Ach give Led Zep and some Joni a go there is some real quality in there. Pink Floyd are appalling! Overblown, bloated theatrical nonsense, oh boy I really don't like that stuff, it reminds me of sitting getting stoned in my younger days with people going "oh wow man" and me saying "this sh*t is boring, anyone got a copy of Beach Boys Love You?". Other big acts I just dont want to investigate beyond what I have had the misfortune to hear on the radio are U2, theres just no justification for by that pompous, overblown, hectoring, purile nonsense. The Edge's (fucking silly name) guitar playing annoys the hell out of me. I've never understood what people get from their music, likewise Coldplay, lame, just lame. Public schoolboy rock, horrible, Pink Floyd fit into that category too! Ah, I feel better for getting that out. Thanks

The first Neil young album i bought was ragged glory and it is probably my favourite. For some reason i tend to listen most to his post 1980 albums for reasons i cannot fully explain. The masterworks to my mind are ragged glory, weld, sleeps with angels, prarie wind and perhaps psychedelic pill, but very few are less than excellent. The weakest are everybody's rockin , this notes for you, year of the horse, are you passionate and greendale. Of the seventies stuff on the beach, tonight the night and rust never sleeps are truly works of genius. Lets face it, the guy is incredible.

I am into Landing on Water at the Moment. It has it's (glaringly obvious) faults but I just have a liking for it. Trans, I don't go back to as much. Old Ways I really like, Everybody's Rockin I revisit once a year if that. Hawks and Doves is also a favourite of mine. Hell they all tickle my fancy to certain degree!

I'm enjoying the album quite a bit. "Born in Ontario" and "Twisted Road" are catchy as hell and my favourite tracks are "She's Always Dancing" and "Walk Like a Giant". Honestly I was expecting something more from a 28-minute opener but I think the song as it is is just fine.
Here's hoping Nill 'n' the Hoss will bring the Alchemy tour to the UK (which he hinted at on Twitter recently).
yes born in Ontario and twisted road although not among the major songs on the album are just great rough and ready crazy horse workouts. I'm loving this album more with each listen.

Anyone enjoying Psychedelic Pill as much as I am? Wonderful stuff, granted the 28 min opening track may test the attention span of some listeners. This is a wonderful album, taking the vision of a NY/CH album to it's limits, I'm so glad they did it while there's still time. I t reminds me of the first 3 tracks from Broken Arrow crossed with This is Nowhere but stretched out in a cosmic groove. This one could be in the cd player for a long time. That's Why God Made the Radio will be revisited once I'm done here.

Mccarney 2 is an amazing album, way ahead of its time. The new deluxe version reinforces that view. Its the sound of a talented musician with enough money to have his own studio and high quality drugs. Remind you of anyone? Those synth tracks are incredible. Kind of a distant cousin of love you, it pays no heed to any trends and just shows you were he was atvat the time, love it!

Just to throw in my tupence worth. I am loving the remasters. I won't be buying Pet Sounds immediately as I just can't justify buying it again but the others have been worth the purchase. At first I was a little dubious as I was so used to the sound of the two-fers and struggled to appreciate the remasters. However by the third or fourth listen I was loving them. The step up in quality is appreciable. I'm loving the mono mixes previously unavailable on cd and some of the stereo mixes (Smiley in particular) do exactly what they should, ie give us a new way of looking at/listening to these recordings. The packaging is sh*t though.

The second half of the album took a while to sink in, those lomg narratives were hard to follow at first. Still enjoying it though some of the vocals are too harsh to be so up front. There also appears to be some interesting instrumentation buried deep down in the mix. It sounds like roll on John could be remixed to sound completely different. We've not heard the last of Bob, believe me.

I rate Love and Theft as one of Dylans greatest albums so time will tell if Tempest beats that one. I was so so on first listen as I found his voice jarring at times and the variety of songs bewildering but it is now making a lot more sense on 4th listen and I get what he's trying to do with the vocals and am rapidly warming to them. There are more melodies than I was expecting but less Charlie Sexton. I reckon my list will settle like this but it is possible that L&T and Tempest may change places. L&T, Tempest, Modern Times (love the vocals on that one but the band sounds flat in comparison to L&T and Tempest), Time Out of Mind, Together Through Life (a serious drop in quality from the others in songwriting, production and vocals), Christmas in the Heart.

I love TWGMTR, gave it a 4. I rate it as their best since Surf's Up and sort of equal to Love You (if you can compare anything to that album). It's got everything. Beautiful melancholia, catchy as hell numbers, quirkyness, commercial numbers and some cheese! In short it's the Beach Boys. Brian came up with some great songs and the boys and he have sung some beautiful vocals. The last 3 songs and Isn't it Time are probably my favourites but Think About the Days is a beautiful opener and I rate Shelter, Bill and Sue, Spring Vacation and Strange World pretty high. Mike Love's vocals sound so much better than anything he has done since the Sunflower/Surf Up/ Holland era, that was an unexpected bonus for me. I've loved all Brians output since BWPS with Lucky Old Sun being a career high in my opinion to sit alongside Pet Sounds, Smile, Friends and Love You. This album is pretty much up there too. I've listened to it probably 50-60 times straight through as I'm obsessive that way and it is still revealing more to me on each listen.

Think About the Days: 3/5 TWGMTR: 3/5 Isn't it Time: 2/5 Spring Vacation: 2/5 TPLoB&S: 3/5 Shelter: 2/5 Daybreak Over The Ocean: 3/5 Beaches in Mind: 2/5 Strange World: 3/5 From There to Back Again: 3/5 Pacific Coast Highway: 3/5 Summer's Gone: 4/5
After 3 listens, I give this one a 3/5 and pretty much put it to rest. Much respect to BW and the guys for getting together and recording an album after so long!
Seriously, you rate From Here to Back Again the same as Daybreak? Plus why only listen to a new album 3 times. I assumed we were all way more obsessive tha n that.

I understand that Brian's original mix is not markedly different from that of Al Schmitt. Has anyone heard the original mix and if so are there any significant differences? As I think that this album is one of Brians crowning achievements I would love to get my ears round his mix.

I went for Surfs Up. Though I rate Love You up there with both TWGMTR and Surfs Up. I've given it at least 60-70 listens now and love it dearly (Daybreak being the only exception). If you think anything post Love You is anywhere near the quality of TWGMTR I think you should make an appointment with Dr Landy, you are nuts and deserve to be mistreated! (I know he's dead).

For me the backing track for SOMS just doesn't quite work with the vocals. They sound slightly out of sync. If it was a more sparse backing track with a more prominent rhythm section it might have worked better. To these ears it sounds like it is; a backing track made by one person and vocals overlaid by another and the two don't quite mesh. Sorry.

Am I the only one who wishes the band hadn't hired Parsons? Weren't they going to record a concept album that gave a complete overview of the history of music? Unfortunately without Crosby or Clark, they likely didn't have the song writing resources to pull off something so ambitious.
Yes I believe that McGuinn said they were thinking of doing that. I like to think that it would have started out in the past sounding like Sweetheart and ended up in the future sounding like Notorious Byrd Brothers. The cover of Dr Byrds has the cowboys to spacemen theme. If Crosby had stayed in the band for another album it's tempting to think that another masterpiece was possible. As it is they peaked with NBB. Crosby went on to produce several masterworks. The Byrds didn't.

I've got the official Basement Tapes, along with a vinyl boot called Troubled Troubador, there's some overlap between the two, but the boot has some songs that weren't on the official album - I Shall Be Released, The Mighty Quinn, different versions of Too Much of Nothing, Tears of Rage. A Bootleg Series update is long overdue.
Yes indeed a bootleg series double or triple cd of Basement Tape stuff would be great. I also want a really good 79 or 80 gospel show released and one from the 88-90 band with GE Smith on guitar, they were amazing shows. A remastered and expanded Hard Rain cd would not go amiss along with a dvd of that film. Are you reading my mind? All great Bob fans think alike. There's no-one else with that wealth of stuff in the vaults. There is pretty much enough stuff to release an entirely alternative career length retrospective. Amazing artist!

Yeah, a Hard Rain DVD could be really cool with the un-aired/indoor show included as well. The live 75 Bootleg Rolling Thunder set is cool but nowhere near as snarling as Hard Rain!
Live 75 sounds positively relaxed and rehearsed in comparison. Hard Rain is demented at times, those ragged stop/starts in Maggies Farm could only be conducted by Bob Dylan. The version of Shelter from the Storm is one of my very favourite bob performances of all time. Any DVD release should come with complimentary turban!
