26  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love and Mercy At The Toronto Film Festival on: August 27, 2014, 10:21:31 PM
A new film about Wilson's battle with what is euphemistically called his "demons" is set to premiere Sept. 7 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Titled "Love and Mercy," it stars Paul Dano and John Cusack as the young and old Wilson, respectively, and Paul Giamatti as Dr. Eugene Landy, the late psychotherapist who took control of Wilson's life as a financial conservator, musical collaborator and 24/7 counselor. It follows Wilson in the mid-1960s as he suffers psychotic episodes and struggles with drug abuse and obesity.

Wilson has actively been involved in fine-tuning the film, which has been in development since 1988. He went to a recent table reading, his publicist, Jean Sievers said, and provided the production team with some notes. It already has an international distribution deal from Lionsgate.

Not related to L&M, but he also speaks on Foskett leaving his band, depression, and some other things

Some interesting quotes from the article:

Wilson says flat out, "The Beach Boys band is not as good as my band.

"The Brian Wilson Band is younger and has better musicians," he said. "They play better, they sing better. They are really just excellent musicians."

and

Asked when the other material he recorded with Beck will be released, he said, "Not soon."

Well, just finished reading the script. Hesitant to say much else, except that it reads like a very condensed version of many of the musical/biographical hit points we have all come to know so well (that biopic thing), including many that were previously covered in the TV films (but here seem much less cringeworthy, depending, of course, on the direction and deliveries, and this is a pretty good cast of actors). I'm especially excited for Dano to wipe clean our bad memories of the TV Looney Bri's. As stated above, it essentially focuses on intercutting between the Bri/Mel intro (and then enter Landy) and the 64-67 recording sessions (where almost all of the BB's dialogue takes place) ranging from I Get Around (with Murray being Murray) to Pet Sounds to GV to Smile (including the inevitable Mike/Van Dyke confrontation, this time over "snuff" rather than "crows"). The transitions between the two eras is where we get inside Brian's psychoacoustic interiority, with mashups of voices and music in his head, so that could be very either artful or very problematic (or both), but I like the way it reads in description and I think Dano can pull this off without too many histrionics. The structure is simple and focused and the back and forth 'tween 60's and 80's seems a much better choice than a straightforward biographical timeline from Hawthorne to End titles approach. Very few extraneous scenes or padded dialogue - there's a bit of Mike, some of Carl, less of Dennis (and Al and Bruce each have only a line or two). This is really about Brian, not "America's Band."

Audree gets a brief scene.
Spector gets a brief scene.
Marilyn gets a brief scene or two (listening to PS)
Hal and Brian have a nice, supportive moment together, as do all three Wilson brothers.
Inside Pop (LB's voice over) makes an appearance and there are some notes in the script that call for montages of other archival footage (Beatles, etc).
Definitely musically informed, if not overly fetishized (name check Western, Gold Star, Carol, Hal, Chuck, Banana and Louie, Wonderful, etc.)
If all the music cues cited in the script are actually in the soundtrack, it could make for an interesting album (Sunrays, Ronettes, Beatles)
And best of all, nary a beard is mentioned....

Looking forward to this. Should be fun and it will help set some of the previous biopic records straight (at least from the Bri/Mel perspective). My main concern remains the curious casting of Cusack, but he is an excellent actor, so I'll try to remain
 open-minded.

cheers PS for that.

But where did you get a copy of the script?
Any chance....... Wink

am looking forward to this even more now. Also cant wait to hear Atticus Ross's score of the film aswell

surely a trailer will be made available in the coming days

"Dispensing with staid biopic conventions, director Bill Pohlad nimbly intercuts between two key periods in Wilson's life, shining a double spotlight on his rise to stardom with the Beach Boys in the sixties and his remarkable eighties solo resurgence. As the younger Wilson, Paul Dano gives a superb performance that conveys the artist's prodigious gifts as well as his increasingly precarious mental state; the scenes of creative exploration during the Pet Sounds sessions are exhilarating. John Cusack is equally compelling, burrowing into himself as Dano's middle-aged counterpart. The actors are joined by the ever-excellent Paul Giamatti, very much in his element as Wilson's Svengali-like therapist, and by Elizabeth Banks as Melinda Ledbetter, the Cadillac saleswoman who would become Wilson's second wife and spiritual saviour, as well as a chief catalyst in his late-career revitalization."

i like the sound of this. all we need now is the trailer

New interview with Paul Dano where he speaks a little about the movie:

There isn't, it seems, much room for levity when you take what you do this seriously. I'm glad for his sake, then, that his next film is a little sunnier. He'll play the Beach Boy Brian Wilson in the forthcoming biopic Love & Mercy, a character Dano calls "a little more goofy and childlike" and a shoot he summarises as "probably some of the most fun I've ever had". He went straight from filming Prisoners to this, and considers such a change of character "one weird payoff" in that "by dipping into the darkness it made it easier to go towards the light afterwards". Any biopic of Wilson will not be without its darker moments, however, and such characters do seem to have more of a claim over Dano than the light ones.

They perfectly capture the sound and essence of The Beach Boys on 'Freedom Wind'

These guys shouldve been brought in to produce TWGMTR.

Im sure what they would have come up with wouldve been 10x better than the sub-par album we ended up getting
33  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pictures from \ on: October 30, 2013, 04:30:54 PM
Although it hasn’t been screened yet, I’m also very excited about Love & Mercy.  What was it like making that project?

DANO: Yeah, we did that this summer, and it’s some of the most fun I’ve ever had.  He’s a really special man, Brian Wilson, and, not just the ‘60s and the music, but his spirit is really special and strong.  And, I just fell in love with him and what he did.  If you listen to Pet Sounds, there’s really nothing like it before or since, and it was just a joy filling up on that, and learning to play the piano.  I got to work with these amazing musicians and, it was just a joy.  I don’t know if I should say that since it’s a ways off but, I think he’s got a really great story.  He’s a special guy.  I hope that we do him justice.

One of the reasons I’m so excited about the project, besides your involvement in it, is the screenplay by Oren [Moverman].  I loved Rampart and The Messenger.  He’s just a great screenwriter, and I’m curious what he brought to the table in terms of this script.

DANO: Well Oren is my friend now, and he’s a great guy.  He’s a wonderful writer like you said.  I don’t wanna give away what he wrote, but I will say that, I think that he tried to capture Brian’s spirit as well as tell a story.  I don’t think it’s a totally traditional biopic.  I think it’s gonna be a fun and accessible film, and I think it’s hopefully going to be interesting, like the man that it’s depicting.  I think he did an amazing job cracking this story, and I can’t imagine anyone else having done it, aside from him.  I know they tried to make movies about Brian for a long time, and I think music stories are tough to tell in an interesting way.  The fact that Bill [Polad] got Oren to write it is really also a smart choice on his behalf.

I know you don’t wanna talk more about it, but I have one more question on this particular film.  I’m curious if you’ve heard that Atticus Ross was designing the film’s soundscape.  I’m curious to know if you’ve heard any of the score of what he’s done?

DANO: I haven’t yet.  I got to hang out with Atticus a little bit.  He seemed super excited, and I think they’re approaching that stuff in a really cool way.  I’m hoping to hear some of it soon actually, but we just finished at the end of August and I’m still detoxing, and trying to steer clear for a little bit. Then, I’ll be excited to see what they’re cooking up.

If 'Freedom Wind' was released by the Beach Boys in the mid-60s, it would go down as one of their greatest albums ever
35  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What kind of material should the band have released instead of \ on: August 15, 2013, 09:35:54 PM
Just no nostalgia, make progressive music. If Brian only had a few good ones, forget the hype and make a great group album.

exactly

they had the potential to make a great rock album

In the grand scheme of things, after we are all long dead, this will be generously forgotten along with the rest of their post LA career. *1/2

I know that sounds harsh, because Isn't it Time is nice, and that one Jon Bon Jovi wrote sounds pretty good too, but the production is a dealbreaker for me. Maybe cos I'm a producer I'm more sensitive to that stuff, but it's totally unlistenable imo.

100% agree

heard it a few times again recently, and doubt i will ever go back to it again.
just doesnt really do much for me

weak songs (apart form 1-2) with boring production.

major disappointment when it first came out, and still feel the same way one year on

the first song of 13, 'God Is Dead' was released

sounds exactly like you would expect - early Sabbath............which is a good thing IMO

Ozzy's voice sounds decent aswell. Not as nasally as he has recently on some tracks

Obsessing is a strong word, but my favorite songs recently are "Losing You" by Solange, "Treasure" and "If I Knew" by Bruno Mars, and pretty much the entirety of the Raspberries' Capitol Collector's Series collection.

great song. in fact her whole album is pretty impressive.

very excited

though to be honest, i love their 'late 70s West Coast pop-rock' music sound rather than their dance stuff

"Daft Punk later explained that they sought a "west coast vibe" for Random Access Memories, referencing such bands as Fleetwood Mac, the The Doobie Brothers and the Eagles"

another ML interview where he shares some interesting info:

Though he had some reservations, Love says he did enjoy working with Wilson during the tour last year.

"If it was just Brian, it would be great," he says, "but it's not just Brian. That's all I care to say about that."
And, again with some reservations, he says he was happy with the music and the presentation of the Beach Boys' catalog of songs.

"I think there were too many guitarists and too many voices competing for parts for my taste, but it was a good experience musically," he says. "Brian has a good band and there were some good musicians there. We had a good time."

Asked about the possibility of working with Wilson in the future, Love says, "I'm not negative on it but there are no plans at this moment in time to do anything more. But Ian Fleming taught us to 'never say never.

46  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mike Love talks about C50 shows (March 26) on: March 26, 2013, 07:20:05 PM
http://www.montgomerynews.com/articles/2013/03/26/entertainment/doc5151c0ad005ae357009610.txt

Ask Mike Love if he’s still having fun singing about surf, sand, cars and girls for more than 50 years now and he’s quick with an answer.

“No . . . I’m having fun, fun, fun. And good vibrations,” said Love.

Beach Boys humor. Add in your own rimshot here.

“How can you not have fun when you have an audience full of people who still enjoy hearing the stuff you had a hand in writing and creating and singing? It’s a blessing, that’s what it is.”
Love, along with longtime Beach Boys bandmate Bruce Johnston, will be touring throughout April under the Beach Boys banner and will make several stops in the greater Philadelphia area: Friday, April 5, 8 p.m. at the TD Bank Arts Centre in Sewell, N.J.; Saturday, April 6, 8 p.m. at the Community Theatre in Morristown, N.J.; Sunday, April 7, 7 p.m. at the American Music Theatre in Lancaster, Pa.; and Friday, May 31, 8 p.m. at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, N.J.

And yes, it’s not particularly easy for a 72-year-old rock star and co-founder of the iconic group to continue to be on tour, night after night, year after year. But Love is a longtime believer in transcendental meditation — since 1967, in fact — and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“You have to be careful about getting tired — that’s why I meditate,” said Love in a recent interview from his home in Lake Tahoe, Nev. “It’s invaluable to me. I don’t think I could handle the level of activity — the touring — without the benefit of transcendental meditation.

“We learned the hard way in the ’60s,” he said. “You can’t go out and burn the candle at both ends and you can’t drink and smoke pot and hope to be able to function like we do. You live a sensible lifestyle, get your rest when you can, meditate a couple of times a day and it all adds up to longevity and being able to support a fair amount of activity.”

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Beach Boys story without some discussion of the highly successful 50th anniversary tour that the surviving original members — Brian Wilson, Love, Al Jardine, Johnston and David Marks — completed in 2012.

And it wouldn’t be a Beach Boys story without the well-documented fact that it ended with something less than total good vibrations among the band members
Love, Johnston and their band, which has toured under the Beach Boys name for years without Wilson, Jardine and Marks, had scheduled dates after the 50th anniversary tour ended in late 2012. Consequently, those dates did not include Wilson, Jardine and Marks.

The two camps engaged in some back-and-forth, Wilson and Jardine claiming publicly that they didn’t know why the momentum created by the 50th anniversary couldn’t continue and Love insisting that the tour had a finite number of dates and once those were completed, that was the end of the obligation.

Love even went so far as to write a letter to fans that was published in the Los Angeles Times in October 2012 clarifying his position that he didn’t “fire” Wilson, Jardine and Marks from the band and his rationale about moving on with his touring version of the Beach Boys.

Five months later, Love hasn’t changed his tune. And he’s not afraid to restate his position, although he does leave the door open ever-so-slightly that another reunion tour could happen.

“I maintain the attitude that there was an agreed-upon amount of shows that we were to do on the anniversary celebration,” he said. “Those shows were accomplished and I think a lot of fans got a lot of pleasure out of it and we had a good time doing it.

“But I’m not opposed to any future involvement. It’s just that those agreed-upon dates came and went and now we’re off to do what we do with our group. Al has his group and Brian has his group.”

What Love doesn’t understand is the continued backlash and animosity toward him.

“If you’ve looked at Al’s website recently, there’s so much ‘Hate Mike Love’ stuff going on. You would wonder why he’d entertain that stuff on his website,” said Love. “I’d never post anything or allow anybody to say anything bad about anybody on mine. I wish people would understand.

“You know, they used to say that the Beatles wouldn’t be the Beatles without John Lennon. Well, maybe so, but Paul McCartney is not chopped liver. Paul McCartney is brilliant and clever and talented and prolific. So why do you have to disparage one person because you happen to have a favorite personality in a group? I just don’t understand that.

“Some people think you have to knock somebody down in order to build yourself up,” said Love. “I don’t look at it that way. To the mentality that likes to disparage other people, I say perhaps you should get a life. It’s just wrong thinking in my opinion and I don’t mind saying that.”

Still, the music and harmonies survive into a fifth decade. And like the original Beach Boys, there’s still a familiar feel to the band now. Love’s son, Christian, plays guitar and provides vocals, mostly on the parts that the late Carl Wilson used to sing.

“Christian does Carl’s parts,” said Love. “Carl had this beautiful quality, and Christian has quite a similar quality and range. Carl could go a little higher, but Christian sounds fantastic on the lead on ‘Good Vibrations.’”

Other current band members include Randall Kirsch on bass and vocals; Tim Bonhomme on keyboards and vocals; John Cowsill on percussion and vocals; and Scott Totten on guitar and vocals.

Love said he likes playing all types of venues and he’ll continue to do so as long as he’s able and the fans want to hear the Beach Boys.

“It’s a darn good thing that we’re still able to sing the same songs in the same keys and that the people actually still come to see us,” said Love. “I like it all, I really do. I like playing anything from a club to a stadium and everything in between.”

Alice Cooper gave an interview to Rolling Stone where he spoke a bit about his drinking days. He mentions BW aswell:

But, as you say, some of them couldn't be stopped.
I think the early guys, the Jim Morrisons, the Janis Joplins, just did not want to see 30. Twenty-seven was the expiration date. And it really came up a lot of times, 27, and I guess they said, "That's too close to 30, I'm just gonna burn out." First of all, rock & roll and heroin, it's not gonna work. Anything with a needle involved is not gonna work, and you add that to a little schizophrenia and a little bipolar, you got Syd Barrett and you got Brian Wilson. Two geniuses. Brian's producing and I've always loved him, I consider him a genius, but what could he have been doing now? He would've been doing amazing stuff. But on top of being schizophrenic and bipolar he's doing acid and speed. That's just like pouring coals on the fire.

ive always been a fan of R Kelly

He writes, produces, mixes and performs most of his own material aswell so theres bonus points

I love the 'raindrop' effect he has in a lot of his songs (see 'In The Kitchen').
sure some of his songs are very sexual/freaky, but his love songs are second to none in the RnB genre
