11th. Crazy stuff.
241  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Zombies in concert (review) on: March 15, 2007, 08:26:10 AM
Hey Heywood,
Yeah the concert snuck up on me.  If my parents hadn't let me know that they were going the DAY before the show I would have missed it.  It was fun going to see the show with my parents (I'm 33 and my parents are 58 and 59).  My dad got me into the Zombies, I can remember singing She's Not There with my dad in the car on the early 1980's.

Not sure about where to find their concert dates but at the concert Rod Argent said that they were getting back together with the rest of the surviving Zombies and playing the whole Odyssey and Oracle album in London (and possibly more) for the 40th Anniversary.  I would fork out big coin for that.  At the concert the five O&O tracks were definitely the highlight.  A Rose for Emily was done with just Rod on piano, Colin singing lead and Rod and Jim doing harmonies (the others left the stage).  Colin struggles just a bit with the high notes but the sparse beautiful but fragile delivery of the haunting song just about made me cry (maybe it did but I wouldn't want to seem un-manly).  Care of cell 44 sounds less angelic live but I agree it is sooooo underrated.  And just watching the beginning of Time of the Season with that killer bass line and the band clapping and "ahhhing" into the mic got everyone on its feet before the lyrics started.
great stuff...
242  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / The Zombies in concert (review) on: March 14, 2007, 01:11:13 PM
I saw the Zombies in concert March 9th, 2007 here in Calgary.  The venue was a bit weird - Frank Sisson's Silver dollar casino and bowling alley in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  Great show, well worth the $30.  I got the set list from the stage, autographs (both my Odyssey and Oracle cd as well as the bands new 2 cd live set) and perhaps a photo (if it turns out).  Only two of band are original Zombies but it is the two most important ones (IMHO) - Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent.  I am happy to report that Colin Blunstone's voice which is/was one of the Zombie biggest selling features is still a powerful instrument.  It sounded great and retained most of the breathy boyish tenor of the original recordings. Rod Argent was also in great voice but it was his mad scientist keyboard skills that grab the most attention.  The man can play.  The rest of the band was top drawer too.  The were loose and in very good spirits.  They didn't follow their set list and made choices to suit the moment.  Jim Rodford on bass and bvs who was the band Argent's bass man as well.  His son Steve Rodford played the drums.  Keith Airey handled guitar duties as well as bvs.  The song selection had alot of solo material as well as Argent stuff mixed in.  I could have used a bit more early Zombies material or more from Odyssey and Oracle but that is only a minor complaint.  The highlight for me was the 5 songs from Odyssey And Oracle.  That album is in the same league as Pet Sounds.  I like it a fair bit better than Love's Forever Changes anyway.  Go check them out if they are in your area.  I don't think you would be disappointed.  The set list (what they actually played not what was written on the set list):
1. Sticks and Stones
2. Can't Nobody Love You
3. Mystified
4. What Becomes of the Broken Hearted
5. I Love You
6. She's Coming Home
7. Keep On Rolling
8. Hold Your Head Up
Intermission
second set
1. As Far As I Can See
2. Care Of Cell 44
3. Beechwood Park
4. This Will Be Our Year
5. A Rose For Emily (My favourite of the night)
6. Time Of The Season
7. Misty Roses
8. Going Out Of My Head
9. Indication
10. Tell Her No
11. She's Not There
Encore
12. God Gave Rock n' Roll To You
13. Summertime
Any other Zombies fans out there?

This is the reason I am excited to pick this up.  I loved the stereo mixes given to us on Endless Harmony cd and the Hawthorne cds.  I can't wait to hear these.  Especially Let Him Run Wild.  Mark if you read this - thanks for the great work.  I love the original mono mixes but it is great to hear these songs opened up in stereo.  A new way to hear an old friend!
