Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary

At risk of duplicating past discussion, yet...
I spent yesterday afternoon listening to Be My Baby multiple times (like the big guy)...in preparation for listening to Pet Sounds this morning. Hey! It's a pretty good album!
But seriously...I have a question. Can anybody point to lines/phrases in the album where Al Jardine is up front? He doesn't have a lead, of course. Is that him with the "bah bah bah" in the DOK bridge? ( I imagine it is Brian sounding like Al.) Any help would be appreciated. In summary:
1: I'm surprised that Al, with a recent number-one single under his belt, did not feature more.
2: I wish that he had been the lead on Here Today. (or is he in there?)

I’m sure Andrew will buck up, will continue to contribute to the saga as only he can. He has seen worse. I am reminded of a soirée years ago. He was in officer’s uniform, glass of Maker’s Mark in hand, light and shadow stressing his tilted jaw, and letting it be known—to a circle of maidens no less—that his cousin Prince Vassily was in town for a spell, bunking with Andrew himself. One lass called him out—suggesting that Vassily had in fact recently passed on—whereupon Andrew broke into a falsetto take on the bridge from “No Go Showboat.” The girls positively swooned. He can maintain his balance.

Captain...thanks for the reminder. Had seen it listed at A&L daily. Now have read it. The article seems underdeveloped to me. There seems to be confusion in the use of the word "philosophy". To me, an important quality of high art is the surpassing of ideology (not so much with lower art forms). Not sure that the author is saying such when he talks about "philosophy." I wish he had gone further to consider the hard problem of consciousness and the virtue or lack of virtue in making ideology a presence. The article made me go back and listen to Steve Reich's"Eight Lines" and think of how it reminds me of some of the work of Sean O'Hagan/High Llamas. But not the other way around.

I've always disliked the cello bit in Good Vibrations. I would have used rapid, descending bass guitar (higher notes) arpeggios. But I will always love Parks' statement in the American Band video about the legitimacy of a band that sang about the place where the ocean water touched the shore. Very Shakespearean that. Don't care much for what gets said today.

Cam, I don't think you need apologize. This board, if nothing else, is meant to allow an expansive rhetoric. (I'm thinking of the example of the hermeneutics of Mr. Loaf as he has boosted jazz and questioned a couple of songs on Summer In Paradise). The problem, of course, is when the board's automatic editor changes our phrases ( "dinky to behold" becoming "hard wood"). Is such censorship necessary? Perhaps it depends on the clientele.

Hah hah! I definitely couldn't make that out. I do hope Andrew D. can help us. Gen. Aldo told me he thinks the Peter Smits character is some sort of Capitol liaison within the Universal Music Group, based in London. I bet he has a copy of the 45.

PP: Sorry for the lag in my responding…the story deepens. A friend from Whitechapel allowed me to hear the production (evidently pressed as an old-fashioned vinyl 45) over my cell phone. It sounded like the original Beach Boys version but in bad quality—like a 45 played on a phonograph and sent over a phone. This is more weird: The friend stated that a restraining order (he called it an “epoxy wicket”) has caused the records to be embargoed. I may be the only person over here who has heard it. So I guess I’m the link for now. I’m trying to get my friend, General Aldo, to contact Andrew Doe.

Hank B: I've read your posts, and have to guess that you are embellishing (I'm being kind) here and there. Like Carl Wilson in his "Australia" phase. To suggest that A. Boyd is your contact...well...last time I spoke with him he didn't know the difference between a primrose and a prime number. Although he knew a little about impatiens.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / POSNER PRODUCES NEW "Passing By"
|
on: June 15, 2015, 09:20:52 AM
|
I have to share this…blew my mind…from The Late Reverend Arthur Belling Evermore Newsletter, which, strangely enough, I continue to receive from across the pond.
Whitechapel, June 14, 2015. The “Offices of Mr. Posner (ret’d)” announced today the release of a new “modern” version of “Passing By” (Full Quotation Records, Ltd.). This surprising, perhaps uncalled-for, release by the veteran esteemed organist features a large cast of musical players and a surprising “today’s hip” result. Drawing from decades of experience, Posner has constructed a version of the famous Brian Wilson/Beach Boys song that seems to equal the original and perhaps exceed it in a quality of self-reference. “Our goal,” said Posner, “Was to do justice to each note and intention of the original—to do no harm.” He added that the recording is meant to praise Brian Wilson, the song’s creator, while perhaps offering a new authenticity that might resonate with a new younger generation. Calling on the services of some of England’s popular current singers (Smith, Perry), Posner was able to well estimate the harmonies involved. Employing electronics and his uncanny sense of the keyboard-semblable, he was able to mirror the original Brian Wilson sounds.
Posner reported that a video of the song’s production was to include a shot of Beach Boy Mike Love adding his lower part to the harmony. “That actually didn’t happen, stated Posner, “because of a prior commitment of Love to an antique auto show in Potomac, Maryland.” He added, “We also had to shelve the take featuring Kanye West blowing into a jug, because of a screeching sound that we couldn’t remove.” The final result manages to duplicate the original Beach Boy voices in the harmony and the arrangement and ambience of the original Beach Boys’ instrumental recording. The video of the song shows Posner, with local Whitechapel instrumentalists Jim T. and Pants Elk, and vocalists Pogo Mahone and Claude Akins straining in a successful effort to duplicate the Beach Boys’ gem.
Despite its brilliance, the recording has produced a small amount of controversy. “It’s just the same goshdarn track,” stated Capitol Records vice-president Peter Smits. “Nothing’s different from the original. Instruments…voices. I don’t know who these people are.” Smits admitted that he couldn’t prove that the artists shown in the video made the released recording. “But you know,” he concluded, “Only true counterfeiters could produce something so equal to the original.”

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Postmodern Jukebox

Possibly worth checking out if you haven't. Postmodern Jukebox is a YouTube phenomenon in which a group of musicians/singers places recent songs in old styles. Pastiche, I guess. But very well done. Every song features Scott on the piano and Adam on bass. The lead singers are always good. This new video features the Amazing Morgan James. She's a soul singer, but in this case...she does a mean imitation of a theremin. (at about 2:09) The videos tend to take place in somebody's apartment, suggesting a nice intimacy. I encourage all to check out the tons of performances...many great lead singers in many old styles. This is a new performance. It is NOT one of the better ones, overall. But perhaps of interest in these parts... especially that theremin. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ReSV3CCRzg

O & O is a profoundly overrated album on Beach Boys fanboy sites. It has a nice enough sixties feel. But really...relax. There is no great song, no complex harmony, no understanding of history. No shift in ontology.

Thanks, Lee. I'm noticing now that I have a Tonight You Belong/Goodnight My Love promo (red/orange target), then I also have a Canadian Tonight You Belong/Goodnight My Love (stock copy...regular classic orange/yellow swirl). Forgot about these things! Those were the days.

Thanks!
Just went into the closet and dragged out the little "singles" bookcase/record-case. Lot of cobwebs.
and...sweet...I've got that Sunflower thingy...plus He's a Doll and Sweet Mountain. Both of the latter are promos. Worth less, I'm guessing...but I bet I can afford that trip to Jersey now. (That's NEW Jersey to all you Brits.)
