1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / New stereo SMiLE mixes of my 1967 Mix and BWPS Mix on: April 01, 2024, 02:56:06 AM
Hey folks.  Just posted a March 2024 upgrade to my 1967 SMiLE Mix, and my BWPS Mix, for those that are interested (for listening pleasure, or simply gutting it to use in your own mixes)...

MP3:   https://mega.nz/file/es81SRwb#7mNSstZIM6hVUTVF4cJ4Vhho4PVNuK_1ErKw5u_g3J8
FLAC:  https://mega.nz/file/L0VmzJ5Q#UX_qf2IYnZxAkYFlqAYg2M56KxeptcKicuWJ7m-20CQ

I think of interest for you folks...
- complete stereo mix of the Cantina version of H&V.  Particularly the verses (which otherwise only existed in the mono acetate source), in which the bass and vocal is centered, the backing vocals panned right, and the rest is panned to the left.  And yes, as some observed in my previous Hitsville Mix, the "tape Epxlosion" part is in stereo too!  Wink
- complete stereo mix of "Wonderful"!  Brian's vocal centered, bass centered, harpsichord panned left, backing vocals right.  imo crystal clear.
- complete stereo rebuild of Mark Linnet's 1993 "Vege-Tables" mix, otherwise only in mono.  This was also on my Hitsville Mix.
- new stereo mix of "I'm in Shape Shape", with a new sync of Brian's vocal and the backing track.  Two separate iterations of it, the 67 version (with Brian singing along with the instruments) and the BWPS (with sound elements being added as the song progresses, and the tape explosion happening like four bars later iirc)
- new stereo mix of "Barnyard".  Really tried to get this one expansive and cohesive; it's not perfect, but I think it's pretty good.  New sync of Brian's vocal, centered with the bass, isolated backing vocals panned right, drums, guitar and animal noises panned to the left.

Also, for those folks who think the BWPS sequence is the sequence of SMiLE, then for this I really tried to match it as close as possible as an all-Beach Boys version of that version of SMiLE.

2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Heroes & Villains Cantina Version (ALL STEREO MIX) on: September 29, 2023, 06:56:17 AM
Just for fun (and maybe some of you folks would want it for your own SMiLE mixes), I was able to clean up my all stereo mix of the Cantina version of Heroes and Villains.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RrKUUqPGJMTUgsCjNbm6tTMZ9Gp0RhQJ/view?usp=drive_link

This is revising my version from my recent Hitsville mix.  Using Izotope Ozone I was able to more precisely hone in on the isolated lead vocal, and using Chameleon2 I was able to replicate the actual reverb as heard on Brian's original mono mix.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / new SMiLE ("Hitsville Mix" by soniclovenoize)!! on: November 24, 2022, 08:54:57 PM
Hey there.  Recently, a bunch of people were requesting that I upgrade my SMiLE...  At first I was like "Why?  It's fine."  but then I heard the simply atrocious 2022 stereo remix of Do You Like Worms from Sounds of Summer, and boldly thought "Hrrrmph!  I can do better!!"  So I did (at least imo).  And then I thought "Hmm, ALL of these stereo mixes should get updated, really..."

So decided to fulfill the request and make an all new, ALL STEREO, SMiLE... one that is completely separate from my "soniclovenoize 1967 Mix".  An alternate SMiLE from soniclovenoize, if you will...  But a few notes:
1) ALL STEREO because we can.  At the bare minimum, if this reconstruction sucks, then that's OK because here's some brand spankin new stereo mixes you can use for your own purposes, nefarious as they might be.
2) oh yes it is the CAPITOL TRACKLIST SEQUENCE!?!?!  Yes indeed, we are going to somehow try and make the Handwritten List work!  And indeed, for it to work, the structure of the songs themselves need to change to help the overall structure of the album.  Also, to make the tracklist more cohesive, all the songs are connected or crossfaded somehow into two continuous sides of music.

So anyways, here's my new SMiLE ("Hitsville Mix" by soniclovenoize)

FLAC: https://mega.nz/file/XtVGQS5Y#VK5F6IlUMKTpiR4wvLcLDIDpBA-YPMZWgmBjN5GjIxc
MP3: https://mega.nz/file/K5EmBTCT#PKct6zA7VLsSvIRFVNnhakNvo_xnnEqzQkmqR4u1pkA

Side A:
1.  Our Prayer
2.  Do You Like Worms
3.  Wind Chimes
4.  Heroes and Villains Part I
5.  Heroes and Villains Part II
6.  Surf’s Up
7.  Good Vibrations

Side B:
8.  Cabin Essence
9.  Wonderful
10.  I’m In Great Shape
11.  Child is Father of The Man
12.  The Elements
13.  Vege-Tables
14.  The Old Master Painter

ADDITIONAL TRACK NOTES:
- Completely new stereo mixes of DYLW and Wind Chimes by yours truly, as an alternative for the official ones on Soudns of Summer and TSS/MIC
- As posted earlier, I was super excited for an ALL STEREO CANTINA H&V!!!  So it's included...  sort of.  Barnshine is used in OMP, of course, so now it's Tape Explosion -> Bridge To Indians ->  Prelude To Fade
- For fun, I made a completely new (and what I think of as an original take on) "Heroes and Villains Part II".  This one, using the Gee/Part 2 iterations and some of Brian Psychedelic Sounds and other dialog, is supposed to represent a VAUDEVILLE VARIETY SHOW, in which The BBs are literally performing as a psychedelic Barber Shop quartet, have a vocal break and then there's a comedy sketch.  If you can picture that in your head.
- Completely new mix of Surf's Up which is the reconstructed backing track from TSS + the isolated vocals from Feels Flow.  Don't want to spoil the fun so just listen!
- new stereo mixes I made of CE and Wonderful with an improved sound stage
- The Elements?  Barnyard is Earth, Whispering Winds is Wind, MOLC is Fire (duh!) and Water Chant is Water.  Heresy you say???  JUST LISTEN TO IT and tell me.
- Really fun new stereo mix of VT, that essentially has that cool reverb on the vocal at "Toss me a carrot" that's only heard on Brian Wilson's mono mixes from UM17, and has the 1993 Mark Linett crossfade from the Chorus to the Fade, that's only been heard on the GV boxset!

It's great, Sonic. It's the time I have heard best the staccato strings in the coda. Thanks a million for your fantastic work.
I just listened to your upgraded "1967 SMiLE". I have no words, I think it IS (1967) SMiLE. Smiley

EDIT:
I added the "(1967)" so it would not seem that I think BWPS is not SMiLE. Imho, there are three equally legitimate SMiLES: the 1967 Beach Boys one, the 2004 Brian Wilson Band one and the somewhat hybrid but anyway awesome reconstructed album in the 2011 SMiLE sessions. The 1967 one, of course, never was released as an album, but your reconstruction is almost exactly like I imagine a 1967 SMiLE would, realistically, have been. I consider it a legitimate reconstruction of that never released album.
The wondrous SMiLE of our dreams, the one Brian manages to complete in the alternate world of the "Glimpses" novel, would never have existed in the real world, in any circumstances, for many reasons. But the main reason is simply that such a thing is too wonderful to really exist...

P.S.
I'd change only one thing in your 1967 SMiLE: I'd move "Workshop" immediately after "Fire", to represent both Earth and the reconstruction after the fire. I think that IIGS works well also without the Workshop section.
Ah, thanks!

I'm working on a new and completely different SMiLE that is all stereo.  Making new stereo mixes of everything except GV (damn, that new stereo mix is actually pretty great imo).  I was inspured by a thread on the SH forum and also my disappointment in the new official stereo mix of DYLW.

Something I've been trying.  Good?  Bad?  Ugly?  Did I succeed or should I just give up with this nonsense?

Happy New Year!

May 4th, 1966 - Western Studios: "Good Vibrations" - Master # 55949 / 1A0257
With Pet Sounds in the bag and scheduled to be released within weeks, Brian returns to "Good Vibrations", this time using his "modular" approach and recording each section of the song individually instead of a singular take of the whole composition.  This way, he could more accuracy find the emotion and magic of each section, editing the best together at the conclusion into a full composition.  Here, Brian records the Chorus section, as well as the entire Fade Sequence.  Of the later, only the Bridge will eventually be extracted and used in the final master of "Good Vibrations".

April 9th, 1966 - Gold Star Studios: "Good Vibrations" - Master # 55949
Unsatisfied with the previous recording of "Good Vibrations", Brain attempts a remake, with Take 26 as the master. Once again not making the cut for Pet Sounds, Brian would retrack the song with a modular approach the following month for a stand-alone single, discarding this day's recording altogether.

March 3rd, 1966 - Western Studios: "Good Vibrations" - Master #55680
Session to overdub bass, vocals and jaw harp onto Take 28 of "Good Vibrations". This first, completed version of "Good Vibrations" would not find it's way onto Pet Sounds, and Brian would later re-record various sections of it in his new "modular" recording approach. This recording is notable for the original set of lyrics by Tony Asher, which was about telepathy.

Hey there. I've been working on this little project over the last few years-- assembling all of the known recordings and takes of the complete SMiLE sessions. Although I'm only a little over half done with this project, I thought I'd share what I have anyways.

I will try to post a new day of recording every day, up until I get to the unfinished point.

February 18th, 1966 - Gold Star Studios: "Good Vibrations" - Master # 55680
The very first recording sessions for "Good Vibrations", at this point still a contender for Pet Sounds and recorded during those sessions. The Master was Take 28, with overdubs recorded March 3rd. Although the recording did not end up making the final cut for the Pet Sounds album, the verse sections of Take 28 were later used on the final version of "Good Vibrations".

Who was present on the "psyche sounds"?
BW, VDP, David Anderle, Michael Vosse, Jules Siegel, Danny Hutton, Arnie Geller and Bob.
Is that Bob Gordon of “Bob Gordon’s Real Trip”?

Yes.

But I do not recall hearing Arnie's voice at all on those particular tapes unless you're referring to the "Lifeboat" tape, which is separate.
Just going by what it listed in the SMiLE Sessions book.

Wow, sure has been a long while, hasn't it?

Recently a number of people have been hounding me about updating my SMiLE mix, the last one being five years ago.  So I finally did:
https://albumsthatneverwere.blogspot.com/2018/12/the-beach-boys-smile-upgrade.html

This time I've made it a three-disc set...

Disc 1 is my reconstruction proper-  SMiLE '67, which attempt to reconstruct the album as it could have been in 1967.  Included is both mono and stereo versions.  Notable updates include:
- Child following BW's 3-minute edit
- remix of Cabin Essence and OMP
- completely new edit of The Elements, meant as it's own self-contained suite, which does not need to "borrow" element from "Wind Chimes" or "Vege-Tables", etc.

Disc 2 contains an update of my stereo SMiLE reconstruction that follows the 2004 BWPS tracklist as close as possible.  As a bonus, it also has my remaster of a reconstruction of BW's 1966 December Comp Reel, and also his April Assembly of "Vege-Tables" tagged on the end.  I felt cleaned up versions of these were a historical necessity, not found on recent official releases (Brian's three--minute Child edit was supposed to be included, but I had to scrap it because of Wake The World lol).

Disc 3 is called Behind The SMiLE, and is meant as an audio documentary for the making of the album.  Ive made an hour of custom edits and reconstructions, alternate versions, etc.  My favorites include three completely different alternate versions of "Good Vibrations", each using different modulations, which represents the progress of the song over time (which includes a new sync of the vocal and backing track of the March/Pet Sounds version).  I've also done that for "Heroes and Villains", making four different versions, each representing how the song sounded in November, January, late February and March.  Also has what I call a "chronological reconstruction", which assembles the segments in chronological order, so within the span of one listen, you can hear BW's thought process of how the song should go.

Enjoy!

The session with the Drums and saxophones wasn't labeled but you can assume it was "Part Two" because of the Master numbers. I can't remember them specifically, but let's just say that Part One was master number 57076. The session with the saxophones was Master number 57077.
Hmmm, passing one's opinions and assumptions off as fact is a dangerous enterprise.

Generally, separate parts of the same song did not have different master numbers unless they were broken off into new pieces or simply rerecorded from scratch.  Recording chronology suggests that if they were different sections of the same song recorded within one day apart, they have the same master number.

18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Cabinessence sequence done when? (Are verse vocals def. from 68?) on: February 09, 2017, 11:47:21 AM
What we regard as the 2nd movement of Surf's Up (everything from "Dove nest towers" to "a Children's song") was recorded on January 23rd, 1967. It was overdubbed onto Brian's piano track. It included mainly just strings (and maybe some percussion?)(originally there were harps and horns but they were not used). That session lasted several hours (I can't remember if they took a break after). But by the end of the night, they were recording the 3rd Movement (aka the ending) of Surf's Up. This recording was labeled as Part 2. Hal was drumming, there were A LOT of saxophones (just one or two trumpets), Stand up bass and guitar.
How do you know it was the Second Movement?  It's not stated as that in the sessionogrophy.

Also the end of the day sessions was logged as for "sweetening" of Surf's Up PART ONE in the sessionogrophy, not a third movement.

Sorry, I was unable to isolate the vocals.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Cabinessence sequence done when? (Are verse vocals def. from 68?) on: February 08, 2017, 01:03:23 PM
Well, the backing track for the second half of Surf's Up was never even recorded, so it couldn't have been "basically finished".

No, it was.

Huh

When was it done?  What does it sound like?  Why wasn't it featured on the album Surf's Up?
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Cabinessence sequence done when? (Are verse vocals def. from 68?) on: February 08, 2017, 10:13:57 AM
Surf's Up basically was finished (vocally I'm not so sure). The April version of Vegetables was put together. It was mixed down by Brian on April 14th. Why it wasn't released, I have no clue.
Well, the backing track for the second half of Surf's Up was never even recorded, so it couldn't have been "basically finished".

Are you taking about the "April Assembly" of Vege-Tables?  I think that was just a test edit of the pieces recorded thus far.  It lacked some of the essential pieces like the Vocal Insert, Ballad Insert and the Fade, and the long gaps between the included sections seemed to indicate they were hastily performed for review purposes.  It is very interesting, indicative of Brian's intended structure for at least the first half of the song, but I don't think it was final.

On your remark on I Don't Know, I need evidence. All we know is that Dennis produced and arranged the section. Doesn't mean he wrote it. I would be surprised if he did. Knowing Brian's stupid obsession with astrology and vibrations, he might've gotten paranoid and sent in Dennis to do this section instead. It was labeled Part 2, and recorded in January, right around the time Bike Rider aka H&V Part 2 was overdubbed. If you ask me, it comes after Bike Rider's first ring out, that's why Brian overdubbed a fuzz bass onto Bike Rider.
Here is the credits from The SMile Sessions:

And then here's the ASCAP Repertory entry for an "I Don't Know" written by Dennis Wilson:

Curiously co-written with Kalinich/Jakobson with a note that "Love Remember Me" is an alternate title.  Either this is just coincidence and Dennis had written two pieces called "I Don't Know", or Dennis reused the brief piece "I Don't Know" into "Love Remember Me" for the Bamboo album.  Maybe someone has more information?

24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The two versions of \ on: October 08, 2016, 11:05:43 AM
There is an "Our Prayer" session (taped September 19th, 1966) that was in the key of #C.

The "Our Prayer" we are all familiar with is in the key of #D (taped October 4th, 1966)... Does anyone know why Brian raised "Our Prayer" a tone higher than what was worked on a month before? My theory suggests that the early version of "Our Prayer" was meant to be the intro to the album (as stated on tape) that lead into "Heroes and Villains" (also in the key of #C). But when "Good Vibrations" was on its way to being released as a single, Brian decided to change "Our Prayer" so it could lead into "Good Vibrations", the new opener for the album. That's just me thinking right off the bat. What do you folks think?

Or maybe Brian liked the sound of it a step higher, or it just better suited the vocal range of one of the group.

3. What were 'The Elements'?
According to VDP through the auspices of AGD, this was going to be a collection of unbanded tracks linked by crossfades. We have two parts that a fair case can be made for from surviving documentation: 'Fire' (actually logged as 'The Elements (Part One)') and the '66 'cornucopia' version of 'Vega-Tables' (attributed by Frank Holmes, from VDP's lyric sheets, as 'The Elements' in the LP booklet). Which leaves, presumably, 'Air' and 'Water'. (I'd also accept arguments for 'My Vega-Tables' being either of these, considering no direct documented connection to the 'Earth' element exists). Maybe one of the remaining two parts is indeed 'Wind Chimes' (short version) or Mike Vosse's 'water sound' tapes, which he recalls Brian spoke about editing into a full musical composition. Maybe they were never fully conceived or recorded. What we do have are two 90-120 second tracks directly attributed to this suite, which indicate an approach in terms of section length if not overall style. (Note: it's quite possible the April-May 'Dada' sessions were an attempt to add to the track after an overall change in album conception occurred in Dec '66-Jan '67.)
I have been bouncing a theory back in forth here (to admittedly dismal results) that Air could have been the 10/5/66 Tag to Wind Chimes that was re-appropriated from Wind Chimes proper into The Elements.  What we've been told by Brian was that Air was a piano piece that was never finished.  Well, the tag is a piano piece (a conceptual one at that, as it audibly represents air through interweaving piano notes) and it was certainly never finished (because the finished version of Wind Chimes was the version found on Smiley Smile).  And of course, the connection between Air and Wind.  If we are to go by the "Unfinished piano piece" as the descriptor for Air, then in my mind  the Wind Chimes Tag is the lead suspect.
