I like how the oldies are recast to great effect. Pulled into Brian’s swirl in 1976, with all that electronic keyboard (humorous) bombast. Palisades Park, Chapel of Love, Just Once in My Life and the others as if history were revised and these were the originals from a moon of Jupiter back in those days. A great gauze thrown over the remembered lot. And yet, human voices. Alas, the Beach Boys.
Yeah, I like it too, BB.

Nicely said, Bean B.
I just listened to the whole album again. A remarkable job of sequencing, by the way. It was an album that was supposed to reintroduce Brian (and the Boys). And it did. It begins with two tracks featuring Mike lead vocals with strong high harmony (classic). Then comes an "introduction of the vocalists" as Mike-Al-Carl-Dennis-and finally Brian take pieces of the lead in Had To Phone Ya. (A song grown out of a Pet Sounds era track and given a new production that equals the best of that era). Oh baby.

15 Big Ones is near perfect and was a great success. There are certain Saturdays when it continues to bring the right mood for me. It was Beach Boys Party a decade later…with a circus as metaphorical scene. Rock and Roll Music was the ringmaster’s opening gambit. Palisades Park was the circus-theme vamp. Just Once in My Life was a parade of elephants. Suzy Cincinnati was a bunch of clowns careening in little cars. And so on and so on. 15BO was messy around all the edges, and inside too. It was perfect for the time. It sold like crazy. Brian Wilson is a genius.

Wow. What a thread. 17 pages of talking about next to nothing. I must join in!
I don't know what page features the link to Zooey D. singing Wouldn't It Be Nice. But gosh, she does a nice job. Not an easy melody to pull of for a vocalist. And it is live. I think. Even if she is basically an amateur...a nice job.
So I'm rooting for her and the old guy. Who knows. To me the problem is putting out an "album" (12 bloody songs)--an ancient pose given to us by Bob Dylan and the Beatles. Why not put out one song? A great song. Even this old fart (yours truly) purchases songs one-at-a-time these days.

Thank you, C-man! Boy, it pays to check in here occasionally. Like OP, I've always wondered about this track... figured it had players other than the Beach Boys. I remember now ... a cd called "Lei'd in Hawaii Rehearsal" (Vigotone 133). At least that's what I recall from the distant past. Before throwing the cd away.
I believe OP is talking about tracks 11 and 12 on that cd. Especially track 12. The instrumental is gorgeous, such a light touch and expert arrangement. A remarkable build, leading to that instrument near the end, which OP mentions. It almost sounds like a kazoo.
Track 11 is mostly instrumental (a little thinner) but with some backing vocal harmony.
More info please!

I'm with Jim and Cam in thinking it is legit. At first I thought of a store owner gluing it to cardboard to place in a window display. But that fixing is well done (you can see the vertical cardboard stripes on the front over the word "Boys" --seamless, no bubbles). That couldn't be Elmer's. Cam's idea of direct printing is fascinating. Could Capitol do that?
So...rare. I would compare it with my "'Smile' the Beach Troll" (still have the package, although opened). Orange crazy hair, classic Troll plastic. This is when the troll fad had faded. Likely pulled or just not produced much.

Your terrific track made me wander...
to an old bootleg CD of Lindsey Buckingham...a remarkable disc containing songs that would appear on a number of his later releases and on Fleetwood Mac's Say You Will.
The boot has him doing Try For The Sun...in an amazing primordial way (it would show up later on a solo Lindsey CD)
Who is this "Donovan" ?

Jim, you are incredible. I like the language aspect. In looking back, we say "the beach boys" this and "the beach boys" that. Yet the definite article (or lack) would seem to have played a role all those years ago. On Candix we have "Beach Boys", also on the first Capitol single we have "Beach Boys". Soon thereafter and forever it would be "The Beach Boys".
I sense workings of minds. "Beach Boys" has a marvelous open-field big-hug quality...a good way to go. Even if "The Beach Boys" was inevitable. How the culture receives and responds.
And "The Surfmen" versus "Beach Boys". Interesting...which came first? Each seems to be a reaction to the other. The former has that athletic yet insulated quality. The latter...better...to conquer the world.

Of course we could come up with scores of scenarios. I was just thinking that B.E., at that stage, was likely very energetic, aggressive...and would soon grab the gold ring. Wouldn't be too unlikely for her to visit LA, with its producers, movers, and shakers.
btw...watch for the snail mail, Jim

BTW, if that is a wall phone behind Brian (with the circular dial behind his left hand)...where is the hand piece? Could it be that there is a guy sitting on the floor behind Brian, making a phone call? If so, he would clearly have important information.

Lee...wow, what a memory. I just checked the Dom book... yes, the Smiley Smile standup with Al on left and Mike on right. Based on what bgas showed above, it would seem the outer two pieces connected to the middle album piece. As Spock would say, "fascinating"

bgas...want to apologize. you asked way back about the honey's acetates. My acetate of "darling I'm not steppin out on you" came, I think, from Derek. Don't know how many were available. Maybe Jim can look at his old sale lists from Derek. I seem to recall a couple or three acetates. Memory...sheesh.
