Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is Bambu all that great??

I think Bambu is utterly and terrifyingly brilliant! If it had been released, I imagine it might have gone down in history as one of rock's great tortured/wrecked epics ala Big Star's 3rd, or John Cale's Helen Of Troy, or R&L Thompson's Shoot Out The Lights, etc
Funny you should ention Big Star 3rd as I was going to compare the ramshackle quality of Bambu to Alex Chilton's Like Flies on Sherbert. The other post mentioning Gene Clarke's No Other has me racing to the cd player to put on that astounding album! The wrecked masterpiece criteria probably applies to Neil Young's Tonights the Night and John Cale's Music for a New Society. For me Bambu is probably not quite up there with these albums but it is a great album which I play frequently and shows that Dennis had so much more to offer. I particularly love that it is so different from POB.

For me Rio Grande is one of the hghlights of Brians career. It has everything I could hope for from a Brian Wilson song cycle. BW88 was the first BW/BB's album I ever bought. I was 17 when it came out and truthfully it took me a while to appreciate much of it, however once I "got it" it led me to the rest of his output and many many many years of rewarding listening. Although some songs suffer from the production (Love and Mercy) the album is superb and Rio Grande is the best closing track(s) I could wish for. Beautiful.

I've been listening to this theme song which is just such a great production and such fun. I believe it's mainly an Andy Paley song and production. Does anyone have any further details on the writing and production credits? How much was Brian involved? It seems to encapsulate much of what I loved about the Wilson/Paley sessions.

I'm not a big Beatles fan at all but I can relate to some of McCartney's solo work because it's so "Brian-like". McCartney II is a particular favorite of mine, even though I sometimes feel like I might be the only person who thoroughly enjoys that album. It's pretty close to Love You in both spirit and execution I think.
I love that album. The new deluxe version is superb as it has lots of the experimental synth stuff on there. Definitely the odd nod to Love You. Some of that stuff is way ahead of it's time. Temporary Secretary, Check My Machine, Mr H Atom, all brilliant. The experimental McCartney albums are out there and fascinating listening. The three Fireman albums are all excellent.

I mentioned this in another post but: This Could Be The Night by The Modern Folk Quartet. For anyone unfamiliar with it, it's basically Phil Spector's attempt to produce a Beach Boys style record and it's fabulous. Whether the boys could've topped the original is questionable as Spector's production is incredibe, but vocally I'd have loved to have heard them give it a try.
Conversely I would give my right arm to hear some of Spector's girl groups singing tracks (or the whole of) Pet Sounds, plus Spector producing it.
Lovely call. TCBTN was done by Brian Wilson (I have it on '21 Little Ones', or rather, I don't have it on that one that I don't have either); but that is too thin, soundwise. The Boys could have done it in a gorgeous way. However, Spector's steel guitar trickery can't be surpassed, IMHO. BTW, I have a cover of TCBTN on a Spector tribute album, 'Bionic Gold', produced by Jon Tiven, on some super-rare indie label. It's a great, great album, and one Vince Whirlwind, aged 17 then, does TCBTN. I fell in love with it when I was 19 myself, and it never left me since. The rhythm is changed considerably (slowed down), and all kinds of spanish guitar and mandolin sounds adorn this thing of beauty. It realizes the lyrical content of the song in full: the musings of a boy/man who's expecting his first sexual encounter with a girl he's been dating for some time. As far as I know, the LP never reached CD status. Hmmm... imagine the Ronettes doing 'That's Not Me'.... my current fave is 'When I Saw You' by them. Stunning. Uplifting. The lot. You can download the Brian version of TCBTN from I-Tunes 80c or thereabouts!

Didn't Brian have a two record deal with Giant. What happened to that, did it just fall away after he and Joe parted ways? I would have thought he'd have to buy his way out of it? For me the first two songs on Imagination are good, although the sterility of the sound means they are a guilty pleasure. Does anyone play this album when they have visitors around? The rest of it just doesn't do it for me at all. I love the Paley sessions, man they really screwed up putting Imagination out instead. I wonder if the Paley stuff will ever get an official release.

Unfortunately the downloads are not available to those of us in the UK. Kinda forces us into illegal download territory. I'd rather pay for it if it was available.
Can't you log on to US Amazon? I can log on to UK Amazon. Yeh I can log on and buy CDs but not MP3 downloads for some reason.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Disney v SMiLE

Am I the only person who has listened to In The Key of Disney more than SMiLE over the past couple of weeks? Understandably the Disney album has been overshadowed by the release of SMiLE but there seems to have been very little written here about it. I love it and only wish the bonus tracks had been included as standard to extend the running time.
