I love Infidels and it's only half the album it could have been. The unreleased stuff from those sessions is mind blowing. A very common Dylan trait, leaving amazing material in the can! Gotta love him. Jokerman is a top flight Dylan song and the vocal performances on the whole album are some of his best imo.

As do Mr Dylan, Crosby, Hillman, Clarke and Clark.

At Christmas they might give Child of Winter & The Man with All the Toys - my favorite songs of their Christmas album - a try. Encore - Winter Symphony and Santa's Got An Airplane. Why not?

Why wait? I seem to remember Brian doing summer gigs the year he released What I Really Want for Christmas, and he just sort of said, "Well, it's summer, but I released a Christmas album this year, so we're doing a Christmas song anyway". Wink
Really? Wasn't aware of it. Brian's a really cool then, if he said so.
He certainly did Little St Nick in Liverpool the summer before the album got released and he did comment on it.

I think general consensus is that Roger McGuinn's eponymous solo debut, Cardiff Rose and Back from Rio are his best.
Yes start with his first solo album. Cardiff Rose is good too, it uses Dylan's Rolling Thunder musicians. Back from Rio is good but very AOR. It's his attempt to update the Byrds 12 string trademark guitar sound. It comes off a bit Tom Petty, who is a co-writer of one of the songs. The cover of Costello's You Bowed Down is excellent.

I hate how it becomes a weird quirk that you're known for. Like enjoying the Beach Boys is some peculiar idiosyncrasy. It always irks me when people treat me like I'm just that guy who really likes The Beach Boys, as if it's no different than having a distinctive birth mark or hair style.

I've never met a girl who really cared about music that much. I find it hard to get through the day without putting a good record on, but some people just aren't like that. Some people just like whatever's on the radio and never give much consideration to the history or personalities behind the music.

I agree w/ your second paragraph. I've always had a theory that males approach music (and entertainment in general) differently than females (sometimes) do. In my experience, when males like a particular artist or genre, it's b/c they like the actual sound of the music or the voices; maybe the beat gets them pumped up, or the lyrics speak to them in some way.  So they get into the whole thing of learning about the artist's or group's history, etc. Now don't get me wrong--I'm sure that there are a lot of women who are the same way, but I find that a certain kernal of women, when they get into an artist or group, it's not really so much about the music per se, though they may claim that it is. It's b/c they think the artist is "good-looking," or a "hunk," etc. If there's no eye-candy in a singer's or group's appearance, they don't care (Dennis was probably the closest thing to a "sex symbol" in the BBs). The music itself is kind of secondary to the appearance of the artist/group. At least that's been my experience w/ some women I've dated.
I think you need to stop dating shallow women mate.

Bob has no equal in contemporary music. I've seen him over 40 times and each time new things happen, incredible artistry. Start with Freewheeling, Bringing it all Back Home, Highway 61, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding, Blood on the Tracks, Desire, Slow Train Coming, Infidels, Love and Theft (long list I know) and you'll get a taste of the many faces of Dylan from various periods of his career. Enjoy the ride, it's quite a journey!

I listened to all the post Sweetheart albums today, including the re-union album and am now on to McGuinn's first solo album. I reckon the reunion album is better than any of them except Untitled and McGuinn's album is better again, that's a great record. Anyone got a view on the reunion album? The production is very poor but still I prefer it to the Battin/Fowley era. That rhythm section just doesn't work for me. I know few will agree but sometimes White's guitar playing for me is hit and miss, technically superb but overdone at times and generally too prominent in the mix.

When this album was released close to I Just Wasn't Made for these Times and the rumours of the Paley sessions began to emerge it was an exciting time as we had been waiting since '88 for new BW recordings after Sweet Insanity did not get a release. I love OCA dearly, I love the songs and Brians performance. I am a sucker for the wall of Brians. Pity we got Imagination in '98 rather than the Paley collaboration.
I'll take Imagination over the Paley stuff I've heard, but agree with the rest of your post. Can't believe anyone thinks Brian's voice is "shot" on OCA. No, it's not the sweet voiced Brian of Surfer Girl, Don't Worry Baby or Caroline, No, but he sings very well with his "grown up" voice on OCA.
I agree, most singers voices change over time, especially those who don't take care of them, Brian is one of them. It doesn't mean he can't sing it just means he sings differently. I love his 90's singing voice just as much as his 60's voice, it's different, but to me he was still amazing. Fast forward to 2012 and he's different again, somewhere between his 60's and 90's voice and still sounding great to these ears.

Just a few months ago I put my Love You CD in as I was driving in my ex-girlfriend's convertible. After about 30 seconds into Roller Skating Child she ejected it and threw it out of the car. She said it creeped her out. I never forgave her for that.
Love You should come with a spousal warning. When I put that one on mine pulls a face like a bulldog licking piss off a nettle!

You've got to wear 'em down! My now wife, then girlfriend, used to like waving her arms about like a maniac and shout "spiritual music man" in a slurred voice when the BB's were played, which is much of the time in my house. On listening to the Smile sessions vocal montage she said "well it's no wonder he went fuckin mental!" However through sheer persistence I believe she has come round a bit, she likes the Gershwin album a lot, sings along to the Disney album and does not object to TWGMTR.

Newguy, you need to like PCH because it's Brian Wilson sprouting giant wings and a tail and making one more late visit to the long-shuttered brain space that gave us Pet Sounds, Smile and 'Til I Die.  The last thing anyone ever expected was for the Brian we've grown to know and love to be taken over by THAT guy again, firing on all 16 cylinders and making capital-a Art.

The last 4 tracks on TWGMTR are pure f*cking gold. And the rest of the album, although mostly lower-case-a art, rolls up and smokes most of what the band has put out in over 40 years.

This is The Resurrection.
Amen. (Head bowed.)
189  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is That’s Why God Made the Radio (the album) among their very best?! on: June 27, 2012, 05:33:16 AM
I whole heartedly agree with you! Too many of their early albums contained what can only be seen as annoy filler at times (Shut Down Vol. 2!), while TWGMTR, in my mind, doesn't feature any of the intentional sort.
I respectfully disagree with you about Shut Down, Vol.2 being filler. Call me weird but I consider it the best surf instrumental of the group. Agree with your statement re new album though.

TWGMTR is a very-very good album even if it's a bit oversonic which is not mind-boggling if remember the year of its release - 2012, 21st century. I love almost all of material, and the songs I don't like aren't the worst of the BBs catalog.

However, despite all the nice words said above, I won't rank this record higher than any of the 60s (even Friends, LDC and Surfin' Safari) & 70s stuff (excluding L.A. & CATPST).

I'd place it right after 15 Big Ones: I somehow enjoy the latter more than the new one. That said, Brian's, Al's and Mike's vocs on TWGMTR are among their best performances imo. And it's a very strong point for the record!
So, the album makes Top-20 entrance in my list.

I've never known another album (other than smile perhaps) which places so many random snippets of melody in your head throughout the day. By the way I finally got to the Ram reissue and the Neil Young album this week. Your in for another treat!
190  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What Love You song should be added to the setlist? on: June 25, 2012, 02:49:03 PM
Mona, I can just see Brian enjoying himself on that one. I've heard him do The Night was So Young and it was superb.
191  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Best album? on: June 25, 2012, 02:44:46 PM
Friends and Love You are my favourite Beach Boys albums and completely different ends of the boys musical spectrum. There is no weak album on that list though. I probably listen to 20/20 least of the bunch but get the two-fers and you'll have the lot for a minimum spend and you'll be in Beach Boys heaven for weeks!
192  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pacific Coast Highway Overrated ? on: June 25, 2012, 02:40:09 PM
It's too short to be boring.
It has a linnear structure. No repeats, just changes within a short time span.
Vocals are great. Harmonies sublime.
Subject matter touching.
Lyrics good.
Production ditto.

No way it's overrated.
That pretty much sums it up. For me it is another example of Brians enduring creative talent. Call it genius if you will, certainly a great talent. It blows me away, no-one else produces the goods like this.
193  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Isn't It Time new lyrics on: June 21, 2012, 08:43:08 AM
Song's perfect the way it was.
Agreed. Loved it from the first time I heard it. Love it more each time I hear it. The album version is perfect to these ears. Quirky perfection.
194  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Should They Call It A Day After This Tour? on: June 21, 2012, 08:37:21 AM
Just wondering aloud.....what would you (or anybody) consider the last 'rock and roll" song Brian Wilson wrote?

To answer the question: I think if they so decide, this would be an excellent time to leave on a high. A good and top selling album and a very successful tour. However, if they want to continue recording and touring that would be great just as long as they can keep up with the current standard they have set this year.
Going Home on TLOS was definitely Rn'R. Morning Beat rocks too.

I am loving LOVING that bass-and-ukulele groove on Isn't It Time.  Love the falsetto vocals.  Boy, that is one outstanding song, brilliantly arranged.  Major ear worm!  Love it!

A fun song in every way!

Ukulele!  YAY!

Outstanding song and recording. I hear a lot of Love You influence on this one.

I agree ! It just sounds more polished than a imaginative Love You version probably would've

Isn't it rhythmically and in terms of percussion too complex to be on Love You? Personally, I like Isn't It Time more than any recording on Love You, but that's subjective of course.
Yeh, it is a more accomplished recording and a more complex arrangement than Love You but they seem to be related, probably the prominent bass and the ultra catchy repetitive melody. I can hear it this one done with farty synths and rough voices.
196  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Byrds on: June 21, 2012, 05:55:32 AM
I have not heard Glass, I'll seek it out. Usher was by a far the best producer the Byrds had. He perfectly complimented the material they recorded with him.
197  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Byrds on: June 20, 2012, 01:20:41 PM
so i just left the music store and bought ballad of easy rider...dr. byrds & mr. hyde..and untitled Smiley ..well worth the $30 bucks!

Newguy, I assume you bought the untitled/unissued CD, which is Untitled remastered with an entire bonus CD.  You are in for a treat.  The bonus CD will cause your jaw to drop!  Totally drop out.  Check the alternate "All the Things".  Mind blown!  Then listen to the live "This Wheel's on Fire".  !!!!!!!!!!!  Clarence's solo will blast the enamel from your teeth!  (It's a good thing!)

 Cool Guy
The lyrics fit with the musical they were written for but are weird taken out of context as they were on Untitled. Good album, brilliant reissue!
Smiley i actually love both versions of "all the things" i don't know which one i prefer lol..actually i love that whole album i'm suprised it's so good i thought they lost it by the 70's i wish people brought up this era more and stop making it seem like they lost it after the 60's!...chestnut marie is a f***in beautiful song (the subject is kind of strange but the harmonies are so sweet and catchy)
198  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Am Not Attending a Beach Boys Concert In 2012 on: June 20, 2012, 05:25:48 AM
I've been to about 12 Brian shows, 3 of which are my favourite gigs of all time (and I go to a lot of gigs) but have never seen the Mike and Bruce show. As they are not playing Scotland this time round I don't fancy the expense of travelling to London. All in I reckon it would cost me £500. If they played a Scottish date I would go.
199  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Byrds on: June 20, 2012, 05:17:40 AM
The guitar work on NBB is really outstanding. Seriously, try and count the number of guitar parts on some of those songs. The finger picking part on the chorus of Goin' Back is absolutely spectacular. There's too much focus in popular music on outlandish solo spectacle when it comes to guitar playing. It's a shame because I think NBB is really one of, if not the best guitar albums ever.
Simply one of the best albums ever. Add Triad and Lady Friend and it is in SMiLE territory quality wise.
