1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Mike Love single on: May 01, 2020, 03:44:17 PM
Mike Love has just released a new single called This Too Shall Pass

What a fun record! Produced by Scott Totten. Great energy. Nice 50's/60's rock feel. No audible autotune, Mike's voice sounds more natural than on UTL.

Have to admit, this is a very nice surprise. I'll be spinning the song a lot.

Yes, it kinda gives me some "student demonstration time" vibes with the hamfisted politically "conscious" lyrics, but musically the song is so fun and optimistic, it brought a smile to my face.

A new Mike Love single nearly 60 years The BB's first single. How cool.

Totten did a fantastic job with the production and arrangement. Mike's voice sounds great.

And god willing, "this too shall pass"!!

Love and Mercy everyone.

Having just read through all these replies I am saddened that all the ML and Trump haters can't get past their biases and support someone who has given us so much wonderful music for almost 60 years has done something good for the hungry in this troubled time. I bought his single on I-tunes to support this charity. Bash away!

Alan introduced “Lookin’ At Tomorrow” as “ the last song from “Surf’s Up” we”ll be doing... I think”, then looked in Brian’s direction and added “Yes”. So, maybe “‘Til I Die” was a last-minute scratch for some reason & hasn’t been permanently removed.

The Zombies’ set was just under 1 hour. They didn’t fool around & pretty much played one song right after another, with probably no more than four or five stops for brief comments or introductions.

The other song not performed in Phoenix that was performed for the previous 2 venues was "Do It Again"  The concert in CA on 9/7 had the same set list as Phoenix of only 26 songs so it wasn't last minute. Also Blondie posted his paper set list for Phoenix on Facebook and it had just the 26 songs performed on it.

On the copies I have (Amazon CD-R, Japanese CD) Al says “BP” instead of “Texaco.” Unless I’m getting all mixed up...

On my Amazon CD-R , and Itunes Album (I burned to CD-R), Al says "BP instead of Texaco.
On my Japanese (Yamaha) CD and Robo Records CD Al says Texaco instead of BP

Thanks.  Do you know the name of the show or anything else I could use to look it up?  I’d love to see more of the footage from this.

"Goin' Platinum". It was on either HBO or Showtime in 1980. Last I looked a few years back, the whole thing wasn't on YouTube, but maybe it is now.

It was distributed by Showtime. I just watched it on the DVD I had made from a Betamax tape I recorded when it was first shown in 1980 (On TV Ch 15 in Phoenix, AZ).
It was the first in a series of shows called "Going Platinum" (not Goin') hosted by a Rolling Stones magazine editor.

Looking forward to seeing Al Jardine at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix on February 5th! We saw him almost a year ago at the same venue on January 29, 2018.  It was a great show. We hope to get another photo with him this time! (as the last one was out of focus!) Cry

Mr. Desper. I am so very sorry you have had to suffer abuse from some (fans?) that are so inconsiderate with their comments online regarding you wonderful Study Videos and your book. I had really looked forward with anticipation to get to read Part Two "Surfs Up" of your book and have checked nearly every day for it's release. I sincerely hope that you may find a way to release it in the future. I would certainly buy it if it were available!
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: October 10, 2018, 04:29:48 PM

Mr Desper. Is there a new anticipated finish date for part two?

COMMENT:  Rendering isn't always click and copy. There are digital bugs that creep in. So far we've done three renderings. Each has problems that must be corrected. I'm not publishing a book with mistakes or missing parts. We just keep plugging away at the project and eventually it will get done correctly. What can I say? ~swd

Mr Desper,  I see that your online book part two has a suspended status now?
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: August 06, 2018, 09:34:27 PM
Your attention to detail is most appreciated. Sorry to hear you have been having rendering problems.  Was just curious as to the status of part 2. I know it will be worth the wait!

COMMENT to DisneySpirit: I am also listening to the XM Channel, but other folks have put together the play list -- which is a good mix of popular and rare, IMHO, and the editing of all the interview comments. As to part two, it is finished. It is now being rendered to Vimeo using our format for the study-videos. Professor Conner does this as his time permits. Then a re-check. Anticipated finish date is late July, pending no major problems. ~swd

I am listening to Sirius XM Beach Boys Channel right now! I love the variety of the songs they are playing! Thanks for making sure all their music is represented and not just the hits.  So now that this big project is underway,  is there any progress with the Vimeo rendering for part 2 of your online studies book?
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who Sounds Like The Beach Boys? on: April 25, 2018, 02:35:07 PM
My favorite Beach Boys tribute band is the Fendertones! I found them on Facebook and YouTube Grin Their attention to detail in recreating the Beach Boys recordings is incredible!
Thanks to Mr. Desper for the info on Channel Surfing by Alan Boyd. I ordered the CD after listening to it on YouTube!

So glad to hear you are feeling better! Smiley

Dear Mr. Desper,

I have thoroughly enjoyed your online tutorials on the Beach Boys recording techniques.
As it has been awhile since part 1 was published, I am anxiously awaiting your part 2 (Surfs Up)
Any ETA?

I agree with SonoraDick. Hearing those songs arranged for just 3 musicians was great! It was amazing to hear them do Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villains which aren't easily performed well even with a full band. Matt Jardine kept switching ranges from his high falsetto to fill in other parts on those 2 songs and they sounded great!
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine - 2018 Tour Thread - Postcards Storytellers Tour on: January 30, 2018, 10:13:14 AM
Thanks for the reviews! I've added the setlist link to the top post.

I mentioned this a ways back, but Matt Jardine posted that he expected the setlist selection to expand as they do more shows.

Al, Matt: "Santa Ana Winds!" C'mon! It's a no-brainer! It's like the first song I think of when someone says Al Jardine is going to do a two or three-man acoustic show!

I talked with Matt during their signing and picture taking suggesting "And Then I Kissed Her" should be added to their setlist. He liked the idea. One fan brought a red Fender Stratocaster guitar for both Al and Matt to sign!

Just got back from Al Jardine's concert at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix on Monday 1/29/2018. We had 3rd row center seats and it was like he was playing in our living room!  Grin Wow so much fun! I posted the setlist on setlist.fm

Friday, February 12, 1965 Convention Hall, Philadelphia, PA. I remember I went with my sister who was 18 as I was only 15. I wore my WIBG sweatshirt and the Beach Boys were all wearing their striped shirts and white pants. Brian was there too! (I didn't even know he had stopped touring) The screaming was so loud that when the concert was over my ears were still ringing! That was my first concert and have seen them so many times since then! I was at the 50th anniversary concert in Phoenix, AZ in 2012 and that show ended up on the released Blu-Ray. I can even still frame scenes and see myself and my wife in the audience with our friends.
