101  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike November 1982 Jamaica Music Fest Interview Crashed by Dennis (and Gage) on: December 18, 2020, 01:17:33 PM
With due respect to everyone, he possibly looks nervous because Dennis is "probably" under the influence and carrying a baby around.

If an accident happens on camera, then the Beach Boys brand and Mike's $$$ are in trouble.

You really think Mike's more uncomfortable about the possibility of Dennis, like what, dropping the baby, and thus Mike getting sued, than he is uncomfortable because Dennis is thrusting in front of his face all of that family baggage and controversy (on camera to boot)?

My second post in this thread was based on my instinct that someone would try to explain how this video *doesn't* have anything to do with the Mike/Shawn/Dennis situation/dysfunction.

Certainly, Dennis liked showing off his baby; he was proud. And certainly, probably most times past 1970-something, the other guys in the band were nervous about Dennis being under the influence. All of that is going on in this video. But it's also much more than just that.

Dennis is making a point to Mike, and I'm sure this wasn't the only time he did it. It just happens to have mind-blowingly been caught on video in this instance.

I'm not sure if folks are trying to be defensive of Mike when it comes to this video. That would ironic, because the *obvious* implications I've been talking about in this video certainly don't reflect particularly great on *Dennis* either. The general idea with this video is that, at least in part, Dennis is f**king with Mike by showing the baby born to Mike's cousin and Mike's alleged daughter. Whatever theoretical wrongs Mike may have possibly committed in this scenario, Dennis doing *that* was not a healing/healthy moment for anybody. It would only be antagonistic and further dysfunctional.

I'm not passing final judgment on anybody here.

It's just a really interesting piece of video from an historical perspective, with *clear* heavy interpersonal/emotional/familial/political undertones and implications.

Don't even think about dragging me into a Mike vs Dennis thing. I'm not interested.

I'm just saying how I saw the video. Not defending Mike at all. I'm a big Dennis fan for the record.

I don't detect any animosity between them here just awkwardness from the possible reasons I already mentioned.

That's how I see it. Could well be wrong but then you might be too.

Thanks for that. Very interesting. For whatever reason I thought he wouldn't like this album at all but his comments on Make it Good and Blondie and Rickys stuff are spot on I think. I'd agree with him on most cept I LOVE Mess of Help  Cool Guy

Anyone ever seen Bruce's review of the So Tough album from 1972? Really bizarre artefact, not sure what newspaper/mag it's from. Here's the whole thing, all spellings reproduced:

EX-BEACH BOY BRUCE JOHNSTON REVIEWS GROUP'S NEW SET

BEACH BOYS: "So Tough" (Warner). I was involved with part of the production of this album but very little. And I only sang on one track, so I think I can take a couple of steps away from the group and review it without mixing any feelings I have about our ex-business management and other things that bother me.
The name of the album is “Carl And The Passions – So Tough”. In America it’s a double album and the other album is “Pet Sounds”. The reason for including “Pet Sounds” is that it got poor exposure when it was released in the States five years ago.
I recall that “Pet Sounds” did O.K. in England and Europe, but in America it was kind of overlooked, so this is America’s second chance.
Anyway, I’ll just review the new album because that will be the only album released in England.
The first song, “You Need A Mess on Help to Stand Alone”, written by Brian and Jack Rieley, was originally called “Beachers From Baltimore”. I didn’t play on it but I watched Brian make the track. I’m disappointed at the vocal. I didn’t think there was much energy or unique arrangement put into the background vocals, and I don’t like Carl’s lead – it sounds a little forced and it’s a double lead, which doesn’t sound right to me. I don’t think this would be a good single, even though it is one.
“Here She Comes” – Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin were the writers. It’s a nice song. It’s not good, it’s not bad, it’s just a nice song, but it doesn’t sound like the Beach Boys. But I do think that if Ricky and Blondie decide to stay with the Beach Boys they will fit in nicely, especially having had a couple of months in the studio in Holland with everyone working without having any time problem. I think there was a rush on this album. The song’s O.K. but it’s really kind of a wash!
I think the most sensational cut is “He Come Down”. That has a lot of spirit, and it’s reflecting in the lyrics a lot of things that I know the guys feel, especially Mike and Alan who are now teachers of transcendental meditation.
They seem to have put a lot of things they’ve been thinking about and learning into the song, and it’s good. I would consider this track for the single. I haven’t heard a Beach Boy track with so much energy for a long time.
The next cut is “Marcella”, which I’ve always liked. I remember I went on a tour a few months ago and Brian had written the choruses and Ricky and Blondie and Carl were going over the song and rehearsing it maybe two or three hours before they went on stage at the concert hall.
When the hall was empty it sounded pretty good, but by the time we finished it in the studio it became a little vocally over-produced. It sounded like a collection of 10 years of tricks put into one song. It’s a little too gooey and commercial for me.
Opening cut on side two, “Hold On To Your Brother”, was written by Ricky and Blondie. I don’t think it fits the album. It sounds like something by America or possibly Crosby Stills and Nash. But on its own it’s pretty good.
It’s a little too long, but you can see the energy Blondie has in his voice, and I think in later Beach Boy records Blondie’s leads will be very interesting to listen to when they merge with Beach Boy harmony.
Dennis and Daryll wrote “Make It Good”. The music side of me says, “Gee what a terrific chord structure this song has, an incredible arrangement, I’ve always thought that Darryl Dragon should do more arranging as he’s a very taltented musician, and this song, to me, proves I’m right.”
I listened to this album on two different stereo systems, and I don’t think the mix on Dennis’s voice is the way it should be. I can’t make out all the words. I feel his voice is a little too low. Dennis has a nice fat voice, so you don’t really have to over-dub his voice to thicken it up, although he did that on some of his tracks.
I’d like to hear more of Dennis’s lead. This song musically knocks me out more than anything else on the album. But I’m not being very objective commercially.
“All This Is That” is by Jardine, Wilson and Love. I found the harmony here a little more interesting than the actual song, which is very simple and there’s a nice message.
The last cut, written by Dennis and Daryll, is “Cuddle Up”. I don’t think the song is quite as good as Dennis’s other cut, “Make It Good”, and I feel the arrangement is too powerful. I did enjoy Dennis’s feel, but I don’t think the song is quite up to some of the other songs that he has hidden in his closet – which he’ll play for some time and then hide them away for a year.
To sum up the album, I don’t think it’s as good as “Surf’s Up” and I don’t think it matches anything that “Sunflower” did. I like “Sunflower” better than any album we’ve made in four years, but I know it didn’t do well in the United States or England.
I would like to see more involvement with the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson. I spoke with Brian a couple of weeks ago and he told me that he didn’t really have too much to do with this album. I don’t hear his voice very much on this album and I’m hoping that if he does come to Holland to meet the guys and get involved in recording in the summer we’ll hear some more Beach Boy hits like we used to hear, but not repeating the old success formula, and we’ll hear some 1972 Beach Boys with 1972 Brian.
I suppose I should make a statement regarding my departure from the Beach Boys but I’m kind of superstitious about discussing the future. As you know, I have a lot of energy and it’s always been for the Beach Boys. I had a lot of hopes and dreams for the Beach Boys, but now I think it’s time to transfer all of those things to me. There are things that I’ve wanted to accomplish on my own and you just have to strike off on your own and do it.
Eventually, if anyone’s still interested I will make a detailed statement about what I’m doing.
I could say, however, that I do miss England. I love touring England and I especially miss riding on the Brighton Belle, but sadly enough for me they took it off before I could come to England and ride it last time.

I'd forgotten about this so this thread inspired me to give it a watch. I watched the first episode but gonna leave it there I think.

It's not necessarily terrible but I don't feel it's worth continuing with.

Can someone point me in the direction of which episodes the character loosely based on Dennis is in? as I'd like to have a quick look at them.

Edit: Just found this

- Piggies (2016) ... Dennis Wilson
- Revolution 9 (2016) ... Dennis Wilson
- Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey (2016) ... Dennis Wilson
- Revolution 1 (2016) ... Dennis Wilson
- Why Don't We Do It in the Road (2016) ... Dennis Wilson
- Happiness Is a Warm Gun (2016) ... Dennis Wilson
- Helter Skelter (2016) ... Dennis Wilson

Yeah, they did confirm someone else does the typing. Just think it's cool that they write exactly what he says rather than saying no Brian, you do know what Feel Flows is about.

I guess that makes sense that he might never have listened to POB from start to finish. He just talks about what he is comfortable with unless he is really at ease with someone he knows I guess.
108  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: November 25, 2020, 11:11:46 AM
I remember being at a live Q&A with Brian where he said he'd never heard POB before. I think it's kinda cool that whoever is typing for him is writing exactly what he says.

An update at long last! Billy Hinsche had Al as a guest on his latest webcast (https://www.facebook.com/billy.hinsche/videos/5355969761095940) and at about 24:27, Al starts discussing the latest plans for the “Postcard” reissue. Al says a tenth anniversary edition is being “freshly minted by UMG” (!), potentially for a release around the holidays. Best yet, sounds like more iterations of “Waves Of Love” are in the cards Grin

Someone really needs to invest in both a clock and calendar for Jardine.   Dude can't meet a deadline to save his life lol.

Needs a producer to kick his ass  Grin could have had 2 more albums out since Postcard already....but seriously we really don't need a 10 year anniversary of postcards. It was a nice album but hardly hugely acclaimed to merit anniversary editions. Give us some unheard stuff Al!

Yeah, with all dues respect, it's a difficult song to sing etc etc but those high parts are horrible IMO. He sounds OK in parts and seems to get a little better as the song goes on. Jimmy Webb tries his best but eh....not so good there either  Grin

112  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Trump fundraiser in Orange County featuring Mike and 'The Beach Boys' on: October 19, 2020, 10:39:49 AM
I think it's totally fine for artists to be involved in politics. They're citizens too. However, in no way to do I think Trump is a typical politician. And if Mike wants to do this super-spreader event, so be it, but not using the Beach Boys name. He should use his own name. Attach his own name to the Trump train, not the band's name and its legacy. There should be some kind of exception to the license agreement where political events require all board members to sign off.

Agreed. He's only getting these shows cos no one else will do them.
113  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: October 16, 2020, 09:42:04 AM
A couple of years ago we had the pleasure of attending a Brian Wilson concert called "Something Great from '68" that featured Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin and had the Zombies as the opening act performing their Odessey & Oracle album in its entirety, with Darian Sahanaja playing on stage with the Zombies.

Then Brian and his band (including Al and Blondie) took the stage and performed the Friends album (or at least most of it) just like Brian had done in previous years with Pet Sounds and Smile. It was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Friends album.

But just prior to starting the Friends album set, Al said something which I thought was a bit odd. He said something to the effect that "this band up here knows these songs better than I do, and I was there when we recorded them, and while I have no idea why you would actually want to hear this album performed in its entirety, here it is."

He was clearly bemused by the idea of performing in its entirety what he apparently thought was mostly a "throwaway" album of mostly insignificant songs, but at the same time he was certainly willing to do it if that's what Brian and his band wanted to play and if that's what the audience wanted to hear.

So other than maybe "Cotton Fields," maybe that's how Al feels about Sunflower and Surf's Up or (especially) the unreleased Sunflower and Surf''s Up era tracks that he thinks are mostly forgettable or in some cases embarrassing or maybe even outright suck. Maybe there is just not as much juice or enthusiasm for the Sunflower and Surf's Up period among the surviving Beach Boys as there is with Beach Boys fans.

I've told the story before- When I met Al, I mentioned something about "Lookin At Tomorrow" (I think I said I was surprised he didn't play it), and he responded very strangely. He seemed taken aback or almost offended, and said something like, "No, no ... that song is not ... appropriate ..."

Maybe he thought you said "Never Learn not to Love"....possible.

Peadar: HHV declined to carry a few copies. I'll try another Berlin shop. I really love 'The Record Store' so will ask them.

That's a pity. I haven't been to the 'The Record Store' for a good few years.

I was in a band a couple of years ago and Dodo Beach stocked the record for us. Might be worth a go - https://www.dodobeach.de/

OK, I'm clear on this now. Thanks Jon S and HeyJ.

It's hard for people to get through 80 pages and keep track tbf.

Re: Doc Smiley...pretty sure it was Howie who talked about the Dennis material now being in doubt. If you find Howie's profile, you can look at posts he made.

As far as I can tell there is no evidence that Mike has a problem with Dennis material.
This would only be true if there was no "evidence" that is not widely known to the public. I doubt many here would think that's the case.

I thought it had been cleared up earlier in this thread that at least re: feel flows, this wasn't an issue.

I'm aware they had plenty of personal issues in the past but as far as that impacting Dennis Wilson material appearing in later years on comps and so on, then I'm unaware of that and would be interested to know more.

I addressed this several times in recent posts, including one on this page above.

The issue of removing Dennis material is a more recent development separate from the initial issues with the set's delay.

OK, so, Dennis Wilson solo material had nothing to do with the initial delay however it's now unlikely to be released in whatever version of FF is released? and it's likely because of Mike Love objections?

They look like a chain, but I could be wrong. I do have an indie record shop in Berlin I like a lot. Let me talk to them, and I'll let you know what happens.

It's not a chain but mostly mail order or pickup as shop is small and mainly clothes plus they have a huge amount of records.

Cool, sounds good, I do a hell of a lot of record shopping in Berlin so know most places. Let me now If I can help with anything.

That looks really interesting. Keep us updated if it's becomes available from anywhere in Europe as postage is $27.

What record store do you like to buy from in Europe? I'm happy to try to stock one with a few copies.

I guess if you wanted it to be available for as many people as possible then getting Amazon to ship it from the UK or Europe is best but maybe that's too difficult.

I sometimes buy from these guys - www.hhv.de in Germany but they maybe only deal with distributors. They do have a lot of independent stuff though.

Probably very difficult with Corona now I guess as not much traveling goin on.

As far as I can tell there is no evidence that Mike has a problem with Dennis material. I believe he was quite happy with the Dennis stuff on MIC.

Then you pop into this thread and it can become really REALLY confusing because of people speculating.

Disrespectful to Darian to talk about legacy and Stamos at the same time.

All he said was "soonish" for gawd sake  Huh
122  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: October 09, 2020, 01:15:47 AM
Cool
i would love to see how BB Fandom reacts to John Stamos being the the driving force of getting Feel Flows released. :D

IMHO it would put them up there, a few notches below folks like Darian, on a list of those who helped make a big impact on the legacy of this band, should Stamos be a factor in this set getting out.

Crazy talk.
