This would be awesome as I live 10 minutes from the venue but I will be in Ontario for a wedding.  Oh well,  I still have 3 CA to look forward to.

Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Reunion Concert - Greek Theatre Berkeley, California - June 1, 2012

I have an extra pair of tickets to the Greek Theatre Berkeley show that I would like to get rid of.  No scalping here, just looking for face value and a good home for these tickets.

$100.00 per ticket and the tickets are in Section 9, Row 15, Seats 17, 18.

These are hard tickets, and not home-printed e-tickets.

E-mail me if interested.

Thanks,

Looking forward to the book Mark!  Pre-ordered two copies.  As a fellow Canadian, I would love to check out the Canadian launch events, but I am too far west (Calgary). Hope to be reading it in California when I go travel to see this band I kinda like...
Good luck with the launch!

Sounds good!  It makes me want to hear more.  I really like Al's vocals - and I hope he gets a bunch of leads on the new BB album.  I'm so looking forward to hearing them sing together again.
131  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Nassau 1974 vocal credits? on: March 22, 2012, 09:54:57 AM
Which are your faves Mikie?  I'm going to pull this one off the shelf and listen again...
I'm all in favour of the Beach Boys releasing early to mid 1970's live stuff.  Give me a 5 cd box set and I'll buy several...
132  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New album info (as it rolls out...) on: March 21, 2012, 07:01:40 PM
While I, too, would prefer new material for the new BB album, it makes me very happy to see Matt Jardine doing the high parts here.  I feel Matt comes the closest to the feel of Brian's high parts.  I know there has been talk (some unpleasant) regarding Jeffrey Foskett, but I still like his vocals (Thru My Window is one of the best BB flavoured albums and if you haven't heard it, it is very much worth your time).  But in my semi-celebrity mud wrestling match between Foskett, Kirsch, Baker, and Matt J for the coveted prize of delivering the high parts at the reunion gig I would give the nod to Matt. I have much respect for all of those singers though as those are very tough parts and hard shoes to fill.  I'd love to see Matt Jardine throw in a few high parts for the album or reunion tour.  He has a bit of that whinge that made Brian's parts ooze with a good kind of yearning.  Maybe that's just me though...
133  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Piano Playing during the 2012 Tour. on: March 16, 2012, 06:17:13 PM
I'm with Marcellahasdirtyfeet here.  Though I have always appreciated the boys' instrumental contributions, it is far more important that their live vocal work be the focus IMHO.  Having said that, the last few Brian shows I have seen in the past three years have included more of his quite audible piano work and that has been enjoyable.  But I would rather the complete focus be on their harmonies as that is, for me, what makes the Beach Boys so unique.  Nobody sings and sounds like the Beach Boys, and even with the huge loss of Carl and Dennis, I am still hoping to hear a bit of that magic in the vocal blend.  Only exception being Mr. Marks.  I want to see David tear it up on the guitar as he really has the chops.  Bruce is very skilled on the keys too, but he hasn't shown much interest in showing off those skills in the last couple of decades.

Hmmm, I am rambling...

Really, with that gigantic band of killer players, let the Brian, Al, Bruce and Mike do what they do best - deliver harmonies that make grown men cry.  I can't wait!
134  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Vaea (Vy-Ya) King Harvest on: March 01, 2012, 07:12:29 PM
I'd love to hear Vy-Ya.  But would really love to hear All Life Is One.  Billy Cowsill and Brian Carl, Mike and Al.  That is five of my very favorite singers all on one track.  Please Maybe someone could help me...

Expensive yes Urbanite.  But I take it from the price you paid that you are in the Terrace boxes, yes?  Those are great seats.  I had those seats for brian last three shows there and they were perfect.  I'll be in the garden boxes just in front of you!  Don't ask what I paid...grrr...I can't wait.  Gonna be great!

I hope this is OK to post here...
I have 3 extra Hollywood Bowl tickets for Sat June 2, 2012 available for face value (no scalping from this guy) that I won't be able to use.  They are much better than the seats that are currently left and available for sale.  They are in section K2.  I paid approx $90 for each ticket after ticketbastard fees.  These are actual hard copy tickets purchased from ticketmaster not paper or e-tickets.  Not looking to make any money, just to recoup my initial investment and find these decent tickets a nice home.  Shoot me an e-mail if interested.  I'd even consider trading if you have some neat-o rare BB / BW stuff!

Thanks!

137  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What's VDP's problem? on: February 20, 2012, 06:32:20 PM
Mike Love and Van Dyke Parks - Why must they be referred to as Heroes and Villains (see what I did there) in Brian's story?  Ron, your comments are over the top, rude but more importantly off base.  Mike and Van have a long history of not getting along.  Have you seen Billy Hinsche's movie with Dennis playing up the situation?  It is not just about Late 66 / early 67 (though that certainly got the ball rolling).   Ask Van about flying with Mike.  Ask Van about how he feels re: character assassination on prime time tv.

Van dyke hasn't bitched about Mike every chance he has had, he has more often than not been a gentleman and tried to steer clear of mudslinging and name calling.  In fact we moaned for months wishing he would weigh in.  He has been hounded many times to give his thoughts on the Smile box and recent events so he finally relented.

I respect BOTH men and value their contribution to Brian's (and The Beach Boys' work).  Neither are perfect, both have flaws but without either one, Brian's work wouldn't have been quite as spectacular.  I'm hoping the reunion brings some peace between Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce, and David.  That will mean more to all of them than the inevitable payday, I think.  Van dyke is a very nice man and his situation regarding the Beach Boys has been a tough one.  To say he is upset merely about the actions of a few months in the 1960s is not seeing the whole picture.  It would be foolish not to appreciate the challenge there.  Anyhow I'm looking forward to seeing the reunited boys at the Bowl soon.  It will no doubt remind me of the last time I was on the left coast and had a very nice chat with the very amiable Mr. Parks. Peace to all!

Drbeachboy,

Not saying I disagree with you (The vocal arrangement IS excellent),  but is that BRIAN'S work?  I have not read much about the recording of that tune.  I'd love to hear more about the track...

Very happy to see you post here again, Mr. Desper.  Your engineering with the boys produced their BEST SOUNDING albums and to have your presence here, sharing your knowledge and personal stories is a wonderful gift.

I would love to buy the Recording The Beach Boy book and also the matrix, if you ever do reprints or updates as I missed out the first time.

Thanks again for posting and we would love to see you more around these parts.  All the best through the holiday season and into the new year!

Cheers,

Slighty OT, but I read ( a year or 2 ago) in a Danny Hutton interview that 3DN were going to release a new album (without Chuck Negron) that included the participation of our man Brian Wilson.  But still no album has been released (though a song or two from the sessions has leaked out...

Anyone know any more?
141  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What fans thought of BW 89 back in 89 on: December 18, 2011, 01:09:47 PM
I bought it in 1988 and quite enjoyed it.  Still think it has many strong points and good songs on it.  I would rate it higher than a few of his other solo cds.  As an 11 year old in 1985, Getcha Back was the first BB 45 vinyl single I ever bought.  Saw the BB live in 1987.  At 14, BW 88 came at a good time and I ate it up.  It was just as I was seriously devouring their back catalogue ad their under appreciated, lesser heard stuff.

I have BW on every format; cassette, vinyl, cd.  I have the words and music promo cd (3 copies - so to the person asking it isn't really that rare) and record with the interviews, the cd singles for, Melt Away, Love and Mercy, Nighttime.  I also have 4 cd copies of the cloth bound deluxe BW 1988 issue.  They are not super rare and can be had for around $10 on ebay if you are patient enough...

143  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Black Friday Record Store Day (extras up for trade) on: November 27, 2011, 10:45:46 PM
Howdy all,
I bought a bunch o' exclusive stuff of the Black Friday RSD variety.  Sadly no Beach Boys or Brian stuff this go round (although I still have an extra Good Vibes / Heroes 10" from last RSD).  Anyone else by some neat-o items?

I ended up with an extra Beatles box set (4 - 45 singles with poster and hub) and an extra Pink Floyd Wall box set (3 - 45 singles with hub) as my wife picked up copies as a gift for me.  I could throw 'em up on Ebay and make a buck or two (and I probably will if I can't work out a trade somewhere), but it would make me feel greasy and I would rather just trade for other rare stuff.  If anyone has rare (preferably BB / BW stuff) stuff to trade and wants the brand new still sealed Beatles / Pink Floyd box sets drop me a PM or e-mail.
Cheers,

You are welcome Ponghit!  I think I have every major legit BB /BW book in my library and enjoy increasing my knowledge of the band.  The only one that i haven't bought yet is Endless Summer: My Life With The Beach Boys because I was hoping Amazon.ca would carry it but so far only amazon.com has it so I may have to buck up and pay for the shipping...

As for the women (dirty or no) good luck gents!

Wouldn't it be Nice and the Making of PS is great.  Very well written and informative.  Place it way ahead of getting the 33 and 1/3 book.

Re: Pet sounds 331/3.  I have 2 copies of it actually (got it as a gift twice...)  It is alright, I enjoyed it but it is hardly essential reading.  It is mostly someone's personal relationship with the album and offers little in the way of insight into the recording, performing and writing of the album.

John Stebbin's FAQ, however is absolutely essential reading and a must have.  I really enjoyed it and of course as I'm sure you know, Jon put the same care and attention as he did in his top notch essential David Marks and Dennis Wilson books.  I don't entirely agree with 100% of what he writes (I take a slightly different opinion on how Brian is regarding his solo material and years) but I enjoy his writing style and look forward to more material from him in the future.
147  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian says Beach Boys reunion album sounds \ on: November 07, 2011, 09:54:44 AM
I really hope that Mike is "allowed" to write with Brian.

You're assuming that Brian & his team are calling the shots here, I see.

I said no such thing, Andrew.  I figured a learned man such as yourself wouldn't make the same mistake you are accusing me of ;-)

I merely mean that is in a situation such as this, where there are a MULTITUDE of interested parties (BRI, record companies, lawyers, wives, family and managers) it is sometimes hard to make decisions that are in the best interest of the record and the group (This "too many cooks" situation has reared it's head before).  Even the band themselves admitted as such on the rooftop reunion at Capitol a few years back.  It seems from the principals who have spoken thus far, EVERYONE seems like they want to call the shots.  Al, with his 110 shows (doubtful to say the least), Bruce, with his I'll be in the audience line, Mike, with his I want to sit down with Brian and start from scratch etc.  Clearly if they ALL are on the same page they have yet to communicate a unified plan to their audience.

Also Brian has already referred in the press as having written with Jeff and Joe and being that he has mentioned this material as a solo record and has now mentioned the same two names (Joe and Jeff) with respect to a Beach Boys project, one can understand how a worry of the Beach Boys only being used as vocalist might present itself with the information available thus far.  I was merely airing my "hopes" for the project.  What are your hopes, Andrew, with respect to the recording (and not the live work)?
148  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian says Beach Boys reunion album sounds \ on: November 07, 2011, 08:34:59 AM
I am skeptically optimistic about this (Is that even possible)!  Unlike some, I am very happy that they are trying to work together.  And some healing IS needed here.  It can't be as great as their classic material (how could it?) especially with the big holes that Carl and Dennis leave, but it still could be very good.  And as cheesy as the sentiment may be, most agree with Bruce Johnston re: Bring back Happy Endings (chuckle).

I am glad they are doing something in the studio.  I am sure there will be some live dates, but I feel that a studio reunion has the potential to sound much better.  Like many,  I have really mixed feelings about Joe Thomas' involvement.  Both Brian and The Beach Boys' vocals were wonderful on Imagination and Stars and Stripes (Thomas does indeed deserve high praise for this), but the instrumental track choices were often ill-advised.  I am hopeful that someone will have heard the "concerns" of many longtime Beach Boys fans and passed it on to Joe.  No nylon string guitars please.  Take it easy on the Triangle and new age percussion, and outdated synths.  More live tracking with real instruments and an organic approach including instruments that are a part of BRIAN's working vocabulary .

I really hope that Mike is "allowed" to write with Brian.  I would be disappointed it this was all Wilson / Thomas co-writes.  Dr. Love deserves the chance to see it he and Brian can still write great songs together.  Maybe he can pen some great lyrics, maybe he will endlessly recycle old song titles and revisit the same tired cliches.  Who knows, but he deserves a shot and most fans want to hear the results.  Most fans are not shouting, "I hope I get some more of that classic writing team of  Wilson / Thomas again".

I am excited to hear the results of them singing together again.  It would be nice to have David Marks guitar playing involved too.  I like Jeffrey Foskett's voice and it makes sense to have him involved so Brian is at ease, but I'd love to hear a few Matt Jardine vocals on the top of the stack.  But aside from my selfish wants, I hope it brings some peace, closure and heals some old wounds of some wonderful senior citizens whose work has enriched my life greatly.  I love the Beach Boys!
149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Perspective: Good Vibrations Box Set on: November 05, 2011, 02:41:33 PM
I was born in Feb 1974.  Grew up listening to my dads LPs.  The holy trinity were The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons (Frankie was my dad's fave of the 3).  I loved all three of those groups but the BBs were in last place until I saw my first Beach Boys concert in 1987 in my hometown Calgary (Alberta, Canada).  Carl Wilson nearly knocked me on my ass with his singing that night, I didn't know who he was before then.  I became a super big fan shortly thereafter (my dad just had just had hit comps) and bought all legit released stuff and started to get some cassette bootlegs from friendly traders.  I read all the rock mags of the time and was pumped to hear about the good vibes box.  Bought it on the day of release (at costco of all places cause it was way cheaper than elsewhere and my friend worked there and assured me that they had it).

Loved the box and the smile material (though I had heard much of it already).  I recall that all the reviews were really positive and it got much coverage in the mags at the time.  I recall much praise for the unreleased gems (not just smile) and a few gripes about missing songs.  No Let Him Run Wild?  How could Brian actually not want that on the set - he must be nuts?  Lots of controversy round then with the BW autobiography, it's fallout and lawsuits.  I was just a sponge and soaked it all up.  Listened to classic stuff on the box a lot and even found time for my Sweet Insanity and 21 Little Ones cd bootlegs that I bought on a NYC trip.  Bought all the releases on Vinyl, cassette and cd.  Read every book.  It was a great time to be a fan then and it is a great time to be a fan now.  Thanks to ALL of The Beach Boys for the happiness they have brought to my life.  Thanks to Mark, Alan and all the folks that helped bring the Smile box into existence.  What a long strange and wonderful trip it has been.  Long may it continue...
150  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How Many TSS Boxes Do You Need (For The Truly Anal)? on: November 05, 2011, 01:02:31 PM
I bought four deluxe boxes, two 2 cd sets and one stand alone vinyl set.  I have a problem, of which my family is well aware and happy to point out.  I didn't really mean to buy four box sets though, I forgot to cancel the first one I ordered from Amazon.com (forgot I even ordered it actually) and didn't realize my error until I got the notice that it had shipped, and obviously it was too late to cancel at that point.  Tis alright though.  I usually by extras of many neat-o items and manage to trade for other highly desirable items later.  Still have a bunch of extra RSD Good Vibes / Heroes 10", special BWPS Box sets, extra SOT cds etc.

So your parents were clairvoyant when choosing your Christian name, then.

Sadly No.  Not rich at all, just a regular school teacher with two kids in diapers, a wife that isn't working right now and a car that recently died (twice).  I understand times are hard and that the box is a big purchase for some (me too).  But this was / is important to me.  I've spent years enjoying this music via sometimes less than legal avenues.  I promised Van Dyke (as he signed one of my smile cds and called me a pirate with an amused grin on his face) that when this material was legally released I would purchase several.  Did it with BWPS and now with the Smile Sessions.  I had to sell several rare items, but it was worth it.

Don't be satisfied with just the 2 cd set folks, make the necessary sacrifices and buy the the box.  You won't be sorry you did.  I managed to get several hundred dollars by selling some items that I didn't care much for on Kijiji and that funded my Smile Sessions multiple purchases!
