Summer in Paradise is one huge pile of dog sh*t. Anyone that says they like it is merely trolling.
I like most - not all - of it, and did when I first got it 24 years ago. Sorry, not trolling, just a fan since 1962 and long-time member of this board. Sorry to have a different view than you, but that's life.

Always been one of my favorites for the past 50 years, as is the album it's on. Beautiful composition and arrangement. "Terrible lyrics?" Huh?? It's a song about girls on the beach. So, oddly enough, the lyrics are about girls on the beach.

I took my nearly-6 year old son Casey to the Sonoma County Fair concert in Santa Rosa, CA, August 15, 1987. They were a little late getting to the outdoor venue due to a late arrival at Charles Schulz Airport just out of town, and went past the 10:00 p.m. curfew time, which is why, as it turns out, the last few songs were a little rushed. We didn't know it at time but there were several complaints from residents about the loud music, and local law enforcement was actually called in a few minutes after curfew to break things up! It made a story in the Santa Rosa newspaper, and I wrote a (published) letter-to-the-editor wondering if anyone complaining about hearing a free Beach Boys concert would also complain about Christmas coming a day early and then finding a new Mercedes under the tree. "Of course it was loud! What did you expect?" BTW, Casey slept through the concert, less than forty feet from the stage. That was the next-to-the last time I saw them (Candlestick Park in SF in either 1988 or 89) until the C50 in Las Vegas.

Much ado about nothing. However, as one who has had a similar horseshoe hairdo since my mid-twenties forty-some years ago, and doesn't particularly like it except for the convenience, but that's the way it is, I will only say two things: 1) I don't mind bald jokes, just tell me a new one, and 2) God gives us only so many hormones; if you want to use yours for growing hair, that's up to you.

Forgot about this one after seeing it at B&N quite a while ago (last year?). Got it for half off two weeks ago, probably should have waited for the next price cut, but of course it would have been gone by then. Quite a few annoying errors, not much really new presented of any great importance, maybe some additional info on old topics, but some good photos I hadn't seen (or had forgotten I'd seen). I like the format, organizing the book by song and album releases. I'm glad I got it, even with its shortcomings. If you see it, grab it just to add to your collection.

This was published by Murry/SOT in 1965, sold for $2.00 american, which was good price for us at the time. It didn't really give you any real guitar playing tips, except a quote from Carl in the "publisher's notes" to practice a lot, keep up with the trends, etc. etc. . . . and have some extra strings in the guitar case. Gee, thanks, Carl. On the last page, it has photos of Carl's left hand fingering "a few of his favorite chords" (C, G, A7, E6, Bmaj7, Gmaj7, Cmin7, and A min7) but its hard to see exactly how he's doing some of them. The standard chord symbols are on on the sheet music. I have the first five of their songbooks through the Pet Sounds album, including one for their first Christmas album that I had never seen before until it showed up on eBay about a dozen years ago. For reference if anyone's looking for them, the first one has a cover picture similar to the Shut Down II cover, the second one with a "Today" cover-like photo, the Carl Wilson book is sort of raspberry-pink with carl's picture, the next with Pet Sounds era pictures (songs from Summer Days (and Summer Nights) and Pet Sounds, and the Christmas one is just a light blue one with a Christmas-like illustration, no photos (without going over and looking at it, that is). It's interesting how some of the songs were so easy to do with just one guitar, but even then you could see how Brian's composing and arranging was really a lot deeper and more advanced than anyone would have guessed. Listening to the songs and following along with the sheet music really brought that out, once I learned some music myself and had an idea of what I was actually hearing.

here's a man who lives in the lap of luxury and owns the rights to the Beach Boys name which he wrested from his founding bandmates, yet still believes he's getting the short end of the stick.
He doesn't own the rights to the Beach Boys name, he has a renewable license to use it for touring, and he didn't wrest that from anybody, it was granted by a vote of the corporation.

The Beach Boys Love You is a masterpiece. An open-hearted, synthesized, psychedelic, test-of-time-standing, schizoaffective-punk masterpiece.
Webster's Dictionary has that exact same definition for the word turd....a masterpiece...etc...open hearted...etc...schizoaffective...etc...piece of crap...I think is how it really ends. Ever wonder why the Beach Boys...and when I say the Beach Boys I mean...Brian Wilson...Mike and Bruce as currently licensed...and the group way back in the day...so seldom performed any of Love You live...in concert? 'Cause it just plain sucked and nobody wanted to hear it. So to retroactively come at it from a different time and place and then subsequently try to elevate Love You above the afore mentioned turd is a re-write of reality. You like it? Groovy. Use it to help your garden grow this spring. Sounds to me like you're an MIU, LA Light, and KTSA fan. Well, yes, I am, all three. Love You is well down the list, not as far as So Tough, and Smiley Smile resides at the bottom as an album. Love You isn't a bad album for what it is, but it's a bit too quirky for my overall tastes, so doesn't get a lot of play when I'm thinking "hmmm, wonder which Beach Boys album to listen to today?". It's got to be the right mood. Every now and again . . . . . .

The last few posts from Balboa are even more disturbing, like a thesaurus as been used to make the post seem "educated".
I'm wondering when the quotation mark and caps lock keys are going to give out on Rocky's keyboard, due to overuse. Tee- HEE! Don't you mean "Tee- HEE"? Sorry, that's going to be my only contribution to this "discuss- ION". But that's what I did say! Someone send me RP's coppy editer... Somebody dropped the all-important QUOTATION " marks".

I can imagine any guitar player being disappointed by being given that lead, but seriously - very few guitar breaks tug at the heartstrings more than that one. Imagine what it would have been like with a "proper" solo - would have totally blown the vibe. Sometimes less really is more.
Good point. I've played that on stage and it just as powerful as the break on Surfing' Safari that I'd played a couple of tunes earlier.

Henley? Love? Relevant? Magnet? I don't know. What I do know is that I like about five Eagles songs - Lyin' Eyes, Desperado, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Take It Easy, the one about the new kid in school, maybe another one or so- but I love about 500 Beach Boys songs. If there are that many.

Say what you want during the holidays; if someone chooses to be offended that's on him or her.
Exactly. Thank you. Its Christmas whether you celebrate it or not (which I do). Ignore the perpetually-offended class. Merry Christmas.

Sitting in class sophomore year on the California north coast. Probably bought the record the next time I was able to get over the hill to a record store, $1.98 plus tax at KFD Department Store, since it was, of course, the new Beach Boys album, and was blown away at first hearing. Still am. Absolutely loved it, and never once had a thought about what seemed to confuse or even repel so many fans (and evidently Capitol Records) at the time.
