Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Carl Wilson's backing vocals on Tom Petty's Wildflowers

Great thread. I'm not the hugest Petty fan overall, but that stretch with Wildflowers/She's the One/Echo just hits me in the right way. Very melancholy vibes to each, and a very upfront sound; great headphone albums for me.
I do hear Carl in the "ooh" stack on Honey Bee, but it does not jump out at all, I have to listen with the knowledge that he's on it. Just listening to Hung Up and Overdue again, and here he similarly isn't incredibly prominent. Is he anywhere else on the song besides the outro? I'm on laptop speakers so my judgement may not be optimal...
And the thought of Carl in the Wilbury's is delightful. I actually don't like their output that much, I'm not a huge fan of the Jeff Lynne sound on certain things (actually I really dislike the sound and production of Full Moon Fever to be honest, despite some great songs).

d@rn- very mellow and more than a bit trippy, which is right in my sweet spot. On Moon Queen I'm really digging the outro, it could go on a lot longer. Cool arrangement on Singularity 2045, I like the harmonies on the "chorus" (if you will), and especially how the break in the middle goes in a different section. Oh and now the outro again is going back to that, and could go on another minute + for me!

captain and d@rnomite- thank for for the comments! captain, I usually have that feeling, but sometimes it's easy to question yourself when you're working somewhat in isolation, you know? And d@rn, thank you, I like to put up the instrumentals to some songs since they can work as their own separate piece- as we well know being Beach Boys fanatics.

Aye, thanks Woody. You nailed it. I actually wrote it mostly on bass and it sounded more like a country song almost. Then I recorded the bass first off, added some fuzz and it was a totally Weezer feel, so I just went with that. The drums especially have the Weezer feel I think.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / orange22's songs: Nervous Shakedown (2/21/16); The Boy / The Wolf

2/21/16 update: As promised, and without much ado, here is the full version of the instrumental I posted last week. There's a Beach Boys sample in the song- see if you can identify it. First correct answer wins a cookie https://soundcloud.com/orange22222/nervous-shakedown------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2/17/16 update: This newest track is a bit of a banger, if you will. Yes, more electronic-based aural pleasure (or pain, depending on your definition). Since I feel my last song got lost in too many effects and tinkering, on this one I tried to focus on simplicity and sound quality. I tried a few new things- sounds nice on a good system or in a car if you’re willing and able to try. This is the instrumental, I think I’ll have the full vocal version up next week. As always, any comments are fully appreciated. https://soundcloud.com/orange22222/nervous-shakedown-instrumental------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2/8/16 update: My first released track of the new year is an experiment in something, but I don't quite know what. To be musically snobish, I'll call it a trip-pop/EPM (electronic prance music) mash-up. If you have a better description let me know! Instrumental version up as well for all you daytrippers out there. The Boy / The Wolf: https://soundcloud.com/orange22222/the-boy-the-wolfThe Boy/ The Wolf (Instrumental): https://soundcloud.com/orange22222/the-boy-the-wolf-instrumental------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12/14/15 update: I’m back with some chip tunes arrangements of 2 Christmas classics. If you’re wondering what the heck a “chip tune” is, it’s a song that sounds like the video games of the 80s and early 90s (i.e. think “Nintendo”). A lot of producers these days use elements of chip tunes combined with more modern sounds, and it’s quite an interesting combo. However, these 2 are straight up recreations of the Nintendo sound, and were actually intended for an update to a Christmas themed video game, before the project got shelved. Merry Christmas! https://soundcloud.com/orange22222/angels-we-have-heard-are-high-angels-we-have-heard-on-highhttps://soundcloud.com/orange22222/o-holy-fright-o-holy-nightAlso, with slightly less ado, is this organ-based instrumental that I put up last week, but figured not worthy enough to post here So, you know, if you’re quite bored here it is! https://soundcloud.com/orange22222/organ-donor------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12/1/15 update: The music continues! Another in my series of existential love songs, this one literally so. I did a little vocal break in the middle of the song that is probably my favorite part. This is a chilled song, definitely a good one for headphones https://soundcloud.com/orange22222/exist------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11/24/15 update: It's been awhile, but I've got a new one. This one is neo-folk (a real term I assume?!), acoustic guitar based with some other fixins, but still a pretty sparse "demo" though. Warning that the lyrics start out NSFW, but it's a reference which forms part of a mini lyrical theme. There's also a bonus stripped down acoustic mix for your optional auditory perusal. If you take the time to listen it's genuinely appreciated, and of course any thoughts or criticisms are more than welcome: https://soundcloud.com/orange22222/dont-you-think-that-i-would-like-to-demohttps://soundcloud.com/orange22222/dont-you-think-that-i-would-like-to-acoustic-mix-demo------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10/12/15 update: New song time. This one is called "Isabelle". It's a bit of a strange vibe on this one, goes through a few different emotions and feels. Mostly electronic based, but with some electric guitars as well. I'm quite a bit self conscious about my singing on this one, so I'll post the vocal version as well as the instrumental for you to pick and choose from! Thank you so much to anyone who listens. All comments and critiques welcome. https://soundcloud.com/orange22222/isabellehttps://soundcloud.com/orange22222/isabelle-instrumental------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Original Post: There are a lot of talented musicians sharing their music here, which I've quite enjoyed listening to, so I figured I'd throw my hat into the ring. Here's something I finished recently, it has quite a few vocal harmonies, nothing complex, and I'm not the greatest singer I'm getting into lyric writing more than I ever have before, and I think this one ended up pretty good. Any thoughts or opinions or rants or raves are more than welcome. https://soundcloud.com/orange22222/im-in-a-band-rough-mix

Mr. Parks may not be stating his claims in his usually eloquent way, but that is not what I want to address.
With respect to his contention regarding Love & Mercy, does he not have a point? To address the cello part on Good Vibrations, my understanding is that Carl suggested the use of a cello, and by his word Mr. Parks came up with the idea that they play 8th note triplets. The cello triplets are certainly not the sole focal point of Good Vibrations, but they are a very interesting part of the outro- so much so that they form an entire scene in the Love & Mercy movie, but with Brian seeming to come up with the part. If we are to take Mr. Parks at his word regarding this topic, and so far no one has shown otherwise, then I would say he has a legitimate issue. If so, who would his issue be with? Certainly the writers and producers would be relying on the words and thoughts of others, and in this case you would have to believe that Brian ok'd the scene as being correct...
I don't think the scene suggested the cello was Brian's idea. It just showed his obsessive streak with getting a segment perfectly despite the lengths it took to do so. Any scene depicting Van Dyke or Carl coming up with the idea would have seemed extraneous, forced and unneeded. This was not "Orange Crate Art - The Van Dyke Parks Biopic." The movie already was long enough. Even if a scene depicting Van Dyke being credited ever existed, it likely would have been edited out. Of course it would have been silly to require the powers that be (Brian, et al) to give VDP credit for the cello triplets in Love & Mercy. It's equally silly to suggest that, if the scene is factually incorrect, that the inaccuracies should be brushed over. Reference this VDP interview posted earlier in the thread, where he specifically describes the recording session of the Good Vibrations cello: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRVy6HjxnYE&feature=youtu.be&t=20m58s

I really like both albums, but it's obvious that they are very different from the sound and style that made most of us fans in the first place (everything through '66 basically). But despite that, the harmonies (even the songs without Brian) are still incredible and that's what makes them true Beach Boys albums for me. "Leaving This Town" is one of my favorites from these albums (and terribly underrated I feel, but obviously irrelevant here), but if it was done by another band it might come off as more generic; however, when you take that gritty, soulful, "70s" sound and put the Beach Boys harmonies over the top...beautiful.

I wanted to bring up a point that MarcellaHasDirtyFeet brought up in another thread, but which seems applicable here: Did any of the studio backing tracks during the Wrecking Crew portions sound like re-recordings to anyone else? Or have the originals been "cleaned up" somehow? A lot of the instrumental bits sounded just ever so slightly different than the original BB tracks.
There were definitely a few scenes where new recordings were used, but I didn't have the capacity to recognize whether the studio band was playing them "live" or miming to newly recorded tracks. Either way, it's interesting why they chose to do this for certain scenes when the instrumentals and session outtakes were obviously used elsewhere.

Best Surfing Song: Surfin' USA Best Car Song: Our Car Club Best Love Song: God Only Knows Best 70's Song: Leaving This Town Best/Most Beautiful Beach Boys Harmonies Song: Their Hearts were Full of Spring
It's weird how people think of different songs. I put "Surfer Girl" as favorite surfing song, but then I thought that it really wasn't a surf song. Same for "I Get Around" and "Don't Worry Baby" as "car" songs. edit: Oh, and of course Surf's Up as a 70s song!
