For anybody who hasn't pre-ordered, Import CDs has reduced the box set to $112.99, and they charge just $2.99 to ship within the US. You won't receive it on the day of release, but they're a good option for anybody willing to wait a few days to save a few $$$. They have been in business for a long time and are reliable... I've ordered from them previously, including "Feel Flows".

Darn that Al Jardine.  Every time I think I'm out, he pulls me back in...

That's what George Costanza said (I think)!

it isn't as simple as Al or Mike just dropping by each other's shows in a friendly manner

The perfect opportunity for that would have been at Al's "Postcard" release party at the Roxy in 2010. As I recall, there was some teasing in the show's advertising about "other guest stars" or something like that. There was some wishful and wild speculation about Brian, but the closest we got was Marilyn, and I'm not sure she was even announced when she went on stage during the encore. (It was pretty loud in there.)

And once again, it must be asked, where is John Stamos in all of this?

No, it mustn't.

Are the ones on ImportCDs US copies being sold out of the US? That may be a dumb question, but I'm not sure what's "imported" about them. I'm really sold on that price, though!

Yes, I think they're based in Kentucky.

Acting on a tip from a coupon site, I signed up for importcds' newsletter. Although there was no mention of this on their site, the email from importcds confirming the newsletter contained a 10% discount code good for 14 days. I successfully applied this to my order, bring the final cost for the
5 cd set to just under $90... a full $25 less than Amazon. Shipping will be slower, as they say 5-10 days for the "standard" shipping I chose; you could upgrade to "expedited" for a few dollars more (I think about $5 as I recall) and still beat Bezos out of quite a few bucks.

I saw them on that tour, at the Meadowlands in NJ, Dennis' last tour. I'll always remember when he came out in the encore and sang YASB, his voice was so shot, so raspy, that the next days papers said Joe Cocker had shown up to sing it. But they also performed some long lost classics like Looking at Tomorrow...it was a great show.

Was that the show where both Billy Joel & Dean Torrence appeared, their first since the announcement that they'd be playing the 4th of July on the National mall again? I was so far up in the rafters that it was hard to tell what was going on.
8  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Spirit of Rock N Roll - Hallmark (Songs from Here and Back) version on: February 18, 2021, 10:21:12 PM
Not remarkable, but I remember feeling pretty excited hearing it for the first time, being furious when the network (ABC?) cut into the song for credits and their own promotion, and then waiting impatiently for the release that never came. At least the complete song is easy to find online now, and I love the look on Brian's face throughout, like he's saying "I got this!". I agree with the earlier comment that each following version was less than its predecessor, and find Dylan's appearance no more than a curiosity.

No Til I Die?! I'd be mostly showing up for that one
Same.

After looking at the previous set list, I think the only other deletion in Phoenix was “Passing By”.  I don’ believe there were any additions, just a shorter show.

How strange to play a tour advertised as highlighting "Friends" and "Surf's up" and then the first songs getting cut from the shows are from these albums.
[/quote]

My error. They also didn’t play “Do It Again” in Phoenix. Twenty-six songs, down from the start of the tour’s twenty-nine.
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2019 Tour Thread on: September 07, 2019, 02:23:35 PM
Alan introduced “Lookin’ At Tomorrow” as “ the last song from “Surf’s Up” we”ll be doing... I think”, then looked in Brian’s direction and added “Yes”. So, maybe “‘Til I Die” was a last-minute scratch for some reason & hasn’t been permanently removed.

The Zombies’ set was just under 1 hour. They didn’t fool around & pretty much played one song right after another, with probably no more than four or five stops for brief comments or introductions.

BTW... Brian entered and left the stage using a walker... No wheelchair last night.

Shorter show tonight in Phoenix than the previous shows... about 1:20. I know they didn’t perform ‘Til I Die, sadly, but otherwise I didn’t count songs or keep a set list. Did the “in the cantina” version of H&V. When Brian did sing, I thought his voice was stronger than I have heard it in years & he had some terrific moments. “Meant for You” & “Little Bird” were just two of them. Overall, an excellent show... far exceeded my expectations!

From Facebook...

"Today, I read a message shared by my cousin Brian. My heart is swollen with love, compassion, concern, and thoughtful well wishes for a speedy recovery. Brian, you have fought bravely your battle with mental illness, I have no doubts that you will triumph and move gracefully past this speed bump. Let the music that lives deeply inside you carry you to your highest beautiful self, I will carry you in music every night we perform. I am cheering for you!”

I Love You Cuz and I hope and pray to see you soon.

Peace & Love
Cousin Mike"

(Is the monster that dwarfs Al in the third photo known as anything other than an acoustic bass (if that's what it is)?

Frankly, the ticket buyers for these shows are the long term fans for the most part. The ones who love to hear the nuggets, and the deep catalogue. Can't imagine more than a handful not wanting to hear the deeper catalogue over the old car songs.

Al made the point several times that the Beach Boys had many "eras", and he's telling their story as he remembers it. (It's a "storyteller" show, after all.) The surf and car songs are part a big part of the story. I think that the best that can be hoped for along the lines of hearing a "deeper catalogue" is that he extends the show, as has already been mentioned. There's dialogue before every song so these three aren't going all out, all the time, but they're not exactly spring chickens, either. Still quite a few dates for additions to be made.

Also, in my opinion, they're not just "doing" songs like "Surfin' USA" & "I Get Around" like Al has thousands of times before... they're doing them WELL. I personally enjoyed every one of them.

Did Al do a signing table after the Phoenix show?

Yes, Al & Matt both. They signed until the last person left.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Al Jardine - 2018 Tour Thread - Postcards Storytellers Tour on: January 30, 2018, 01:23:23 PM

Al, Matt: "Santa Ana Winds!" C'mon! It's a no-brainer! It's like the first song I think of when someone says Al Jardine is going to do a two or three-man acoustic show!

I asked Al about adding "Santa Ana Winds" after the show. Before he could say anything, Matt interjected that several others had suggested the same, as well as "San Simeon".

Just got back from Al Jardine's concert at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix on Monday 1/29/2018. We had 3rd row center seats and it was like he was playing in our living room!  Grin Wow so much fun! I posted the setlist on setlist.fm

I'll certainly second that the show was great fun.

A couple of things I might have missed from earlier posts that I'll add in case they haven't been mentioned....

A good portion of the video from "The Monkey's Uncle" was played, with Ross playing the straight man & asking Al what it was like to perform with Annette. Al... "I never even met her".

It's amazing to me how great some of these complex songs sound with just three performers on stage. Loved how they played a couple of verses of "Sloop" as done by the KT and then went right into the familiar BB version. Al was his usual self with lyrical misfortunes; he did the ending to "Sloop" twice, both with the "this is the BEST trip..." line and then explained he knew he messed up but it was because there have been so many different versions of "Sloop", and he counted his children's book's lyrics as one of them. He also slipped on a couple of his own songs, "California" & "Postcard". He talked a little about Glen Campbell in his introduction to "Postcard" and showed some photos of the two of them together I hadn't seen. In general, I thought the photo/video screen was well-done; again a fair number of those shown were new to me. YMMV, of course.

No carrots were distributed tonight. The MIM doesn't allow any food in the museum, and they might extend the policy to their concert hall as well.

Both Al and Matt stayed in the lobby until the last person had left after the show, gladly (in appearance, anyway) signing anything presented for their signatures as well as posing for photos and listening to everybody's personal stories. He sold his "Postcard" cd ($20) as well as a couple of photographs for $10 each and his children's book. He signed anything, however, whether you bought something or not.

The show lasted no more than 90 minutes, not the two hours mentioned for at least one of the earlier dates. Probably less talk because he seems to have done one more song tonight. A few, as mentioned earlier, weren't complete versions... "IGA", "Cal Girls" and "Heroes" come to mind.

Ninety of my best BB minutes ever, however. Truly a terrific evening!

Here's hopin' he has an audience to go see him.

Got my tickets for Phoenix January 29th 3rd row center! Can't wait! Grin

If you're able to, please capture as much of the show as you can on video/audio. Should be quite interesting....

The MIM Music Theater (the Phoenix venue) is clear on their site that photography and videography are not allowed. It's just a 300 seat arena so it would seem that policy would be fairly easy to enforce. Not worth the worry of ejection for me. I'll have a pocket camera but imagine it'll stay pocketed until the very end, if it gets used at all.

( don't they charge $15 for a ball cap?_)

Double that (and maybe more for a BB cap). I just paid $30 for a BW cap last month. (Liked the color.)

Seems to me that some here are trying to impose their "morals" and "ethics" (both terms have been freely used in this thread) on Brian and Al.

Unless I've missed something, there's been no statement issued other than that Brian and Al are not involved in this possible appearance.

I took that to mean "We try not to even be in the same state as Mike Love, to say nothing about ever again appearing on stage with him".

It really could be that simple. Feel good if you want because you think Brian and Al share your beliefs, but there's no evidence yet that that's the case here.

And the ending is incredibly touching and redemptive.

I'll second that. A real tear-jerker for me.

If anybody's looking for the password for the Phoenix (Celebrity Theatre) presale, it's VIBRATIONS.  (Apparently not case-sensitive.)  It might work for other shows (if any) promoted by Danny Zelisko.

Can you imagine that, on a discussion board like this someone is  accused of having an odd fascination with a member of the Beach Boys.

An absolutely perfect response to that comment, professor.
