Stephen, for IE 8, use compatibility mode, it will fix the problem you are seeing.

I'm happy but surprised to hear this board looks okay at all in IE 5.
128  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Donations on: November 01, 2010, 07:44:14 AM
So, what is to be the standard donation,  $50?

Whatever you can, whether it is a one time thing, or something on a recurring basis.

Just to keep everyone informed, I called the web hosting company and they will move all my web stuff from a VPS to a dedicated server today.  They say there will be no downtime.  I have paid for three months.  This takes the cost of web hosting from $40 a month to $200 a month.  While this board doesn't use 100% of the hosting resources, it is easily more than 50%.  And there isn't anything I can do to make the board more efficient, other than what I have already done.

The only other time I have asked for financial assistance is when I created the Smile Shop board for Jon and John, and that was a brief one time request.    I do not enjoy having to ask for financial help, but now it is necessary.

The other way to help, of course, would be for someone else to host this board.  Obviously, if no new posts were made on this board, the resource usage would be extremely minimal.

It made me laugh, and for that, I appreciate it.

Will definitely donate a little something next month  Cool

Thank you!

Fair enough!

I will donate something as this is a great forum.

Will we get a phone-call from Brian willing to answer a question?  LOL

Hmm... maybe not Brian Wilson... but I might be able to arrange someone named Brian to call you!  Smiley

And thanks!
132  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Donations on: October 31, 2010, 12:43:43 PM
I think the donation message should be extended a bit more, but in short: it was announced to the owner of this board that the monthly costs for maintaing this board will soon be multiplied, hence the plea for a (voluntary) donation.

Essentially, the cost of hosting this board on the internet is going to have to go up, one way or another.

For months, people here noticed they were having a hard time getting on the board.  To fix this, I moved the hosting to InMotion.  InMotion has pointed out, correctly it seems, in order to run this board, as well as comiclist.com, I'm going to have to move things to a dedicated server.  The SS board is using the majority of the hosting resources, but doesn't produce any monetary value to compensate for this.

So, I'm asking for donations.   If you can't or don't want to, don't.  If you can, please do so.  Nothing you send is going to make me wealthy.  It will go to keeping this board online.
133  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: October 30, 2010, 03:24:15 PM
It seems to be mainly if not solely related to Internet Explorer 8.   My suggestion would be to view this board in compatibility mode and see if that fixes it.
134  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: October 30, 2010, 12:11:33 PM
I'm using IE 7 right now, and it's not happening for me.
135  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Where has the Desper-Pedia gone? on: October 30, 2010, 10:32:44 AM
I was having resource and spam issues with it, much like I was having with thesmileshop.net, so it is down for now.  I don't have the time, and quite possibly the money, to keep all this stuff going right now.   I definitely haven't had the time for quite a while to watch for Desper postings, so like many Beach Boy things, it was a work in progress that will never be finished.
136  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: October 30, 2010, 10:26:22 AM
XP SP3 IE 9 at work, Windows 7 IE 10 at home, Vista IE 9 at the girlfriend's house. No Chromers.

IE 9 can't be installed on Windows XP; IE 10 doesn't exist yet.

I've been told by someone else they see it using IE 8.   I think I have IE 8 on my work computer, I will have to take a look Monday.

Now Firefox...

What's going on

What's going on

What's going on

What's going on

What's going on

What's going on

What's going on

Still not happening.   All three times, the box stayed focused on what I was typing.  Windows 7, three different browsers.  So I am at this time unable to duplicate the problem.

Since Steve is the first person to bring this to my attention, I will ask here:  Steve, what browser are you using?

Anyone else who is suffering from this problem: what browser are you using?

For instance, I'm using Chrome, and I don't ever see this happening.

I've missed out on a bunch, haven't I? I mean, I only found out about this board maybe 6 months ago.

Quite honestly, you really didn't miss out on much.  A lot of energy and effort that could have been directed towards documenting and discussing one of the greatest American bands of all time, instead spent tearing people apart.    People's lives, their "real lives" that meant a lot more than message boards, were messed up.

Someone ought to track down some of the people who have disappeared off the internet because the message board madness, just to see how they are doing.

Whole bunch of 'em on Facebook.

That's cool, at least they are still around.   Hope they are doing well.

The message board is now BACK!  Let me know if after this weekend you continue to have connection issues.  And thank you for your patience!

EDIT: I apologize for the messages from the last day that are missing.  Hopefully the loss was minimal in number.

More proof that, someday, the SMILE info on thesmileshop.net needs to be updated.

Thank you for the replies!

I am in negotiations to move all my webhosting to InMotion.  The move most likely will take place in the next few days, possibly as late as this weekend, so if you notice any interruption of service here, please be patient, it is my hope this move will resolve the issues you have seen.

To anyone who has had these issues connecting to smileysmile.net:  Can you connect to the following URLs?

148  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Board Issues: How You Can Help on: July 10, 2010, 04:03:40 PM
How can you help?  Glad you asked.  Two ways:

1) Help me find a new web host.  The new host will have to be able to handle multiple domain names and will have to be able to move my files from my current host to them.  And, it has to be affordable.

2) If you have issues getting on the board, other than very brief outages, please let me know when it started, who you use to get on the internet, etc.  anything that could be useful until I can act on point number 1.

Thanks!
149  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: Board issues? on: June 26, 2010, 11:50:27 AM
Just so everyone knows, the smileysmile.net domain name is now being managed by Network Solutions.  I do not believe there should be any issues caused by that change in the short term, but if you see something odd, please be patient, and let me know what happened.  Hopefully, this change will solve some of the other board access issues people have been seeing.

I don't buy music from iTunes.   Why won't this be available on Amazon or Zune?
