1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How complete are the Smile Sessions Box Set? on: October 11, 2012, 03:11:24 PM
They're planning a 10-disc sequel. The Smile Sessions: The Real Story.

You are joking about something that just might happen down the road.  Can anybody foresee a "TSS Remastered" some years down the road?

Very nice, David Wrightfan !

I'd like to hear some of your other creations.  I will PM you.

What are the various opinions/views with regard to the completeness of the TSS release?

Might there be other Smile session materials tucked away in private collections that are yet unreleased?

Can we be reasonably certain that Capitol's vaults are free of yet unreleased Smile session material?

Opinions, rumors and verified fact are all welcome.

I have wondered about these questions since I bought TSS box set.

Thanks.

Fantastic !

i'm starting to get excited about the various fanmixes that some of you very talented folks are creating.  Such work is totally appropriate for a work like SMiLE, because on such a work, the composer/author must at some point abandon valid alternative versions and settle on a "finished" product.  Unfortunately, some of the abandoned work or parts are going to be outstanding alternatives that some will find to be superior to the "finished" product.

Sometime after BWPS, I downloaded a fanmix from someone calling himself "Grooveblaster".  There were three files, one for each movement.  I found myself listening to this fanmix as much or more than BWPS, because I liked hearing the BB vocals, which were mixed in where possible.  The content of Grooveblaster's piece mirrored BWPS with regard to song sequence and length.  Does Grooveblaster post here?   His work is a great example for me with regard to how much a fanmix can be enjoyed by fellow fans.

I don't have the capability to make fanmixes.  I certainly enjoy the work of those who do.  I encourage you in your work, fanmixers.

The conversation with regard to the "new" or "lost" melody for DYLW has been fascinating in the extreme for me. I am a newcomer to BW/BB fanhood, only having come to the music a bit less than 10 years ago. I accidentally found some internet discussion of SMiLE sometime in 2002 while surfing the net.

I have listened to the lost melody from my own Box Set. I have listened to my BWPS at the point where this new/lost melody would be/might be included (on Roll Plymouth Rock).  To my amateur ears, I conclude that the new/lost melody would have fit nicely as a counter-point melody to what's already on Roll Ply. Rock. I don't know if the lyrics could be made to fit the meter completely, but the melody fits.

Also, the upright double bass parts in that passage follow the new/lost melody.

All of this conversation reminds me that a very smart person once said that a work of art is never completed, but, merely abandoned.  SMiLE and BWPS are examples of Psychedelic Rock, and, as such, the artist has carte blanche to add layers of complexity to the music. This work is avant garde by its very nature.

Never thought I'd see footage from the Smile sessions. It's mindblowing to say the least.
Now imagine if it was released on dvd. Like this for example (with a little extra imagination):

Disc 4:

Disc 5:

I wish it were all true.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Hi! I'm a huge Brian Wilson fan since August 2011. on: November 08, 2011, 06:58:43 AM

After reading about Smile in Mojo and Q, I listened to Brian Wilson's SMiLE in 2004. I didn't like it at the time. I thought to myself "oh it's Heroes and Villians and bunch of weird crap".

This summer I came across Smiley Smile in a used cds bin and since reading David Leafs liner notes I have purchased and dissected The pet sounds sessions box, Wild honey, I love you, 15 big ones, 20 20 and now the Smile sessions.

If you are a student of music, you'll never regret being a fan of and studying Brian Wilson's music. He will be remembered as one of America's very greatest composers. He'll be mentioned with George Gershwin, Aaron Copland.

I say he's up there with Beethoven and Mozart.
